185: What to Pack in Your Pageant Winner’s Go Bag

Today we're talking about your pageant winner “go bag.” You've probably heard of a go bag before, but maybe not in pageant context.

A go bag is something that you have quick and handy, so when you've got to go really fast, you can grab the bag and it has the essentials right there.

You can probably start to imagine what this might be like for a pageant winner. Immediately after winning a pageant, you are often swept up into the very next; thing whether that is a media appearance, or a press conference, or maybe it's just to the gala or a coronation ball.

Oftentimes you’re swept into the very next thing and you might find that it is difficult to dig for all the essentials that you might need. And oftentimes somebody else is backstage packing up all of the things that you had to compete with. You might not even know where your essentials are.

Just like if you were going to pack a bag in your home, which I recommend for everybody. Just a side note here, EVERYONE should have a go bag in their home. This way if your house catches on fire, all you have to do is grab this bag and run out the door. For that, you might have a flashlight or my brother suggested that we have an AM radio. Things like cash and sneakers and things that you would need on the go.

This is essentially the same thing. In this episode I'm going to cover a few of the things that I would recommend you pack for pageantry.

If you want the full list, you can download it for free at:

winapageant.com/packinglist

That is a checklist of all of the things that you need to pack for your pageant.

What would be the things you would want to stick in your go bag?

Imagine yourself: you just won your pageant and you're getting swept off to do a press conference immediately after. Here are a few things you would need

  1. BOBBY PINS (or whatever it is that you clip crowns onto your head with)

Whether it’s bobby pins, miniature claw clips, or the snap on clips, you’re going to want something in here. They never give you enough backstage so you always want to make sure you have plenty on hand. With my thick hair I always needed like 20 extra bobby pins. So you never know.

  1. TOOTHBRUSH AND TOOTHPASTE

Now the reason for things like this (and also for the next thing I'm going to tell you), is that when you're competing in a pageant it goes by SO quickly. If you're eating snacks backstage you're going to want to have a toothbrush handy. That way, immediately afterward when you're talking with people, you're not bringing up the stinky breath and the same is true with stinky underarms.

  1. BODY WIPE AND DEODORANT

Now every pageant girl has stinky underarms, not because we're stinky in our real life, but because you don't want to wear a ton of deodorant when you're changing in and out of outfits. So you don't want to show up stinky to a press conference.

There are great body wipes called “Good Wipes In My Bag Swag”. After you've won, you walk backstage you get your wipe out of your go bag and you wipe all the areas that need addressed.

Then you're going to apply some deodorant. Because now it's time to start using deodorant again, you don't have to use it during the pageant, (in fact, I recommend that you don’t so you don't get it all over your wardrobe), but you're going to need it afterward.

  1. EXTRA BRA STICKIES

When you're sweating on stage, it is very common to sweat them off. So if you are using these for whatever outfit you are getting crowned in, bring an extra pair (just in case they start sliding around).

  1. PERSONAL ITEMS

You might consider things like chapstick and lipstick, particularly something that matches the color that you're wearing. You might need aspirin - the lights are so strong that oftentimes you can get a headache just from being on stage. You might need personal items like tampons or pads.

  1. PEN AND THANK YOU NOTE (or a list of people you don’t want to forget to thank)

As soon as you win a pageant, you forget everything. I don’t want you to forget your manners. So before the pageant, you're going to make a long list of the people that you know are important to thank. Some of those people would be your coach, pageant directors, choreographers and volunteers, sponsors, the whole production team. Any of the people who supported you along the way, including, and especially, your family. Those are the people that are with you through thick and thin, whether you win or lose, you're going to want to thank these people.. write them down on a piece of paper that goes in your winners go bag.

Other things I would consider putting in your go bag is your wallet with your ID and cash, and perhaps some travel perfume.

These are just some of the things you might include. Again, if you want the whole list, go to winapageant.com/packinglist.

Now once you have your go bag packed, before you go on for the crowning, you're going to want to put the bag backstage with a post-it note that says “I need this bag immediately after the pageant, thank you” with your signed name and contestant number or title.

This way if a volunteer is backstage packing up your things (because you're off to the next thing) the volunteer will see this note. They won't know what's in this bag, but it's clear that you need this bag immediately after the pageant and they will happily bring it to their Queen.

Remember, the whole idea of the winner’s go bag is: grab and go.

And that my dear is going to keep you organized enough to win a pageant.

In this episode, I want to talk about a question you’ll be asked either in an interview setting or in your pageant paperwork, and this is: what is a fun or interesting fact about you. This may seem simple, but it can actually be pretty overwhelming.

Most times you want to use some interesting, weird thing. Like “I can touch my nose with my tongue. Or “I have a double jointed elbow.” Or “I was born with a unicorn horn.” But these things are a bit crazy!

The thing that you want to use as your measurement for whether this is a good fun fact or not is: if this is the only thing that they remember, will it be fun and enjoyable and will they think fondly of me. OR will it be a little bit embarrassing? If the only thing that your judges remember about you is that you can touch your nose with your tongue, or that you have crazy elbows, it’s going to get weird.

Instead, what we want to do is one of two things. First of all, we don't want to make it weird. But we do want to make it fun and interesting. Now let's say we've got fun and interesting,

There are two ways we could take this answer:

Number 1: Answer it quickly.

Have a good time, put on a big smile and move on with the interview. That is the method for if you received a fluffy question, the type of question that you’re like, “why are they asking you this? This doesn't have anything to do with what I really want to talk about." So you could answer the question quickly, make it fun and move on. Or you could answer the question in a way that loops them back to the things that you do want to talk about.

That's a skill that I teach in the win a pageant academy and in the game plan, that's what I teach my clients to do too. That there are no fluffy questions. But sometimes, whether you're asked on your paperwork where you can't loop back very easily (or you don't want to), or if you do want to actually share this fun thing because it’s fun and interesting, here are four ways that you can actually discover something interesting about you:

1: Unique Accomplishment

A unique accomplishment is something that very few people do.

This is not, I can do 10 push ups. Because lots of people can do 10 pushups. That's not really that interesting. That's not really that unique. Instead you want to think about something that would peak people's interest.

Maybe you won the spelling bee when you were in the third grade or maybe you have been in Toastmasters for 27 years, or maybe you have, fostered kittens every summer for the last 12 years. Things like that. That's a unique accomplishment that might not have anything to do with how you could hold the title, but it would be a really interesting fun fact.

And if that's the only thing that they remembered about you, that'd be kind of cool.

2: Done-It-Once Adventures

Now done-it-once adventures is exactly what it is. You've done this thing once. So this could be if you climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, or you walked on a glacier in New Zealand, or you got engaged while skydiving.

Those are the kinds of things that they've happened once. And it was awesome. And if you're remembered by that, it makes you look kind of cool. That's what we're going for.

3: Fun Habits

Fun habits that you like to do a lot. This could also be thought of as things that you love or things that you hate.

For example, this could be that every holiday season I watch the movie the holiday and it puts me in the holiday spirit. It could also be I always buy white cars because I cannot stand having a dirty car. I love owning cars that are white, because you can tell immediately when it's dirty.

You see how those are interesting, fun facts, but they're not weird.

4: Worthless Talent.

A worthless talent is just a fun way of saying this is a thing you probably wouldn't compete with. So this would be like, you can recite the entire declaration of independence, or you can say the ABC’s from Z to A. Or I love clogging, or I know how to swing dance, even though I don't do it often, I know how. You know how to do a snare drum, or you can play Mozart's symphony without looking at the sheet music.

Things like that, that are talents that you wouldn't necessarily be in a competition against, or bring to stage, like dance or singing, but it's still a really cool talent.

Those are four ways that you can find a fun fact about yourself. Remember, once you discover what your fun fact might be, the test you want to put it through is: if this is the only thing the judges remember about me, am I going to be kind of embarrassed that this is the only family, or is that kind of cool.

And that my dear is how you win a pageant!

Today I want to give you two very specific strategies that can help maintain your confidence about competing in a pageant even when you've got naysayers and chase the dream that God has given you.

Strategy Number 1: This strategy is called “Re-framing” you may have heard of this before. It's very common in self-help and self-development to reframe something is to basically look at it in a different way.

What I want you to consider is reframing your pageant competition. Though you're running for a title that will represent your community, or state, or nation, I want you to reframe it as: instead of telling people that you are competing in a pageant, imagine what would change if you told them that you were running for public office. Right? If you told your boss or barista or your second cousin those types of things now instead of them being flooded with their uneducated stereotypes about pageantry, they will instead be flooded with their uneducated stereotypes about the political office.

Here are some similarities between politicians and pageant women:

1: Politicians have campaigns that they run on, and it's very similar to pageant platforms. Often even in politics, it's called a political platform.

2: Politicians support and speak for a group of people. That is exactly what you are doing as a pageant woman, right?

3: Politicians have a local, state, and national level; rules to win; and so do you. The same things are happening in pageantry.

4: Politicians also get voted into positions. So do you!

5: Politicians must prepare for very difficult conversations to come up at any time and so do you.

6: Politicians do appearances all over the place.

Now strategy #2 is probably even more important, even though it's not always possible and that is to plant yourself in rich soil. Just like a flower will bloom when it's in perfect conditions and it struggles to bloom in poor conditions, the same will be true for you no matter what you are achieving in life. You may have to replant yourself, find good soil, find a place where people will welcome you where they're cheering you on.

Sometimes, I understand you're not able to leave the ‘soil’ you’re in because it’s your husband or your mom that is critical of you competing. Oftentimes those things can happen, and so you can't just replant yourself, but what you can do is add good soil. So, if you're unable to fully get out of the negative environment and replant yourself into a fully positive environment what you can do is at least add good soil.

And that my dear is how you win a pageant.

In this episode, I'm going to walk you through five real reasons that women lose pageants and I'm going to give you some specific guidelines on what you can do about it.

We’re going to start broad and work out way to the more common reasons. The most common reason women lose their pageant is they simply don’t have ‘the look’, mostly because they haven't discovered what this pageant is looking for as the main spokesperson for their pageant. In order to win, you have to show up with your complete marketing package.

The next somewhat obvious reason that you may be losing your pageant is you are too stiff – like a robot, or ‘pageant patty.’ This often comes off as either not having enough practice or having too much practice. There are lots of ways to fix this problem, but the main one is: practice with real life experience! The third reason you may be losing your pageant is what I call a ‘failure to thrive.’ This means that you haven’t really done all that much to achieve your goals since the last time you competed. You have to show improvements and growth every year so that you can prove you’ll make the most of your year if given the title. The fourth area that could be holding you back is you don’t have a solid marketing plan. This is why having a Legacy Project is so important: because it allows you the opportunity to market yourself, your platform, and your pageant.

In the Win A Pageant Academy we teach a simple method of Promise-Proof-Plan that prepares you for all sorts of questions (download the free training here) and ensures you deliver your marketing plan onstage and in your interview.

If you are nailing the look, you have a solid plan but you still aren’t winning, it could be because you are missing a personal/pageant brand. Your ‘brand’ is deeper than your ‘why’ for competing in the pageant – your brand is your why for being on this planet! It’s your purpose and your passion.

In the Academy, we help you identify your personal/pageant brand because from this, everything else can flow!

Your brand is vital to winning! If you have the look, plenty of practice, thriving goals, a solid plan, and you’re still not winning your pageant, then your brand should be where you begin.

The very first thing that I do with all of my clients is help them identify who they are. It's so important for you to know who you are and what you are doing on this planet. When you become crystal clear on that, all those other things will easily fall into place.

My guest today is the beautiful Amanda Price of https://PassionsAcrossAmerica.com who recently completed my Inner Circle coaching program with the Pageant Interview Game Plan

In her words, “As Miss Crown of Tennessee, I had it all. I was going to law school, publishing another article, going to events, and traveling across the United States as President of the National Sports and Entertainment Law Society. But something was missing. I wasn’t giving back, and I felt very unfulfilled. I made the decision to start volunteering when I traveled. With my new will to volunteer, the Summer of Service was born.

“The Summer of Service was a project that allowed me to serve and volunteer in all 50 states. When I traveled for business, I would also spend time volunteering. Volunteering in this capacity allowed me to work with many different groups, support many different causes, and encourage so many people across the country to get involved in their own communities.

“I was inspired by how much of a difference one summer was able to make, but no one really knew what was happening except for the people that I was volunteering with. Something this good just had to be shared, so I started a blog and with it Passions Across America was born. “Through blogging, I’m able to share my experiences with different organizations, raise money for their causes, and recognize the wonderful people that make all of this possible. I’m also able to showcase other people and causes near and dear to their hearts.” – Amanda Price, https://passionsacrossamercia.com

This podcast has been rockin' since 2015, we've had hundreds of thousands of downloads, some truly wonderful guests, epic pageant trainings (if I do say so myself), beautiful reviews, and Awesome success stories!

And it's about to get even better!

When I started this podcast in 2015, my goal was to train you to win your pageant by improving who YOU are as a person and leaving a legacy that will positively impact the world. That's still my goal - I want to elevate the pageant world by training women how to nail it from the start.

I've got success stories up the wazoo of how women around the world have won their pageants because of the training they've received through this podcast -- for FREE!

And yet - the medium of podcasting is limited.

You can listen to all the wonderful trainings, but you're likely busy driving, putting on your make-up, doing the dishes or going for a job --- that's just some of the stuff I do while listening.

It's hard to implement what I'm talking about without the time or space dedicated to your coaching.

Plus, as a teacher, I know that the best way to learn engages multiple senses.
Listening alone means you won't retain as much of the information. In fact, Watching while listening and simultaneously DOING and Engaging with the content is the BEST way to learn...

....and therefore the best way for me to teach.

So - I'm rolling out a new training method: Win A Pageant Master Class series!

A Master Class is an in-depth training around a specific topic (just like the podcast trainings, but even more meat on them).

It's a series, because I'll be doing a new topic for each Master Class.

The Pageant Master Class will be taught over Facebook Video LIVE.

Each month, you'll be able to join me live on Facebook for a video training on a new topic.

After you've watched the show live, over video, you'll be able to ask me questions you have about your pageant in the comments of the video and I'll answer as many as I can right then and there - LIVE!
How's that for immediate feedback?!

If for some reason you aren't able to join me for the Master Class live, don't sweat it - you'll be able to go to the Facebook page after the training to watch the recording.

I won't be able to answer questions there after the live recording, but you'll be able to Listen, Watch, Do, and Engage with the trainings, which means you'll be able to learn it so much better than the podcast.

Now, the podcasts aren't anything to snuff at. Many women have proven that if you are willing to do the work, you can use these episodes on the podcast to Win your pageant!

So, the episodes that I've already created for you will remain available here on iTunes.

But, the real goodness happens on our Facebook Page!

Everyone is going to be heading there now to make sure they are caught up on the Master Class series.

Go to WinAPageant.com/MasterClass, which will take you to the most recent or upcoming Master Class in the series.
Like the Facebook Page Win A Pageant to stay up with your pageant training.

I'm really looking forward to this new format because we'll be able to get to know each other better.

I'll love seeing your name pop up on my screen that you're joining live and each video, I'll be answering your pageant questions and celebrating your success stories. It'll be fun!!

So, while this may be the last episode I'll be posting on iTunes (who knows I may decide to come back), this isn't goodbye -- we're just moving to Facebook.

So, head over to WinAPageant.com/MasterClass now to jump in with me!
I'll see you on Facebook :)

Last week, we covered what not to say in your pageant interview (http://winapageant.com/126).

This week, we're going to talk about what not to do.

In most cases, judges want a woman that is relatable. When you show up as an extremist, it is uncomfortable to the judges.

There are 3 spectrums at play that you have to manage with self-control and patience so you don't end up on the extreme ends of the spectrums.

Your pageant interview is going to fly by.

Not only is it fast, but interview is like living in a time-warp where every minute feels like 5 seconds.

So, you have to be sure you maximize every moment and communicate like a pro.

Today, we're going to cover the things that many women accidentally or nervously say that stand to waste your time and annoy your judges.

Pageant interview is the only phase of competition that happens behind closed doors, so it's hard to know what to expect in there.
Especially if you've never really seen it done right.

There are the obvious expectations of format, like sitting, standing, 1:1, panel; and the physical environment like if the interview will be in a hotel conference room or a school cafeteria and whether or not there will be a podium or other props.

I recommend asking your director all those questions before you get to the pageant so you have an idea of what to expect.

But still, regardless of all those things, there are some universal truths that you can expect. That's what we're about to discuss.

If you know these universal expectations, then it won't matter the setting or format - you'll be able to rock your interview!

There is no mystery about what the judges aren't looking for.

They aren't looking for a self-centered, mean girl who hates people.

What they are looking for is a much longer list.

We can't know the entire list of what the judges want in a titleholder (because frankly, they won't know until they meet her), but there are three specific characteristics that historically win - even if the judges aren't necessarily looking' for them.

The good news is: you can communicate all of them if you prepare in a mindful way.

The bad news is: so can everyone else.

More good news is: few women actually take the time to prepare

If you apply the 3 characteristics I'm about to teach you to your pageant preparation, you'll already be light-years ahead of the competition.

When so much of your mental, emotional, and physical energy is put toward something you view as a goal to achieve left in the hands of 5 strangers...

...then not achieving it can feel like a massive shock coupled with the stages of grief like anger and depression, even self-loathing and pity.

At the very least, even the most emotionally well-adjusted human will feel let down and the sobering reality of depleted adrenal glands makes you want to just eat chocolate cake, lay in bed all day, watch cartoons, and swear you'll never compete in a pageant - ever - again.

In this episode, I'm going to teach you to brace yourself to quickly recover from a pageant loss.

To save you the sad backstage tears, the fake smile at the after party, and the days or weeks of depression that pageantry could force you into - if you don't follow these steps.

Today's Question comes from Lisbeth. She asks:
Pantyhose - yes or no? The bare-legged look has been popular for a long time. Does it apply to interview? How about evening gown, especially if the gown has a slit? I generally liked going bare-legged during evening gown since I may be wearing open toed shoes, but even if I'm not, bare feet give me more a grip on the sole of my shoe.
But interview....what is your advice? Thank you!

Great news! The Pageant Interview Game Plan is now open for enrollment and we're celebrating with a free pageant course!

The Free Pageant Course is a 3-day video training that will teach you the 3 Rookie Pageant Interview Mistakes... and, how to avoid them.

You can enter your name and email to get the course at >>> http://FreePageantCourse.com

When you sign up for the Free Pageant Course, you'll get an email each of the 3 days with a video (each video is about 10 minutes) explaining why women make the mistake and how you can avoid it.

This does two things for you:
1 - You'll figure out what most women never figure out their entire pageant career because they keep making these mistakes and no one's told them not to. In fact, the first of the three rookie mistakes is probably the easiest to avoid, but still the most common mistake.

2 - This free pageant course allows you to experience a bit of my teaching style. You'll be able to see if we click and if you want to learn more from me. If not, then you can just stick with the free pageant course. But, if you are ready to learn more, you'll be given the opportunity to get into the Game Plan at the end of the 3 days of the Free Pageant Course.

If it's a fit for you, then you'll be perfectly primed to take it to the next level. If not, then that's okay too.

I'd love to see you in the Free Pageant Course to help us celebrate the re-opening of the Game Plan!

In today's episode, I want to share with you some advice from Ms Lu Parker, Miss USA 1994 about preparing for your pageant interview that I love.

In my pageant preparation, one of my goals was to constantly put myself in new situations where I could meet and interact with new people. The idea of this is to get more and more comfortable talking with ease to strangers in attempt to remove the pressure during pageant interview. As I prepared, I realized the more I had unique experiences, the more fun the interview process became.

Ms. Parker takes this to a whole new level! In this episode, I share her idea and use it to create a strategy you can implement to help you prepare for your pageant interview.

When you implement this 10-step strategy, you'll gain skills in leadership, flipping the power dynamic, and discover a flow for interview timing.

This is what led Alayah to begin her own campaign, Read the Way, which focuses on childhood literacy.
It has been a dream of hers to reach children across the country with her message and as Miss United States 2016 that is exactly what she is doing.

The top 10 contestants can usually be selected from paperwork alone. Most pageant women don't put a lot of thought or effort into their paperwork, but for my clients, we take days crafting it to guide the interview and give them a leg up. One question that comes up a lot is whether or not they should put their old pageant title on another pageant paperwork. In this episode, I'm going to share with you 7 thoughts a judge may have when they see (or don't see) past titles on your paperwork. Hopefully, this gives you the insight you need to help you decide for yourself.

There are lots of things to spend money on in pageantry from wardrobe, shoes, earrings, to not to mention week-of stuff like DVDs, gala tickets, special seating, backstage roses, contestant gifts... it gets expensive.
And, when you're working with a budget (as we all should be to be good stewards of our money), it's hard to know what's important and what's not.

Today, I'm going to break down how to choose your investments wisely so you reap a life-long return.

I did a 4-part series, starting at episode 27, that talks in detail about how to get sponsors, but there's another way to get financial support for your pageant and that is fundraising.

In elementary school, you probably sold candy bars, Christmas wrapping paper and lollipops as fundraisers. This stuff is for kids. It's a lot of effort with little return. There are other ways to fundraise, ways that can bring you far more profit in a shorter amount of time with a smaller group of people.

That's what I'm going to teach you to do in this episode. I want to change your mindset from what you may have known in the past of candy bars and bake sales. You get rewarded in direct proportion to how much value you provide. Let me teach you how to provide a TON of value and raise what you need for your pageant.

One thing that is obvious to most pageant women is that in order to win your pageant, you have to truly be a star. When you meet a star, you'll know it, but it's hard to explain what it really means to be a star. It's also evident when it's not there, when something is missing even if you can't quite put your finger on what exactly is missing. In this episode, we're going to unpack exactly what this 'star' quality looks like through the analogy of a real star in the galaxy. Then, I'm going to explain how being a star gets you to the top. Finally, I'm going to break down how you can exude that star quality to get to the top!

An awesome platform is vital to getting appearances, especially before you win a big state or national title. Your platform gets you in the door for appearances and media interviews. And when it comes to pageant week, what you've done with your platform is what separates you from all the other contestants. My clients are trained to market what we call a Legacy Project it's the product or project you lead that uses your unique skills to creatively solve a problem. One of my clients wrote a children's book that teaches adults how to read to children while entertaining the kids. Another created a diy home garden project in conjunction with Home Depot. I developed a professional home fitness video series available online for free. Whatever you DO with your platform will be your legacy... you don't want your legacy to be that you did nothing.

Today, I'm telling you the truth about the "Fake it 'til you Make it" concept. You've likely heard this phrase before when someone is trying to beef up their confidence toward an effort they aren't prepared for. Many pageant women think "Fake it 'til you Make it" it means to keep pretending you know what you're doing until someone gives you a big break. Those girls never actually make it.

The difference between those that actually Make it really depends on who stops at the fake it part and who moves into the make it phase. The people that have succeeded with this concept are the ones who have found the right tools and put in the work to make it. You have to actively participate I the making part, not just the faking part. In this episode, I'll show you how.

One of the main concerns of some of the loveliest contestants is that they feel they are talking about themselves too much. It makes them uncomfortable, like they are bragging. They say they are just too humble to talk about themselves. This is a lovely quality, and professional suicide. They wish they didn't have to share anything about themselves, but then, how would anyone get to know you?

Sharing your own accolades and being proud of your progress is an important skill in life. You'll attend networking events and people will ask about you, what you do for work, and what you're into for fun.

Believe it or not: people want to know you! They do! To be an exceptional pageant woman, you have to be able to speak about yourself in a positive light.

The most beautiful way to share an accomplishment is to: Share credit with others in the form of gratitude. In this episode, I'm going to teach you how to do just that. Plus, I'll give you five excellent examples of how it can be done.

Wardrobe is always worth considering. It's a contestant's worst nightmare to arrive to the first pageant rehearsal in sneakers and an oversized t-shirt you wore to the gym in college only to find all the other girls dressed in their Sunday best even though the paperwork said to dress comfortably.' Comfortable is a relative adjective. To pageant girls, it means to skip the Jessica Simpson shoes for their Michael Kors wedges and exchange rhinestones and lace for spandex and silk. In today's episode, I'm going to teach you how to decide what to wear to your pageant rehearsal.

I'm gushing at the seams from how proud I am of the women in the Pageant Interview Game Plan. They are so dedicated to their success and by their success' I don't just mean them winning the pageant, but influencing their community in such a powerful way.

The Pageant Interview Game Plan is an online course that consists of 4 modules: Set Your Foundation, Plan Your Answers, Prepare to Dazzle, and Game Day: Showtime!

These are the four steps that must be followed to nail your pageant interview. Each module is broken up into individual lessons that have homework for each one to get you further down the path to success. It's designed to allow you to finish one module every week.

When you join, you have on-going access to it, so there's really no time limit except for when you have to compete, of course!

It comes with a Play Book that serves as a guide to get to know yourself, clarify your mission, research what the pageant is looking for, determine your stance on controversial issues, and tons of stuff that will transport you easily from confusion to clarity.

It also comes with access to a private group on Facebook that is only open to members of the course. This is where I get to see all the magic happening! Every week day, I jump into the Facebook Group and get to answer questions to help my students excel in the program. And, boy-oh-boy are they taking advantage of this personal coaching opportunity!

In this episode, I share some of what is happening in there so you could see if this is a community that may help you with your pageant interview.

Controversial questions are the most dreaded of all, sometimes pageant contestants tend to believe that the judges are looking for you to answer the way they would answer so you share their opinion. But honestly, I already know you know that isn't true. Yet, I'd bet you still pray that you are never publicly asked how you feel about gay marriage or abortion especially in the case of rape. That's not what I want for you. Instead, my goal for you is that you WILL be asked these types of questions so that you are given the power to impact people and speak hope, joy, and life into everyone you meet! I'm going to give you the simple elixir to these worries of public humiliation and the catch-22 of controversy.

As a teen and young adult we are surrounded by people telling us what to do, setting boundaries, creating standards and delivering prompts we respond to. Our teachers lead us in school, our parents lead us at home, there's an RA with rules for the dorms, Coach who sets up the drills for practice and the Pageant Director that tells us where to be and when all week.

It's no surprise then that when you walk into your interview, you're expecting the judges to lead you through that process. Please don't. This is where it all goes wrong.

The judges are not the leaders of the interview room. They are looking for the leader and if you expect them to lead you will not be seen as their leader, but rather just another sheep in the herd.

In this episode, I'm going to teach you 2 qualities of leadership that you can employ in your interview room to maintain control and lead your interview.

In this episode, we address the difference between ability to have what we want and willingness to go and get it! Able is having access to the resources to achieve what is great. It's like when you are able to walk. That doesn't mean you're never gonna sit, but you are able to walk if you are willing. Willing is the desire to take action in one direction by leaving the comfort of another. Ability is being able to walk. Willingness is standing up from your comfortable couch. This is how some people live their whole lives...waiting around for opportunities to come to them rather than reaching out and taking them. If it were easy, everyone would be doing it. In this episode, I break it down into a simple process. Doing the work is going to be the hardest part.

Pageant women don't have the luxury of throwing away a single SECOND of the interview they are so short so you have to maximize every moment. If you've ever done a pageant interview before, you know that scary feeling of not knowing what the judges are thinking or how you did until finals (Ugh! The worst, right?).

In my experience, I've found that 4 major myths are to blame for that awful pit-of-the-stomach feeling that you get before your interview that leads to no crown at all. I'm going to debunk those myths for you, and show you how to replace them with truly effective strategies that will actually reward your hard work and have you blowing kisses from stage in your new pageant crown.

Did anyone ever tell you to use your interview to let the judges know that you are truly ready for the win? Just because you are competing doesn't mean you're really ready for it. A judge doesn't want to choose someone that isn't truly ready to take on the responsibility of the year. Specifically, your judges want a woman who has a clear goal, who takes action consistently toward her goal, and has a plan to collaborate with the pageant title to further achieve that goal. In this episode, I'll teach you have to show your judges you're ready to win!

One of the common misconceptions of winning a pageant is the idea that when you win a pageant, you'll be swept away into some fairytale land where you get a business manager, PR specialist and full glam team. The reason people believe this is because this is what happens in some pageants - namely Miss USA or Miss America.

But, for most pageant winners, this is not the case. In fact, when you win your pageant you are actually expected to be the one to book your own appearances. Sometimes you are contractually obligated to do 2 or more per month, so this is a necessary skill long before you win the title. In this episode, I give you the 7 steps to book appearances like a true pageant professional!

One of the greatest skills that pageant women learn is to convey memorized material in a way that feels new every time. It's a secret of actors, speakers, and media professionals. And it's a vital skill to win a pageant.

Usually, when a woman attempts to memorize a speech, it generally loses emotional qualities that make it feel real, relatable, and engaging. One of my greatest pet-peeves, and that of every judge and pageant director and audience member... is a boring, monotone on stage introduction or answer to an on-stage question. It's painful to listen to, makes you pity the poor girl, and gets hideously low scores.

I've heard so many well-written introductions that get wasted away with no emotion. In this episode, you'll learn how to add emotion into your introduction to help you memorize it without boring the audience, but rather spiking their attention.

In this episode, I'll teach you how to differentiate your platform from all other contestants by creating a unique stance of what you believe. If you go through the steps I outline in this episode, not only will you be able to write an essay that is totally unique and descriptive, but you'll also be able to explain how it's different from others to the media, your judges, and sponsors. It's fun to imagine how you can make an impact on the world by standing for what you believe.

I call this the Perfect Pageant Platform Outline because it's simple, real, and will differentiate you from the competition. It consists of 5 questions. The answer to each question becomes a paragraph in your essay. Depending on length, you may combine some of the paragraphs, but you should still have 5 distinct parts in this order. I'll give you all 5 questions and then we'll unpack each one.

As a pageant contestant, you know the importance of being memorable in your conversations, speeches, and especially your interview. The key to wow-ing your audience of listeners is to infuse certain elements into your conversation, interview, and public speeches that will leave a lasting impression and be memorable and valuable to the listeners.

The skills I learned as a professionally trained public speaker in Los Angeles would've been so valuable to me as a 20-something-year-old pageant woman. I want to share these tips today, because the more memorable and valuable your speech is, the more invitations you'll receive and the higher the payment you can demand.

In this episode, I want to share with you the 3 things you can infuse into every conversation you have to stand out, be memorable, and provide immense value.

Procrastination is defined as the avoidance of doing a task, which needs to be done, usually by doing more pleasurable or less urgent tasks thus putting off important tasks to a later time. Procrastination is caused by several things including pure laziness or low self-esteem, overwhelm, lack of clear direction, or an undefined vision of the end result. Motivation, self-esteem, clear direction and vision are all linked together. In pageantry, or any other quest for massive success, this is called a Strategy. When you have a strategy of how to get to where you’re going, you’re focus is not distracted, it’s laser-sharp, because you see the ultimate vision and it makes you salivate for success!

In this episode, I break down the 5 steps to clear your mind of clutter and get out of the hamster wheel of procrastination so you can finally win your pageant.

Most people (90%) are average in life and in pageants. That’swhy it’s such an honor to place in the Top 5 of 50 contestants.I’ve coached thousands of women all across the US in every majorpageant system, and the ones that end up in the top 10% are thedo-ers, not the dreamers. But only 10% of women competing (who alsohave the dream, by the way), are do-ers. Only 10% of these womentake consistent and committed action toward their goal. The top 5are an elite group of action-takers that will likely be successfulno matter what they attempt to accomplish. Why? Because they aren’tafraid of what they don’t know.

In today’s episode I want to share with you a key to success. It’s simple, but it is not easy. It’s called Action.

Taking action is the number one thing that separates the good from the excellent – all the people with amazing ideas from those with amazing results. Taking actions means using the knowledge that you’re gaining from teachers, coaches, books, life wisdom…even this podcast…and allowing it to flow through your strengths and your skills and take action to help others. People who don’t take action, aren’t releasing their knowledge into the world. Imagine a running creek of water that is constantly refreshed, taking in new information and sharing it on down the road. If nothing is flowing through you, you’re either a swampland or a flood. If you aren’t gaining anything new to pass along, you’re swampy. If you are only gaining new information and not taking action to let it flow through your, you’re flooding. Other people can tell if you’re swampy or flooding and no one wants to hire someone that is seen as swampy or flooding – not even pageant judges. In this episode, I’ll share with you the 3 simple steps to take action to achieve your big goals!

Before my client commits to a pageant, I always recommend that she talk with former titleholders to best understand her experience from her perspective. With multiple perspectives, you get a stronger view of whether or not this pageant would be a good fit for you. I did this the first time I competed in a state pageant and I learned a TON – nothing that scared me away from the pageant, but every piece of insight and advice set me up for success in my competition. Of course, any time you are asking for anything, even advice, from a former titleholder, you have to approach it with grace and respect. In this episode, I’ll give you a list of what to do and what not to do when approaching a former titleholder of your pageant. http://winapageant.com/55

Today's episode is going to be a little different. I get a lot of questions over email and social media. Quick questions that have a pretty short and to-the-point answer. I always respond to anyone who messages or emails me - so please don't be shy if you have a question. Email Alycia@WinAPageant.com

A few weeks ago, I posted some answers to your questions on YouTube, and I wanted to make sure you got the answers here, too. These are really great questions - most of them are about wardrobe choices for various phases of competition, and there's one whammy one at the end about current events.

Pageant Questions that are answered in this episode:

  1. What are the best colors for interview outfits?
  2. Do I have to get the nude 'tippy top' shoes for swimsuit?
  3. Does it matter if I wear shiny or dull (matte) shoes for interview?
  4. Is it okay to have my evening gown not quite touch the floor?
  5. If I'm competing in the same pageant two years in a row, can I wear the same dress, fun fashion, swimwear, etc?
  6. Do I have to get hair extensions?
  7. What kind of make-up should I use?
  8. What are good snacks to have backstage during my pageant?
  9. How can I avoid/treat blisters at the pageant?
  10. Other than watching the news, are there any great resources for catching up on current events?

Your farewell speech is sort of your final impression. It’s your opportunity to show gratitude to your team and final moment to inspire others and leave a legacy….It’s what you want your fans and supporters to remember of your reign. It’s important to make it humble, yet full of personality, gratitude, and inspiration. Plus, most women will continue to compete in this pageant system or others, so it’s extra-vital that you don’t sound flippant or ungrateful to the pageant community. Also, I don’t want your farewell to be the one that everyone goes to the bathroom during or yawns and whispers through. In this episode, I’ll break down the 5 main components of your Farewell in a beautiful outline, plus I’ll share some specific advice on how to record it so you sound magnificent!

Many pageants invite the contestants to prepare a brief opening statement or a closing statement that is presented during your interview, as an on-stage introduction, or in your on-stage question portion. This is an incredibly important part of your competition and you have to know how to prepare for it so you can start and end strong. Since you have time to prepare for this, the judges will expect you to have full control in this moment to help them really understand you in a very short amount of time. I best way to prepare for writing your statement is to consider the highlights of 3 snapshots in time: your past, your present, and your future. In this episode, I unpack each of these and help you create an awesome intro for your upcoming pageant!

In this episode, I’m discussing how to dress like a true pageant queen. It’s simple, but not so easy. It comes down to what you have in your closet. And if you’re listening, you need to update your closet. As you grow (up, old, into yourself), you have new priorities, responsibilities, and personality! Whether you like it or not, you’re judged by your appearance and every woman knows that what you wear has a lot to do with how you feel. If you are still holding onto things that no longer represent the new you (or the best you), then you are doing yourself a disservice, and others will know it too. I really love this process because it lets me take a fresh look at who I am and how I want to present who I am to others that don’t know me. And it doesn’t need to be difficult. I broke my process into 7 steps that I’ll share with you in this episode.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions: that you have to win to achieve success. The truth is the winners are already achieving success….and that’s why they win. To set yourself up for success, you have to commit to growth, happiness, and success. That's what the Year of You is really all about. The beauty of dedicating the full year to…you, is that it becomes less about the outcome of a particular situation and more focus is put on the growth during the journey. Instead of being concerned with what you can’t control, you shift your focus to what you can control. That's how women win pageants! Let me show you how in this episode.

In this episode, we’re talking about the word “Grace” which is frequently used to describe pageant women as they glide across the stage or move like a ballet dancer. “She’s so graceful.” Socially, when someone ‘gives someone grace’ they essentially are looking past their flaws. Grace is giving someone something wonderful that they do not deserve. What does this have to do with pageantry? A TON! If you can cultivate grace and learn to express it on stage and in your interview, you’ll be seen as love, truth, and hope. And if you are the only contestant oozing love, truth, and hope – who can stop you?!

Many pageant contestants believe in order to win, they must project some illusive image of perfection – the perfect hair, perfect nails, perfect teeth, perfect walk, talk, smile, etc. But, when it comes time for her to deliver her on-stage answer to a tough political question or hug a child at an appearance, ‘perfection’ is far less attractive. In these areas, on-lookers would rather experience someone who is real, approachable, likeable and trustworthy. The truth is: The more real you are, the more approachable, likeable, and trustworthy you become. In this episode we break down the difference between perfect and real.

When I first started competing, I was like many of my clients who believe that pageants are won on looks. And that’s because the majority of what is seen by the audience is the on-stage portion. The audience doesn’t see all the work that the pageant winners put in prior to their winning. The work is done behind the scenes, many months prior to the pageant, but the audience only sees the on-stage question. It’s really a shame, because women then enter pageants without a legacy project, and they really have no chance of competing against a woman who has had proper guidance toward an impressive Legacy Project.

In this episode, I’m going to break down the steps I use with clients to develop a Legacy Project that helps her stand out and win!

It’s not unusual to meet a judge in an elevator. In fact, it’s an amazing opportunity to connect with anyone in a short yet focused amount of time. Think about it: an elevator conversation with a stranger usually only lasts about 2 minutes and it makes an otherwise awkward moment into a remarkably pleasant one. What else do you do in an elevator but stare at the numbers lighting up above the door in anticipation of your floor. But, if you’re not prepared for a conversation those could be the longest 2 minutes of silence all weekend. In this episode, Alycia presents a step-by-step process with examples of exactly how to respond when you meet a judge outside of the interview room. The most common place: the hotel elevator.

Pageant interviews aren’t designed to be easy. In fact, I believe they are far more difficult than job interviews. Most pageants allow for anything. Therefore, crazy questions are asked. And you need to be prepared to deal with them. But, that doesn’t mean you’ll always have a slick answer to every question. Just as in real life people ask all sorts of dumb, offensive, provocative, inappropriate and rude questions when you’re least expecting it – so, you have to be prepared to react. In this episode, Alycia teaches 4 methods of responding to tough interview questions and gives examples for you to practice.

You’ve heard this a million times, “She’s got it!” “There’s just something about her…” “Wow – She’s just wow.” It’s the ‘It Factor’; the attractive quality that someone exudes which makes you want to be near them, befriend them, or perhaps choose them for the title or a promotion. You know it when you see it. So…what is ‘it’?! It’s Charisma! Charisma is a unique combination of characteristics, which allow an individual to standout in a crowd, appeal to an audience, and grab the attention of judges and others. It’s no secret that charisma has the power to persuade. If you’ve ever seen a James Bond movie, you know what I’m talking about. Charisma is something that anyone can exude at all times. Meaning, it has nothing to do with looks, education, skills, etc. It is really more of an attitude. I’ve created a list of 12 specific things that can help you develop that ‘it-factor’ charisma.

I believe in a pageant interview, you don’t need to know the questions as long as you know the answers. So, I want to teach you how to come up with a bunch of awesome answers through the art of story telling. Stories are the basis of human connection. We are able to connect with people through sharing stories and understanding where someone else came from based on what they’ve experienced. The best communication happens when people know you, like you and trust you. Knowing how to tell a good story is key to getting people to know, like, and trust you!

In your pageant interview, the judges are expecting you to be prepared to communicate your best self during your interview. That means, whether it’s 2 minutes or 20 minutes, the responsibility is on you. Therefore, you have to be in control of the values you want to communicate, the stories you want to share, and how you will make an impact as the new titleholder.  I’ll teach you the top three things you should communicate during your interview. You can prepare and practice these in advance so that you have an incredible interview and feel confident that you communicated who you are.

Just because you enter a pageant, doesn’t mean you have to want to win…yes, seriously. Pageant contestants sometimes get caught up in the need to win without truly considering what they really want. Here, I’ll teach you a 4-step exercise to help you determine your ultimate goal. You’ll be surprised to see some of the reasons that woman compete to not win their pageant. Teresa Scanlan, former Miss America 2011, is a good example of someone who won her first local, state, and national title and may have missed out on a longer pageant career if that was her goal. We can’t say for sure what her ultimate goal was, though I don’t know too many people who would bulk at a national title opportunity like that! This exercise is also helpful for every pageant you enter because it can bring up some hidden fears that you may have that you aren’t even aware of. These fears and insecurities can keep you from winning the title – unless you surface them now.
