James discusses President Biden's sudden departure, what this means for the Democratic Part, and what this means for former President Trump.
James discusses the limited information that we know about the suspect, Thomas Crooks (deceased) who tried to shoot President Trump with a rifle from a building as he was speaking at a rally in Butler, PA Saturday, July 13, 2024. President Biden has directed the Secret Service to review all security procedures following the shooting.
Is this a moment when the political temperature will be lowered, or will President Trump go back to his lies and grievances once he heals? We'll see.
In the second part of this conversation with Rob Schwartz, Rob discusses the possibility of writing his own book on his father, Morrie Schwartz. Morrie Schwartz is best known as the sociology professor from Brandeis University who became ill and later died from ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease, in 1995. Morrie is the subject of the 1997 best-selling memoir Tuesdays with Morrie, written by one of Morrie's former students, Mitch Albom. Rob says that should he decide to write a book, which he will decide later this year, he will use stories and interviews he has gathered that offer a different side of his father from both The Wisdom of Morrie which is his current book, and Tuesdays with Morrie. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/james-zipadelli6/message
In this Special Edition of the Accidental Anchor, I am pleased to welcome Rob Schwartz to our community. Below is a short biography of James Zipadelli and Rob Schwartz.James Zipadelli is the host and producer of the Accidental Anchor, who has never lost his curiosity or inquisitiveness. He was based as a journalist in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Washington, DC. Previous to that, James's primary expertise as a journalist was on health care, technology and social media. After James wrote a series on the Respite Care Program in Connecticut was in danger of being eliminated for Alzheimer's and dementia patients, Connecticut lawmakers found money to re-open the program. James has also interviewed many fascinating people, including in this conversation, Rob Schwartz. RobSchwartz isa writer, producer, and entrepreneur. His work has appeared in Time, Newsweek, Variety, The HollywoodReporter, and Melody Maker, among many others. He was ascript editor at NHK World TV in Japan for fourteen years and has been an AsiaCorrespondent for Billboard magazine since 2008. President Trump will be arraigned in Miami on June 13th (my birthday) in what is reportedly a 7 count indictment by the Justice Department. I have a special comment about that. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/james-zipadelli6/message
In this special comment, James discusses how the Democrats, on some issues, especially the debt limit, and Jan 6th prosecutions, are not showing the urgency that they should. First, how do you work with people on the GOP side that literally stood by while a mob wanted to murder the former Vice President, Mike Pence? Second, how do you work with people who (on January 5th) were planning in advance or who knew about what would happen on the 6th? People in power who face no consequences will be emboldened to question every election.
I know President Biden wants to work with Republicans in a bipartisan way. I get it. But the GOP of the Trump era is very different than 40 years ago. Trump is encouraging the GOP conference to allow default on his Truth Social page. After June 1, if the US defaults, the country will be in a recession and globally the US dollar will be weaker.
Senator Sanders had a point on the importance of health care being separate from someone's job; we lost a lot of jobs at the beginning of the pandemic. Although Congress helped out with the CARES Act and the American Rescue Plan, it should not take a once in a century pandemic to start treating the average person humanely.

Tucker is fired! So was Don Lemon at CNN! Is this a April Fool's Day joke? No, my friends, it is not. Tucker's last day was Friday, April 21st and apparently he was not told of his departure until 10 minutes before Fox released an on-air statement. So why would Fox can Carlson, who has the top rated show in all of cable? Did they can him because Fox News rededicated itself to high journalistic standards? Ha ha ha ha ha, I don't think so. My take: This is about money and heading off potential legal issues down the road. If there's one thing we learned from the Dominion Voting Systems settlement with Fox, it's that Fox Corp Chairman Rupert Murdoch doesn't like to lose money. They have lost a lot in the last few weeks, since Fox had to settle with Dominion for $787.5 million in a historic defamation case. Fox is looking down the road at two lawsuits from Fox News Producer Alyssa Rosenberg as well as their potential trial with voting systems company SmartMatic. SmartMatic is suing Fox and individual hosts for $2.7 billion.
Even though Tucker is fired, doesn't mean that his conspiracy theories haven't had an affect. Just to take two examples: Look at Russia's airing of Carlson's commentaries about the war in Ukraine, which Carlson characterized as a "border dispute" in March 2022; and Shasta County, CA, whose Board of Supervisors has decided to hand count their ballots in future elections (to the tune of $1.6 million). They have also terminated their contract with Dominion Voting Systems and spent $950,000 on another electronic voting system as well. How many other counties in America will do this? We don't know. https://www.washingtonpost.com/media/2022/02/23/tucker-carlson-putin-russia-ukraine/ and https://www.theguardian.com/media/2022/mar/14/kremlin-memos-russian-media-tucker-carlson-fox-news-mother-jones

While he credits the Justice Department for charging to this point, over 1000 people in the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, and 518 people have either pleaded guilty for their crimes or found guilty in trials, those who have power have so far escaped accountability.

In this episode, I have a special comment about two very different GOP Governors and how they are handling the coronavirus crisis in our area. First, Maryland's GOP Governor, Larry Hogan, is taking this coronavirus seriously and should be commended. He worked with his wife, who speaks Korean, and secured enough test kits for up to 500,000 tests for the state's needs -- and they got them from South Korea -- not from our government. Good job, Governor Hogan! That's an example of responsible leadership.
On the other hand, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is not taking coronavirus seriously. Although the state of Georgia is under a stay at home order until April 30th, he had the bright idea to open up restaurants, massage therapists, and amusement parks by April 27th. He says the businesses will rigorously enforce social distancing guidelines. Yeah, right. When you do someone's hair you are standing right over them... cutting their hair. Yet bars and nightclubs will remain closed. He says that the Georgia National Guard will help with testing up to 1,500 people per day. I'm grateful for their service but that makes no sense either. He doesn't know how much testing is needed for the state and what's there is woefully inadequate. But the best part? He wants to open houses of worship back up. That's right, he wants people to congregate in church. Which would be great, except people over 65 which can get sick from the virus and die, also go to church too. For these reasons, Gov. Kemp is drawing the wrong lessons from the coronavirus pandemic.

I'm glad Paul was tested, but the AP notes that Paul was asymptomatic and tested "out of an abundance of caution" due to his travel schedule. Americans are told to stay home unless they have clear symptoms of cov-19 and testing shortages. But apparently Paul was able to secure a test fairly quickly.
