A Discussion with Two Candidates for Student Body President

Part of being a sixth grader at Seven Arrows Elementary is leadership. Since we have no middle or upper school, sixth graders are the most senior of the lot. Accordingly, we expect them to step up to the plate in a multitude of ways. Members of the sixth grade class are asked to drive community service efforts on behalf of various social justice causes, lead weekly assemblies as official emcees, and communicate with administration on behalf of the student body. The latter of these commitments entails an annual election for student body president. This position is only open to the sixth grade, but all members of the school are able to cast a vote. The entire process is incredibly fun and exciting for all parties. Candidates get a chance to make flyers, talk to students about campaign initiatives, and present a speech in front of the entire school. Once everyone in our community has an opportunity to hear from the various candidates, students make their selection. On today’s episode, the student producer of the podcast sits down with two of the eight presidential candidates to hear their pitches and promises. The sixth grade candidates talk about what it means to run for president, and moreover, what they plan to accomplish if they are successful in the election. Finally, the students discuss the purpose of student council, and why it’s such an essential part of SAE for both students and teachers alike. Check out this fascinating episode to get an inside glimpse of the election process.
