Colonel Abdul Fatah runs Kabul's busiest passport office. And he has earned a reputation—and many certificates from leaders and organizations—because he was overheard declaring to his employees that he would not tolerate corruption. But for him, it's not about awards, it's about properly getting the job done. He couldn't run his office efficiently with corruption, and his office is quite efficient-- turning out 250-300 passports a day. The Afghan postal service was established in 1870 and, had developed, by 1970, into a modern service that allowed Afghans to send letters around the world. But years of war, followed by the Taliban regime, have set the postal service back in time. A building boom since 2001 across the country has added to the service’s problems. In Kabul, the city’s population has grown in size by nearly five times since 2001, and the city still lacks any system of street naming or numbering. We follow postman Walid on his rounds, while back at the main sorting office, the service’s operations manager offers a perspective on the history of the mail service in Afghanistan, war, stamps and diplomacy. Monsoon rains have swept away a bridge near the mountainous Khost-Gardez pass in Paktia province, Afghanistan. The road has also been badly damaged, leaving the Salerno bowl and both Afghan and ISAF bases cut off. Redeployment activities from Forward Operating Base Salerno have already been disrupted and local people are struggling to cross the riverbed. A team of combat engineers from Kandahar are called to drive through the night to get to the scene of the disaster – they will need the protection of members of the US Army’s 101st mountains. Imagine seeing a suspected suicide bomb car approaching. What are your options? Signal, shoot, flee? Now there’s a new option. A technology is being tested at a secret location in Norway that can make a car’s engine cut out using high-intensity jammers. Better still, it can also take out drones, jet skis, and any other vehicle used to deliver bombs. And it has also positively tested disrupting remote control-activated bombs – even chemical and biological ones. The NATO-led combat mission in Afghanistan will end in 2014. Nations have started the redeployment of their equipment. The British Army started the redeployment process in October 2012. Expensive and sensitive pieces of equipment, such as helicopters and vehicles, are sent by air to an air base in the United Arab Emirates and then shipped by sea to the military port of Marchwood in Southampton. As Afghan pilot instructors graduate from Shindand air base in western Afghanistan and Afghan-only flight crews embark on active missions across the nation, the Afghan air force is once again developing into an important part of the Afghan security forces. In the early 1980s Afghanistan had a strong and capable air force. But in the civil war all that changed. The Applied Physics Science and Technology Centre (APSTEC) in St. Petersburg, Russia has been working with NATO to develop a technology to detect explosives concealed on suicide bombers in mass transport locations. In 2006, the NATO-Russia Council nations launched a counter-narcotics training project. The aim: to improve the skills of counter-narcotics officers from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Central Asia. Last June, the stand-off detection of explosives (STANDEX) project, which is being developed in the NATO-Russia cooperation framework, was tested in the underground railway of a European capital. Afghan medics are now treating their injured soldiers and police in a newly built trauma center, a first for the country, based in Helmand in the country’s south. In the past, any Afghan security forces wounded on the battlefield were taken to ISAF’s hospital at Camp Bastion but now, local medics at the field hospital for the 215 Corps, are treating their own.
It’s been five years since Poland first sent troops to Ghazni. Here the 10th Armoured Cavalry Brigade take over from the 25th Air Cavalry Brigade in the same week as the Polish side of the joint Provincial Reconstruction Team closes. Apart from improving combat capability and instilling confidence in the Afghan National Security Forces, Polish-funded projects have also developed areas of the province.

In November 2013, fourteen selected Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operators, commanders and staff officers from the Iraqi Armed Forces started a series of basic and specialised “Train the Trainers” course to learn new techniques to counter the threat of improvised explosive devices. The aim of the course was to teach the Iraqi experts to recognize, visually identify and defeat improvised explosive devices and their components.
In 2001, after the fall of the Taliban, there was little in the way of a functional police force in Afghanistan. Instead armed militias carried out their own brand of justice. NATO Channel visits the surgery of Dr Mohammad Shirzad who is a doctor offering alternative treatment for skin diseases like vitiligo and epilepsy in Parwan, Afghanistan. The doctor who claims thousands of satisfied patients, uses the venom which he extracts from scorpions and snakes in his medicines. The doctor and his family have been working as alternative medical practitioners for over 215 years, despite their lack of formal medical training.
