We're Launching a New Business!In this mini-season, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at a small business launch plan.

Over the years we've been asked many times by this audience for ideas concepts or strategies we might use if we were launching a business in Asheville. In this season we don't need to be hypothetical. We'll show you exactly how we think about launching a business in town.

Next week, you'll meet the founders and owners and hear the "Why" of the business. The following week, we'll look at the "How's" both with respect to the company and the launch plan. And, finally, we'll share "What" tactically we've done during the launch.

Our hope is that this mini-season inspires you to take another look at your own business, helps you to take the leap into the business you've been dreaming about, or, at the very least, provides a unique perspective —under the hood— as we build a new business in town.

Rockgeist and Greg Hardy In this episode, I recount the conversation I had with Greg Hardy at his 3000 square-foot studio in North Asheville. While normally we interview guests on this podcast, unfortunately, the audio of our conversation was corrupted. This episode is a report of sorts on the highlights from our interview.

In this episode, you'll hear more about what bikepacking is (and how you can get started with the help of Rockgeist), you will hear how Greg started by selling his own, used bikepack bags on eBay, and how that has built his team to 9 people today. And finally, you'll hear an uncommon but intuitive approach to buying a business in your industry.

While it's not the same as the conversation, I hope you enjoy this episode about Rockgeist!

In this episode, we interview Luke McLaughlin, the founder and head instructor of Holistic Survival School.

Luke has spent months (and maybe years?!) using only primitive tools and supplies surviving out in nature. And he's most know for competing three times in the Discovery Channel show, Naked and Afraid. Prior to moving to Asheville and starting Holistic Survival School, he worked as a Wilderness Therapy instructor for teens in Utah, living most of the year outdoors in tarp shelters.

One glance at a photo of Luke, long-haired and bare-chested, and you might have the impression that he’s some kind of lone caveman, a modern-day Tarzan. But, as you’ll see in this episode, that’s not the full picture.

Luke is committed to helping other people not only learn “earth-based skills” like building a fire from sticks, but also remembering and relearning what it means to be human again.

Here’s What You’ll Learn in this Episode:

  • How Luke became interested in learning and teaching primitive skills
  • The story of Luke’s journey from teaching ninth-grade biology to appearing on Discovery Channel’s Naked and Afraid
  • Luke’s mission for holistic survival school and how it goes beyond simply learning primitive skills
  • Why Luke feels that knowing how to build a fire is less important than personal growth and trauma release
  • Tools and resources for those seeking to learn more about primitive skills!

We hope you enjoy this episode with Luke!

In this episode, we interview Jeff Kaplan, the Director of Venture Asheville and founder of Just Kibbitz. In our own opinion, Jeff is as close to the gravitational center of Asheville’s startup ecosystem as you can get.

Here's some background on our guest, Jeff Kaplan. For as long as he can remember, Jeff has been fascinated by entrepreneurship. Prior to becoming the Director of Entrepreneurship at Venture Asheville, he graduated from the University of Florida with a Master’s degree in Entrepreneurship. He’s taught entrepreneurship, written a book about entrepreneurship, and has even is an entrepreneur himself—selling one of his startups about 2 years ago!

Considering we’ve had a podcast about Asheville-based entrepreneurs for over a year, we’re about a year late in having Jeff on the show. We hope you'll agree that the wait has been worth it.

Here’s What You’ll Learn in this Episode:

  • Jeff’s background story and many entrepreneurial endeavors
  • How Venture Asheville fits in Asheville’s Chamber of Commerce (literally, America’s top Chamber of Commerce)
  • What Venture Asheville is, how it helps new businesses scale, and its three main programs, including mentorship, funding, and events
  • The core competencies of successful entrepreneurs based on real case studies that Jeff and his team have conducted
  • Resources for Asheville-based entrepreneurs and which ones are best for different stages of the business
  • What the goal of The Asheville Impact Micro-grant is and how to apply
  • Jeff also shares his pitches for three businesses he’s worked on in the past (and one he is currently working on now)

We hope you enjoy this episode with Jeff!

In this episode, we interview the two founders of Moonlight Makers, Claire Watson and Nicole Hairfield.

You probably know Moonlight Makers for their shop on Rankin Ave that sells t-shirts and gifts featuring silly puns and phrases. But what you might now know is that Moonlight Makers wasn’t always a t-shirt company. In fact, when they first started out their intention was to sell the artwork of local artists, not their own line of products.

During this episode, Nicole and Claire tell us all about how and why they started this business and the steps they took to get it where it is today.

Here’s What You’ll Learn in this Episode:

  • The story of how Moonlight Makers began (hint: the business looks VERY different from when it first started)
  • How Nicole and Claire knew it was time to start hiring employees
  • What Nicole and Claire do when they disagree about something
  • Why they decided NOT to outsource their production overseas
  • And many other hilarious (and serendipitous) stories from their journey

We hope you enjoy this episode with Claire and Nicole!

When it comes to all three of these topics, Marilyn is a fountain of knowledge. She’s lived here in Asheville for more than 30 years and throughout the decades, she’s carefully observed how Asheville has evolved and used this knowledge to distill important lessons on community development.

In this episode, we share three strange teachings that are helping us stay positive and take action during COVID-19.

We realize that there are a lot of people out there experiencing some kind of suffering, loss, or pain during this pandemic. It may be financial, physical, or even mental.

As a way of supporting and loving this community, we want to take a moment to share with you three important philosophies that have really helped shape our thoughts and responses to what’s happening around us. Although we know we are speaking from a place of multiple types of privilege, these teachings have helped our minds stay positive and be optimistic. These counter-intuitive mental frameworks have helped us cope and continue to work toward our goals.

And although some of these teachings are, let’s say, strange, our hope is that you’ll find at least one of them helpful. No matter what you’re going through right now, whether it’s a financial loss, the feeling of failure, or a sense of loneliness, we hope this episode will help you in some small way.

Here’s What You’ll Learn in the Episode:

  • Why we’re going on the offensive during COVID-19 (and some of the ways we’re doing so)
  • How these frameworks have affected the way we’re showing up with friends, family, and this community.
  • The three philosophies or teachings that have impacted the way we see the world (and are especially important as we consider the effects of COVID-19 on our business and our personal lives)
  • For each teaching, we also share resources and books where you can learn more about them
  • Why some of these teachings might be “triggering” or difficult to hear for some people

In this episode, we interview Clint Spiegel, founder of Industry Nine.

When we met clint for the podcast interview, we began by taking a tour of his 70,000 square feet factory. There are big machines and lots of metal parts everywhere you look. In between each machine, there are a handful of employees wearing protective face gear, working away to keep the parts moving through the system. The floor is covered in what can only be described as “metal sawdust.” Oh, and it’s loud. Very loud.

Clint yells over his shoulder, “I’ve been walking on metal shards all my life.”

He’s not joking.

Since the day he was born, Clint has been surrounding by manufacturing. Fifty years ago, his dad had established a machine shop in Asheville that manufactured parts for a variety of industries throughout the world. At age five, Clint began to join his dad at work, learning the ins and outs of the industry. After graduating from college with a degree in Computer Science, Clint found his way back to his family’s business, eventually taking it over and making it his own. Although the business has evolved since then, he and his dad continue to work together on certain aspects.

Clint identifies as a “constant innovator” with an “overactive mind.” Over the years, he’s started numerous businesses, from manufacturing knives to building engineering software and industrial robotics. Some of these businesses failed and faded away, but some of them—like Industry Nine (appropriately name “nine” because it was his ninth business)—have been wildly successful.

During our interview with Clint, a veritable MBA course, we try to unpack what he believes has contributed to Industry Nine’s success and how he’s thinking about the future.

Here’s What You’ll Learn in this Episode:

  • How the idea for Industry Nine came about
  • Clint’s insight on innovation, invention, and entrepreneurship
  • What makes Industry Nine’s cycling parts different from others in the industry
  • What client identifies as “the perfect mix” for entrepreneurship
  • Key milestones and turning points in Clint’s business
  • The importance of focus and keeping your edge when running a business
  • Tips for managing employees (Clint has about 90 currently)

In this episode, we interview Kyle Brown, the founder of Clawhammer Supply. Clawhammer manufactures and sells home brewing and home distilling equipment online, directly to consumers.

The idea for Clawhammer was born out of Kyle’s own curiosity and love of “tinkering.” He has always loved building things from scratch and learning the inner workings of how seemingly complex processes occur.

“The thing about this story is that I’m just a guy who was just making stills in the basement and one day a lot of people wanted to buy them. I don’t have any formal business training,” says Kyle.

But, as you’ll hear more about in the episode, the key difference-maker that helped Kyle grow his business into one of the largest home-brewing and distilling equipment companies in the world was the guts to take action.

Here’s What You’ll Learn in This Episode:

  • The story of how Clawhammer Supply got its start (and how you can use the same process too)
  • How Kyle used "dry testing" to assess the viability of his business
  • The strategy and tactics Kyle employes to scale his business
  • How Kyle leveraged organic content and email marketing to grow his business sustainably
  • Tips for coming up with new content ideas
  • Fun facts about beer, homebrewing, and distilling

In this episode, we interview Gareth Higgins, a storyteller, writer, and founder of the Movies & Meaning festival (among many other projects).

Unlike most of our other podcast interviews, this episode focuses more closely on universal themes such as human connection, loneliness, and community. It extends beyond what it means to be a better entrepreneur to what it means to be a better human being.

But, as you’ll hear, the two overlap nicely.

We stumbled upon Gareth through the Movie & Meaning festival website. Little did we know that this Irish-born man would have so much to say about life and how to live it in the best way possible. Gareth is deeply empathetic, spiritual, and joyful —qualities that we think you’ll enjoy experiencing while listening to this episode.

Here’s What You’ll Learn:

  • What inspired Gareth to become a “storyteller” and why he fell in love with cinema
  • How the meaning of stories can change based on how someone tells the story
  • How you might examine your own life and tell better stories about yourself
  • Gareth’s take on the antidote for loneliness
  • How to build a better community, both in the world and right here in Asheville
  • And a simple, but meaningful, challenge help you get to know your neighbors

A former postal service worker, Kaye Bentley, founded Asheville Rooftop Bar Tours in July of 2018. The idea came to her just a year before she retired from the postal service. “I knew that eventually, I would retire from the postal service, but I just thought I would volunteer for some organizations and possibly travel,” she says.

Of course, as we now know, things didn’t exactly go the way she thought they would.

One day while a work, Kaye asked a colleague if she wanted to go out to some rooftop bars around town. As she was planning the bar route, she thought to herself, “If there was a tour for that, I would totally take it.” But there wasn’t anything like it out there.

On a whim, she called GoDaddy that day and bought the domain for Asheville Rooftop Bar Tours thinking that eventually “somebody will want to use this.”

She didn’t think that that “somebody” would be her. As time went on, Kaye continued thinking about the idea. “I kept taking notes and audio voice memos on my phone saying someone could do it like this and do it like that. And then I realized after about two or three months that that ‘someone’ was me. The idea just wouldn’t leave me alone.”

For the rest of the story, you’ll have to tune in to the podcast!

Here’s What You’ll Learn in this Episode

  • How Kaye started and developed Asheville Rooftop Bar Tours
  • The steps she took to get her idea off the ground, from developing the branding and website to building relationships with rooftop bars around town and getting her first customers
  • Kaye’s marketing strategies
  • Challenges of growing the business — especially for Kaye who didn’t come from a business background
  • Why moving to a co-working space has changed Kaye’s work-life balance
  • A glimpse of Kaye’s postal service career
  • What’s coming up for Asheville Rooftop Bar Tours

Myles Alexander is truly one of a kind. In episode 26, with Holiday Grooms, we mentioned that a gentleman is someone who puts their guests at ease. Myles is a gentleman. While he says that his architecture business is decidedly left of center and "not your mamma's architecture firm" — he shows an endearing appreciation for history and irreverence for tradition for tradition's sake. We think you'll dig this episode.

Here’s What You’ll Learn:

  • Myles’ journey to becoming an architect and starting his own firm in Asheville
  • A behind-the-scenes glimpse of Smoky Park Supper Club’s architectural design completed by Myles (aka the only reason to use shipping containers in a build)
  • Insight on what it’s like to work with an architect (it's like a marriage)
  • Inputs vs. outputs (and which to focus on)
  • Doing what you love versus what other people love (and why you should do what you love)
  • Tips for smoking meat (from Myles, a champion competition smoker)
  • Myles’ favorite places to eat in and around Asheville

In this episode, the two of us sit down and talk about the meaning behind “gratitude,” money, and three different ways to price your product or service.

“Appreciation means two things: It means to grow and it means thankfulness. And I do believe that appreciation is a form of currency and people can show that they appreciate you with money. One of the ways to allow for that, as a business owner, is to tell really meaningful stories about the work that you’re doing.”

Here's What You'll Learn:

  • Why Tony doesn’t like the word “gratitude” and the word he prefers to use instead
  • A technique that can help you prioritize what to spend your money
  • Three different ways you can price your product (and why you want to understand the first two but use the third)
  • What we’re most thankful for this year

The two of us attended a sunset Yoga on the Mountain Hike with the Asheville Wellness Tours gang not too long ago and it was truly an incredible experience. We took a short, leisurely hike through a lush forest filled with ferns and plenty of shade. Once we made it to the top fo the mountain, the sun was on its way down, casting purple-pink hues across the horizon. We laid down on our mats as our instructor Sue Ann led us through a relaxing yoga flow. Did we mention there were cows? Yes, cows! We did yoga with the cows! All we can say is this: even if you don’t with his giveaway, we highly recommend this wellness experience.

Whether you take one of their tours, we're sure you'll love their stories. There's a lot to learn from their choice to combine their strengths in travel operations, logistics, and wellness to make one of Asheville's most unique tours.

Enjoy!

In this episode, we sit down with Connie Matisse, Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of East Fork Pottery.

It's almost impossible to live in Asheville and not have heard of East Fork but, just in case, East Fork Pottery East For makes beautiful ceramic dinnerware and pottery using materials from the local Blue Ridge Mountains mountains.

Founded in 2009 by Alex Matisse, Connie Matisse, and John Vigeland, the company has grown quickly from a small group of friends and artists who had a good “hunch” and creative sense of style to a full-blown, nationally-recognized ceramic business with multiple product lines, an ever-growing need for warehouse and factory space, and an executive team. Despite its growth, East Fork has strived to remain true to its mission: create beautiful, durable, and timeless ceramics in the U.S. following sustainable and ethical practices.

In this Episode you'll learn:

  • The behind-the-scenes story of how East Fork got its start from Connie’s point of view
  • Connie explains how East Fork grew from a small pottery company to a national brand and shares some of the growing pains they experienced along the way
  • Advice for deciding whether or not you should go into business with your friends and loved ones and how to maintain a balanced relationship once you do
  • The unique customer service strategy that East Fork follows
  • East Fork’s strategy for creating engaging Instagram and newsletter content in order to nurture and gently “nudge” customers
  • How to know if you should turn your craft into a business
  • The three East Fork products Connie recommends getting first
  • Connie’s point of view on the city of Asheville and how it’s changed over the years
  • Connie’s favorite spots in Asheville
  • Exciting initiatives coming up in the future for East Fork

If there's one theme we can highlight from our first 10 interviews with Asheville locals, it's this: Just Start.

Throughout the episode, we share the various ways that our interviewees began their journey towards becoming who they are today. We learn that “getting started” looks different for everyone. For some, it’s taking baby steps and dabbling in their curiosities as side hobbies. For others, it’s making a giant leap of faith and quitting their corporate job to start a new business.

Although we’re publishing this podcast episode at the end of the season, this is actually a fantastic introductory episode if you’re new to the Making It in Asheville podcast! You’ll get to hear a little bit from each of our interviewees this season, and, if you like what you hear, we encourage you to go back and listen to the full episode with them.

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL LEARN - Get an overview of who we interviewed this season and what they’re all about - Discover the many different ways our interviewees have gotten started —and grown— in their industry and career. - Learn why getting started now is better than getting started later.

We hope this episode inspires you to start working on your next big project as much as did for us!

In this episode, we dive deeper into a topic we’ve been talking a lot about recently: The Trusted Advisor Theory.

It’s a theme that has come up a lot throughout the Season 1 podcast interviews with local Asheville makers. We figured it was about time to explicitly talk about it on the podcast.

The Trusted Advisor Theory says that if you slowly build trust with your tribe over time, it'll pay dividends in the long-run.

We explain more about this, as well as seven ways you can build trust with customers (and potential customers), in this episode.

We hope you enjoy!

After publishing 14 episodes and 10 podcast interviews, we’re wrapping this season up with just the two of us. We wanted to take a moment to celebrate our three-month milestone of both living and working in Asheville by sharing some insights on how we’ve been measuring success in our new business. Or, if you’ll indulge us, how we’ve been making it.

Here’s What You’ll Learn: - Why it’s crucial to measure success, no matter what size or stage your business is in - The three ways we’re tracking for success in our own (and 3-month old) business - The difference between measuring what’s in your controls vs. outside of your control (and which one you should pay most attention to) - How to go about building the right kind of relationships that will eventually lead to more sales - Why delivering on your promise is one of the best and “low-hanging fruit” ways to maintain clients and gain new ones

“It was either I build this at my house or I build a company.” – Andrew Nehlig

In this episode, we interview Andrew Nehlig, founder of Sauna House (formerly known as Bada Bastu), a Nordic-style bathhouse located in the South Slope area of Asheville. Sauna House specializes in hot-cold therapy through a unique sauna and cold plunge circuit.

So how did this all come to be?

Almost ten years ago, a friend recommended that Andrew start using cold water baths to ease his sore muscles after playing intense street hockey games. So Andrew decided to start plunging in the non-temperature controlled pool behind his apartment complex in San Francisco. Later on, he discovered an abandoned sauna in the basement of his apartment building and was surprised to find that it still worked. Suddenly, Andrew had hot-cold therapy in his life every day. The benefits were astounding.

Over the years, he simply could not stop thinking about hot-cold treatment. “It was either I build this at my house or I build a company,” says Nehlig. He realized that he was on to something and that other people needed to experience the “relaxation high” he had felt. Thus, the idea for Sauna House was born.

In this episode, here’s what you’ll learn: - How and why Andrew started Sauna House - How hot-cold therapy works and why it is good for our health - Advice for athletes interested in hot-cold therapy - The process Andrew went through to financially fund his business - What’s coming up next for Sauna House - Andrew’s favorite places to go in Asheville

Sauna House opened its doors in the South Slope area of Asheville in early 2019. They offer Hot Cold Relax (TM) therapy, massage treatments, and a unique wellness community.

If you’re wondering what exactly is Hot Cold Relax therapy, you’re not alone. It works like this: you spend 15 minutes in a hot sauna, followed by a quick cold shower rinse and a cold plunge for 3 minutes in a small 50-something degree pool. After that, you simply relax at room temperature for a few minutes. You repeat the circuit two to four times for the best results.

According to many scientific studies, hot-cold therapy has numerous physical and mental health benefits including reducing inflammation, stabilizing mood, improving endurance and athletic performance, and decreasing the likelihood of certain aging diseases. But most importantly, you just feel good after doing it.

We hope you enjoy this episode!

"One of the great fallacies of working and life I find is this work-life balance because there is no such thing as work-life balance because my work is life and life is my work." - Phoebe Esmon

We met Phoebe at a bar. After all, isn’t that where some of the best friendships start? She was bartending at Gan Shan Station when Tony walked in and asked about the vermouth selection — using a little trick he learned from a friend when deciding whether or not you should order a Negroni. Phoebe’s response was simply “I’ll make you a great Negroni.” And that she did.

It becomes immediately clear that Phoebe Esmon and her partner, Christian Gaal, know their spirits. While they define themselves as “cocktail bartenders,” we see them as much more than that: they are artists, historians, and teachers. They are two fountains of knowledge overflowing with fun factoids like when dry vermouth was born and why the VSOP label on Cognac isn’t actually French.

Though their business, Spirit Animal Bev, Phoebe and Christian work with local businesses to help them craft beverage menus and recipes to fit their brand or event — much like you’d hire a chef to oversee the menu development for a restaurant. They have worked with many local Asheville businesses around town including Katie Button’s Nightbell (now closed) and Cúrate; Gan Shan Station; and Eda Rhyne. They have taught classes on amari, trained numerous bartenders and restaurant staff, and worked closely with distilleries in developing new recipes. They'll even bartend your wedding via their event business, called Party Animal.

Phoebe is also the Co-Dean of Bartending and Hospitality for Portland Cocktail Week, where she is developing a bartending curriculum with Sother Teague (Teague is the beverage director of Amor y Amargo, a famous bitter bar in NYC, author of I’m Just Here for the Drinks, and host of The Speakeasy podcast).

Their latest projects include a running a soon-to-open natural wine speakeasy called Pink Moon that will open up behind The Double Crown later on this year.

Phoebe will also be helping Melissa Gray develop cocktails for her new cake and cocktail bar, RosaBees, which we talked about in Episode 11 during our interview with Melissa.

Here’s what you’ll learn: - Why Phoebe and Christian decided to move to Asheville - What special projects they’re working on now (spoiler: we told you a little about the speakeasy but that's not all) - Christian’s advice for what to do when you see a black bear - Weird liquor laws in North Carolina - The two main types of ratios in cocktails - Why ice is so important when making cocktails and the three steps to making better ice at home - What you need to stock your own cocktail bar at home - How to buy better tasting, purer, and more sustainable tequila

We hope you enjoy this episode!

“You do it for passion, you do it for love." – Melissa Gray In this episode, we sit down with Melissa Gray, the founder and artist behind Cakes by Gray, to find out how she started and grew her cake business in Asheville.

Melissa was a long-time food service veteran who decided to follow her passion for pastry and head to culinary school. In the years since, she’s grown to become one of the premier cake artists in Asheville — a city with a booming wedding industry — and grown her business from her kitchen, to a shared wedding space, and then to a brand new brick and mortar.

We think you’ll love her straight-shooting discussion on being a business owner (and her trifle cake shooters, too).

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • How Melissa started and grew her cake business, Cakes by Gray
  • The importance of choosing the right business name (and domain name)
  • Why Melissa chose to specialize in pastry and not cooking
  • The inside scoop of Melissas soon-to-open dessert and cocktail bar, Rosabees
  • Melissa’s favorite restaurants and things to do in Asheville (and the greatest ever from the Biltmore Estate)
  • The worst days for eating seafood in a restaurant
  • Advice for aspiring bakers and why she thinks going to culinary school is crucial

Does starting your own business mean you're more or less independent?

In our tenth podcast episode, we take a break from interviewing Asheville locals and share a conversation around the theme of independence while owning a business.

In this episode, you’ll:

  • Discover what we mean by the “independence paradox”
  • Hear some of our thoughts (and fears!) around being an independent business owner versus working for someone else
  • Learn about some of the systems we use to keep ourselves on track and keep our fears out of the driver’s seat
  • Listen to our vision for Independence Day 2020

Two months before recording this podcast, we started a marketing agency called Making It Creative. Although we feel more "independent" working for ourselves, we're also feeling a surprising amount of dependency on the work we do and the service we provide to others. This is what we're calling "The Independence Paradox."

In this episode, we interview PJ Jackson, co-owner of The Chop Shop Butchery in Asheville, North Carolina. PJ and his business partner, Matt Helms, formerly worked as the head butcher and manager at The Chop Shop Butchery, respectively. In 2017, after years of working together, they had the opportunity to buy the shop outright – and so they did.

In the years since they’ve made many changes ranging from repainting the bathroom to sourcing different (and perhaps better) pork and beef from local farmers.

In this interview, you’ll learn:

  • PJ’s story of a massive career change (from medical sales to farming then butchery)
  • What he attributes to the relatively rapid success of their business (he and his partners purchased it just under two years ago)
  • How to tell if a butcher shop (or butcher counter) is legit
  • Ways to get the best cut for your taste and preferences
  • How to make sense of some of the more confusing food industry language — especially when it refers to seemingly healthy food
  • PJ’s secret to a great smoked pork shoulder

In this episode, we interview Sarah Hooker, the one-woman show behind two niche photography businesses located in Asheville: Sarah Hooker Photography and Virago Boudoir.

Whether or not her name means anything to you yet, you know her work. She took most of the pictures we post of ourselves on @makingitinasheville, on our website, and even the picture we use for this podcast's artwork. If we look good in the picutures, you can assume she took them. She is an absolute pro behind the camera.

In a town with a ton of photographers, we chose to work with Sarah for our business photographs, in part, because she clearly marketed herself as a “Personal & Business Branding” photographer — something we get into in the episode.

We used this interview to showcase Sarah's personality and learn more about her and her businesses.

In this podcast, you’ll learn:

  • How Sarah found her photography style and grew her craft into a small, self-sustaining business
  • Why career paths aren’t always linear and why Sarah believes her past experience working in different industries has helped her business today
  • The story of how and why we chose Sarah Hooker to be our Personal Branding photographer
  • What photography gear and apps Sarah uses (and what she recommends for those who are just starting out)
  • Sarah’s favorite things to do in Asheville from outdoor activities to restaurants

In this episode, we go behind the scenes with Nikki to talk about how she has grown her wedding planning business from a company of one to six.

Derek Herre was one of our very first friends we made in Asheville. We met him one night while out at dinner at John Fleer’s The Rhubarb, a farm-to-table restaurant located in Pack’s Square of Downtown Asheville. It didn’t take long for us to realize that Derek had a unique story to tell.

In Podcast 006, we chat with Derek on how and why he moved to Asheville (spoiler: he's lived in one of the coldest, largest states in America) and how he worked his way up to becoming Chef de Cuisine at one of the city's top restaurants.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • How Derek went from working as a "swamper" (aka dishwasher) to becoming head chef
  • Derek's top secret Asheville restaurants, eateries, and more (trust us: he knows the inside scoop)
  • His recommended cooking tools and cookbooks
  • His advice for aspiring chefs

In this episode, we interview one another on the move. You'll hear:

  • the biggest surprises about the move (we didn't use a U-haul)
  • the many lessons from finding an apartment without living here
  • what strategies we've used to "fill" our space without going bankrupt
  • and more!

After three weeks in Asheville, we decided to sit down and record a conversation about how things have been going and what lessons we've learned from the move. This episode gives you a closer look at both of us.

In our first official interview, we sit down with full-time Airbnb Host, John Hopple, in his home in (East) West Asheville. In this interview, you'll learn:

  • why we put buying a home and running an Airbnb on an indefinite back burner
  • great, practical advice if you're hoping to turn your space into an Airbnb
  • John's sage advice on work/life balance and finding contentment
  • and great advice for starting by making small decisions (choices)

John is less than one year into owning a home in Ashville and has recently gone through the process of getting his basement permitted as a rental unit. Within the Asheville city limits, this is a relatively big deal and two things we're very-much hoping to do in the next few years.

We think you'll love John's easy-going advice as much as we did.

In this Episode you'll learn

  • the problems with "Starting With Why"
  • the "Be, Do, Have Hierarchy"
  • and ways to leverage "Starting With Be" in both your life and your business

We recorded this episode as our final act before moving from Brooklyn to Asheville, NC. While the majority of our podcast episode will be interviews with Asheville's local makers, this episode is just the two of us sharing our perspective on the many reasons to Start with "Be" rather than Start with Why.
