This topic is back by popular demand. And it makes sense because when you create a film and post it to Youtube, you want people to watch it! But Independent filmmakers didn't get into filmmaking to write copy so it's not second nature.
This Episode 88 is Part 1 on how to write an effective YouTube description to maximise its potential to be discovered and watched. Part 2 next week will discuss how you can market, network and promote your Youtube video to make sure it gets shared, liked and drives engagement.
These two parts together, the description along with the marketing and networking, are how you're going to get your video out into the world and help you succeed in getting lots of happy eyeballs watching your content.
I try to always talk about things that I have done myself or that my team have done so that I can speak with genuine experience on the topics. I worry that there are a lot of folks out there telling filmmakers how to do things but they haven’t done the hard yards or tried out the systems they’re promoting themselves. They’re just regurgitating what others have said works for them.
So what I talk about in this episode is all based on the experience I've had posting content to YouTube since 2010.

This week I'm talking all about consistency and debating if it's really that important to being a successful filmmaker? If you're like me then consistency isn't your strength, which feels problematic considering so many thought leaders tout that consistency is the key to success. So what are the benefits of embracing consistency, creativity, innovation, and the power of diverse perspectives?
If you're interested in making movies that matter, building a sustainable career, and positively impacting your audiences, this episode is for you. Because I have a counterargument for why being consistently inconsistent can work just as well.

In this episode, Sue dives deep into a topic that not typically covered in film school - the business of filmmaking. 🎥💼
Here are three key takeaways from this episode:
1️⃣ The Craft vs. The Business: While film school teaches us a lot about the art and technique of filmmaking, it often doesn't teach us about the essential business aspects. Producing work in the film industry involves much more than just the craft of making the film. But don't be discouraged! If you aspire to be your own boss and create your own work, you're in the right place to learn the business side of the industry.
2️⃣ Building a Sustainable Career: If you want to earn a living and have a long-lasting career in filmmaking, it's important to create and initiate your own projects. While specializing in a specific area and working solely on other people's productions might be an option, it may not provide the financial stability and creative fulfillment you desire. This episode explores how to make filmmaking a sustainable career by creating meaningful work that resonates with audiences.
3️⃣ The Power of Consistency: Consistency is key in many pursuits, including filmmaking. However, it can be a challenge to maintain consistency while nurturing your creative abilities. Sue's sharing some thoughts on this and more.
If you want to dive deeper into the topics discussed on the show, make sure to sign up for our weekly drop of Moonshine via email at moonshinecommunicationsacademy.com. 💌

In this episode, Host Sue Collins does a dive deep into the world of impact filmmaking and how to make movies that truly matter. If you're someone who is passionate about creating meaningful work and making a positive impact on your audience, then this episode is definitely for you.
One of the key takeaways from this episode is the importance of exploring topics through documentary filmmaking. It is a truly rewarding experience that allows you to meet amazing people and go to places you never thought you would have the opportunity to visit.
Another takeaway from this episode is the value of developing strong interviewing skills. Whether you're interviewing talent for a film, podcast, or even your own boss for an article, having excellent interviewing skills is crucial.
Lastly, Sue discusses the importance of sharing accurate information and combating false messages. In today's age of social media, it is more important than ever to provide people with the facts so they can make informed decisions. Making impact films allows us to share meaningful ideas and information through narrative storytelling. By interviewing experts and capturing personal stories, we can provide our audience with enough facts to make up their own minds and not just be influenced by what they see on social media.
Overall, this episode is packed with valuable insights and practical advice for anyone interested in impact filmmaking. Whether you're just starting out or have been in the industry for years, there is something for everyone in this episode. So grab your headphones, tune in, and get ready to learn how to make movies that truly make a difference.

Using a case study of a documentary called "Conquering Cancer," Sue encourages listeners to think beyond just creating a film and moving on to the next project. This Moonshine Moonshot episode is a fusion. Part nuts and bolts on music composition, music licensing, and the pros and cons of both in filmmaking. Discussing whether you should hire a composer or license the music. Do you need a music supervisor? Can you do both?

I thought it would be good to do a refresher on 'What is an impact film? ' And why you might want to make one. It’s good timing to do this little refresh as we’ve been deep diving into all things documentary film production the past few months and we’re working our way to post-production.
Later in the episode, I’m going to walk you through the difference between distribution and outreach.
For impact films this is a pivotal time to understand what you’re hoping to achieve when it comes to distribution and outreach. You still have time to shape these plans before you get into post-production and it’s best to have this in play before you really get into the edit.
So don't wait, hit play and learn more and make your filmmaking brain bigger!

When you're making a documentary film it is important that you get consent from the participants who appear in your film, or you might find yourself in quite a pickle.
I know, sometimes it can be a little unclear as to when and who you need to get consent from. Luckily, in this episode of Moonshine Moonshot I'm going to break down everything you need to know about consent, AKA: how to get permission to use the footage you capture!
Consent forms are sometimes called Talent Release forms or Participant Release forms or Participant consent forms. Basically, its a legal document that specifies the terms they are agreeing to, to appear in the film you're producing.
So when you're ready, jump into today's podcast and start making movies!

Hey there filmmakers! In this episode, I'm sharing with you the 3 types of documentary storytellers you can use and how to choose the right one for your project.
The storyteller in a documentary is like a guide, they take the audience on the journey. In some cases, a narrator will provide context and commentary. While in others, the storyteller may be a presenter who appears on screen to share key information and guide the audience through. Or, you can go in neither direction! And instead, use a protagonist.
So, which one will you use? Or will you be the presenter? I'm going to walk you through all the options.
It's so good to be talking about a creative decision in this week's episode. There's been so much on the business of filmmaking lately due to the pre-production topics I've covered.

As you would expect, production is a huggggge topic and I wouldn’t dare anyone to try and cover it in one single video! So today, we’ll be looking at the five key ingredients that every production needs.
Well. Six, kinda.
These ingredients are interviews, b-roll, observational footage, archival footage, specialist shots, and animation. But how exactly do they play into your documentary?
Production is a massive part of the filmmaking journey. Luckily, we plan to be here with you the whole way.

It’s at this point in the process I find it best to come back to one simple question: ‘Why am I making this documentary?’
Really think about it. What was the idea that lit a flame in your mind that just couldn’t be put out? And why did you decide that a documentary was the way this story needed to be told?
This week, we’re going to take the time to pull our heads out of the thorough and deep planning we’ve been doing and instead reflect and look at the BIG picture.

Welcome back filmmakers! it's now time for you to start thinking outside of your film... I’m not trying to be deep or metaphorical here!
Your documentary is the centerpiece of a network of different materials that all compliment each other, and one element of this network is the website.
And yes! You do need to start thinking about your website in pre-production. You can never be too careful when it comes to website development. Maybe it will take weeks or maybe it will take months. But it will definitely be a gamble.

If you're planning on whipping up a documentary soon, hopefully, the next bit you read won’t rock your world too much: you need to know how to use your equipment!
Your camera is your best friend. If it wasn’t for your camera - the likelihood of your film coming to fruition, is pretty slim. But like any friendship, you’ve got to nurture it. That means, getting to know it as deeply as you can.
Knowing your tech simply means less obstacles and more creative possibilities. Which is exactly why pre-production is the perfect phase to try and learn what every button on that camera does.

You’ve come a long way since we started this journey, but now it’s getting very real - it is time to start working out exactly where you will be filming.
Naturally, preparation is key! The more you understand the locations you are shooting in, the less obstacles you’ll have to overcome on the day.
Okay, when I read that back that seems a fairy obvious step in the filmmaking process and one that doesn’t need to explained. But there is more to it than it may seem. Location scouting is an incredibly important step in not just finding a place that looks perfect, but will also function well when creating a documentary.

Welcome back fellow filmmakers, and hello to any new aspiring creators who are just starting on this exciting journey.
Making movies is really fun and rewarding, but to make sure you have a safe space to work in there is one very important topic we have to discuss… Insurance!
Don’t click away!!
Trust me, I get it. The word sends a shiver down our spines and makes the hairs on the back of our neck stand up. But, it is a vital part of the filmmaking.
It can very tempting to cut corners when it comes to insurance, especially when the likelihood of something going wrong seems slim. But, as the old saying goes: Better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.

Creating a documentary can be daunting process. But if you are tenacious, each week, you’ll get closer to seeing your ideas become a reality.
To continue forward, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of pre-production. Which means working out exactly who is going to be working on your masterpiece.
A production team is made up from a broad range of roles. From pre production to post, it’s best to know exactly who you're hiring to avoid any unwanted surprises down the line

As we enter this new year, take pride in how far you’ve come along and your persistence through the pre-production process. If everything falls into place in 2023, who knows, maybe this year is finally the year you see your film on the big screen.
If you’ve been following our documentary series, you are well into your films pre-production and are ready to move forward to the next stage.
Hopefully, as you were conceiving your film, developing your pitch and considering the final product, you would have been thinking carefully about graphics and its overall look. But not just within the documentary itself, but the film as a brand.
It’s important to approach your graphics with an overall approach, as your graphic’s are in, out and around your film. Especially in documentary. You will need to consider not only your title card, but lower-third text for names and locations, trailer titles, logos and poster design.

Welcome back fellow filmmakers! We’ve come along way but we still have some important work to do before we enter production. So, without further ado let’s get into the nitty gritty details that are going to make your documentary happen.
The next vital step in your journey is scheduling. Yes, your read correctly: scheduling.
Now, if you have all the time in the world, unlimited resources and all your subjects on standby, you may not need to worry about this next step. But in the likely scenario that this is not the case, I’ve put together the perfect cheat sheet to get you into pre-production asap.
When you’re juggling clients, crew and deadlines, it may seem a weight off to throw caution to the wind and not create a detailed schedule. But I implore you to read on with curious optimism, as a schedule may be all that stands between you and a film ending disaster.
Being a creative, you would be forgiven for thinking this part of the process is slightly mind numbing. But stick with me! By creating the perfect schedule not only will your production be a logical and organised one, it will also construct the perfect environment for you creatively thrive and produce the best documentary you possibly could.

One of the first lessons I was ever taught as an early-career filmmaker was this: never use another artist’s work without seeking the proper approvals first. This goes for everything from stock imagery, to YouTube footage, archival material, animation, art, music – even a capella renditions of famous songs!
In fact, many moons ago Mike and I were filming with a participant for one of our documentaries when the participant burst into a version of Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver. It was poignant and touching and, thankfully, we caught it on camera. We knew before we even watched the footage back that it would end up in the film.
After the interview, we started thinking – maybe we could licence the original song and include that in the film as well. So we investigated …and thank goodness we did! It turns out we’d actually have to pay a license fee to use the participant’s take on the song too.
Phew – close one!
Why am I telling you this story?
Because if we had bypassed that step and distributed the film without all the correct legal permissions, we could’ve been facing some serious copyright infringement penalties. We might even have had to can the documentary entirely. Yep – you read that correctly. All that work disintegrated over a little legal loophole … can you imagine!
The thing is, many filmmakers spend months, even years, mapping out shoots, conducting interviews and piecing their documentary together. But they don’t know the ins and outs of the legal aspects of their production.
Which is why I thought it was time to talk about it on the Moonshine Moonshot series. The last thing I want is for you to make an awesome moving picture, only to find out right at the end that you can’t distribute it because you didn’t secure the necessary rights and permissions.
So let’s find out how to protect yourself and your film from any copyright infringement.

In this episode of Moonshine Moonshot, I dig into the pre-production phase of documentary filmmaking.
If you're about to start pre-production, you're pretty clear on your documentary idea and finally edging closer and closer to actually making your film.
During pre production, you’ll map out the flow of your film, lock in your on screen talent, scout locations, finalise your budget, think about the type of equipment you’ll need and build a comprehensive shooting schedule.
Essentially, you’ll do all the stuff that needs to be ticked off before you get your gear out.
I know it sounds like a whole lot of planning and not so much doing – but I promise this part of the documentary making journey can be creative and visual. And if you cast your mind way back to part 2 of the How to make a documentary series, you’ll remember that I showed you how fun and rewarding planning can be.
If you’ve got a solid plan in place already then we're confident that you’ll find pre-production a total breeze.

This week, I show you how to create a pitch video and sell your film to potential funders.
If you’re an aspiring documentary filmmaker with an important story to share, there’s one thing you need to get straight how to pitch your film to potential funders.
Ah yes, the dreaded ‘p” word. If you’ve been keeping across the How to make a documentary series, I'm sure you knew this one was coming up.
Last week, I looked closely at crafting a compelling proposal. And the week before that I zoned in on pre-interviews, which are often used as part of pitching your film idea. Now the time has come to really dig into it.
The thought of pitching leaves most filmmakers with an icky pang in the pit of their stomachs. Maybe it’s because it implies a certain level of salesmanship and we’re “creatives”. Maybe it’s because the idea of “pitching” and what it means is still a bit blurry or perhaps it’s because pitching can be connected to public speaking and public speaking is rated as a greater fear than death.
Maybe your worried about all of the above. And quite possibly it’s also because your film really matters to you and you want to get the green light to make it. So the answer to your pitch is very important to you. No one wants to get a no. Not from a potential funder.
But, if you want to make a film – a really, really good film – you do need to learn to embrace the concept of pitching and raise some finance.
Pitches put you front and centre with decision makers who can finance and champion your film. In short: if you want to bring your vision to life, you need to master the process.
Listen now and I'll show you how!

Filmmaking is a time consuming endeavour. While it might take someone less than 90 minutes to consume and fall in love with your film, it takes you and your team countless hours, many sleepless nights and endless shots of espresso to pull it all together.
From storyboarding your narrative to perfecting your script, securing talent and selecting locations and lets not to forget the actual filming and editing part! – let’s face it, a lot of blood, sweat and tears goes into making a movie.
However there is one part of the filmmaking process that can feel like it takes an eternity to create and get right. And it actually has very little to do with the overall look of your documentary feature film…but oh boy, can it make or break your production!
I’m talking about your proposal. AKA your ticket to funding your project. Because while documentary filmmaking will give you a great sense of accomplishment it also carries more than a few challenges. And writing a great proposal is one of them. A great proposal is directly related to the single biggest factor in determining if your film will be made. Finance!
And securing enough finance or funding to make what you envisioned in your mind is probably one of the biggest challenges a filmmaker faces.
Which is why in this episode I wanted to take a close look at crafting a proposal that’s so convincing, it’ll have potential funders begging to get behind you and your documentary. Writing proposals is something I do regularly and I’ve learned a lot of tips and tricks that help to get the structure and tone right. What to include and what to leave out. And sometimes it’s what you leave out that makes it more successful!

This episode is all about pre interviews – Mike and Sue break down what they are, how to conduct one and why they think they’re so helpful for developing your documentary film.
A pre-interview is an essential step towards crafting a well-told, engaging film story. And it’s exactly what it sounds like, it’s an interview you do with someone before you ‘officially’ interview them. They’re beneficial because it allows you to familiarise yourself with the interviewee’s story – and it also helps them become more comfortable with you (and your crew if you invite them along). Which will will make for a far better interview when it’s time to roll camera for your actual film.
In part 6 of the 'How to make a documentary' series, you'll learn how to conduct an amazing pre-interview.

Hello listeners! This week I'm sharing an overview of the 'How to develop your documentary or narrative film series' – why I made it, how it will help you and your filmmaking and what topics I'll be covering over the next several weeks (and months!).
I recognise that learning how to craft films is a challenging process. When I was just starting out it was really hard to find information and learn about filmmaking without formal study or without being under the wing of a mentor. Avoiding the pitfalls, being pigeon holed, running out of funding or simply not understanding the business side of the Industry has meant that over the years I've seen many people, with a lot of talent, give up or simply move onto more stable work.
My hope is to see the industry thrive in Australia and beyond and I recognise that to do that, I have to be more open with skills sharing.
So I've decided to share more of what I've learned through many years of filmmaking through the Moonshine Moonshot series and with online courses at the Moonshine Communications Academy.
So just like your high school teacher or uni lecturer would provide you with a syllabus at the start of each term or semester, I'm sharing everything that's coming up in the 'How to develop your documentary or narrative film series'.

This questions is a big one! How to stay creatively motivated as a filmmaker? You’re no doubt hoping for a magic answer, a simple technique that would pull you thought and keep you feeling on top of it all. Because when filmmaking gets tough, when you feel like it’s a grind and you’re getting nowhere. It’s had to stay motivated and you need a way to get through.
There are definitely times in filmmaking, or any pursuit really, where it feels impossible, thankless or just crushing.
There have have been occasions where I find myself daydreaming about abandoning the camera, ripping up my storyboards and going to work on a cruise ship in the Caribbean.
And why don’t I? Well, I also have this unrelenting urge to produce movies that make a difference. So deep down, I know I will stick with the filmmaking thing. But that passion alone is not enough to keep me motivated.
So what is motivation. Is it something you ‘have’ or is it something you ‘find’? If you think motivation is something you should just have then you might find the info I’m going to share with you helpful because some small shifts in your expectations could really make a difference when you're trying to stay on track.
In filmmaking there are certainly a a bunch of roadblocks that can regularly bring me down – securing the right funder, having time to get everything done, battling the challenging distribution process … On and on it goes.
It can be incredibly frustrating and the amount of work involved in filmmaking that’s not about creative outputs can be tedious. And that’s where motivation can wane (hence the daydreaming).
Which is why I wanted to use part 4 of the How to develop your documentary or narrative film series to dissect how filmmakers find the motivation to do what they do when the going gets tough.
Because no doubt you’ll get struck down by a lack of motivation at some point in your filmmaking career. Maybe your camera guy bails on you. Or a key talent pulls out at the last minute. Perhaps you just received more feedback than expected on your latest script.
While it can be crushing, I promise, it’s just part of journey – and you will get through it. You just need to have a few techniques to turn to when things are getting you down.
If you’re suddenly thinking to yourself, Part 4! What? I’ve wandered in halfway through a series and I have no clue what’s going on’ – don’t fret. You can catch up on parts 1,2 and 3 via the below links.

How to develop your documentary series part 2 - Planning

This week, I'm running you through how to conquer Imposter Syndrome – so that it doesn’t take hold and paralyse you during the filmmaking process.
This is part 3 in the Moonshine Moonshot mini series, which will help you develop your documentary and take it from an idea to a ready-for-release motion picture.
If doubt sets in every time you start a new project, you don't want to miss this episode. I'm going to show you how to rid yourself of those awful, anxiety-inducing questions like: “Do I have the knowledge to pull this off? Is this idea actually worthy of making a film about? Will people be interested enough to go see it?”
These thoughts are unhelpful and downright disruptive. But loads of filmmakers and creatives feel this way – at least at some point in their career.
If you’re serious about making a film, you need to be armed with the right tools to ensure you actually finish that film, see it on the big screen (or wherever you intend to publish it) and generate the impact you’re hoping for.
So let's kick Imposter Syndrome to the curb.

Hello fellow filmmakers and creatives! Welcome back to my mini series on the documentary development process. I’m putting this together to help demystify what is involved in developing your documentary or narrative film idea from just an idea into a project ready to pitch for funding.
I kicked off last week with a deep dive into getting clear on your story – ie figuring out your genre, defining your idea and immersing yourself in your story’s world. If you missed it, you can catch up by clicking here. You can also watch the episode of Moonshine Moonshot on YouTube. My co-host Mike Hill and I are releasing a companion video series over the next several weeks, where we’ll walk you through how to take your movie idea from concept to the silver screen. Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss any tips.
But back to this week. Because in this podcast, I’m turning my focus to (gulp) …planning. Now, I know that will sound about as exciting as ‘tax time’ for many of you, But stick with me!There are huge benefits to planning and it can actually be…fun? Ok, maybe fun isn’t the right word. However, it’s definitely satisfying and it’s something I’m really into.
And before you come at me with your, “Planning inhibits my creative process.” Or “I just find the notion of planning way too constrictive” , hear me out. If you skip the planning step, there’s a really solid chance you won’t actually complete your film…ever! No raving fans. No packed cinemas. No good, right?
Exactly. Which is why planning is such a critical step in the filmmaking journey. Because as Benjamin Franklin said way back in the 1700s:
“By failing to plan, you are preparing to fail”
So with those words of wisdom in mind, start listening now.

So you’ve got a brilliant idea for your next (or perhaps it’s your first) documentary. Now it’s time to get to work. But how on earth do you take a concept that exists in your mind and craft it into a living, breathing film?
Taking a project from idea to completion is no mean feat. And if you haven’t been to film school or attached yourself to a great mentor then its a process that can be hard to learn without doing. And in that doing, there will be many times where you have to guess, ask Google it, or just trial and error. So to help you along on the journey, over the coming months I’ll be sharing with you all aspects of the documentary film making process.
I know how challenging this process can be, and disappointingly, Mike and I have seen many people with a lot of talent, give up or simply move onto more stable work. So we’ve decided to share more of what we’ve learned through many years of film making through the Moonshine Moonshot series.
Our hope is to see the industry thrive here in Australia and beyond and we recognise that to do that, we have to be more open with skills sharing. We have to discourage pigeoning holing filmmakers into categories. Maybe you’ve been a director, does that really mean you can’t be a producer or write your own scripts? Perhaps you’ve worked in feature drama, does that really mean you can’t work in comedy or documentary.
And this little rant has lead us to create this upcoming series of how to develop your documentary film. Which will be followed by pre production, production, post production, distribution and outreach. It’s probably going to take us all year so make sure you subscribe to the podcast so you don't miss a step. So click the 'Follow' button on the app you're listening on!
And the first topic is how you get to know the story you want to tell?

Are you considering making a documentary? Do you already have a story in mind? When you’re deeply passionate about a topic or cause, documentary films are a fantastic way to share the story and have others discover or learn about it as well.
Once you’ve crafted your work and put it out into the world, documentaries have the power to shift hearts and minds. I’m sure you can already imagine the buzz as the lights come up and you see your audience enthralled and inspired, clapping with admiration and a new passion for the content of your film. It’s the end goal many, if not all, filmmakers strive for, including myself.
In this episode, I’m going to share some of the ways you might go about funding your documentary projects – such as crowdfunding or sponsorship– to keep your spirits up and show you what’s possible.
And I’m also going to cover the 3 key questions I get asked from potential funders when I approach them about supporting my work, so you know how to prepare ahead of any meetings with would-be funders.
Let's get into it.

Hello, fellow impact filmmakers. In this epidose, I’m discussing something I know you will be interested in. And how do I know that? Because almost every conversation I have with an emerging – or even established – filmmaker leads to the same question: How do you distribute your impact film or documentary?
The thing is, there’s no one clear-cut answer that I can give. Because in 2022 there are endless ways to distribute your film and the landscape feels as if it is constantly changing too.
The way my team and I released films 15 years ago is quite different from how we do it now. Long gone are the days when engaging a distributor was the key to getting your film out into the world.
And many filmmakers do still think they’ll create the work and attach a distributor, so they don’t put a lot of thought into how they’ll find an audience and how their film will go out into the world. A distributor is responsible for that right? Yes, and no.
If you can attach a distributor, and that is not a sure thing. Then yes, their job is to put your film out to the world. But how they do that, how much priority they give your film in their catalogue and how much they will commit to marketing your work. That’s a big unknown, no matter how good your contract looks to be. Things change. And you really need to be clear on your numbers when you do your contracting or you can find that any returns due to you can be swallowed up in ‘marketing costs’ on the distributers side. Leaving you with very little.
What sort of distribution are you considering? A theatrical release? Video on demand? YouTube or broadcast television? Maybe it’s a combination.
Once you set a path next step is working out who will help you distribute your film. Will you do this yourself, or are you considering working with an outreach producer or putting a team together?? And how do you go about building an audience to put your film in front of? That’s a whole other layer you should really give some thought to as well.
If your head is spinning, don’t panic. I’m covering all things related to distributing a documentary or factual project or an impact film in this episode. Mike and I zoned in on the topic in the latest episode of Moonshine Moonshot too. So if you’d prefer to watch, click here

Hope-based messaging? What is it and why is it useful for impact filmmaking and communications in general really? It’s the way I communicate for all of the projects I produce and it’s defiantly worth putting some thought to as you develop your own work.
So my first hope-based message for you is that I hope you’re having a really great day, that you’re listening as you walk in the sunshine or driving to and from a really productive meeting or perhaps enjoying a day off. I know hard you work, being in a creative industry or as a solo creative is a lot of work, it’s certainly not easy getting new ideas realised and projects funded.
And I’m guessing that’s why you’re listening because you’re keen to develop more of your craft including how to communicate your ideas because this is really important when your looking for funding, it affects how you produce your work and it’s critical for landing on the mark with your intended audience.
And at the end of the day that's what it’s all about, isn’t it. Getting your work seen and making an impact on your audience.

Ah, The Call-To-Action. Or the ‘CTA’ as those in the know refer to it. It’s quite possibly one of my favourite parts of the video-making process. Namely, because it’s where I ask my audience to get involved and be part of the story.
When I began producing impact films over a decade ago, I wasn’t familiar with using a CTA. It wasn’t as common. Passively viewing entertainment was the absolute norm. So I really had to think about what would be effective when asking the audience to do something. Audiences weren’t used to being asked to do something.
And, how effective your call-to-action is can honestly make or break your video. I know that sounds a tad dramatic but it really is true. Especially if you’re in the business of making impact films.. If I didn’t include a call-to-action at the end of my videos –long, short or micro – I’d probably be quietly banging my head against a wall right now, wondering why on earth my film didn’t drive the action I’d expected it to.
The thing is, it doesn't matter how great your video is. Even if you have an incredible storyline. Amazing on-screen talent. Beautiful cinematography. A title so catchy it becomes part of the everyday lexicon. Because all of that won’t matter if your audience gets to the end credits and simply thinks, ‘Gee, that was an excellent film. What’s for dinner?’’
So, if you want your audience to do more than watch, you need to tell them to do something. It might seem obvious to you what folks should do once they see your film but you’d be surprised by how direct, tactful and persuasive you have to be to make sure they actually follow through and do the thing you’ve asked them to do.
In this episode, I’m taking a close look at the call-to-action. I’m going to unpack what it is, why you need one, and how to craft one that will get your audience to do whatever it is you want them to do.
Listen now! (Yes, that was a call-to-action I just dropped in, sneaky ha!).

Can screen testing help you craft a better video story?
A screen test is kind of like a job interview for actors. But if you’re making documentary or a factual project, and you don’t have actors, why would you need to do a screen test? Today I’m going to share with you why it’s still going to be a very useful tool for you in your pre production.
Welcome to this weeks episode of Moonshine Moonshot, I’m your host Sue Collins and this is where I share with you all the things I’ve learned making content for the past 15 years or more. I am also excited to let you know that the Moonshine Communications Academy is now open for enrolments so if you want to dive deeper into what I’m sharing with you, then that is the place to do it.
But back to todays episode, - screen tests!
I’m a huge advocate for screen testing your proposed talent as soon as it’s possible but definitely during the pre production phase. I know it might sound like “extra work” but I promise, it can go a long way in helping you cast the right people in your film or video. And by the right people, I mean those who are not only meaningfully tied to your video’s topic, but those who can also relate to and engage your ideal audience.
Let's dive into the episode.

If you’ve ever sat in a boardroom with your colleagues to “brainstorm” a new project, video or campaign, you’ll know how tedious and tiresome coming up with ideas can be. I’m not sure what it is about the word “brainstorming”. But as soon as someone mentions it – POOF. Suddenly every creative thought you’ve ever had vanishes. Your mind goes totally blank and all you can think about is what you packed for lunch.
I hear this all the time. I think being told to suddenly ‘get creative’ puts you under a lot of pressure.
Over the past few years, “brainstorming” has quickly evolved into “ideation”, which in my opinion, is really just a fancy way of saying “coming up with ideas”. When Mike and I were filming a recent episode of Moonshine Moonshot related to this very topic, our trusty voice over guy defined “ideation” as: The formation of ideas or concepts.
There you go! It is just a fancy way of saying “coming up with ideas”. I’m not sure what it is about us communications folk – but sometimes we like to overcomplicate the simplest of things.
Not to say that coming up with ideas is simple. It never is. But it also doesn’t have to be quite as as laborious or ho-hum as sitting in a windowless meetings room with a white board and a few pastries to keep you focused.
In this post, I’m sharing some of the ways my team and I come up with ideas for our impact films, feature documentaries and other speciality projects over at Moonshine Agency.
To give you a heads up on what you’re in for, I’ll be covering:
• Research (don’t roll your eyes – I promise it can be really fun and interesting)
• Location research (now I bet that lit your eyes up)
• Pre-interviews with experts in your subject area

Sometimes there are movies that get under your skin for all the right reasons. Either the storyline is so gripping that it stays with you for days after. Or there are lines in the script that you find you go over and over again in your mind.
And then there are the other movies. The ones that definitely leave an impression …but in all the wrong ways. Learning how to analyse films good and bad, is one of the best ways to develop your own craft.
Was it bad because the acting was wooden. Did plot have more holes than Swiss cheese. You felt mislead by the genre and the actors don’t seem to suit their roles. You lost interest quickly?
To be fair, not too many movies make me feel this way. As a filmmaker, I always try to see the positives. I know how much effort and energy goes into making a motion picture and if the one I choose to zone out to on a Friday night doesn’t do it for me, it doesn’t mean that the film is bad. It’s just not the film for me.
But as a filmmaker it’s also really important to analyse the films you watch. What worked, what didn’t and why? You can learn so much from watching films that you can then apply to your own work.
Even Quentin Tarantino says “I steal from every movie ever made.”
Sometimes it’s very easy to pick apart a film and I think picking apart the bad ones is often much easier than figuring out what worked with the great ones. But if you want to make movies, then it’s worth getting analytical with the films you watch. Learn learn learn.
This will also help you understand who the audience is for your own projects as well. If you’re looking to get a project off the ground, one of the first things any potential funder will ask you, whether you’re making a documentary or a major motion picture, is “who’s going to watch this film, who is the audience?”
Paramount, Netflix, Amazon. They will know who a film is for well before they green light production. They have to know who the intended audience is. It then feeds into their choice of suitable actors, locations, wardrobe choices, everything! Everything relates to who the audience is that’s going to pay for a ticket (or subscription). If huge studios just made a film and hoped people liked it, they would not be in business.
Don’t be fooled by the bright lights and the idea that film making is all Art. It’s a business like any other and films are the product. I’m not trying to diminish the incredible creativity and talent that goes into making a film. I’m just pointing out that the big players always start with ‘Who is the audience for this story?’.
And this leads me to the experience I had recently when I watched House of Gucci.
I have a lot of feelings about this film. Considering the biographical crime drama film was directed by the legendary Ridley Scott, I’ve decided there’s no shame in letting rip either.
So here goes.
This is my honest review of the film inspired by the family behind the Italian fashion empire and why I think it unfolds like a lesson on how not to make a movie in 2022.
Listen now.
Are you neglecting part of your audience without even realising it? If you’re about to produce a video, this episode couldn't have come sooner. I'm about to walk you through how to include some easily overlooked tactics that can make your video more accessible.
Voila, your audience just got bigger in all the right ways.
From Instagram reels, to TikTok clips, YouTube series and Netflix produced feature films, there’s no denying that video content is everywhere these days.
But do you know what limits all that amazing video content? Accessibility.
Which is seriously frustrating for anyone who feels excluded or like
they’re missing out. You can help them avoid experiencing that FOMO simply by being focused on producing inclusive content.
Did you know that about 21% of Australians speak a language other than English at home? Or that around 1 in 6 - which is about 4.4 million - have a disability?
They’re big figures and if you’re thinking about creating a video for your brand or business, you need to clue into a few key tactics to make sure your video is as accessible as possible.
And that's exactly I'm drilling down on this week. Because everyone should be able to consume important information and video is one of the best ways to achieve it.
All it takes is a few simple tweaks or inclusions. Listen now to discover what they are!

Are you a non-profit organisation or charity wondering how to use video to attract volunteers? Well, you've landed on the right podcast.
I've always said that if a picture says a thousands words, a video says a million more. Actually, it tells the whole story. I mean, when it comes to building relationships, communicating messages and sharing stories, video is about as close as you can get to having a heart-to-heart with someone in person. Don’t you think?
It’s probably why more and more marketers, advertisers, communications professionals and nonprofits are using videos in their digital campaigns these days.
Apple. Amazon. Alibaba. Yep, they all use video marketing to build audiences, push product and drive sales. And they’re just the brands starting with ‘A’. But you don’t have to be a billion dollar company to benefit from the power of video. Local green grocers. Pilates studios. Even hair salons. They’re all using videos to tug at their customers’ heartstrings, capture their imaginations and persuade them to engage with their business.
But video marketing doesn’t always have to be about the ‘hard sell’. In my last blog post, I mentioned that I work closely with a lot of nonprofit organisations that regularly – and successfully – use video to inspire philanthropists and other members of the community to donate to their cause (which yes, does have a sales element to it. But not in the same ‘add to cart’ way that the latest video campaign from Nike might).
And do you know what many of these organisations also rely on video for? Recruiting new volunteers.
It’s something you might not have tried out before, even if you’re a veteran volunteer coordinator. And that’s ok - there’s no shade here, only advice. Which is what I’m dishing out today. Advice on using video to get more volunteers into your organisation.
The real trick is to getting the casting and messaging spot on. Oh, and knowing your audience inside out too of course.
I expand further in this episode. Listen now.

If you’ve been following this podcast for a while, or if you’re a loyal watcher of the Moonshine Moonshot series, (gold star if you’re both!), you’ll know how much I rate video communications.
I have dedicated my career to making movies, after all.
And I’m not alone. Today, videos are being made by pretty much everyone. It’s not just a creative outlet pursued by filmmakers, influencers or media personalities anymore. The rise of TikTok and Instagram reels has given everyone a shot behind the camera. No fancy film degree required!
But creating a powerful video that actually moves viewers to action? Now that does take some skill.
Action means many things, but for many of the organisations I partner with at Moonshine Agency, it’s about getting their audience to dig deep and donate. So in this episode, I’m sharing you some insider tips and tricks to help you create an effective fundraising video.

Format. Now that word probably sounds about as sparkly to you as ‘spreadsheet’. Or ‘data analysis’. Or – shudder – ‘budget’
But please don’t click pause! I promise you that the context I’m about to use the word format in can excite you. Because in this blog post I’ m steering my focus to video formats. Why? Well, I firmly believe that crafting a video format is one of the best ways to woo your audience and keep them coming back to your content.
I employ a format for almost every video I create – from 2 minute shorts for my company website, to impact documentary films that are shared on the silver screen, right though to the weekly Moonshine Moonshot series I produce with my co-host Mike Hill.
So what’s the deal with formats?
For one, they will dictate the general shape of your video. But it shouldn’t be confused with its genre. Let’s say your genre is ‘talk show’. That’s great. It might also run for 27 minutes, starting with a 5 minute guest introduction, followed by a 20 minute conversation and concluding with a 2 minute outro where you thank you guest and ask viewers to tune in next week. Now that’s your format.
I explain further in the episode.

Can you believe I’ve reached the fourth and final instalment in my mini series on creative video techniques. Time flies when you’re making movies, right!?
While I’ve already considered performance, lighting, graphics, camera angles and a variety of other techniques in parts one, two and three, there’s actually a few more creative tactics that you can utilise to push your video story forward. Things like location, set dressing and wardrobe.
I promise that all three can really enhance the overall production value of your video.

Lights! Graphics! Music!
Ok, so that’s not exactly the cue you or anyone in the business of filmmaking is used to. Lights! Camera! Action! Is what most of us in the industry screech at the beginning of a take.
But lately I’ve been challenging myself – and you! – to think outside the film canister.
If you’ve been playing along at home, you’ll know that I’m getting to the pointy end of this mini series, which is all about helping you produce creative and engaging videos that will leave your audience wanting more, more, more.
In episode one I looked at camera angles, movements and speciality shots. While in episode two I turned my eye to on screen performance, voice over and narration, and sound effects.
Now it’s time for part three – and this week I’ve covering off three techniques that will ensure you create next level videos stories.
There’s no time like the present, so let’s get straight into it

It's time for part 2 of my capsule series which is all about helping you make more creative videos.
If you missed part one, you can catch up now by scrolling back in your feed and listening to episode 20. I'll leave a link in the show notes.
Last time, I covered the clever camera angles, camera movements and speciality shots that you can incorporate into your next video to keep it more interesting for your viewers to watch (and more interesting for you to make!).
But this week, I’m delving into on-screen performance, narration and sound effects.
Let’s jump straight in.

Recently, I've been thinking about how to make my videos more creative videos.
Because I'm time poor and I don't want to waste any precious hours producing – let alone watching – boring ones.
So how do you make more engaging videos?
Well that’s I'm unpacked in this week's episode. Actually, I'm dedicated a whole capsule series of the show to this very topic. Because it’s not really something you can nut out in 10 minutes or less.
Since launching Moonshine Agency almost 12 years ago, I've mastered a few tried and tested techniques that i turn to whenever I need to inject a little more creativity into my films.
Now I'm ready to share them with you and every aspiring filmmaker, content creator or marketing professional out there.
In episode one, I'm looking at all the trending camera movements, specialty shots and camera angles that you can use to make your next video project a little spicier for your audience so you can keep them focused until the very end.

Are you struggling to make enough content? Between YouTube, Facebook, your website and Instagram, there’s a lot of platforms you need to be seen on.
Not to mention LinkedIn (your professional and company pages), Twitter, Pinterest and ReddIt. It can feel like you’re stuck in a never-ending cycle of content creation and distribution. And oh boy – it can be exhausting.
But what if it was actually way less time-consuming than you thought? What if you could simply take one piece of content and turn it into many?
Sounds like magic, doesn’t it? Guess what – it’s not.
Today I’m sharing something video makers, content creators and marketing professionals have been clued into for years.
The art of repurposing. Don’t worry – you don’t need to be a creative genius to master it!
It’s actually incredibly easy and a great way to boost your engagement, enhance your reach and give your content a chance to be seen by your audience – no matter where they choose to spend their time.
All you need is one brilliant piece of long form content – think a video, blog or podcast. That’s it, promise! I’ll show you what to do from there in this episode.

Should you create content for your audience, or find an audience for your content?
This dilemma feels a lot like the chicken or egg predicament that harks back to ancient times. And it seems to baffle content creators just as much as the latter torments scientists!
So today I’ve decided to unpack this little conundrum …starting with the answer (well, what my answer is at least).
Mike Hill – my co-host on the Moonshine Moonshot series – and I disagree on the whole content-before-audience or audience-before-content debate.
In Mike’s words: “You really need to find an audience for your content, rather than the other way around.”
But in my opinion? Your content has to come first.
I know this might come as a bit of shock – considering how much I carry on about knowing your audience – but if you try too hard to create content specifically for your audience, you’ll just end up losing your point of view. And your point of view is really important.
Sure, you need to understand who you’re talking to, and craft content that they can relate to, but that content still has to reflect you as the creator.
I explain my thinking in this episode.

This week I’m asking if defining your audience can help you connect with the right people – or if niching down is actually limiting your film’s reach.
Because I’ve found that a lot of people out there – filmmakers and film-lovers alike – think that “great” films appeal to everyone. And in the early days of my career, I was one of them.
I distinctly remember sitting in front of a commissioning editor with a new project I was incredibly excited about. When they asked me who it was for, I said “My project is SO important! I know everyone will want to see it.” The editor giving me a stern look and responded “Well my channel isn’t for “everyone”. So it’s probably not a good fit for us.” It was mortifying. But a valuable lesson at the same time.
These days, whenever a client comes to me with a video idea and tells me their target audience is “everybody”, I know I’m in for trouble. But I also get it.
With so many people using streaming platforms to watch videos, it’s tempting to get caught up in the idea that you should market your content to everyone with a smart device and a stable Internet connection. The thing is, your video isn’t going to relate to the five billion people online every day.
So really, to answer my own question – no, I don’t think that niching down will limit your film’s reach. In fact, I think it will ensure it gets it front of the right people, leaves a lasting impression and makes genuine impact.
I explain why in this episode. Listen in!

I thought I’d start this episode with a question – and it’s not a tough one. Where’s the best place to see a film? At the cinema? In your lounge room? The back of an aeroplane seat? What about on your smartphone while you’re waiting for the bus? Or on your laptop in between meetings?
Honestly, I could spend all day musing viewing scenarios! Because video content is everywhere – and between YouTube, Netflix and the local independent theatre, it’s hard to keep up with it all.
And guess who else it’s hard for? Your audience. You know, the people you’re creating video content for. So if you want those people to actually watch your content, you need to ensure that your video is perfectly tailored to the platform it’s published to.
I don’t know about you, but going to the cinema is a very different experience for me than watching a few clips on YouTube on a Monday afternoon while I wait for my kids to finish cricket practise. Experience being the operative word here.
With a trip to the cinema – I’m all in. I’m focused, I’ve set aside two, sometimes three hours to immerse myself in a story. I settle into my seat…hopefully a reclining one, turn my phone off (ok, I put it on silent), and I begin to relax as the curtains widen, the lights dim and the experience begins.
But when it comes to YouTube, I’m a bit more passive. I’ll dip in and dip out as needed and I’m usually trying to do something else at the same time. Unless of course it’s the latest episode of the Moonshine Moonshot series starring none other than Mike Hill and myself… Ahem, shameless plug aside, it’s just a different way to experience content.
You’re probably the same, especially when you’re watching Moonshine Moonshot of course – I’m know you give your full attention to every episode…
The point I’m trying to get at here is that while these two platforms might serve the same purpose – to share moving pictures –the audience (or at least their expectations) are quite unique.
And as a content creator, it’s something you should definitely be mindful of. Which is why I’m diving into it today in this episode of Moonshine Moonshot.

Know your audience. Know. Your. Audience. You really, need to get to know your audience.
If you’re a content creator, communications professional, marketer or filmmaker, you have almost certainly heard this over and over. It might even be the mantra you chant to yourself each morning at sunrise. Or the calming words you recite when you’re struggling to fall asleep on a Tuesday night.
Ok, maybe that’s just me… but I’m sure you consider it frequently…perhaps to the point that it’s started to lose its meaning?
Almost every marketing platform out there mentions something about “knowing your audience” on a blog or a landing page or a social media tile. One quick Google of the term generates an eye watering 6,400,000,000 results.
I’m even guilty of banging on about it myself on more than one occasion (in truth, I wrote an entire course – check out the show notes below to learn more). But why do you need to know your audience? That’s the part that often gets left unexplained.
And it’s what I’m drilling down on it in this episode. Because in my opinion, once you know your audience, it will give you a better dopamine hit than a block of your favourite chocolate. Mmm chocolate..
At a fundamental level, it’s because if you don’t know your audience, you won’t reach them. And if your content doesn’t reach people, you will not become a successful content creator.

New to filmmaking? It’s easy to get lost in all the lingo. Between tight framing, zoom lens, B-roll, cross-cutting and overlay, you might end up wondering if you found yourself learning a foreign dialect instead.
And it’s true. Filmmakers do have their own special language. The good news is that you don’t need to become fluent overnight. Phew!
But B-roll is definitely one terminology to get well acquainted with even when you’re just starting out. Why? Because B-roll is a big deal and learning how to apply it in your videos will make planing and executing your next shoot way easier.
Plus! Here’s a fun filmmaking fact for you: B-roll and overlay actually mean the same thing. So you can become an expert in these two terms in this single podcast episode. Talk about a win.
So settle in because this week Sue is chatting all things B-roll. What it is, how to capture it and why you need it to tell a great video story.

Ah, phones. You use them for pretty much everything already, so why not your next video project, too? You’ve seen what your eleven year old niece creates for TikTok – and all she’s using is your brother’s crummy Samsung Galaxy from 2016. Surely your brand new iPhone 13 Pro Max can do the trick?
Look. We’ve no doubt your niece has a gorgeous aesthetic and a seriously steady hand. But please – from one video creator to another. Don’t let her TikTok clips fool you into thinking that a great video can be made with a basic camera phone and a pretty background.
Yes smartphones are getting ..well ..smarter and smarter as the years roll on. That iPhone 13 you’re holding comes with portrait lighting, cinematic mode and can record in 4K. And it all sits in the palm of your hand.
So we get it. If you want to start making movie magic in a New York minute, using your smartphone seems like the fastest and most cost effective option available.
But will it actually generate the results you’re hoping for?
This is the big question Sue is pondering in this episode of Moonshine Moonshot.

If you think video marketing involves producing one video, publishing it to Vimeo or another hosting platform, sitting back and watching magic happen before your eyes – think again.
We mean, if you’re going to all the effort of making a video, don’t you want it to have the biggest bang for you buck? Of course you do! And to do that, you need to get your video out in as many places as possible.
Here’s the thing – video marketing is never just about one video or a single point of publication. It’s about utilising your video content across all your marketing efforts to engage more followers, attract new customers and wow loyal fans.
Got a website? Add it there. How about Facebook? Or Instagram? Twitter? A company LinkedIn page? Yep, post it there too please.
It might sound obvious but you should definitely be publishing your videos on YouTube (seriously, you’d be surprised by the number of clients who have looked at us blankly when we’ve mentioned YouTube. It’s not just for unboxing clips, product reviews or at-home workouts, folks!).
But you can think outside the square a bit too. Share your video at events. Or conferences. You can even add it to your print material via a QR code. There really are endless options, and Sue is going to talk you through many of them in this post.
So, are you ready to make the most of your video? You are? Great, click play and start learning everything you need to know now.

When it comes to making a great video, casting is key. It doesn’t matter how skilled your camera crew is. How excellent your storyboard and script are. If the weather was a sunny 27 degrees without a cloud in sight. Or even how delicious the catering was on shoot day (although keeping the production team well fed is a good way to ensure they’re on side).
Yes, all these elements are critical to getting your video just right (ok maybe not the catering) but none of it will matter if you get your talent wrong.
Picking the perfect hero, storyteller, presenter or messenger – whatever you want to call them – is an art in itself. An art that relies on some serious deliberation in the planning phase to be successful.
Without sounding too dramatic, we really can’t minimise the importance of casting the right messenger. It can mean the difference between producing a video that achieves the outcome you’re hoping for …. or one that completely misses the mark.
Sometimes you might have one messenger . Other times you could have more than 100 (we actually had 120 for a documentary we released in 2008 called The Man Who Souled The World).
You might choose to recruit internally and get employees or your executive team to star in your film. Or you may consider hiring a professional actor or presenter.
The choice is yours – but you need to get it right. And that's what Sue is going to help you with in this episode of Moonshine Moonshot.

So you’ve decided to make a video. You and your team have spent hours workshopping how it might look. Who it will feature. Where it should be published. And (quietly) how many views it might gain.
You’ve Googled a few video production houses in your local area. Reviewed more showreels than you’d like to remember. Sent a few emails, made a few calls. You’ve talked your idea through so many times, you’ve got it down to a succinct but compelling soundbite now.
Finally, you’ve found a group of filmmakers who get you and what your brand’s all about.
Now it’s up to them to take your idea and turn into a world-changing, viral video …right?
Oh. If only it was that simple.
As excited as you might be to dive head first into the production process, there is something you need to do days, weeks, maybe even months before you roll camera. And that’s writing a detailed brief for the creative team.
On this episode of Moonshine Moonshot, Sue walks you through how to write a killer video brief for the production team you're working with.

So you’ve heard that your business needs a video to thrive. Maybe more than one video in fact (more about that in ep 5 – check it out over here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/846682/10251895)
But what type of video is right for your business?
This is a question Sue gets asked pretty regularly by clients – and the possibilities really are endless.
Do you need an overview video? A case study or two? Maybe an entertaining ‘how-to’ video? Or something fun and engaging for social media? What about animation? Or a short documentary?
Oh my. That’s a long list. But we warned you – the possibilities are endless.
Here’s the thing though, when it comes to making a video for your brand or businesses, it’s never just as simple as picking a ‘type’ of video, rolling camera and hitting publish.
To truly figure out what type of video (or videos) you should invest in, you need to ask yourself one short but powerful question: Why? It sounds simple enough but you’d be surprised how many people get stumped by it.
So before you even start discussing the type of video you’d like to create, make sure you understand why you want to produce that video in the first place.
It could be to sell your product, build brand awareness, increase your Instagram following or promote your new campaign. Maybe it’s none of the above and that’s ok too.
But trust Sue on this one– once you work out the why, landing on the right type will be a lot easier.
If you need a little more guidance you can rest easy – in this episode of Moonshine Moonshot, Sue breaks down the top three videos she thinks will do wonders for your brand or business.

Messaging and storytelling. A match made in video production heaven?
We certainly think so!
But how do these two terms differ? And if you’re about to embark on a new video project, which one should come first?
Great question! We’re superglad you asked. You see, we’re pretty passionate about messaging here at Moonshine Agency. After 12 years making and producing impact films, the one thing we’re absolutely certain about is this: messaging matters. So you definitely need to get yours sorted before cracking on with your next video project.
If messaging is something you think you struggle with, can we suggest checking out an episode we made back in season one called Who’s The Messenger? You’ll find a link at the bottom of the show notes.
It will step you through the basics and give you a framework to craft a message that perfectly defines your brand, project or company. Hello, high performing video!
But before you start counting video views in your sleep, let’s rewind things – just a little bit. Because even if you have your messaging down to a fine art, it doesn’t mean your audience will actually take any of it on.
Yes, messaging is critical but if it’s not delivered in the right way? Well, it can fall on deaf ears. Remember that year 10 maths class when your teacher spent 45 minutes lecturing you on e=MC squared and pi is 3. something? No? Exactly.
Most people don’t learn by being lectured to. But with a little thing called storytelling, you can have your audience in the palm of your hand.
In this episode, Sue is going to help you understand the difference between messaging and storytelling and show you how combining the two can do wonders for your video marketing.

Once upon a time there was a video production company that defined a whole new genre of storytelling and it completely reimagined the concept in the eyes of the world….
That’s our narrative and we’re sticking to it!
Jokes aside, storytelling is an art older than human history and we’re lucky enough to play with it in some form every single day.
It crosses cultures, has been proven to help with memory retention and is quite simply the best way to keep people entertained.
But if you’re trying to create content that moves viewers to action, sometimes a great story isn’t enough. We know that’s a hard truth to swallow – particularly if you’re a longterm reader and are finally understanding how important storytelling is when it comes to video production. And it is important. Really, really important. But if your video is going to stand out from all the other millions of videos on YouTube, Facebook, Netflix and elsewhere, it needs to pack a serious punch.
Which means it must:
• Be well told
• Be shared by someone who your audience can connect with
• Present a challenge and the steps to overcome it
• Have a clear purpose and point of view
Pull this off and you’ll be on your way to creating a story that won’t just score your video thousands of views – it will change opinions. Behaviours. Even the world.
We like to call these impact stories. And how do you craft one of those? Well that’s actually our speciality at Moonshine Agency (we’re an impact film production house after all) and it’s what Sue is zoning in on in this episode.

In this episode, Sue shares 3 tips to help you simplify complex messages for your audience (using video of course!).
As a communicator of any description –a public speaker, content creator or filmmaker – you can sometimes know too much about your topic. The divide between experts and audience is often enormous and usually crammed with industry jargon, complicated concepts and too much assumed knowledge.
When you’re trying to make your message digestible for the ‘average Joe’ (or Jo) you need to explain things simply, show them why they should care and give them a single call to action.
Video is often one of the best ways to do this because it’s visually stimulating and persuasive. In fact, it’s considered one of the most engaging methods of communicating.
But there are a few things to keep in mind when crafting your video to make sure it’s just right. And that’s what Sue is breaking down in this episode of Moonshine Moonshot.

The saying might be less is more – but sometimes more is more. Especially when it comes to video content. Why? Because your audience is crazy for content. And all types of content too. From podcasts to blogs, social media posts and long form articles – they can’t get enough.
But video is what they’re really into and they're watching more of it than ever before. In fact, it’s estimated that the amount of video watched online has likely doubled since 2018.
So what does this mean for you as a budding video creator? Put simply, it means you need to be making lots and lots of videos to keep your audience firmly fixed on you and your brand.
But this is absolutely something you can take advantage of as a video creator. With so many eyeballs searching for videos, there is a lot of opportunity to build real rapport and a long-lasting connecting with the ones that click play on your content.
So how do you that? In this episode of Moonshine Moonshot, Sue walks you through everything you need to know.

Impact film is a whole new genre of filmmaking. Actually, scrap that. It’s a whole new way of changing the world! Sounds empowering, doesn’t it? But actually is an impact film?
Unlike the midday movie you caught last Sunday or the shows you watch mindlessly on Netflix most week nights, the purpose of an impact film is to inspire viewers to do something more than watch.
They’re designed to take your audience from passive consumer to active participant. Which is a critical difference –especially if you’ve got your sights set on changing hearts, minds and behaviours.
So if you’re giddy at the thought of making a tangible difference, then impact films might just be the film genre for you.
Sue will get your creative juices flowing and up to speed on impact filmmaking is this episode of Moonshine Moonshot.

What sort of video do you want to make? Funny, inspiring, informative or educational?
What sort of videos are there? Once you know what types of videos there are, and what they can be used for, it’s going to make your decision on what to make a lot easier.
Generally, web videos fit into four categories. Inspiring. Informative. Entertaining. Educational.
So which one of these categories does your communication idea fit into, how do you choose one?
It’s not hard once you have an understanding of what each one does. In this weeks episode, Mike and Sue are working through these categories and the types of videos that fit into them. They then discuss what sort of videos work in each category.
For example, educational videos can be training videos, capacity building, knowledge building or ‘how to’ videos. Their purpose is to educate the audience in some way.
Whereas entertaining videos can be funny, story-driven, creative and provoke emotion. There are many styles and options but their purpose is to entertain the audience. People want to share entertaining videos, they may not remember what they were about two days later but they’ll remember how it made them feel.
There’s a lot to unpack and we’ve got loads of examples and ideas in this weeks episode on Video Types and Their Uses.
As always, we’d love to know what you think so leave us a comment.

Do you struggle with your message or positioning? If you work in marketing, communications, advertising or even film making you’d be familiar with the elevator pitch concept. Basically, you can tell someone your idea clearly and effectively in the time it takes to travel in an elevator from the first to the third floor. Approximately 15 seconds. When you step out of that elevator you want them saying ‘this is a great idea, tell me more.’ Sounds easy but it’s surprisingly hard. And getting your message this succinct is really important if you want to get people on the journey with your project, brand or product.
In this episode of the Moonshine Moonshot series we’re asking you ‘Do you struggle with your message?’ and then unpacking how you can develop a really great message that you can use all the time, in conversation, in marketing and in life. Yea! One less dilemma to face.

What is content marketing? Because content marketing is a great asset to any marketing strategy and can be very affordable it’s worth the time to understand it better.
Our team are so used to using the term content marketing that it took a curious client to stop us one afternoon and say ‘Hey guys, what is content marketing?’
Oops, our bad for making the mistake of thinking everyone would know what we’re talking about.
Our apologies for using lingo and buzz words. It’s generally not our style but we were just so in our own world when we got that deserved reality check- thanks Scott for bringing it to our attention!
So we’d like to fix this oversight by dedicating an episode to the topic of ‘What is content marketing?’
According to Wikipedia the definition is:
Content marketing is a form of marketing focused on creating, publishing, and distributing content for a targeted audience online.
That’s it in a nutshell but if you want to understand it a bit more and learn how you can use it for your own purpose, have a listen to this episode and we’ll share some insights.

How to use your video for advocacy.

How to cast your talent. Are you about to create a video and need to work out who should be your onscreen talent? Then this episode will help you figure out who they should be. An actor, a personality or a real person. How do you decide who's going to best share your message?
It sounds pretty simple, pick the person who's going to best represent your brand or tell your message to your audience.
But if you use an actor, what if they don't sound authentic? If you use an expert, what if they talk in a way that's hard to understand? Should you cast a real person? What if they fudge their lines? (Disclaimer: I'm not suggesting actors aren't real).
There's actually quite a bit to think about. So we've put together this episode of the Moonshine Moonshot series on How to cast your talent. It will help you with some of the key considerations.

How to distribute your film? Long gone are the days where engaging a distributor was the key to getting your film out into the word.
Self-distribution has become far more common and having control over your film and where its shown can have enormous benefits to both yourself as the filmmaker and your audience.
So what are the ways to distribute your film and what role can a distributor play in the mix? Here are a few:
Video on Demand (i.e. Netflix, Amazon Prime)
Many of these, particularly Cinema on Demand, Hosted Screenings, YouTube and Social Media you can easily be set up by you aka self-distribution. You can go direct to broadcasters but this is where a distributor can be really beneficial. They go to all the markets and have contacts for all the broadcasters around the world. They’re going to be much better at getting your film in front of the right folks and negotiating deals- this is their specialist area. Of course, you can do it yourself but it’s extremely time-consuming. A theatrical release can also be much better handled by a distributor unless you have good contacts to set it up yourself.
It really comes down to you and your hopes for your film. Where are your audience and what are your goals? Are you planning a broad release to get it in front of as many eyeballs as possible or is it niche and you want a very specific group of people to see it?

In this episode of the Moonshine Moonshot series, Mike Hill and Sue Collins are breaking down how to make an impact with film and sharing lots of info on how they’ve turned their content into world-changing documentaries.
How can a film generate impact and what does that even mean?
We’re glad you asked!
After pouring your time and energy into a project be it big or small, you want to see results. But so often it’s a lacklustre outcome and your left scratching your head as to why it didn’t get the attention it deserved? Sure, your mum loved it, but let’s face it, she’ll love anything you do.
We hear about it all the time. The marketing team or ad agency, PR film etc promised it would have big results and was worth the investment, but all you hear is crickets. No thumbs up or the treasured heart emoji, no comments, likes or shares. And now you’re left with a bill and not much to crow about.
But, with a bit of planning at the outset, you can avoid having your project land in the vast silent vacuum of space and get it in front of an audience who craves it. (and shares, likes, heart.)
You’ll have them craving more, leading to high levels of engagement, big uptake on your call to action, and plenty for you to rave about. In short, your project will make an impact.

In this weeks episode of the Moonshine Moonshot series Mike Hill and Sue Collins are breaking down impact storytelling, specifically visual storytelling, and giving you tips on how to craft yours.
They‘re talking about impact, unpacking what that means and how you can leverage storytelling to get folks taking the action you need them to take.
So, what is storytelling for impact?
Ok, so it’s probably not a burning question but it just might be one you’re curious about.
Time and again we speak to people that have a really important mission or a great business but they just can’t find the right way to get their message across. Working out where to start and what platform to use is really confusing. There are so many options with everything from blogs, podcasting, websites, social media and traditional advertising. And some even freak out “Ah, storytelling, sounds like a creative thing.”
Not to mention the icky idea of being in front of a camera.
Here’s a secret, if you can craft a great story it won’t matter which platform you choose because it will work on all of them and people will love it.
It will engage them, intrigue them and you can end with a call to action that takes them to the next step in joining your tribe.
