Learning Uncut is about real conversations around real learning solutions and real experiences with real advice from real people.
We’re all about keeping it “real.”
Here’s an overview of our approach:
Strategy and tactics. We want to unpack the strategy and how-to’s of creating great learning solutions, frameworks and teams.
CONVERSATIONS, NOT SCRIPTED DISCUSSION Our podcasts are professional but not so edited and polished that they lose their authenticity. We want our audience to hear real people having real conversations and sharing real examples and advice.
PROGRESSIVE We want to showcase the “unsung L&D heroes” out there doing great work, being brave and trying new things.
PRACTICAL We invite our guests to share tips and strategies to help listeners take their solutions to the next level. We aim to provide actionable takeaways for our listeners through show notes, links and downloads wherever possible.
Michelle Parry-Slater is joined by Andrew Lawson (2026 AITD L&D Professional of the Year) and his client Alice Smith, about a deliberately different approach to leadership training.
Instead of two days out of the office, where delegates leave with overwhelmed brains but make little change back at work before the learning gets totally forgotten, Andrew offers a leadership programme deliberately designed to benefit learners. Using spaced learning practice, retrieval practice, and highly engaging short interventions, Andrew shares his TARGER framework, which is a brain-friendly learning design checklist built on neuroscience. Alice shares what it actually felt like from the client side to experience an 8-month programme of 90-minute sessions a month plus a variety of practice activities and coaching.
With results that shifted behaviour and real change, together they turned a group of siloed managers into a genuine leadership cohort. This is a masterclass in how to create a much more effective, efficient, engaging and enjoyable leadership programme.

For three years running, AI topped the list of what's hot in L&D. This year it dipped, and Donald H Taylor is taking it off the survey altogether.
Don has run the Global Sentiment Survey for over a decade. In this Elevate episode, he joins host Michelle Parry-Slater to go back across five years of data and unpack what it actually tells us about where the profession is heading.
They get into the transformation triangle's three destinations for L&D, the two separate futures Don thinks the profession may be splitting into, and why compliance training deserves to be taken seriously as a shop window rather than dismissed as a chore of endurance. And why hope on its own isn't enough. It needs action behind it, and courage for when things get hard. It's a conversation grounded in research, honest about what's difficult right now, full of ideas, and genuinely hopeful about what's next for L&D.

It will take 118 years, at the current rate of change, before an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person can go to work without hearing a racial slur. This is not history. This is what is happening in Australian workplaces right now.
In this Elevate episode, Michelle Parry-Slater speaks with Professor Nareen Young and Josh Gilbert from the Centre for Indigenous People and Work at the University of Technology Sydney, both Aboriginal researchers and practitioners who have spent decades working to shift the Indigenous employment narrative from deficit to truth.
Together they share the findings of the 2025 Gari Yala (Speak the Truth) report, Australia's only Indigenous-led national survey of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment experiences and make a direct, generous and urgent call to L&D professionals to act.

Recognition is often written off as a "nice to have." In this episode, Michelle Parry-Slater speaks with Sarah McVanel, Canada's recognition expert and founder of Greatness Magnified, and Lisa Anstey, manager of Medical Device Reprocessing at Waterloo Regional Health Network, to make the case that recognition is not soft.
Recognition is one of the most powerful learning and behaviour-change tools available. Together they share the story of a deeply disengaged hospital team that became one of the most recognised in the country.
The framework, the coaching, the daily huddles, and the sheer persistence behind that shift. If you work in L&D and you have ever wondered how to make learning stick, or how to advocate for what your people really need, this one is for you.

The brief was simple: we need an L&D function. Go and start one. In this episode, Michelle Parry-Slater speaks with Elyse Toomey, Head of Learning and Development at Ironbark Financial Group, about what it really takes to build an L&D department from nothing in a fast-moving financial services business, from coaching coaches to become trainers and launching peer-to-peer onboarding at scale, to doubling LMS engagement, growing a team of six, and learning to lead with a strategy that bends with the business. A story for anyone who has ever been handed a blank page and told to get on with it.

Most leadership programs start with the how; the workshop, the elearning, the coach. The business case often comes later, if at all.
In this episode, Michelle Parry-Slater speaks with Tina Robinson, founder of WorkJoy and author of Developing Your Business Leaders, and her client, LaTanya Foster, VP of People at global travel accessories brand BÉIS, about what happens when you start with the why instead.
Together they share the story of Altitude, a director-level leadership development program built for a fast-moving, disruption-hit business and make a compelling case for why treating learning as a business investment, not a budget line, changes mindsets.

We rarely stop to look back. One achievement blurs into the next, and before long we've accumulated years of practice without ever taking stock of what we've actually learned.
In this episode, Michelle Parry-Slater invites Greg Wilton - a St. Louis-based L&D practitioner with a career spanning darkroom photography, web publishing, global e-learning, and generative AI - to do exactly that. Together they trace the experiences, pivots, and hard-won insights that shaped his thinking: from a process safety briefing that reframed the entire purpose of intake, to a human-centred questioning methodology that quietly became a masterclass in performance consulting, to his current thinking on wisdom management and a proposed update to Bloom's Taxonomy for the age of AI.
A reflective conversation that will send you back to your own career with fresh eyes.

Hearing loss is more common than most workplaces acknowledge. Around one in six Australians, one in eight Americans, and one in five UK adults lives with some form of hearing loss, tinnitus or D/deafness. Yet at HSBC UK, only a handful of colleagues had formally disclosed a hearing loss before this project launched.
In this episode, Michelle Parry-Slater speaks with Georgie Cooke from Lima Delta and Louise Bassiri from HSBC UK about their award-shortlisted hearing loss awareness programme, created with the RNID and learning partner Jam Pan.
Rather than telling colleagues about hearing loss, they simulated it, placing learners inside first-person video scenarios in real HSBC locations, with audio shaped by RNID audiologists to recreate common hearing loss experiences.
The results: over 4,000 voluntary completions, a 400% increase in colleague disclosures, nearly 2,000 hearing checks taken, and for some, a life-changing diagnosis.
Arnika Knight and Michelle Parry-Slater share the decade-long journey of modernising L&D for 80,000 volunteers at Girlguiding UK. From navigating change resistance to building a multi-modal learning ecosystem, their story is packed with practical lessons for any L&D professional working at scale. The conversation explores respecting volunteers' time, supporting motivation and using a clear learning strategy to modernise learning while maintaining strong human connections.

Helen Sedcole, the Chief People and Culture officer at Z Energy, discuss how they are approaching leadership and leadership development for a different future. There is no pushing people through standard modules and declaring that they are ‘done.’ Rather leadership development is seen as continuous process that it is part of everyone’s work to take responsibility for and engage within the context of their work.
It’s timely that I speak with Helen this week as it coincides with the L&D Innovation and Tech Fest in Auckland on 8-9 June 2022. This conference runs alongside the HR Innovation and Tech Fest. One ticket gets you into both. This is a really well curated conference, with several think tanks run every year with People and HR professionals to understand what challenges they face and what they really want to discover and learn about. Helen is one of a number of excellent speakers, many of whom are sharing case studies about experiences and solutions they’ve been undertaking on aspects of that we are grappling with in the People and Capability areas – such as diversity and inclusions, belonging and connection, wellbeing, and leadership.

In the wake of the shift to remote working during the pandemic the need to connect and collaborate effectively was amplified. We continue to explore what this looks like in evolving hybrid working models. At the same time there has been a resurgence of interest in social and collaborative learning.
In the 2022 Global Sentiment Survey recently published by Donald H Taylor we saw a global rise in support over the past two years for collaborative and social learning. In light of this I’ve decided to republish an episode about the peer learning approach called Working Out Loud. During the special Learning Uncut Emergent series in 2020 I spoke with John Stepper, the founder of workingoutloud.com and Katharina Krentz from Bosch about Working Out Loud.
I’ve done a light edit of the original episode to remove some of the context that was very specific to the point we were at with the pandemic in 2020, ensuring that the episode remains relevant.

A conversation between the Emergent Team – Michelle Ockers, Laura Overton and Shannon Tipton. We recap research insights from Emergent 2020 podcast series. These include five L&D ‘thinking habits’ and the four lenses that help L&D to emerge stronger. These insights were converted to practical action in the Emerging Stronger masterclass series.
We reflect on what both the participants learned and our own ‘aha’ moments and learning as the hosts and perennial ‘explorers’. The shifts we saw in our participant mindset and actions showed us that Emerging Stronger isn’t just about coming out of the pandemic more relevant and effective than ever. There is an evergreen opportunity for L&D professionals and teams to see themselves differently, think differently, make changes and take bolder action to increase their impact.
Stay tuned for an Emergent podcast mini-series in December 2021/January 2022 exploring what it takes to emerge stronger at an individual level. And keep an eye out for information about the next Emerging Stronger masterclass which starts in February 2022.

Work, Connect and Learn is a collaborative work and learning initiative that was created and delivered at Coca-Cola Amatil (CCA) over five years ago and was very progressive at the time. It is an approach that is still highly relevant in 2020 as learning professionals seek to support people to connect, work and learn in a digital environment. It serves as an example of how knowledge sharing can be used to reduce the risk of dependency on a small number of experts or ‘go to’ people in an organisation. It also illustrates how social learning can be aligned to business strategy and goals.

The pandemic has highlighted our interconnection as humans everywhere. Yet work does not always feel like an experience that promotes connection and belonging. Working Out Loud (WOL) has the potential to address that while building critical skills for the digital, networked era. John Stepper describes Working Out Loud as a practice where you interact with other people related to a goal that you care about, building your network and developing a sense of relatedness with other people in a purposeful way. Some skills are difficult to practice in a realistic environment. Having effective difficult conversations is one of them. Denise Meyerson of MCI Solutions worked with a provider in disability services sector in Australia to support the onboarding of 165 new local area coordinators spread across a wide geographic area. She describes how a simulated environment (which she refers to as ‘light virtual reality) was used to equip them to have some difficult conversations with clients about eligibility for services.

We know learning from failure is anything but straightforward. In October 2019 a Fast Company article, Learning from Failure article, discussed then practice in startup companies of writing a failure postmortem upon closing down. Essentially they share what went wrong with the greater community. There appears to be huge pressure to keep up the facade of success when, in fact, things are falling apart around them.
What then can the L&D industry do to take the concept of “learning from failure” and use itas a construct for organizational success? Jeff Mariola from Mariola Unlimited and Brian Murphy from AstraZeneca discuss key strategies and tactics for learning from the past and applying lessons for current and future success.

The global pandemic response has pushed many people out of physical workspaces. How will we use office spaces in the future and what will they look like? What about classrooms and other spaces used for face-to-face learning? Is it time to abandon the classroom forever? The contrasting pandemic-era experiences of David in Australia and Anne in Spain make for a lively exploration of this topic.

Nick Howe, the Area9 Chief Learning Officer, is joined by Henrik Harder who was the CEO of the Danish roadwork education centre VEJ-EU in late 2018 when the project we discuss was undertaken. They describe shifting a full day of face to face theory training with a very diverse audience to an adaptive, personalised online platform. One outcome was that the time to complete the knowledge component of the course reduced from 8 hours to a median of less than 3 without removing any content and allowing even the slowest of learners to achieve proficiency.

Jem Mills and Bianca Zingus join us in this episode. They are from Social Futures who are a community service organisation that run programs to bring about positive change in local communities. In episode 13, published in November 2018, Jem Mills spoke about a co-created change management approach at Social Futures. Bianca Zingus was a participant on the Change Conversationalists program featured in episode 13 and has since joined Jem’s Practice Excellence team. Having been part of the original co-created change program, Bianca saw the opportunity to apply the process to improve a program that she was working on called Connecting Home. In a single day co-created change workshop 34 improvements were identified to the program.
This episode is an example of a change in ways of working being piloted or seeded and then advocates of the approach continuing to apply the new way of working to address other issues or opportunities in an organisation.

To mark the milestone of Learning Uncut’s 50th episode three learning professionals at different points in their career join us to discuss the past, present and future of learning. The concept for this discussion is to look out to 2050 (a play on it being our 50th episode) and consider what the world of work will look like then and how learning professionals can prepare now for the future. Laura Overton, Amanda Ashby and Jelle Buiting explore what we can learn from the past 30 years, the challenges of the present, and how we should move forward. While this episode was recorded prior to the COVID-19 crisis, the conclusions drawn about how to prepare for the future are highly relevant. It’s time for the learning profession to come of age and play a more adult role in the world of business.

David Broadhurst, the co-founder of Codesafe, is a construction industry veteran. He opens Ep 49 with a story from nine years ago about an incident where someone on site where he was supervisor was almost killed. He began searching for a better way to ensure that workers in high risk sectors actually understood safety critical information and worked safely. He created the Codesafe methodology which has captured the attention of safety bodies in Australia and been the subject of research by the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) to understand what makes the approach effective.
Rae Grech is a health and safety manager who has a training background. In 2013 Rae engaged David’s team to create video materials for high risk processes in ceiling insulation. Their work together resulted in significant systemic improvements in safety at the organisation. While easy to access content is part of the reason for this, the real driver is a participatory approach that engaged workers and unlocked their tacit knowledge.

In this episode he discusses the role of emotions in learning, going so far as to suggest that emotion is the process behind learning. In a period of heightened emotion it’s even more important to understand what matters to people – what their concerns really are. He strongly recommends avoiding content dumping and using resources rather than courses to respond to people’s concerns.

The pressing need is for learning professionals to think, act and work closely with business stakeholders to help them solve business problems. This has always been the need – it’s just more critical now. They give steps, illustrated with real examples, to use a standard methodology to uncover key organisational challenges and design with learning in the workplace as a start point. Another critical role for learning professionals is to identify learning that is happening in the workplace (aka improved processes, faster innovation cycles) and transfer that to relevant others.

She discusses solid evidence-informed approaches you can draw on and suggests ways of applying them. In particular Connie warns against ‘page-turning, click-next’ design and suggests using eLearning for spaced practice and repetition as part of a blended online approach.

Mars is the third largest distributor of food in the world – both for people and pets. They employ over 100,000 associates and have in excess of 140 production sites. In 2018 they started work on a cross-discipline global initiative to streamline systems process and roles for traceability of products and materials across the supply chain at Mars – from farm to fork.
Rachel Horwtiz led the work across 11 separate colleges at Mars University to collaborate on the learning solution. Not only did she need to unite the learning teams across a federated model, she also needed to guide them and their stakeholders to work in new ways in an agile project environment.
Trish Uhl was engaged to bring her expertise across a range of disciplines including IT business readiness, performance and learning to create an integrated strategy for learning, change management and communications. She introduced learning engineering to this program. We explore what learning engineering is, why it was so well-suited to this initiative, and dig into how human-centred design and data analytics were used in parallel on this project.

Julian Davis of Queensland Rail and Naomi Waldron from Easy A discuss Queensland Rail’s onboarding and compliance refresher program - fittingly called All Aboard. This program was winner of best onboarding and induction program in the Australian Institute of Training and Development 2019 Excellence Awards.
This program moved onboarding from a cumbersome paper-based three-month long process to a highly engaging digital learning experience that new staff complete on their first day. With the inclusion of compliance refresher modules, it touches all 7,000 staff and has significant impact in a short period of time. It’s also a really fit for purpose learning solution. Not only did it meet the technical and design requirements of the project, but significant effort went into making it a strong cultural fit.

In this second edition in the What Happened Next Series Arun Pradhan discusses what’s happened with the Learn2Learn app and his work on organisational learning agility since he spoke with us in Episode 18 (published January 2019). Arun’s experience in 2019 is that a campaign approach is critical to building learning ability, regardless of the technology used. This approach has to be based on connecting with what people care about and focus on – which is doing their job better. Arun is an in-demand speaker at Australian learning conferences. Several of our Learning Uncut guests have nominated him as one of favourite ‘learning resources’ – you’re bound to gain insights whenever you listen to Arun, as this conversation illustrates.

In this special edition of Learning Uncut we catch up with some of our earlier podcast guests and ask them ‘What Happened Next ...’ We get an update on how the solution discussed in their original episode has continued to develop and what impact it’s had over the longer term. We also explore what our guests learned through this work and how it’s influenced their subsequent work.
We have three great guests in this episode:
Key themes include the sustainability of learning solutions and things that can undermine long-term viability, the value of experimentation and how solutions can evolve over time if you are open to questioning your assumptions, and the power of story-telling for learning.

“I am so much more optimistic than I have been in several years about the state of the profession and where we're headed. I think you find what you're looking for, right? If you want evidence that the learning profession is dying, you can go out and find it and find the conversations and the people who are thinking that. If you want evidence that learning and development is thriving, come and listen to Learning Uncut because we share stories every fortnight about learning professionals out there, taking the risks, doing good work, being really progressive. I think there's this re-imagining of learning in organisations, and it's definitely underway. I think it's amazing and very inspiring.”

ASHM is the Australasian Society for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, and Sexual Health Medicine, and in this episode we share a story of translation and localization for their learning solution, which at the time of recording has been published in 14 languages across 10 different countries.
“Before these new medications came out, hepatitis C was mostly treated in specialist settings, so in a tertiary hospital. And then because these new treatments were much easier, the side effect profile was way less, there came an opportunity to be able to expand hepatitis C treatment out of tertiary care and into the community setting. So into primary care, into drug and alcohol clinics. Really making it easier for the patient to access treatment. But I guess the gap that we saw was that the clinicians that are working in these services traditionally haven't had experience with hepatitis C treatment before. So we saw a need to really upskill this workforce.”
Jane and Nikitah talk through their experiences of the logistics of managing this mammoth project, working together in partnership as client and solution provider, co-ordinating a wide range of team members and stakeholders, managing time and budget, selecting the right tools and how strategic partnerships enabled them to get this education into the right hands and help achieve the World Health Organisation goal of eliminating Hepatitis C globally.

Aged care workers are empathic by nature. ACH wanted to provide their workers with an even deeper insight into customer needs through simulating the lived experience of an older person. Wearing suits designed by Sydney University, participants carry out daily activities that allow them to experience a range of conditions including vision impairment, hearing loss, a hunched posture, reduced tactile sense and shortened gait. Empathy suits are a tool that helps their workforce build empathy, challenge stereotypes, respect uniqueness and individual identity, raise awareness of potential limitations in the environment and communicate effectively with customers.

Since starting in his role as GM of Learning at National Australia Bank (NAB) Damien Woods has set out to transform organisational learning. In this episode he shares a story that illustrates the kind of shifts underway in learning at NAB.
Shortly after starting in this role he visited the NAB Direct Bank Call Centre where he discovered that new starters were in a classroom for 17 days before starting to take customer calls. Using a design thinking approach the learning team redesigned induction. The new blended program reduced the classroom training to just 4 days interspersed with other learning and work activities. The business impact includes a 30% increase in speed to proficiency and 80% reduction in call escalations for new starters. Listen to this episode to hear how this was achieved.

“Curation means very different things to a lot of people. Curation is really the art of bringing together different learning assets or resources, to create meaning for people, and for people to find the meaning in that for themselves. If you think about how we traditionally have done things in the past, it's really around creation, getting people from point A to point B, very instructional. Curation is very different to that; how do you bring together multiple points of view, potentially opposing points of view in order for people to find meaning?” In this episode, Wes Tobin shares his team’s curation journey at Westpac and how listening to what learners want and giving instructional designers more freedom is changing the way their organisation learns. Over the past two years Spark NZ has embarked on an ambitious transformation of learning in order to build a ‘culture of performance.’ . Their goal has been to ‘democratise knowledge’ and create a self-sustaining performance ecosystem. This is Part 2 of our discussion with Kerry Peguero and Liv Wilson from the Learning Enablement Team about their innovative approach. In Part 1 (Episode 30) we covered user-generated content and the use of an ‘orienteering’ approach to induction that builds self-directed learning behaviours. We recommend you listen to Part 1 first.
Here in Part 2 we pull the strategy together by looking at their performance-focussed accreditation program and the technology platform they developed in-house because there wasn’t an LMS on the market that could meet their needs. We also delve into the mindset shift that the learning team has made. Listen to both episodes to get the full picture of this contemporary approach that is shifting how learning happens and the role of learning professionals in the organisation.

Emelia Winter talks to Learning Uncut about how she transitioned a Working Group into a Community of Practice for L&D Consultants at NSW Health. She shares her insights around what has made the community successful, the challenges in running and sustaining a CoP and the benefits it has had for both the members and the organisation.

Digital literacy is not a new concept having been widely researched since the mid-1990s. Yet the definitions remain contested and can extend to include socio-cultural and political dimensions. Current perspectives are willing to accept that digital literacies exist as a plural phenomenon inclusive of information literacy, computer literacy, network literacy, and media literacy. However, it must also address the basic skills required to address new ways of learning and working in an increasingly complex digital environment. The evolving digital capabilities contained in the framework are not about the technology; they go beyond skills sets to be mapped against competency frameworks. They exist at the intersection of people and technology, work and learning. They evolve as an organisation or institution transforms its foundational elements of being in business – how people interact within the organisation, how learning is embedded, how work is organised, and how information is shared. Digital capabilities are both personal and collective; they belong to you and your learning context.
The digital capabilities framework is based on outcomes from doctoral research and developed through engagement with professional educators in organisational learning. It provides guided pathways through scenarios that aim to support people being able to learn and perform effectively in the fast-moving, complex digital world that is shaping new realities of learning.
