Captured in timeless black and white, this vertical photograph invites you to take a slow stroll down a dirt trail lined with rustic wooden post-and-rail fencing. In the foreground, the deeply textured, grooved bark of a giant tree trunk anchors the right side of the frame, bringing an incredible sense of scale and depth. Beyond it, towering trees reach upward toward the soft canopy light, creating a secluded, meditative retreat within nature.

Shot from a low angle in rich, detailed black and white, this photograph centers on a massive, weathered boulder nestled deep within a shadowy forest canopy. The sharp contrast highlights every crack, texture, and natural contour of the ancient stone, while sweeping tree branches and delicate leaves frame the rock from above. The soft overhead light filtering through the trees creates a peaceful, almost secret-haven atmosphere.

This vertical shot looks up into the dramatic, winding canopy of an ancient oak tree. The heavy, dark branches twist and loop through the frame like natural sculptures, creating an intricate web against the sky. Surrounded by dense, layered green foliage and smaller forest undergrowth, this perspective gives you the immersive feeling of standing deep within a hidden grove.

Dedicated in April 1981, the 1.3 acre garden was built through the generosity of Mrs. Loraine Miller Collins in memory of her late husband, Earl Burns Miller. Following three years of planning, in cooperation with California State University Long Beach, landscape architect Edward R. Lovell was chosen to oversee its creation. The resulting garden reflects the university’s continued interest in international education, student and community engagement, as well as the Miller’s interests in nature and wellness. The university is delighted to share this educational, cultural, and aesthetic resource with you. – CSULB

The Enduring Pleasures of Art Nouveau via Art in America
It is difficult to convey the giddy joy I felt one day in Berlin—that gray grid of a city—upon opening an unsuspecting gate and feeling in my hand no ordinary doorknob, but iron in the shape of a Belgian endive. Its smooth curve fit elegantly in my hand, yet its form was so specific and silly. Three years later, I still look at pictures of it on my phone, longingly.
The gate, should you wish to track it down and feel the same small magic, is outside the Bröhan Museum, which collects Art Nouveau—as well as Jugendstil, the German (and, I’d argue, more beautiful) branch of the movement better known by its French name. Broadly speaking, the Germans leaned toward geometric abstraction and stylization, while the French favored facsimile, committed more firmly to oragnic forms. It was at this Bröhan gate that I realized I had perhaps been wrong to write off Art Nouveau, which I had long found sickly sweet—particularly in its tendency to merge women, nature, and domestic objects into those girl-tree-candelabra hybrids that set off feminist alarm bells in my mind.

4 Library Collections Filled With Culinary Treasures via Gastro Obscura
Today, there are cookbooks on every conceivable subject, from preparing insects to recreating Game of Thrones recipes. Passionate collectors have amassed vast collections of culinary books, often out of sheer passion and curiosity for the subject.
As I researched this article, I noticed a common thread in many culinary libraries, where individual collectors with thousands of books ended up donating them to grateful institutions.

An unofficial guide to block printing via Austin Kleon
As I said in Friday’s newsletter, pretty much all I did over spring break was make block prints and listen to dub reggae.
Several folks asked how I do it, so I made a batch of videos to share. I learned a few of these tips in the workshop I took with Dana Tanamachi that I mentioned in my “Living Seasonally” newsletter.
I want to emphasize that I am a total amateur at this stuff, and I will miss a bunch that you can learn elsewhere in tutorials by more qualified people.
That said, I wrote a whole section in Show Your Work! about how there’s a lot of value in learning from beginners. Because beginners have only recently figured stuff out, they know what a beginner needs to know better than an expert does…

Cutting Down Ockham’s Razor via OpenMind Magazine
We hear all the time that the simplest explanations are usually the right ones. This truth-testing idea—known as Ockham’s razor, after the English medieval philosopher William of Ockham—has been embraced by no less authorities than Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein. Today scientists invoke Ockham’s razor on topics ranging from Covid’s origins to cosmic dark matter, while folks debating a subject on social media regularly invoke it as their final arbiter. After all, why complicate something more than you need to? Isn’t it better to shave ideas down to their essential truths?
Ockham’s razor sounds logical and definitive, which is exactly what makes it dangerous. Not only is the assumption of simplicity often false, but following it blindly can lead to serious misunderstandings, both in science and in everyday life.

This Artist Turned Rough Sketches Into Real, Usable Furniture » Design You Trust via Design Daily
Jinil Park’s furniture blurs the line between fantasy and function, turning raw, sketch-like strokes into tangible, usable objects that feel like they’ve stepped straight out of an artist’s imagination. His “Drawing Furniture” series celebrates imperfection, where every wobbly line and uneven frame breathes life into the beauty of spontaneity, making each piece a poetic testament to creativity in motion.

60 Free Film Noir Movies You Can Watch Online, Including Classics by John Huston, Orson Welles & Fritz Lang via Open Culture
During the 1940s and 50s, Hollywood entered a “noir” period, producing riveting films based on hard-boiled fiction. These films were set in dark locations and shot in a black & white aesthetic that fit like a glove. Hardened men wore fedoras and forever smoked cigarettes. Women played the femme fatale role brilliantly. Love was the surest way to death. All of these elements figured into what Roger Ebert calls “the most American film genre” in his short Guide to Film Noir.

Bringing Life Back to a Massive Miniature of Hollywood’s Heyday via Atlas Obscura
In total, the diorama squeezes 450 scale buildings onto an accurate street grid measuring 11 feet by 12 feet. It was fashioned in the 1930s by Joe Pellkofer, a cabinetmaker, and his craftsmen, during periods when jobs were lean. This model once had five cousins that extended its boundaries, to include a model of the famous Brown Derby restaurant and the beach at Malibu, complete with crashing waves that moved with little steel rods. Pellkofer said that the models together cost $250,000 to build, and that a 25-person team labored over them for four years.

What is biophilic design, and why do you need it in your office? via Fast Company
The field of biophilic design aims to create spaces that optimize productivity and well-being. In the roughly 300,000 years humans have been on Earth, offices have only really been around the past few hundred years. Biophilic architecture is based on the concept that humans evolved in natural environments, and because of this, we feel the best when these factors are mimicked. Incorporation or mimicry of the natural world into our built spaces can greatly improve peoples’ health, happiness, and productivity.

I have seen this lack of accountability in real life many times. It allows any one employee to disavow responsibility for any action. “It is corporate policy. I can’t connect you with anyone else who can help you.” Even worse is the individual who performs heinous acts that they would decry being done to them because “It’s not me who is causing the issues. It is the amorphous ‘company’ that is doing it.” Corporations weaponize this inability to empathize in their workforce and “plausible deniability” to treat their customers with contempt. – Douglas
Accountability sinks via A Working Library
Buy The Unaccountability Machine via Bookshop.org
In The Unaccountability Machine, Dan Davies argues that organizations form “accountability sinks,” structures that absorb or obscure the consequences of a decision such that no one can be held directly accountable for it. Here’s an example: a higher up at a hospitality company decides to reduce the size of its cleaning staff, because it improves the numbers on a balance sheet somewhere. Later, you are trying to check into a room, but it’s not ready and the clerk can’t tell you when it will be; they can offer a voucher, but what you need is a room. There’s no one to call to complain, no way to communicate back to that distant leader that they’ve scotched your plans. The accountability is swallowed up into a void, lost forever.
Davies proposes that:
For an accountability sink to function, it has to break a link; it has to prevent the feedback of the person affected by the decision from affecting the operation of the system.

How to Use a Notebook When Your Life Isn’t Busy via Notebook Stories
A few months ago, I wrote about my latest work notebook, a vintage Filofax. It’s working so well for me that I wish I had bought a Filofax in this size years ago to use for this purpose. I can’t help regretting all those wasted decades of using random office supply closet notebooks (as well as some nicer notebooks received as samples or bought since starting this blog)! Now that I have found a satisfying set-up, I think I’ll be sticking with it, but the question is how long will I continue to need a work notebook if I am likely to retire within the next decade? This is just one more indication of my notebook addiction– I’m worried that if I stop working, I’ll have fewer notes to write, and fewer reasons to use notebooks!

Tatsuya Tanaka Captures Everyday Life In A Calendar Of Miniature Objects And Tiny Figurines via Design Boom
Tatsuya Tanaka is no stranger to miniature artmaking. He has long photographed and crafted miniature calendars of everyday scenes and created minuscule scenes using face masks and household items. His ongoing exhibitions named ‘MINIATURE LIFE’ at Ono Castle Hometown Museum, Fukuoka and Okinawa Prefectural Museum – both of which run until September 3rd, 2023 – testify to his decade-long commitment to finding and unfolding more creative ways to depict everyday life using miniature objects, tiny figurines, and yearly calendars visitors can own.

CARDIAC (CARDboard Illustrative Aid to Computation) via Adafruit Industries
Back in the 1960’s and early 70’s Bell Labs made some very sophisticated educational kits available to high schools and colleges. Designed for classroom use, they included wonderful manuals written by Bell Labs staff. One of these kits, introduced in 1968, was CARDIAC: A CARDboard Illustrative Aid to Computation.
CARDIAC is a learning aid developed by David Hagelbarger and Saul Fingerman for Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1968 to teach high school students how computers work. The kit consists of an instruction manual and a die-cut cardboard “computer”.

We finally made it over to the Valley Relics Museum (https://valleyrelicsmuseum.org/), even though it is just “up the street” from where we live. There were a lot of great artifacts including a huge neon sign collection. Check it out when you are at a loss for something to do in the San Fernando Valley.

For our 38th Anniversary, I set up a trip to a “glamping”* site in the high desert about an hour and a half from home. Huttopia is a French company that has dozens of sites throughout Europe (mainly France) but only a few here in the US. Rosanne and I used to car camp on occasion, especially when we were volunteers at Chilao Visitors Center in the San Gabriel Mountains. That said, the thought of sleeping on the ground in a tent with shared toilets and no shower no longer appeals to us, no matter how beautiful the surroundings are. (LAUGH) Huttopia provides an excellent, if a bit expensive, option.
This is a panorama of the inside of our “tent.” While it is indeed a canvas tent, The Trapper Duo Pacific comes with a complete ensuite bathroom with toilet, sink, and shower (Seen through the door of the rear of this tent. Solar power provides charging for your electronic devices, an electric fan, and heated water for the shower. It also has a king-sized bed, a large cooler (with provided ice packs), and a bear box to keep the critters out of your edibles. We didn’t spot any large wildlife on our trip though.
The outside of the tent includes a kitchen sink, gas grill with a side burner, and banquette seating. It was a great place to take in the surroundings and do the tons of reading we had brought along. There are 30 cabins in this Red Rock area of the camp which is about a 10-minute walk from the central compound. There are no vehicles allowed (besides camp maintenance staff) in the collection of tents, so it remains fairly quiet all day. We were alone in this area on our first night since it was a Wednesday, so that made it even quieter.
A view of the hillside from the tent.
Extraordinarily for the, usually dry, San Gabrial Mountains, a local spring allows several creeks to wander through the main compound of the property. The camp also is adjacent to Big Rock Creek, which flows quite well. We could hear the “burbling” from our tent. Many people were talking advantage of the cool waters as we drove into the canyon toward the camp. I had never heard of this area, but it seems quite popular with the locals. One can guess they are keeping it a bit of a local secret.
Huttopia provides daily activities for children, a large pool, a full-service coffee bar and restaurant, and many games like volleyball, table soccer, and board games in the historical game room. Many evenings include a campfire where you can hang out and meet some of your fellow campers.
This photo shows the area around the restaurant and gaming activities.
Sunset from our tent patio.
Each tent comes with some outside patio lights to gently illuminate the area and provide light for cooking. We had 5 meals while we were there. For dinner the first night I brought grilled chicken, some sausages, a baked sweet potato, and some veggies which were easily heated on the grill. For breakfast, we brought along a homemade, lemon-poppyseed cake, which went great with our morning coffee and tea. On Thursday we had lunch sandwiches and crepes at the restaurant and some lattes before hitting the pool for an hour or so. Dinner was homemade chili and spaghetti. Most of the food we brought was frozen, so it kept quite well in the cooler and yet was defrosted by the time we wanted to use it. The tent also included a complete set of pots, pans, and dinnerware, reducing the amount of items we had to bring with us. Overall we had 1 small duffle bag for clothing, a medium-sized plastic bin for dry food and and items like bug spray, and a small Igloo cooler for the frozen/chilled food items. This was good as you had to move your items to the tents using wheeled carts. All of ours fit into on trip up the small incline to the tent.
A sunrise view to the surrounding hills and another tent. They put a lot of thought into the positioning of the tents and native landscaping to give each unit a sense of privacy unless people were walking directly by.
Another sunrise view
A bit of the long history of Paradise Springs from the Huttopia web site…
Historical 1920s resort – Paradise mountain resort and trout club
Paradise Springs has a fascinating history! In the 1920’s, Noah Beery and his brother Wallace, both Hollywood actors, built stone cabins, a ballroom and other facilities on the site, including a series of spring-fed trout ponds, to create a popular destination for their high-society friends. Old photos and well-documented stories from back then show that Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, Mary Pickford and even the iconic Tarzan and Olympic champion swimmer, Johnny Weissmuller and were among the visitors. In later years, John Wayne was known to enjoy the area. Today, Huttopia Paradise Springs is a place where you can walk in the footsteps of these silver screen legends, and even swim in the same pool where the 5-time gold medalist trained.
Rock formation above the campground.
More running water in the main compound.
The office for check-in, the coffee bar just to its right, and a view of the large children’s playground next to a large grassy area for play activities.
Another shot of the boulder formation.
Overall, we had a great time. We loved being outdoors again in a quiet environment surrounded by bird song and rushing water, rather than freeway noise and construction of our neighbor’s house, which is still ongoing as I write. After check out on Friday morning, we drove 30 minutes further up into the mountains and met our friends for lunch in Wrightwood.
A map of the entire Huttopia site.

The fam took me to Smorgasbord LA in downtown LA for Father’s Day last Sunday (highly recommended). Among all the offerings on hand, I picked my favorite food, pizza from Quarantine Pizza, Co. There were lots of other possibilities, but this looked so tasty I couldn’t resist. – Douglas

We have a close friend who is a member of The Metropolitan Master Chorale here in the San Fernando Valley and she invited us to their most recent concert.
Choral music has always been one of my favorites and I was part of the chorus in high school and did musical theater all through my college years.
The program was diverse and the voices, both ensemble and soloists were amazing. It was a fine way to spend a Saturday afternoon, for sure.

I like science fiction a lot, but it takes a particular type of character-driven book to interest me. The Mimicking of Known Successes provides that and more.
Set in a far future when humans have moved to a new environment in a series of rings around Jupiter, these characters are involved not only in a mystery but also a relationship. While they discover the culprits they are also working to discover the depths of their relationship.
Like all good future fiction, the world is both familiar and alien to us and even a bit to our characters. One is an academic looking for ways to re-discover and then redevelop Earth into a viable planet while the other is an investigator seeking a missing person with a deep history.
I have read both this and Book 2 in this series (The Imposition of Unnecessary Obstacles) and look forward to reading more in the future.

From Amazom.com…
‘The Mimicking of Known Successes presents a cozy Holmesian murder mystery and sapphic romance, set on Jupiter, by Malka Older, author of the critically-acclaimed Centenal Cycle. On a remote, gas-wreathed outpost of a human colony on Jupiter, a man goes missing.
The enigmatic Investigator Mossa follows his trail to Valdegeld, home to the colony’s erudite university—and Mossa’s former girlfriend, a scholar of Earth’s pre-collapse ecosystems.
Pleiti has dedicated her research and her career to aiding the larger effort towards a possible return to Earth. When Mossa unexpectedly arrives and requests Pleiti’s assistance in her latest investigation, the two of them embark on a twisting path in which the future of life on Earth is at stake—and, perhaps, their futures, together.”
A woman-led mystery set in the Jazz and Prohibition era of 1920s America. While the main character, Vivian, leads us on a tight, dark, and dangerous mystery, the characters surrounding her also come alive in the book. It is always a pleasure to find a well-drawn cast of the characters to reinforce the heroine’s story instead of cliched cardboard cutouts sometimes found in other mystery books. Like Vivian, they are complex people driven by a host of wants and needs that sometimes lean on the side of less than legal opportunities. Delve into the dark side of a tough world that underlies the Roaring 20s we are typically shown in books and movies. It is a world of life, death, jazz music, and love.
I am waiting for the third book in the series (The Last Note of Warning) at the moment from the library, where I get the majority of my reading material, both ebooks and traditional print books.

From Amazon…
New York, 1924. Vivian Kelly’s days are filled with drudgery, from the tenement lodging she shares with her sister to the dress shop where she sews for hours every day.
But at night, she escapes to The Nightingale, an underground dance hall where illegal liquor flows and the band plays the Charleston with reckless excitement. With a bartender willing to slip her a free glass of champagne and friends who know the owner, Vivian can lose herself in the music. No one asks where she came from or how much money she has. No one bats an eye if she flirts with men or women as long as she can keep up on the dance floor. At The Nightingale, Vivian forgets the dangers of Prohibition-era New York and finds a place that feels like home.
But then she discovers a body behind the club, and those dangers come knocking.
Caught in a police raid at the Nightingale, Vivian discovers that the dead man wasn’t the nameless bootlegger he first appeared. With too many people assuming she knows more about the crime than she does, Vivian finds herself caught between the dangers of the New York’s underground and the world of the city’s wealthy and careless, where money can hide any sin and the lives of the poor are considered disposable…including Vivian’s own.

This is the one camera setting you should change for perfectly exposed photos
If you take photos in the forest or take landscapes in the sunset, there are areas where the shadows are pitch black or the highlights are blown out. You just can’t get it right in camera (ask me how I know). Unlike our eyes, cameras have a limited dynamic range, so they can’t see all the detail in both bright and dark areas. But in his recent video, photographer Christian Möhrle guides you through the one setting that will help you deal with this. It’s Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB) and it can be your secret weapon for conquering challenging lighting situations.

I always keep an eye out for a good mystery, and finding one like this that combines with one of my main interests (gardening) is an extra special find. This is the first book in the Saffron Everleigh Mysteries with 3 books already published. A fun romp through the Victorian world with a strong, STEM-studying, woman and lots of gardening and botanical talk. Book 3 is already on hold for me at the library, where I get almost all of my ebooks. — Douglas

The Lost Apothecary meets Dead Dead Girls in this fast-paced, STEMinist adventure.
Debut author Kate Khavari deftly entwines a pulse-pounding mystery with the struggles of a woman in a male-dominated field in 1923 London.
Newly minted research assistant Saffron Everleigh is determined to blaze a new trail at the University College London, but with her colleagues’ beliefs about women’s academic inabilities and not so subtle hints that her deceased father’s reputation paved her way into the botany department, she feels stymied at every turn.
When she attends a dinner party for the school, she expects to engage in conversations about the university’s large expedition to the Amazon. What she doesn’t expect is for Mrs. Henry, one of the professors’ wives, to drop to the floor, poisoned by an unknown toxin.
Dr. Maxwell, Saffron’s mentor, is the main suspect and evidence quickly mounts. Joined by fellow researcher–and potential romantic interest–Alexander Ashton, Saffron uses her knowledge of botany as she explores steamy greenhouses, dark gardens, and deadly poisons to clear Maxwell’s name.
Will she be able to uncover the truth or will her investigation land her on the murderer’s list, in this entertaining examination of society’s expectations?

As mentioned in my post, Pizza at Slice House by Tony Gemignani, Thousand Oaks, California [Food]
From Amazon…
A comprehensive guide to making pizza, covering nine different regional styles–including Neapolitan, Roman, Chicago, and Californian–from 12-time world Pizza Champion Tony Gemignani.
Everyone loves pizza! From fluffy Sicilian pan pizza to classic Neapolitan margherita with authentic charred edges, and from Chicago deep-dish to cracker-thin, the pizza spectrum is wide and wonderful, with something to suit every mood and occasion. And with so many fabulous types of pie, why commit to just one style? The Pizza Bible is a complete master class in making delicious, perfect, pizzeria-style pizza at home, with more than seventy-five recipes covering every style you know and love, as well as those you’ve yet to fall in love with. Pizzaiolo and twelve-time world pizza champion Tony Gemignani shares all his insider secrets for making amazing pizza in home kitchens.
With The Pizza Bible, you’ll learn the ins and outs of starters, making dough, assembly, toppings, and baking, how to rig your home oven to make pizza like the pros, and all the tips and tricks that elevate home pizza-making into a craft.
Make sure to explore additional books about pizza!
As many of you know, pizza is one of my favorite foods. Lately, we have been taking advantage of our Cousin Michael’s expertise as part of the US Pizza Team to check out Slice House by Tony Gemignani in Thousand Oaks. (Also in Simi Valley). Gemignani is also the man behind the Pizza Rock franchises in Las Vegas, where Rosanne was able to sample some of their pasta during a business trip back in April.
(Top Left to Lower Right: Veggie, Traditional, Sweet Gina, Pepperoni)
The traditional was a Sicilian-style crust with pepperoni and sausage and the Pepperoni was exactly what it says on the wrapper. My main goal was to check out the different crusts which were both excellent, with the Traditional coming out ahead due to its fluffiness and ultra-crisp crust.
The Veggie was chock full of the usual veg including green and red peppers, mushrooms, olives and more. The Sweet Gina was also a Sicilian-style crust with simple toppings of sauce and cheese. it must have been tasty too, as Rosanne ate both completely — something she does not usually do.
For us, Slice House by Tony Gemignani is a step above the usual neighborhood pizza parlors, as much as we might like them as well. The sauces were spicy, not sweet, which I prefer, the thin sliced pepperoni gets a crunchy edge all around (Yum!), and both crusts were flavorful with an awesome bite to them.
It was a bit of a drive to get pizza, but we will make a point to stop by again whenever we are in the area.
Cousin Mike Says…
Tony Gemignani is the absolute King of all things pizza! So glad you guys were able to try it!! Since you love tinkering around with pizza you should check out Tony’s book The Pizza Bible! I am positive you will create something amazing using some of the dough recipes.
You can try out Tony’s recipes in your own home by checking out his book, The Pizza Bible

We have visited Frogtown a few times in the last few months and we made a pit stop at La Colombe Coffee Roasters after a downtown lunch at Philippe’s with some friends. This cafe is tucked away alongside the LA River bike path at the dead end of Newell Street. Parking isn’t the best, but we got lucky to find a spot right outside. It is a great place to enjoy some fine coffee and chill out. Also, check out the regularly scheduled Frogtown Fleas which takes place in this same area. If you re bikers, this makes a great stop along the LA River Bikeway.

@douglaswelch Mu morning coffee today – Frogtown Roasf from La Columbe available only from their site or the California cafes. Tasty with a notes of marzipan, almond, and hazelbut. I had my typical Americano with the Frogtown Blend and it was so good I picked up some beans to have here at home. It seems you can only get the Frogtown Blend at their local California stores and online at the La Colombe web site. Get some if you can. It is lovely with lots of nutty notes, which I love in my coffee. For more La Colombe Coffee Roasters products, check them out on Amazon.
Sometimes you just need something to do a job, so when I was trying to organize all the cables by my easy chair in the living room I did a quick Amazon search. This unit has everything I need really. 3 USB, 1 USBC (for the iPad) and 8 widely spaced outlets to allow for wall warts.
Some of our stories include affiliate links. If you buy something through one of these links, we may earn an affiliate commission.
I then used 3M Command Strips – choosing a weight limitfar above what I might need (LAUGH) – to mount it out of site to the side of the sofa next to my chair. This gets all the cables off the floor, both for cleaning and neatness.
We seem to always need little items like these around the house, so I’ll make a pint of posting them here in the future.

The Paris Exposition is the one that brought us the Eiffel Tower (built to celebrate the French Centennial a year before) and a host of other architectural and industrial achievements. We spent the first weekend of April visiting my sister and checking out Desert X, a collection of art installations across the Coachella Valley. The weather was absolutely perfect for hiking to some of the artworks and enjoying the views of the snowcapped mountains. I highly recommend visiting, but do it as soon as you can. The show ends on May 7th and the temperatures will quickly start to rise to uncomfortable levels in the valley as Summer begins.

Here is something new I haven’t tried before. I had heard about it and even tried it at parties, but this simple dish can be dressed up in a number of ways. For my first try, I topped the brie (or bottomed it, actually, as you invert it to cook) with strawberry jam and some pecans. After tasting I think I could have added more of both, but they certainly added a wonderful contrast to the cheese. My puff pastry sprung a bit of a leak, so I will make sure to seal it better in the future, but otherwise, it was good-looking and tasty. Give it a try yourself.

I didn’t do the garlic bread base from the recipe below as I thought it was more than I needed to do. Homemade sauce, pepperoni, provolone cheese, and arugula were the toppings here. The Ciabatta bread makes an excellent, crunchy, “crust” for these pizzas.

Another in my expanding home cooking repertoire. These balsamic braised short ribs float off the bone, provide a great tasting sauce, and serve well over polenta (as done here), rice, or potatoes. The oven does all the work in this recipe after a quick sear of the ribs. Easiest dinner I have made in a while.

Julia Morgan, American Architect – JSTOR Daily
The architecture of Julia Morgan is inseparable from the built environment of California. A prolific designer, her work helped define what Californian architecture was and continues to be. More than 700 of her designs were built during her 46-year career as a licensed architect. Her best-known work, Hearst Castle, designed for the media mogul William Randolph Hearst Sr., exhibits the wealth that many have sought in the state, whether during the Gold Rush of the mid-1800s or in today’s Silicon Valley. Morgan’s designs for Mills College in Oakland helped create a specifically Californian architectural vocabulary for a college that needed to develop its own identity between the competing worlds of the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford University. But overall, Morgan’s career was shaped by a legacy of “firsts” and by her own understanding of how a woman architect needed to perform in a male-dominated field.

The Art of Becoming a Better Listener — Tactical Advice for the Startup Setting | First Round Review
If you haven’t made a resolution for 2022 (or 2023) yet (or you’ve already fallen off the bandwagon for the one you did select), it’s not too late to reset and reaffirm your intentions for the remaining 11 months of the year. But if typical goals like reading more or spending less time on social media are leaving you uninspired, you might be looking for something different to shake things up.
Ximena Vengoechea recommends one that’s probably not on too many resolution lists: Striving to become a better listener.

When I think of wildlife photography, I think of powerful animals photographed using long lenses in epic environments. That was until I met ex-ventriloquist-turned-wildlife-conservation-photographer Carla Rhodes. She has captured over 25 different species of wild animals in the backyard of her Catskills home, and most of the time, she isn’t even there to hit the shutter button.

In Our Time: A Christmas Carol on Apple Podcasts
Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss Charles Dickens’ novella, written in 1843 when he was 31, which has become intertwined with his reputation and with Christmas itself. Ebenezer Scrooge is the miserly everyman figure whose joyless obsession with money severs him from society and his own emotions, and he is only saved after recalling his lonely past, seeing what he is missing now and being warned of his future, all under the guidance of the ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Yet To Come. Redeemed, Scrooge comes to care in particular about one of the many minor characters in the story who make a great impact, namely Tiny Tim, the disabled child of the poor and warm-hearted Cratchit family, with his cry, “God bless us, every one!”

How to generate 100 ideas to write about in 30 minutes – even if you think you have nothing to say
Thread by @dickiebush on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App
My promise is to solve all 3 of these problems by the end of this thread:
You’re not sure what topics to write about
You’re not sure how to find the topics you’re credible enough to write about
You’re not sure how to come up with engaging ideas about those topics
1 rule before we dive in:
During this exercise, do not let yourself start judging the quality of your ideas.
The goal here is to generate a ton of raw materials, knowing you won’t write about 90% of them.
BUT – you will emerge with crystal clear clarity.

Italian Artist Creates Incredible Works of Art From Spilled Coffee
Italians are known for their love of coffee, but while most enjoy espresso for its taste, artist Giulia Bernardelli appreciates it for its creative potential. She turns spilled coffee into works of art that look like detailed watercolor paintings.
Many of us start our day with a cup of joe, but Bernardelli indulges in a dose of inspiration, too. The artist’s Instagram bio reads, “My future starts when I wake up every morning. Every day I find something creative to do with my life.” Bernardelli’s journey to creating coffee art began by chance. One day, the artist accidentally spilled coffee over her canvas as she was working. But rather than clean it up, Bernardelli grabbed a spoon and used it to guide the brown liquid around the white space.

Are you looking to become a part of “The Great Resignation” and find a new career?
Wouldn’t you love to have a magical compass to lead you through your life? One that would always show you the right answers on tests, lead you to the right college and then to the right course of study at that college. It would lead to your first job, your first (and maybe last) love and always show the path ahead. This isn’t some idle fantasy. We each have a compass to show us the way. This compass, of course, is our desire, that feeling, that pull, that tension — in some cases, an overwhelming flood of feeling that says “Yes, this is the way — this is the one — this is where you need to go!”
Career Compass will teach you how to use your personal compass to lead you to a more fulfilling career.

From The Collection Of… is a new series highlighting the amazing artwork of the world that is discoverable — and shareable — on the Internet. Most museum collections contain far too many pieces to exhibit in their galleries, so locating these images online may be one of the only ways of enjoying them. Over the next year or so, I will be sharing my favorites from collections large and small, far and wide. Follow My Word now to enjoy this journey through the — often hidden away — world of art.
A long time ago – back in 1998 — I had the opportunity to spend 2 weeks in Washington, DC while my wife worked on a project for ABC’s Nightline program. This meant I had a lot of time to fill with my then 5-month-old son, so I decided to do something I had always wanted to do. Spend my time visiting as many Smithsonian museums as possible. The Renwick Gallery sits next to Blair house, almost directly across the street from The White House. It was close to our hotel, too, so we spent a few hours there one day. Several pieces of art amazed me that day, including this one, Ghost Clock. Even when in its presence it takes some moments to figure out what it is all about. Only on close inspection and reading the nearby label did you discover that it was not a clock draped in a sheet, but rather a solid wood carving! This is an artwork that has stayed with me for years (including another piece from the Renwick that I will highlight in a future “In the collection…”) post. A photo really doesn’t do the piece complete justice. When you see it in person the effect is so striking as to knock your thinking for a loop. – Douglas
Wendell Castle, Ghost Clock, 1985, bleached Honduras mahogany, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Museum purchase through the Smithsonian Institution Collections Acquisition Program, 1989.68, © 1985, Wendell Castle
At first glance Ghost Clock appears to be a grandfather clock hidden under a white sheet. However, a closer look reveals a masterful deception: this entire sculpture was hand-carved from a single block of laminated mahogany. With its meticulous detail, Castle re-created in wood the contours of soft, supple cloth, then completed the illusion by bleaching the “drapery” white and staining the base of the “clock” a walnut brown. This work is the last in a series of thirteen clocks the artist created in the 1980s; unlike the others, it lacks an inner mechanism. Its haunting stillness and silence suggest eternity–the absence of time.

From The Collection Of… 3 in a series – Drinking Vessel Depicting Otherworldly Toad, Jaguar, and Serpent (650-800 CE) via LA County Museum of Art
This is an interesting and lovely piece and yet another artifact that is not currently on display at the museum. This is one great reason why I started this series. I have visited the museum on numerous occasions, but have never seen this piece before. It is listed as a Mayan piece from Mexico in the catalog. — Douglas
Drinking Vessel Depicting Otherworldly Toad, Jaguar, and Serpent
Mexico, Southern Campeche, Maya, 650–800 CECeramics
Slip-painted ceramic
(Diameter): 5 1/8 in. (13.02 cm) Height: 5 3/8 in. (13.65 cm)
Elegantly painted ceramic vessels constituted the premier form of artistic expression during the Late Classic period (550-850 AD) of ancient Maya civilization, and none were more beautifully painted than those known as codex style. Named for their resemblance to the Maya codices, or painted books, codex style ceramics such as this Drinking Vessel depict highly esoteric scenes describing the fundamental concepts of Maya religious belief and practice and the special role of kings as participants in the supernatural realm. — LACMA

From The Collection Of… 2 in a series – Madame Gautreau Drinking A Toast, 1882-1883, John Singer Sargent
We visited the Gardner Museum many years ago and I was quite impressed with seeing this portrait in person. The museum holds many John Singer Sargent pieces and this was my first introduction to the breadth of his work including everything from large paintings such as this to small sketches made in preparation of larger paintings and simple studies. — Douglas
Madame Pierre Gautreau, born Virginie Avegno (1859–1915), was Madame X, the statuesque sitter in Sargent’s most notorious portrait (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). Critics considered the portrait in scandalously bad taste, and the sitter’s mother asked Sargent to withdraw the painting from the Salon of 1884, which he refused to do. This much smaller and more intimate painting was done a year earlier, and was given by Sargent to Madame Gautreau’s mother. By purchasing this painting at the end of her life, Mrs. Gardner acquired an important document of Sargent’s career, and also a slice of her own history, since she had wanted her portrait by Sargent to rival the sensuous impact of the infamous Madame X.

The folks at National Geographic just did a solid favor for all the adventurous outdoor photographers out there. They put every US Geological Survey (USGS) topographical map from across the United States on one easy-to-navigate site and made them easy to print out at home.
If you’ve ever gone hunting topo maps via the USGS, you know that it can be a bit of a pain because, not only is finding the quad you’re looking for more difficult, the PDFs they have available aren’t formatted for standard printer paper.
The National Geographic website solves both of these issues. First, the homepage greets you with a searchable, interactive map: all you have to do is search for or zoom in on the area you’re looking for. Then, once you find your quad, just click on it and a printable PDF loads right up.
It’s incredibly easy. I pulled this one up in a matter of seconds.
