What books inspire you to take action? If someone was to ask you which books changed your life for the better it might look a little bit like this list.

I have to admit I'm a total self-development/business guru/health writer book junkie! If there's a transformation in it I want to read about it... or at least listen to the author on the doggo walk via Audible!

The following books have helped me in some way in my business and/or personal life - but let's face it they are pretty much intertwined for us all aren't they?

I want to start the year off with some recommendations that you may find inspiring, useful, and if nothing else help you get a better night's sleep or get out of debt!

Talking all things Freelancer tax with Chief Accountant at FreeAgent Emily Coltman

If you asked today's guest what she does for a living she'd tell you that she translates small business finance and tax into practical common sense, following the innocent drinks "nan test" - if you can't explain a concept so that your grandma would understand, you're making it too complicated!

As the Chief accountant at FreeAgent - the online accountancy software company, she helps to make online bookkeeping and accounting for freelancers, that's not only very easy to use but even fun to use too. I use it and that is so true!

I couldn't think of a better person to invite into the Insider's Facebook group to talk to about tax and answer all our specific questions than Emily Coltman.

How to plan your very first photoshoot

The questions I get asked here at Inside Stylists HQ are a bit like buses. You don’t get any and then you get the exact same one three times within a few days of each other. Pension Talk with Ellie Lister from Penfold Pensions

Pensions! They're a minefield if you don't know how they work and if you're a freelancer and have worked in-house at a number of different places - all with their own pension schemes, it's doubly confusing.

That's why I'm excited to bring Ellie Lister from Penfold Pensions who are experts in freelancer pensions onto the call today to explain it all in plain English. Ellie shares the way Penfold runs the perfect pension for those with irregular incomes - that's us freelancers right?

Before we get started let me just remind you that as with all financial investments, capital is at risk and we are not financial advisors. Always do your due diligence

If you're thinking about signing up with Penfold or moving your existing pension across to them I have an affiliate link bonus for you to use. Just add INSIDESTYLISTS to the referral code and you'll get an additional £25 added to your pension. That'll turn into squillions after a few years of compounding.

Talking paint trends and getting colours right with Fenwick and Tilbrook's Simon Tilbrook

Today's guest is all about colour. As part of a family-run paint brand, based in Norfolk, they pride themselves on offering an exceptional customer experience in terms of attentive service, and hassle-free paint ordering but what I love about the brand is the incredible choice of not only the colours but the finishes - their paint is the purest matt I've ever used.

I'm really looking forward to talking all things paint and colour with today's guest Simon Tilbrook from Fenwick and Tilbrook.

Today's guest knows all about how to make sure your bedding is spot on for a great night's sleep.

More than just a bedding website the Secret Linen Store has fairness and honesty at the heart of everything they do. And as it's National Bed Month and World Sleep Day I couldn't think of a better guest to talk with today than one half of the sister duo who started the Secret Linen store, Molly Freshwater.

Today's guest's philosophy is that "your home should tell your story. It should make your heart sing when you open the front door and you should have something old, something new, something black, something gold. And always some natural wood."

She's a well-known interiors journalist, award-winning blogger, author, designer and now an online shop owner. She's a font of all things interior knowledge and I have to resist the urge to talk all things grey hair whenever I see her.

Jen Stanbrook has been the go-to leader in Pinterest for many years - in fact, we were sat next to each other during a press lunch and I told her then and there that I HAD to have her on the show. Jen was my first guest on the Facebook Lives I did during lockdown. She was Ace! She shared all her knowledge, answered everyone's questions, and set us up to win when we pin!

Oh how I've missed you!

The unexpected turn of events this year meant that my "I'll just take a little break" turned into a full on break. But I haven't been lazing around. Oh no. I've been doing Instalives, Facebook lives and Zoom calls (like the rest of the world) but with fabulous guests who my stylist, writer and assistant friends can learn from.

The first few episodes will be the audio recordings from those calls.

The first one is up next week and is with Margaret Haig who works at the Intellectual Property Office and told the members of Inside Stylists what is and isn't allowed when it comes to copyright and photoshoots.

Keep an eye out for that one which is launching next week.

See you then

If I had to give you a hint for who today’s guest is I would give the clues ‘Purple, French, fabulous” and I think that gives the game away. He’s been an interior stylist, set designer and prop stylist for many years. He’s worked with a ton of mainstream brands including Le Creuset, Ikea, Wayfair, Waitrose, Hotel Chocolate, Jack Daniels, Clarins, Jo Malone and soooo many more!

He’s often found creating Instagram-able moments at top London bars and restaurants with his merry band of ‘Reli’s Angels’ I am very happy to talk all things interiors with Interior Stylist Aurélien Farjon.

Last month I made a mistake and I felt I should have known better.

It doesn't happen often but if someone had told me how to handle that situation from the moment I went freelance then I might have made a better choice. The silly little pieces of advice that will make your life that little bit easier, smoother and hopefully work-wise - busier.

I've been part of many accountability programs. Some worked well. Some not so much, but they all moved me forwards with my goals in some way or another. There's something very motivating about having someone who's got your back. Who'll check up on whether you're doing what you said you'd do and whether you're procrastinating or not!

But how do you find the right person? And what do you actually do during an accountability call in order to achieve your ambitions and move the needle forward on your career, health and personal life?
In this episode, I share everything I've learnt from group accountability (which really didn't work for me) to one on one coaching - which has me nailing my goals.

Today’s guest is a freelance journalist, presenter and producer of the indoor gardening podcast On The Ledge

She has a 20 year background in news journalism, and has worked for publications including The Guardian, the Financial Times, Gardens Illustrated, Grow Your Own magazine and The English Garden.

But, today we aren’t going to be talking about her very green fingers as my guest is an expert on how freelancers can pitch feature ideas to editors. She knows how to wow editors with polished pitches, and can clear up the question of who to email, what to say, and moreover what to do when you don’t get an answer?

When it comes to colourful homewares with a serious amount of inspiration from nature you don’t get much more on point than today’s guest.

Her designs are based on her nature photography, which is just as likely to originate from a tropical rainforest as it is to feature leaves from a local London park. Grasses, seed heads, ferns and trailing vines feature heavily in the modern, silhouetted designs, often printed onto natural fabrics such as silks and linens which have been dyed with a trademark ombre effect. You should see the backing cloths afterwards - they’re works of art in themselves.

Looking at her successful screen printing studio you would never know that today's guest nearly lost it all before she took the interiors world by storm. Now her huge collection includes bed linen, lampshades, towels, ceramics, and a huge array of gift items, not to mention the two multiple award-winning fabric and wallpaper collections produced in collaboration with Harlequin

I’m thrilled to introduce to you todays guest Clarissa Hulse.

Really getting to grips with colour with Karen Haller So, you think you know about colour? Think again! I thought I knew all about how colour effects interiors. I mean, I've been an interior stylist for 19 years and I've created countless room sets and produced hundreds of mood boards. But it wasn't till I sat down to talk with Applied Colour psychologist Karen Haller, number one best selling author of "The Little Book of Colour. How to use the psychology of colour to transform your life” by Penguin Life that I really got it on a personal level.

Karen's a leading international authority in the field of colour specialising in business brand colour, interiors, healthcare and wellbeing. She studied colour for over 20 years so she really understands how it affects us, influences us and how colour can be used to influence positive behaviour. She’s consulted on big name brands including Farrow & Ball, Dove, Fiat, and Ascot RaceYou may have seen her sharing her Colour Intuition™ system at Grand Designs LIVE, sharing her theories during Clerkenwell Design Week or when she co-curated the series of colour talks at 100% Design.

As if that’s not enough she’s also a British Interior Institute of Design (BIID) Industry Partner and CPD Provider, a former trustee and committee member of the Colour Group of Great Britain, and on the advisory board of the charity Colour Cares.

She’s just released The Little Book of Colour. How to use the psychology of colour to transform your life” by Penguin Life. I’m thrilled to introduce to you today's guest Karen Haller.

After reading the book and understanding how colour affects our choices, mood and how we decorate I have a completely new outlook on so many things and so will you. Karen's book is more than just an outline of which colour creates a happier mood. It's a much deeper level that will have you chucking out half your wardrobe and planning a whole new decorating scheme for your home.

Interested? Then listen on!

There are of course lots of similarities so if you're looking to hire someone to help design your home or you're looking at working in one of these fields it's essential to understand what each discipline entails. Today’s episode goes into the details I have found both working as an interior stylist and being part of The Stylish Supper Club, which is a community that brings both stylists and designers together.

The meeting of interiors minds When Emma Merry and I got together to create The Stylish Supper Club little did I know that I would be taken on a completely new journey into seeing exactly what interior designers do and how it differs completely - and yet is so similar to what us stylists do!

We wanted The Stylish Supper Club events to be all about getting interior stylists and designers together. When I listened to Emma and other designers talking about how Interior Designers work it was like de ja vu! It was exactly how freelance stylists work. Alone the majority of the time, not knowing anyone in the exact same position that would understand the everyday problems and would know how to solve them - or who would be willing to share costings/pricing/contracts. Sound familiar? That’s exactly why I set up Inside Stylists in the beginning. To bring the styling and writing community together and now with The Stylish Supper Club I'm chatting with more and more Interior designers too. It can only give insight and help to improve how both disciplines work.

IKEA’s interior designers aren’t like others. They not only design a space that looks great, but it’s essential to IKEA that all their designs are a direct reflection of how people actually live in their homes.

Their goal is to provide solutions to the problems people face day-in-day-out. To do this, they conduct hundreds of home visits a year so that both the products they create, and the solutions they show are a reflection of how people actually live. The roomsets in each store are designed specifically around the areas the stores are based, and the living situations of those nearby.

I am very excited and honoured to introduce today's guest Clotilde Passalacqua, head of interior design at Ikea.

Craft Editions began life in 2016 to celebrate and promote incredibly talented makers.

Having traveled extensively throughout Ireland and South Africa, meeting master craftspeople - todays guest has collated an incredible group of hand made products which are available from his website.

The items are like beautiful pieces of art and range from table linens and napkins to basket-wares, hand thrown pottery, throws and cushions, and home accessories.

By creating the website todays guest has built a mutually beneficial relationship with the makers he works with, paying a fair price that reflects the skill and time required to make the items by hand.

He travels far and wide from the Atlantic coast of Ireland, to the Limpopo Province in the far north east of South Africa to source just the right items believing that it’s important to meet the craftspeople he works with for Craft Editions.

The result is seriously covetable.

I’m thrilled to introduce to you todays guest Brian Waring Founder of Craft Editions.

I have no experience with being a contestant on a TV show and I'm sure it's massively stressful, very fast-paced and totally exciting but I can't help but yell advice at the TV screen when I'm watching the new elimination show on BBC2 Interior Design Masters. Do you do the same?

With this in mind I've come up with the advice I would give to the contestants - as an experienced commercial interior stylist on how to up their game. Of course I have my shoot head on not my interior designer head on but it's all for fun!

See if you agree with any of the ten tips.

Christine Leech is taking the crafting world by storm. Listen in and see how. I met today’s guest at a Freelancers Christmas party a few years ago.

She had felt flowers in her hair and sequins all over her jumper. I instantly knew we were going to hit it off. We were introduced to each other by stylist Sally Cullen and started chatting. I soon realised that I was in the company of a crafting genius - who I had featured on Achica a number of times and it took all my strength not to go all fan girl on her! I had three of her crafting books at home - which are beautifully shot and the crafts are impeccable!

She can turn her hand to absolutely any craft and has so many projects on her website SewYeah.co.uk that you could literally do one a day forever! I also counted nine of her books on Amazon.

In today's episode, I'm very happy to talk with stylist, writer, designer, and crafter extraordinaire Christine Leech.

When it comes to interior styling there isn’t much that today’s guest hasn’t done.

The list of clients she’s worked with is way too long to mention them all here - as there’s over 50! But to name drop just a few she’s worked with everyone from Debenhams and Cuprinol to John Lewis and M&S and it’s the same with editorial shoots. If there’s an interiors magazine out there - she’s worked on it from House Beautiful to Elle Deco. And then there’s the TV styling too AND the press shows! The lists go on and on.

  • Pinterest is a long term game. The more you put in the more you get out. Pinning everyday is the key to success. The general rule of thumb is 70/30 others content 70% and your own 30%. Pinterest likes you to use the platform and share the love.

  • Boards & Profile

Use keywords in your about me description but make is short and snappy - 160 characters

  • the optimum number of boards is 68 apparently but you can have 500! including- secret boards - archived boards

  • Name them (they’re searchable) - give them simple names like Delicious dinner not Carby dinner

  • Give them a description that uses keywords and still makes proper sence

  • Arrange the boards on your pinterest page so the most important ones are at the top.

  • You can segment content on the boards so crafts might be together or recipes

Seasonal boards

Think about seasonal boards and events (Easter/christmas) - and post to them 45 days before the event as that’s when Pinterest say people start their searches as they plan .

  • Start typing for the best words- what people are searching for will come up as a good thing to call your boards.
  • How to pin - Link every image to a website - obviously

  • Give it a good description using keywords

  • If you’re linking to your blog/website say that in the description - Check it out over on InsideStylists.com

  • add hashtags - 20 max - make them relevant - start typing after # it will come up

#your name / company / blog website

  • Descriptions can be 500 characters long including hashtags

  • Link your instagram to your Pinterest account - set up a specific board or pin where relevant - great way to get more people to your Insta account

  • Get a business account so you can see what is being shared, liked and clicked through on. Podcast images - Sarah Colson light for 2LG - so far has 9391 impressions (pinned 10 days ago)
  • ‘Pin for later’ on blog posts - Sophie Warren Smith . So people are encouraged to save your content for a later date and read it again.
  • Use a scheduler tool like Tailwind . I use Later. Not sure if it’s Pinterest approved
  • Make the images work hard: Tall images work best. If they have words on even better .
  • Pinterest likes fresh content even if it’s saving to the same link so create fresh new images to pin
  • 4-5 images not on web but pinned later

Today’s guest is a London based digital editor who's worked across many print and digital titles including GQ.com, Hello, Grazia, Stylist, Marie Claire, The Telegraph, Glamour and most recently Elle Decoration.

What she doesn’t know about digital media isn’t worth knowing. She specializes in editorial content that exceeds set traffic targets, digital strategy and native advertising, creative briefs and executions, as well as engagement-driving videos and social products.

With all that going on she still has time to be a mentor for the ReachOutUK mentoring charity and runs the natural and organic living blog-F Toxins,  with her sister Ariane

I first met her on a panel discussion and heard her talk all about digital strategies specifically with magazines in mind and knew I had to have her on the show and I'm so glad I did.

When it comes to designing a room light is one of the most important factors to take into consideration and that means choosing the right lighting. Today's guest knows all about that - having been an award winning designer for four years, creating bespoke lights for her own brand, interior designers and big name brands alike. Her exclusive designer ‘prism’ lighting is in store in Debenhams now. It has to be seen to be believed.

We talk about all things design, how Sarah takes on an altruistic way of working with rural, underdeveloped communities around the world and how knowing when a job is wrong it's just a learning curve. She sheds some light (pun totally intended) on what it's like to design for yourself and for brands. It's an inspiring chat with one of Britain's most up and coming lighting designers.

When someone tells you that their colour of the year is all about a connecting thread for  “letting the light in” and it being based on not just a UK theme but a global trend that's a unifying story of the world - you can't help but get a warm and fuzzy feeling and that's what you'll hear in today's episode.

Marianne Shillingford talks about the Dulux colour of the year and why we need it, what feelings it evokes and why so many colours go with 'Spiced Honey' - You won't believe it till you see it.

Her passion is obvious and I guarantee you'll come away with a greater understanding of why colour is so important in our lives as well as our homes.

When I started my freelance career I'd always hate it when someone asked me what my styling day rate was. Invariably it was via email and I would answer with a one-line sentence that really didn’t show the potentially new client the awsomeness they were getting. And that's when I created a rate card.

It was a game changer. This episode is what I did and how I make my rate card work for me and how you can too!

Are we who work within the interiors industry the hardest people in the world to buy for (after father-in-law's of course)? There's a good chance we are. Here's the reasons why...

  1. We get to see all the winter season products in July- months ahead of everyone else.
  2. We put together mammoth magazine Christmas gift lists - so we've been there, done that- usually numerous times by December
  3. We get given lovely gifts at press launches all the time - read notebooks and candles - the two things you should definitely NEVER buy a stylist or writer
  4. We're style-conscious, so picking something to our taste is a challenge - especially as there's a good chance we'll know where it's from.
  5. And in truth, if we really want something we'll go out an buy it.

So, what's the answer? I asked some interiors friends and this episode is their answer.

Interior stylists often book assistants to help out on shoots but when they turn up at the shoot location they often don't know how the boxes of props get there, what it takes to plan and organise a shoot or what happens once the shots are done.

These are questions we've been asked time and time again. Today's episode was recorded at a panel discussion event at the Lombok store on Tottenham Court Road in early December where four stylists explained exactly how it all works from shooting decorating shoots, real homes and makeovers to craft features and writing it all up again.

Special thanks goes out to Lombok for hosting a great event and to the panelists who shared their vast experience with the audience- Sara Bird, Dilly Orme and Maxine Brady

Want to know how to write a compelling head, sell or intro?

Do you know about cutting your copy?

Are you creating calls to action in every feature?

No? Then you need to listen to this episode. It's jam-packed full of fantastic advice on how to improve your writing whether you've been doing it for years or are just starting out.

Since recording this episode and signing up to Cate's Copy Academy I've learnt so much about writing. That's the funny thing about writing as an interior stylist- no-one ever teaches you how to do it. You just shoot a real home then write up the interview, but there is a better way and Cate shares that in this bumper value-packed episode.

And before you dismiss this podcast episode thinking "Oh, I've been in this game for years/decades, I know how to write" Let me just share that so have I and I have completely changed how I now write everything from features and Facebook posts to blogs and Instagram posts (not to mention these show notes too!) I'm improving every day and I'm loving it. I defy you not to learn something new in this one.

As the saying goes "What got you here, won't get you there" and that's doubly true for people who work on commercial and editorial features. The ability to adapt to styles, genres and even disciplines is what makes a good writer and stylist. You have to be able to switch in an instant and Ciara has definitely been adaptive. I’ve met many people whilst recording these podcast episodes- and in my career as an interior stylist and writer, but none are as incredibly imaginative and creative as the artist Rory Dobner. Known for his ink drawings of animals- like cats in bowler hats with monocles, after chatting with him I now have a much deeper understanding of how he works and brings his creatures to life.

Each animal has a story and a character of their own. From tutu wearing-dancing ants to cigarette smoking goldfish. Even the pet portraits he’s been commissioned to do become his version of their canine lives. Dog collars become gang necklaces, mouths have smirks and top hats look tattered - because the owners said how the pet loves to chew things. Rory builds on their character and takes it to another level.

Fundamentally the focus of Rory's art is to make people laugh and “make you daydream a bit’ and that’s exactly what it does. Talking to him for this podcast episode was truly inspirational and just made me want to dig out a fine-nibbed fountain pen and get drawing.

In this episode, I was lucky enough to grab a very patient David Motterhead during a Little Greene paint launch. What seemed like a good idea at the time turned into a bit of a nightmare with me accidentally pressing the mute button on the microphone and not recording 10 minutes of the first interview and David having to dash upstairs to chat to people who had come to the launch to hear all about the new green paint range - all the while the catering team for the launch were banging and crashing around us! To say David was patent with a rather inexperienced EmmaMT was an understatement.

All that aside - I had a whole load of questions lined up for David and he had so many great stories and behind the scenes facts about paints and how we use colour that I hardly asked any.
