Rana Dasgupta was born in the UK in 1971 and grew up in Cambridge. As an adult he lived in France, Malaysia and the US before moving to Delhi in 2000.
His first book, "Tokyo Cancelled", was published in 2005. Narrated by travelers stuck for a night in an airport, "Tokyo Cancelled" is a cycle of folktales about our contemporary world of globalization, corporations, film stars and illegal immigrants. It was short-listed for the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize and the Vodafone Crossword Award.
"Solo" came out in the UK in 2009 and was awarded the Commonwealth Writers' Prize. Set in Bulgaria, "Solo" follows the life and daydreams of a melancholy centenarian, so embarking on an epic exploration of science, memory, music and failure. "Solo" has been translated into twelve languages and will be available in the US in February 2011.

Thus, A Shadowed Past is a book of short poetry that I kept in my journal about my personal dysfunctional experiences in my life, my hurt, my thoughts, and hurtful places. I grew up in a dysfunctional environment and emotions were void. By embracing my writing as a therapuetic process, I can leave dysfunction behind in favor of creativity, love, flexibility, and happiness. More importantly, I can help others overcome the same plights that I encountered.

Dave Tolliver on Love, Life, Relationships, Fatherhood, & Responsibilities Of A Parent* Blaqpavarotti Men At Large discovered by the late great Gerald Levert are the last of a dying breed! In 1992 Men At Large shocked the world with its self titled debut on the Atlantic Records label. Their first single "Use Me" became an instant radio hit inspiring B.E.T, to use it for a station jingle. They would go on to release 4 more singles from the cd. "You Me", "Umm Umm Good", "Would You Like to Dance", and the RnB Classic "So Alone" which made Billboard Hot 100 list and was radio's #1 song of the year in 1993. Traveling the world with its other 90's cohorts (Rude Boys, Shai, Silk, H-Town, Levert II, Next, etc) they would leave each city with the reputation of being "Show Stoppers!" It didn't stop there in 1994 they released "One Size Fits All" gaining less success as the first but still garnering critical acclaim. Releasing 2 singles "Let's Talk About It" and "Holiday" top 10 and 20 respectively they continued to shock the world town by town. Being bred by Eddie and Gerald Levert gave these 2 an obvious advantage. As time moved on the duo would sever ties with the Levert camp only to find the next chapters not as plentiful as the beginning. Still riding off the success of its first 2 records the boys would continue to ride the rails of success as the people just couldn't get enough of the boys. In 1999 and 2007 they released "Love Struggle and Progress" and "Back on Top" doing mediocre numbers but plentiful on an independent level winning best group awards and independent video of the year nominations, only to lose to the great Kenny Rogers. As well as singing the men have appeared in over 23 stage plays, 7 movies and a host of judging, and hosting appearances across the country.

Spoken word Artist, Vocalist, Actress and Educator; born and raised in Trenton, NJ, this one-woman show has toured the globe recording and performing alongside such notables as the Poor Righteous Teachers, Lauryn Hill, Big Pun, Sista Soulja, Mos Def, and Mums just to name a few. Nearly a decade ago, she was ranked the 11th poet in the nation, following her incredible performance at the 2001 Essence’s Music Festival in New Orleans. There, she shared the stage with Iylanya Vanzant and Tavis Smiley. Her poem entitled “Goodie Goodie” has gained national recognition and according to Susan Taylor of Essence Magazine, “…her words could save our nation”. In 2005, following the entitlement of ‘New Jersey Slam Queen”, she featured on the 5th season of the Peabody Award winning Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam. This quadruple threat also demonstrated her acting prowess in the independent film “What Goes Around”, winning the film the Best Urban Feature Film Award at the 2004 New York International Independent Film and Video Festival. In addition to starring in a number of off-off Broadway productions, she has also written and starred in her own ninety-minute play entitled “The Classifieds”, which premiered at the historical Nuyorican Poets Café, and was nothing short of breathtaking reviews. She has also written and co-directed the educational play entitled Free Your Rhyme, sponsored by the National Education Dance Institute, in conjunction with the Trenton Dance Institute Even. On 12/12/10 Narubi released her debut independent album, “IAM LivingMath, where she demonstrates her command to melodically and scientifically annihilate each and every track. With a mix of hip-hop, spoken word, and soulful singing, Narubi has truly shown her ability to create conscious music that crosses all barriers. Narubi currently resides in Brooklyn, NY where she teaches middle school math.

Sparky, born Doreen Broadnax, grew up in the Bronx, NYC. Sparky first recorded with Brooklyn crew The Playgirls who were on Sutra records. In 1984, Sparky appeared in a cameo on her boyfriend Spyder D's “Placin the Beat” on Profile. Her first solo effort was “Sparky’s Turn (Roxanne You’re Through)” on NIA records produced Spyder D. This was one of the first answer records in the infamous “Roxanne Wars” of the mid-80′s, and the first one to be aimed squarely at Roxanne Shante. 1985 saw a vinyl showdown with Roxanne Shante which included tracks called “The Battle” (against her old crew The Playgirls, produced by Spyder D) which appeared in 3 mixes and “Roxanne’s Revenge”. Also in 1985, she cut a track called “He’s My DJ” b/w “She’s So Def” with Kool DJ Red Alert.. In 1987 she released “Throwdown” and “Sparky’s Back” both produced by Spyder D for B-Boy records Sparky also released an album on B-Boy in 1988 which was called “Sparky D’s world” in the UK but titled “This is Sparky D’s World” in the US. She was also able to overcome some drug problems and was able to get her life back on the right path. In 1991 she made an appearance alongside Grand Master Caz on Malcolm McClaren and The World Famous Supreme Team Show’s album on the record “Opera House”. Now In 2013 Sparky D is still a writer, motivational speaker, and GateKeeper Of That Real HipHip!!!

Umar is a blood relative of Frederick Douglass, the great black Abolitionists and orator. As a school psychologist Umar evaluates children ages 3-21 in an effort to determine if they have educational disabilities and a need for special education services. Tony would embark on a project that would change his life forever and he would be compared to the late Charles Dew. Tony Hansberry responsed to a challenge to improve a procedure called the Endo Stitch used in hysterectomies that could not be clamped down properly to close the tube where the patients uterus had been. Using a medical dummy, the 14-year-old devised a vertical way to apply the endo stitch, completing the stitching in a third of the time of traditional surgery.
