How would you respond to the following statement?
“When it comes to my health, I rarely plan ahead and just take things as they come.”
Strongly Disagree Strongly Agree 1 2 3 4 5
People who answer on the “disagree” side are typically those who are proactively engaged in an ongoing focus on health, wellness and fitness. If your answer was “1”, you likely consider your proactive health focus to be an important part of who you are and a critical part of your identity as a person. What you may not know, however, is that your response to the statement is also influenced by your PATH Identity.
I will say more about this shortly.

Some people believe you can be healthy at any size. While it is simply not true, what many people don’t know is that it is possible to have a high BMI, and still be healthy. A BMI between 25-29.5 means you are overweight. A BMI of 30+ and you’re generally considered obese. What does that mean about how healthy you are?
The health risks associated with a BMI this high: hypertension, high LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood sugar, premature death and disability[1]. There are also two types of healthy obesity: Type I and II. If you’re obese, you may also have one of these types of healthy obesity.

I bet you don’t even know why you drink coffee. Be honest. After polling clients and friends, I found that most people started drinking coffee seemingly because it’s “an adult thing to do”, almost a rite of-passage into adulthood.
There is a problem with coffee, however, which no one wants to acknowledge: too much can have negative consequences. While it improves health and body composition in some, it contributes to weight gain and disease in others. There is an incredible amount of individual variability when it comes to coffee and health, which is what I’m going to explain in this article. At the end of the day, if I’ve learned one thing from female friends and clients, it’s that women can only thrive when coffee consumption is under control.

I see her in the gym every day. Let’s call her Sarah. She arrives in her heels and business casual attire, changes into her sneakers and Lulu gear, and begins to stretch and roll out on the gym floor. She smiles and chats with gym acquaintances before hitting the treadmill for a quick warm-up. She squats. She pushes a sled. She stretches. She leaves. I see her in the gym every day.
Sarah isn’t getting any thinner. As a matter of fact, Sarah appears to be gaining weight – and not the good kind. The story that I don’t know about Sarah is that she isn’t happy; she’s high strung, to say the least. She wakes up early, works long hours at an unsatisfying job, and then drags herself to the gym after every monotonous day. It’s the least she can do, right? She hates working out, but how is she going to lose that weight if she doesn’t get to the gym? She’s read all the fitness blogs, and they tell her that squats will build a booty and blast fat. So why is Sarah’s ass getting softer while her belt continues to tighten?

I decided to write this piece on workout nutrition because the Internet is full of contradicting “scientific opinions” about what you should put in your body in order to get any benefit from weight training:
“You need shakes with sugar and protein before working out to stimulate maximum muscle growth during workouts!”
“If you don’t drink carbs during your workout, you’ll be weak and your performance will suffer!”
“You’ll lose all your gains if you don’t slam a post-workout shake within 73 seconds of your last rep!”
I’m all for finding beneficial workout nutrition—I’ve been experimenting with mine for over a decade—but there are a few very important things to remember:

Attacking health and fitness goals is a lot like going on a long road trip to an exotic new location. You pick your destination and then you go, right? Simple as that! Well, first you need to fuel up. Maybe make sure your oil is topped up and that your tires are inflated. But what if your transmission is struggling? What if the clutch is wearing? How’s the suspension? Do you even know how to drive standard? Oh, and don’t forget that you need coffee, and you’ve got to pick up water and supplies. Can’t forget your license and passport, either. Now, what route will you take? The highway, toll road, back roads? What if there’s an accident? Or construction? What about the weather? The truth is, you can pick your destination but there are thousands of variables that can shape your path and the time it will take you to arrive. Ignoring important details or taking risky shortcuts doesn’t mean you’ll save time or get there any quicker; as a matter of fact, doing these things will almost always result in getting lost and can prevent you from ever reaching your ultimate destination. This is a random analogy, but this is exactly how I see far too many people approach health and fitness.

In the spring of 2008 I entered my first Strongman competition. At 24 years of age, this was the first time I’d ever competed in an individual sport. I grew up playing team sports like soccer and baseball, and although I dabbled recreationally in individual sports like golf and tennis, I never had the fire to pursue them competitively. As luck would have it, prematurely entering a Strongman competition changed my entire life; I’d always been somewhat of a competitive person, but learning to compete against myself made me a far more dynamic and ambitious human being.
Weightlifting taught me that there will always be room for excuses if you don’t put yourself in a position to be 100% accountable for personal results. Learning to do this is one of the top things I try to help clients realize, because it’s the ultimate cure for anyone struggling to break body composition plateaus; not only this, but developing a competitive mentality can also help make you a much more successful person in other critical areas of life. How is being competitive with oneself linked to such significant changes? I’m glad you asked…

When I was an undergraduate kinesiology student, just a short decade ago (good lord, I’m getting old), I was taught to believe the generally accepted rhetoric about health: eat lots of whole grains, avoid saturated fat, engage in cardiovascular activity, avoid eggs and red meat, eat oatmeal and fruit for breakfast, avoid high protein, etc. Fast-forward 10 years and I’m fighting tooth and nail to re-educate the brains which have been polluted with such misleading and harmful information. It has taken me years of anecdotal experience and hundreds of clients to fully reframe my approach on nutrition, and that is why I’m writing this article today. Despite the spread of new scientifically-backed information and real-world results, I continue to see knowledgeable clients slipping back into outdated ideologies with their goals being stunted along the way. If you’re having issues improving your health or reaching your goals, remember that these common beliefs could still be affecting your subconscious mind…

Nobody likes to be uncomfortable. It’s human nature to take the path of least resistance and to place ourselves in comfortable situations. Comfort equals safety, and instinctually safety means survival. But in this day and age, the safe and comfortable do not grow or excel; comfort, although warm and fuzzy, has become a limiting factor. Indeed, the only way to grow and learn is to leave your comfort zone. You’ll sweat, you’ll stumble and your confidence will be challenged, but in the end you’ll discover that you accomplished something new because you were exposed to a new stimulus and your brain had to find a way to help your body navigate the situation.
Although I’m writing to apply this concept to athletic training, this is also precisely how we all evolve as people and get through life on a day-to-day basis. Some do this more than others, however, and in my opinion this is the biggest contributing factor separating the successful and elite from the unsatisfied and average. The most successful people in this world create their comfort zone by embracing the unknown and uncomfortable; a comfortable discomfort zone, if you will.

As you may assume from Part 1 of this series, I found the antithesis of justification. What I did learn, however, is that the history of food exemplifies our abilities as a species to create, adapt and thrive in almost any food environment.
What we need to question, as a culture, is the recurring fear of food—and the stories we create to justify it—that’s accompanied each sweeping dietary change for the last 150 years. All of these fears have turned out to be unfounded, including the ones used to defend Paleo food selection.

Hi my name’s Kiefer and I have a weakness for fast food.
I’m lying. I have a penchant for fast food. What did you expect? I grew up as a fat kid in the Midwest where my parents took me to McDonalds, or a now-forgotten fast food chain called Burger Chef as a reward. To this day, when I smell McDonalds, I experience the nostalgia of family dinners, mini-celebrations and of an escape from the doldrums of a tiny town isolated in an ocean of cornfields (getting away from the smell of the hog farm down the street didn’t hurt either).
Now, at 40, I still enjoy the taste of a Filet-O-Fish, or a sack of them. I’ll sometimes eat four before even leaving the parking lot. I enjoy a diet where once every two or three months (and sometimes more often) I can satisfy my inner fat kid without consequence. That’s why I say that on Carb Nite or Carb Backloading, there is no food that you can’t eat…once you understand how your body works.
