Using pop music in your music classroom can be so much fun! Students love learning something they know or have heard before, playing music that they listen to at home, and performing songs for an audience who also knows the music. For the next several episodes I’ll be sharing pop song arrangements that I’ve created and used with my students for xylophone ensembles, but before we get to the actual arrangements I thought I’d share some tips for how you can find and create pop song arrangements to use in your classroom. What to look for, how to determine if a song would be a good fit for an arrangement for xylophones, and things to think about as you arrange pieces.

When I first started teaching middle school general music, I had no idea about how to incorporate peer leadership into my music classroom. I was comfortable with group work, centers, and whole group teaching, but didn’t know quite how to teach students how to teach each other. A huge thanks to music educator Chris Judah-Lauder for her guidance, patience, and wisdom in helping me learn the importance of student leadership and teaching me how to use peer teaching in the classroom. I can’t do this episode without acknowledging what I learned from her in this area because I wouldn’t have known where to begin or how to do it without her! I’ll refer to this as both peer leadership and peer teaching throughout the episode. I realize these terms can refer to different things, but in today’s episode, they’re going to refer to the same idea: that of guiding one student in your room to helping or working with another student in the room.

The songs I’ll be sharing today are perfect to use with your upper elementary classes or choir, especially if you’re working on helping students learn how to sing in 2-parts. The pieces be great for a fall concert, to sing in class around Halloween or to use within a specific program related to a theme such as animals (The Bat) or literature (Edgar Allen Poe and William Shakespeare). We’ve all been there. You plan the lesson. You prep the materials. On paper everything looks great. Class arrives and you’re ready to go, but it doesn’t go the way you planned. Adrian Gordon is an active performer, composer, and music educator living in Charlotte, NC. His colorful compositions are captivating for musicians of all ages from very easy to advanced levels. Over the years Gordon has written several acclaimed works for string orchestra such as "Apocalypse" and "Song of the Ocean Winds" to name a few.
Adrian takes pride in creating music that is fun and pedagogically sound at all levels. Mr. Gordon currently serves as the orchestra director at Providence Day School in Charlotte, NC. He received his B.A. in music from the University of Miami, and his Masters degree in Music Education at Florida International University.
In addition to teaching, Mr. Gordon is a composer with Alfred Music Publishing and the founder of Leap Year Music Publishing, which publishes string music for elementary, middle, and high school ensembles. Mr. Gordon's compositions appear on the California, Florida, Texas, Maryland, and Georgia Orchestra Association Music Performance Assessment Lists. His compositions are distributed through JW Pepper and have been performed throughout the world. Adrian resides in Charlotte with his wife Kelly and their two sons.

Meet Clint:
Clinton Ray Hardy is in his fifteenth year of directing choral music, and is the head choral director at Trinity Springs Middle School in Keller ISD. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Texas Christian University and earned his Master’s degree in Music Education from the University of North Texas.
At Trinity Springs, Mr. Hardy directs seven choirs and serves as the head of the fine arts department. His choirs consistently have earned Sweepstakes awards for superior ratings at the yearly University Interscholastic League Concert and Sight-Reading Contest. Mr. Hardy’s Varsity Treble Choir was invited to perform at this past year’s 2023 Texas Music Educators Association Convention. Previous to this, his Varsity Treble Choir performed at the 2022 Southwestern American Choral Directors Association Convention, his Varsity Tenor-Bass Choir performed at the 2021 National American Choral Directors Association Convention. In addition, his Varsity Treble Choir performed at the 2019 Texas Music Educators Association Convention and in 2018 his Varsity Treble Choir performed at the MS/JH National Cambiata Institute Convention. The Keller Honor Choir, under the co-direction of Clinton Hardy, performed in the elementary division for the 2017 Texas Music Educators Association Convention, and in 2014 his Varsity Tenor-Bass Choir was invited to perform at the MS/JH National Cambiata Institute Convention.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Mr. Hardy currently serves as the National ACDA JH/MS R&R Chair. He also currently serves as the TMEA Region 30 MS/JH Secretary. Mr. Hardy is frequently requested to be a clinician/conductor for All-City, All-Region, and All-State Choirs. He is an adjudicator for UIL Concert and Sight-Reading contests throughout the state and is a judge for Solo and Ensemble contests in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. He is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Choral Directors Association, the American Choral Directors Association, and the Texas Music Adjudicators Association.
He is proud to have had 120 students selected for the TCDA All-State Choir and 663 Middle School All-Region Choir members selected during his thirteen years of teaching. Mr. Hardy has been named Teacher of the Year three times in teaching career. The first happened in 2013-2014 for Linda Jobe Middle School in Mansfield ISD, and the second and third were at Trinity Springs MS for the 2016-2017 and the 2020-2021 school years. In 2014 he was awarded the TCDA Young Director of Distinction Award.
He strives to first teach his students how to be the best humans possible and then to be excellent musicians.

I’ve often found it challenging to find books that I love to use with my older students so I created this fairy tale project to use possibly familiar stories in a way that allows students to work together to create short speech pieces/raps and put together an entire classroom performance, if you desire.
Today I'm sharing the process I use with my students for this project over four class periods. Use it as a guide with your students or follow it as shared!
You can use this project with the fairy tale stories that I’m sharing today or use other themed literature: the little people musical artist books would work for this, Aesop’s fables, or any group of stories based on a theme. Bryson Tarbet is a PreK-6th grade general music teacher just outside of Columbus, Ohio. He received his Bachelor’s of Music in Music Education from Ohio Wesleyan University and his Master of Music in Music Education with a Kodály emphasis from Capital University.
Bryson spent his first year out of college as part of an elementary school intervention team and he fell in love with working with students with disabilities. Due to this experience, as well as his personal experience as a neurodiverse individual, Bryson feels very strongly about advocating for sensory and emotionally-inclusive classrooms.
Bryson started That Music Teacher, LLC with the goal of sharing different perspectives on issues pertaining to the lives of music educators across the country. He also hosts That Music Podcast, a podcast for elementary music teachers and is the educator behind the Elementary Music Summit.

I'm always looking for new ideas to use for creative movement in the classroom. There was a video that came across my social media feed of a large group performing choreographed hand movements that were sharp and precise. The performers wore all black clothing and sat in a riser formation. They used their arms and hands to create motions that moved in straight lines, parallel lines, and in canon. This is called tutting.
In today's episode I share the process I have been using to teach my students how to tut. Tutting can be done with the entire body, but we've focused only on the hands and arms. You'll hear how to get started with performing tutting in your classroom, allow students to create movements within the piece, and selecting music to use.

Hailing from Canada’s Capital region, Loop pedal violist, composer, and educator Kathryn Patricia Cobbler has crafted a singular niche in improvisation and classical performance. She obsesses over creating uniquely arresting soundscapes, whether in solo recitals, composing for theatre, performing at art installations, and more. A recipient of one of Ottawa Arts Council’s Emerging Artist awards, she has been featured in Canada’s most notable Concert Series, including Chamberfest, Music and Beyond, NUMUS Music Festival, and the Ottawa New Music Creators’ Analogue Series to name a few.
As a seasoned performer, speaker, presenter and workshop facilitator, Kathryn has given masterclasses at Carleton University and was a speaker for the Canadian Network for Arts and Learning Convergence Conference. As a performing artist and educator, Ms. Cobbler is an artist on the MASC Artist roster and Teaching Artist at the National Arts Centre. As a composer, Kathryn has been featured in the Boston based Concert series, Castle of Our Skin’s Black Composers Miniature Challenge, which resulted in the world premier of her piece A Home Called ‘Wander’. Kathryn continues to be inspired by the next generation of composers and improvisers, having served as an adjudicator for the Canadian Music Showcase and NUMUS Emerging Improvisor competition. Kathryn Patricia’s most recent multidisciplinary collaboration was through an artist in residency with the Ottawa Dance Directive composing and collaborating for the premiere of Dream & True North envisioned and choreographed by Elizabeth Emond-Stevenson.
Initially a visual artist, Kathryn sees the world through shape and line—a vision that has laid the groundwork for many of her musical creative projects. Kathryn’s current explorations of the loop pedal have led to the development of her workshop/concert, Sound In Living Colour, where she draws connection between the technical use of the paint brush and her viola bow, guiding her listeners through a music inspired painting experience. After switching to music as her artistic path, she would receive degrees in viola performance from Western University (B.M.) and the University of Ottawa (M.M.). Ms. Cobbler has also performed as an orchestral musician, appearing within the Toronto Symphony’s Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, and the Ottawa Jazz Orchestra. A native of Windsor, Ontario, she makes her home in Ottawa. She performs on a viola by luthier Sibylle Ruppert and a Boss RC-30 loop pedal.

Jodi Coke, aka The Choir Queen, is hear to share her secrets about creating a successful, joyful, and organized middle school choir. Hint: relationships matter and so does planning! Jodi Coke is a choral director and classical singer in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. She is currently in her ninth year as the head choir director at Hillwood Middle School in Keller ISD and 17th year teaching. Jodi has sung with many professional choirs in the DFW area, including Orpheus Chamber Singers, Dallas Bach Society, and Vox Humana. She has also sung with Conspirare, directed by the renowned Craig Hella Johnson, and is a soloist on the Grammy nominated album, “Threshold of Night.”
Jodi holds a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the University of North Texas in 2006 and Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Southern Methodist University in 2014. She resides in Fort Worth with her husband, Wes, and eight-year-old daughter, Kennedy, who is a pediatric cancer survivor.

Anthony is currently serving as the Board Chair of the Dalcroze Society of America and has been a National Event Presenter on Dalcroze Pedagogy. He is a Carnegie Mellon University teaching artist and has been a public school music educator for over 15 years. Monica Dale grew up on the campus of Connecticut College when it was the epicenter for modern dance as host of the American Dance Festival. As a child, she had experimental creative dance classes and was surrounded with modern art and music. She studied dance at Connecticut College and at the suggestion of faculty, left college for New York City where she trained at the Joffrey, Martha Graham and Cunningham Schools. She later returned to Connecticut and majored in music. Monica pursued Dalcroze Studies to bridge music and dance. She earned her certificate, license and Master of Music in Piano Performance from Ithaca College and has worked professionally as a dancer, pianist, choreographer, and teacher of pre-school through professional levels. After developing an original curriculum merging music, dance and language, Monica founded MusiKinesis, and has published six books including the three-volume Eurythmics for Young Children and an iBook of illustrated dance stories with original music.

Mrs. Amy (Pitts) Knous holds a Master of Music Education with an emphasis in Choral Conducting from Texas Tech University, a magna cum laude undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University in Vocal Music Education, and Kodály certification from the University of Oklahoma. Amy is in her 9th year of teaching, with experience teaching 5th- 12th grade choirs, AP Music Theory, and music appreciation. Currently, Amy directs the 5th- 8th grade choirs and assistant directs the High School choir at Casady School in Oklahoma City. Before Casady, Amy taught at Edmond Sequoyah Middle School, Jenks High School, and Midwest City High School. While in Tulsa, she directed the Tulsa Youth Opera Singing Essentials class. Amy has served as the Junior High Chair of the Central Oklahoma Choral Directors Association, is a member of NAfME (National Association for Music Educators) and ACDA (American Choral Directors Association), and enjoys acting as clinician and adjudicator for choirs. Amy is very passionate about using games to teach music literacy, and presented on that topic at the OkMEA 2021 virtual conference, the 2021 NAfME Eastern Division Conference, and will be presenting at the SWACDA conference this March. In her free time, Amy enjoys gardening, running, taking too many pictures of her cat, and sharing her musical adventures and ideas on her instagram, @kodalyinthemiddle.

Faith Rodgers is a 29 year old mom and elementary music teacher from Dallas, Tx. When her son Steven was 2, he was diagnosed with a severe speech and language delay. Faith tried all the big name phonics companies to help Steven learn, but they all ended in tantrums. Finally one day Faith had the idea to take a hip hop beat and make a letter A rap and Steven loved it! Not only did Steven love it but it went viral. It was on that day that the idea of Phonetic Beats was born. Here we are 3 years later and Faith has completed individual raps for each letter of the alphabet.

Brent Geyer has been teaching in the Westfield Public Schools since 2007 as both a general vocal music teacher for grades 1-5 and a strings specialist. During this time he has directed the All City Orchestra and All City Chorus and also directs the high school Men's Chorus. Brent's 5th grade choirs have sung with the NJ Festival Orchestra and were chosen twice to be aired on NJ 101.5 for their Christmas Choir contest, in which they won first place in 2015. Brent holds both a Bachelors in Music Education and Piano Performance from West Chester University, a Masters in Music Education from the University of the Arts, and completed his Orff levels at Villanova. He is also the creator of the virtual xylophones found on the coding site Scratch.

Beth Duhon is, to borrow Tracy King’s phrase, the K-5 “ambassador of joy” at Travis Elementary in Rosenberg, TX. This is her fifth year teaching in Lamar Consolidated ISD. She has received over $14,000 in classroom grants for a keyboard lab, iPads, and music manipulatives in addition to regularly receiving travel grants for music education conferences. In 2021, she presented “Self-Care for the Music Educator: Not Just a Buzzword” for TMEA and the LCISD elementary music teacher cohort. Previously, Ms. Duhon was a successful horn private lesson teacher, clinician, and freelance performer in the West Houston area for over a decade. She also taught elementary music in Williamsburg, VA and middle school general music in Falls Church, VA before moving to Texas. She was an honors recitalist, principal horn in the wind ensemble and orchestra, cum laude and an inductee of Pi Kappa Lambda from Illinois Wesleyan University where she received a B.M.E. At the University of Houston, Ms. Duhon was a teaching assistant in the music history department, summa cum laude and a student of Roger Kaza (St. Louis Symphony) and Nancy Goodearl (Houston Symphony). She received an M.M. in horn performance. Ms. Duhon met her husband, Jimmy, when they were both performing as instrumentalists at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. They have a ten-year-old son, Mark.

Bio:
Dr. Michelle Margiotta is a composer, arranger, and music educator. Those who have worked alongside her give great acclaim to both her orchestrations and compositions, as well as to Michelle herself. For the past year, Michelle has been orchestrating and arranging The God of the Other Side & The God of the How and When Oratorios, as well as The Shalom Reprise and Overture with Emmy & Tony Award-winning singer/songwriter and producer Kathie Lee Gifford.
For the past eight years, she has traveled with Dove Award-winning and Grammy-nominated artist, Kathy Troccoli, as her full-time piano and guitar accompanist. Michelle has also played events with Christian artists such as Kelly Minter and Laura Story.
Michelle holds a Bachelor’s of Music Education from Lee University in Cleveland, TN, as well as a Master’s in Jazz Composition and Arranging and a D.M.A. in Composition from Five Towns College in NY. She has a strong passion for music education and has taught at the collegiate level for ten years, as well as teaching countless private students. In an effort to make music accessible to an even broader audience, her book, The Language of Music, An Introduction to the Basics of Music Theory was released in 2020. Originally from Long Island, New York, Michelle now resides in Nashville, Tennessee.

Presenter and author, Jen Rafferty began her career as a middle school music teacher in Central New York. Jen brings her energy, humor, and expertise to all professional development workshops. She is known for her practical ideas and passion in her presentations while inspiring teachers to stay connected to their “why.”
She earned a B.M. in music education and vocal performance, a M.M. in music education from Ithaca College and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in educational psychology. In 2020 she founded Sing Together, a national virtual singing community of singers of all ages and abilities. Her most recent publication is A Place in the Staff: Finding Your Way as a Music Teacher.

Jessica Peresta Bio:
Jessica Peresta is passionate about mentoring elementary music teachers. Jessica earned the Top Music Education Major award for her graduating class, and upon earning her Bachelors in Music Education from Oral Roberts University, she started her first teaching position in the middle of the school year at a low income elementary school in Tulsa, OK.
Having few resources and teaching materials, Jessica was asked to restart the music program which had been non-existent for 7 years. Over the next several years, Jessica created her own curriculum map and developed lesson plans that met her students where they were at. During her second year of teaching, she won the Teacher of the Year and Teacher of Today awards.
Jessica started The Domestic Musician website, the HARMONY membership site, as well as The Elementary Music Teacher podcast as a way to help elementary music teachers beat the overwhelm and get back to teaching music with joy.

Bill Henry: Bill Henry has been teaching elementary music for over a decade and recent Teacher of the Year nominee for Cecil County Public Schools. Bill also provides instruction privately and is the creator of the Online Piano Program for Kids called Rockin' the Keys.
Bruce Fite: Award-winning singer/songwriter, author, and podcaster Bruce Fite lives in Nottingham, PA with his beautiful wife and four children. He has been writing music and performing concerts for kids and families for the last 15 years. Bruce writes and performs three main genres of music: Christian Family, Educational, and Parody. His songs are heard weekly on The Kids Cookie Break on 90.3 FM, Lancaster, PA. One of Bruce’s Toilet Paper Hoarding parodies has almost 100,000 views on Facebook. Bruce has been teaching elementary general music for over 20 years. He also tunes pianos and leads the music at his church.
In his spare time, Bruce likes to enjoy the beautiful view from his front porch with a good cup of coffee. Many song ideas have been hatched while Bruce participates in one of his all-time favorite things to do- mowing the grass! It’s actually very therapeutic for him. He also has found a great deal of joy teaching his own children to appreciate and perform music. From singing and drums to piano and ukulele, there’s a whole lot of music happening at the Fite house!

Acclaimed conductor, Robert Franz, recognized as "an outstanding musician with profound intelligence," has held to three principles throughout his career: a commitment to the highest artistic standards, to creating alliances and building bridges in each community he serves, and a dedication to being a strong force in music education. As Music Director of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra and Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival Orchestra, Associate Conductor of the Houston Symphony, and newly appointed Artistic Advisor of the Boise Baroque Orchestra, he has achieved success through his focus on each of these principles.
His appeal as a first-rate conductor and enthusiastic award-winning educator is acclaimed by critics, composers, and audiences of all ages. Composer Bright Sheng praised Franz for his "extremely musical and passionate approach towards music making." Franz is in increasing demand as a guest conductor, whose upcoming and recent engagements include appearances with orchestras in Austin, Buffalo, Fort Worth, Winston-Salem, Reno, and Opera Idaho. Additional recent guest conducting appearances include the Cleveland Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, North Carolina Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, and Italy's Orchestra da Camera Fiorentinas. Franz is equally comfortable and effective coaching more than 50 student orchestras each season. His versatility has led to collaborations with a wide array of artists, including James Galway, Joshua Bell, Rachel Barton Pine, Chris Botti, Idina Menzel, and Judy Collins. An eloquent speaker, Franz recently presented a TEDx Talk entitled Active Listening and Our Perception of Time.
In his eighth season as Music Director with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, Franz was recognized by the Windsor Endowment for the Arts with its Arts Leadership Award. Highlights of the 2019/2020 season include a presentation of Madama Butterfly in concert and Canadian composer Tobin Stokes' Symphony No. 3 'The Piper.' Recent collaborations include the Windsor International Film Festival, Art Gallery of Windsor, Windsor Public Library, Canadian Historical Aviation Association, and the University of Windsor.
Franz serves as Artistic Director of the Boise Baroque Orchestra, which will include collaborations with Opera Idaho in a semi-staged performance of Handel's Acis and Galatea featuring Grammy Award winning tenor, Karim Sulayman, the Boise the High School Chamber Orchestra and the Boise Philharmonic Master Chorale. Under his leadership, the orchestra will undertake its first ever commercial recording project of Classical Oboe Concerti for Centaur Records featuring rising star oboist Bhavani Kotha.
This season Franz celebrates his 13th year as Associate Conductor of the Houston Symphony where he was recently honored as the first member of the orchestra conducting staff with the Raphael Fliegel Award for Visionary Leadership. It was presented to him in recognition of his immense success in advancing the organization's education and community engagement activities.
As Founder and Music Director of the Idaho Orchestra Institute, now in its fourth year, Franz takes young musicians on an exploration of major orchestral repertoire that explores the complete musician.
In addition to his current posts, Franz served as Music Director of the Boise Philharmonic from 2008-2016, and the Mansfield Symphony (OH) from 2003-2010. When not on the podium he can be found on the slopes, skiing slowly and carefully, stretching in a yoga class, and non-competitively trying his hardest to win at a game of cards with his family.

Michael's Bio:
Michael Arterberry is the Executive Director of Youth Voices Center, Inc. and the creator of the Power of Peace Program. Michael began his tenure working with youth by obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Iona College. In founding YVC in 2008, Michael drew heavily on his understanding and empathy for the pressures and difficulties of the teenage years. In addition to his own experiences growing up in poverty, Michael has worked with thousands of teens in a range of settings over the past 24 years as a social worker and counselor. As a teenager, Michael was fortunate to receive guidance from positive adult role models who helped him to overcome adversities and set high expectations for his future. Grateful for the role these mentors played in his own development, Michael decided to dedicate his professional life to helping teenagers navigate the difficult adolescent years.
Michael decided to form YVC while working on the Alternative to Violence Project (AVP) in Green Haven Correctional Facility. Serving as a counselor in AVP, Michael was impressed by the progress of inmates who entered the program with plenty of hesitation and resistance and left the program raving about how much it transformed their perception of themselves and others. Realizing the power of this type of experiential program, Michael founded YVC and launched the Power of Peace program to transform the lives of youth.
In 2010, Michael was selected out of hundreds of nominees to receive a USA Network Characters Unite Award, given to individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to combating prejudice and discrimination while increasing tolerance and acceptance within their community.
In 2014, he was the recipient of the 100 Men of Color Award for leadership in education, government, mentorship, entrepreneurial success and community service. And most recently, he was awarded the EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD from Y-COP, the Youth Community Outreach Program in Mt. Vernon at the First Annual Dinner Dance on September 29th, 2016.
Michael is also the subject of his wife’s first religion based, spirituality book, “God Was Holding My Hand,” in which Rachel Arterberry chronicles his journey of coming to know the Lord. Spanning from his tumultuous childhood, to a college football injury that turned into spinal cord surgery, Michael becomes self aware that God was holding his hand each step of the way.

Dr. Carol Krueger Bio:
Dr. Krueger formerly served as the Director of Choral Activities at Valdosta State University, Emporia State University, and Florida Southern. She also served as the Associate Director of Choral Activities at the University of South Carolina and the University of Montevallo. A native of Wisconsin, Krueger received her bachelor's degree in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and both an M.M. and D.M.A. in Choral Conducting from the University of Miami.
An active clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor, Krueger has most recently conducted festivals and honor choirs at the collegiate, high school and middle school levels in Maryland, Arkansas, South Dakota, North Carolina, Virginia, Wisconsin, Kansas, New York, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Washington, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Dakota. In addition, Dr. Krueger served as the guest conductor of Vivaldi’s Gloria in Carnegie Hall (2010), the Adult Chancel Choir and Chamber Singers at Montreat Presbyterian Association of Musicians Conference (2010), and multiple performances of Epcot’s Candlelight Processional and Massed Choir Program (2005).
Krueger has presented interest sessions at the American Choral Directors National Convention in New York, the OAKE (Kodaly) National Convention in Charlotte, the ACDA Southern Division Conventions in Nashville and Louisville, the Southern Division MENC Convention in Charleston, the North Central Division ACDA in Madison, the Eastern Division ACDA in Providence, the Eastern Division NAfME in Hartford, as well as interest sessions or workshops in twenty-seven states (Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, and West Virginia [2019]). Krueger is also widely recognized for her work with music literacy. Oxford University Press publishes her book, Progressive Sight Singing.

Danielle E. Larrick is a musician-educator in her 13th year of teaching who believes in the value of middle school music as a means of identity, expression, and connection. She focuses on designing practical, innovative, and engaging music curricula for middle school students.
Danielle received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education, with a concentration in Voice, from Temple University. Upon graduation, she served as the K-8 music teacher in an urban Philadelphia Charter School for two years. During this time she formed an after-school vocal ensemble and worked with local non-profits, such as Musicopia, to provide additional musical experiences for her students.
She currently teaches at Gerald Huesken Middle School, where she directs the 7th and 8th grade choirs and teaches general music. In 2016, she earned a Master of Music in Music Education from The University of the Arts. Motivated by the ever-changing trends in education and a desire to meet the various needs of her students, Danielle continues to further her learning through courses and trainings. She has completed training in the hybrid/rotational model, which she utilizes within her general music classes. Danielle has a passion for working with pre-service and new teachers. She currently serves on the PMEA Mentorship Committee. She has also published an e-book and resources with F-flat books.

She is currently the Director of Fine Arts for the Plano Independent School District, a school system of approximately 53,000 students with Kodály specialists in all 44 elementary schools and award winning band, choir, orchestra & music theory programs. She is the Founder and Coordinator of the Plano Kodály Teacher Training Program, and Folk Music Materials Instructor for the companion training program at Southern Methodist University. Kristin Vogt is the music specialist at Brinker Elementary School in Plano ISD, where she teaches Kindergarten through 5th grade students. Kristin received her Bachelor of Music in Music Theory in 2000, and masters degrees in music theory and music education from Southern Methodist University in 2003. She earned her Kodály certification from the Plano ISD/UNT program and her Orff Schulwerk certification from SMU. This is her 17th year to teach elementary music. She presents professional development sessions for school districts in Texas and the OAKE National Conference in 2010 and 2018, AOSA in 2016.. Kristin also is the Past President on the executive board for Kodály Educators of Texas. She has 2 sons, a freshman in high school and a 6th grader, avid runner and an adjunct professor at Texas A&M – Commerce.

Chris Judah-Lauder Bio:
Chris Judah Lauder, a Past President of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association, served as the 2017 AOSA National Conference Chair in Fort Worth, Texas, 2009 AOSA National Conference Chair in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 1995 AOSA Local Conference Chair, and is currently serving as an AOSA mentor. She earned her Masters Degree in Music Education at Indiana University in South Bend, received her Orff Schulwerk certification at University of Illinois University, Urbana-Champaign and completed an Orff Master Class with Richard Gill. She has forty years of experience teaching music, movement, recorder, singing and drumming to K-8th grade students in public, private and independent schools. She was the Fine Arts Coordinator for Good Shepherd Episcopal School in Dallas, TX and co-wrote the Music Curriculum for GSES and the Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, Indiana. Chris’ Orff Ensemble was selected to perform for the Opening Ceremony for the 1995 American Orff-Schulwerk Association National Conference.
Her Orff, Recorder and Drum Ensembles were also invited to perform under her direction for the Texas Music Educators Conferences in 2000, 2003, 2007, and her Drum group performed for PASIC in 2000. Her middle school students recorded a CD titled Select Beats in the Charlie Pride Recording Studio.
She has taught Orff Schulwerk certification courses to adults at fourteen universities over the past thirty years, presented over 200 conference sessions and workshops at national conferences, state music educator’s associations, school districts, and Orff chapters throughout the US, Canada, China, South Korea. She is currently serving as a Music Consultant for Title One schools in Texas, working directly in the classroom with the music teacher.

Dr. Martina Vasil is assistant professor of music education and director of the Modern Band, Orff Schulwerk, and Dalcroze Summer Institute at the University of Kentucky (UK). She teaches collegiate courses in general music, popular music education, and qualitative research and continues to teach preK–6 music at Lexington Montessori School. She is Orff Level III and Dalcroze Level II certified. Martina was a member of the inaugural Modern Band Higher Education Fellowship and has brought Modern Band training to teachers locally and internationally (Liberia). Martina’s research centers on popular music education, Orff Schulwerk, and music teacher education. She has published in the International Journal of Music Education, the Journal of Music Teacher Education, UPDATE: Applications of Research in Music Education, and the Orff Echo. She recently published a book chapter, “Popular Music Education and Orff Schulwerk”, in the Bloomsbury Handbook of Popular Music Education (2019).

Bio:
Walt Hampton received his teaching certificate as well as Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in Percussion Performance from Central Washington University. He has served as Principal Percussionist or Timpanist with numerous symphony orchestras, and he frequently performs on drum set, providing backup for several notable jazz artists who tour the Northwest. He is also a frequent performer on the guitar and bass, and an active composer.
Walt has presented clinics and workshops on three continents, as well as national, regional, and state conventions for AOSA and MENC. He frequently tours and performs with his student marimba bands, Rugare (elementary age), ‘Baduku (middle-school age) and ‘Bahuru (high-school age) performing a variety of styles, including Zimbabwean-flavored marimba music from his books, Hot Marimba!, Marimba Mojo! and Son of Hot Marimba. Walt teaches K-5 General music at White Bluffs Elementary School in Richland, Washington, and has more than a quarter-century of public school teaching experience. Walt has received several awards for his teaching, including the Washington State Excellence in Education Award.

Kathy Liperote is Assistant Professor of Music Education at the Eastman School of Music, where she teaches methods classes, observes student teachers, and supervises graduate teaching assistants. Her teaching and research focus on the music learning process, connecting aural skills to instrumental performance, and developing musicianship skills for elementary and secondary level teaching. Dr. Liperote has presented at state and regional NAfME conferences, and conducted professional development workshops most recently at Temple University, Baldwin Wallace University, and the Fort Worth Independent School District. She is also on the Instrumental Certification Faculty for the Gordon Institute for Music Learning. Prior to receiving the PhD in Music Education from the Eastman School, Dr. Liperote taught instrumental music for 15 years in the Baldwinsville and West Genesee School Districts in Central New York State. She is a graduate of the Crane School of Music and Syracuse University.

Creative Miracles Book
Kelly Surette is the author of the book Creative Miracles: A Practitioner’s Guide to Adaptive Music Instruction. Additionally, Kelly is an adaptive music instructor, performer, and composer living in The New England area. Kelly attended The Boston Conservatory as a musical theater major and received her Bachelor of Arts in Theater from Merrimack College. Kelly holds her Masters in Science in Music Industry Leadership from Northeastern University with a concentration in Entrepreneurship (selected RISE participant – Research, Innovation, and Scholarships Expo.) Kelly currently works as an adaptive music instructor at The Children’s Center for Communication and The Beverly School for the Deaf. Prior to working at CCCBSD, Kelly was the Executive Director of Amplifi Adaptive Music Programs, an organization that provided adaptive music programming for those with developmental, physical, and intellectual disabilities. Kelly was also a voice, piano, and musical theater teacher for many years at several local music schools including The Music Academy of Chelmsford, The Real School of Music, and Performing Arts Programs.
Kelly has performed in many musical theater productions in New England at theaters such as Marblehead Little Theater, the Roger’s Center for the Arts, Ivoryton Playhouse, Hartford Stage Company, and Emelin Theater. Kelly is the composer of the musical Miles to Amelia (a 2013 NYMF candidate), Given The Musical, and Never Saw Gray Like This Before (winner of the Merrimack College Award for Social Justice, The Campus Catalyst Grant, and for this work Kelly was a nominated member of the Women’s Leadership Seminar.) Kelly is a proud graduate of The Greater Hartford Academy of the Performing Arts.
Kelly lives in Groveland, Massachusetts with her husband, Kristopher, and their two beautiful daughters, Brielle and Chelsea.

We often associate singing with Kodály and instruments with Orff, but there's so much more to both approaches and wonderful ways to integrate them together in the classroom. I'll be sharing three ways that I enjoy merging these two approaches together to bring students opportunities to experience structure of musical concepts with improvisation and composition, blending folk dancing with laban movement and body percussion, and incorporating singing with instruments.

While I know that Zoltan Kodály may have not have been the educator who created the lesson sequence I use or the idea of transitioning from one folk song to another, my Kodály training provided me with more information on how to use the materials that I teach and what to do with them.
Kodály was the inspiration for indexing songs because he dictated the song material of his culture and collected the musical pieces. For this I'm grateful because I have the knowledge of WHY we should create a song index and the value that it provides. And why dictating the songs into master copies helps me to understand the meaning behind them and the concepts that can be taught within them.

RaeAnna Goss is here to share with us about how we can make classical music and composers relevant to students, why it’s important for students to study about this area of music, and share with us about her new resource called the Composer Study Companion.
RaeAnna Goss is a second generation homeschooler and has been involved in music education since an early teenager. She began as a piano teacher to neighborhood children and then served as assistant director in the homeschool band which developed a passion for sharing music with others. Taking that passion further, she studied music education at Lee University and after graduating college, spent 10 years in the public schools, led workshops for music teachers, and also served as president for her local Orff-Schulwerk association. Since having children, she has been teaching early childhood music classes, mother and baby music classes, homeschool music classes, and piano lessons. She loves sharing with fellow moms and teachers!

Finding ways to make room for self-care during the school year can help you value yourself - how you think and feel - and value your time as a result.

Lauren Bain will be sharing about how we can work with our young kindergarten students using the Kodály approach and we’ll talk through a lesson example of using the comparatives of high and low.
Lauren Bain teaches K-5 elementary music at Carl Schurz Elementary in New Braunfels. She earned a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Music Education from Trinity University in San Antonio. She also holds a Master of Arts in Teaching from Trinity University. Lauren received her Kodály certification from Texas State University, and her Orff-Schulwerk certification from Trinity University. She was named the New Braunfels ISD District Elementary Teacher of the Year in 2018, TEA’s Region 13 Elementary Teacher of the Year in 2019, and was a finalist for the HEB Excellence in Education Award in 2019.
She has served on music curriculum writing committees for both North East ISD and New Braunfels ISD. During her first 5 years in New Braunfels ISD, she field-tested kindergarten music curriculum for the latest publication in cognition and music education research by Oxford University Press entitled Kodály in the Kindergarten Classroom by Dr. Micheál Houlahan and Dr. Philip Tacka.
Lauren served as the Vice President for the Kodály Educators of Texas (2011-2016), and is currently the President. She has presented at OAKE and AOSA national conferences, TMEA, and the 2014 CEDFA Summit, as well as workshops in central and south Texas since 2009. One of the most influential and brilliant educators that I've had the privilege of learning from is Lane Harder. He is the professor of composition and music theory at Southern Methodist University, as well as being a percussionist and composer. In this episode you'll hear about his musical experiences with composition and the composition process.
Lane Harder is a professor at SMU, percussionist, and composer. He has earned degrees from Southern Methodist University, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Texas. He completed a year of resident study at Kings College in London and earned three certificat de stage from EAMA (European American Musical Alliance Summer Program in Paris, France. His works have been performed by the Meadows Symphony Orchestra, Peabody Opera Theatre, Bachanalia Chamber Orchestra, Percussion Group 72 (Japan), Ju Percussion Group (Taiwan), The University of Texas New Music Ensemble, and many other artists in North America, Europe, and Asia. His original music and transcriptions are published by Universal Edition, KPP, Rassel Editions of New York, and Alternate Chords. He is a member of ASCAP.

Darla Meek is the Music Education Coordinator and Lecturer at Texas A&M University in Commerce. She teaches undergraduate and graduate elementary music education classes and supervises student teachers. She earned her Bachelor of Music Education from Dallas Baptist University and her Master of Music from Southern Methodist University. Darla also earned a Performer’s Certificate from the Performing Artist’s Musical Theatre Conservatory in Dallas. She is currently working toward her Doctor of Education in Supervision, Curriculum, and Instruction.
Darla is certified in Kodaly and Orff Schulwerk and serves as a teacher trainer for the American Orff Schulwerk Association in both Basic Pedagogy Level I and Movement for Orff Levels Courses. She has served as assistant conductor for the Mesquite Children’s Chorus and the Children’s Chorus of Collin County and has served as Children’s Choir Coordinator for 3 churches in the Dallas area.
Darla has written children’s choir curricula for LIfeway Christian Resources and Celebrating Grace Inc. Her recorder method books Journey Around the Globe with Recorder and Flight 2: Another Journey Around the Globe With Recorder were published by Sweet Pipes, Inc. What exactly is elemental music? What does it look like within the Orff Schulwerk Approach? And how can we use art to create musical experiences for students? Drue Bullington will be sharing about these three topics in this episode.
Drue Bullington teaches elemental music and movement at Brownstown Elementary School in the Conestoga Valley School District in Lancaster, PA. He earned his Bachelor in Music Education and Masters of Music of Music in Music Education with a certification in Orff Schulwerk from West Chester University of Pennsylvania. He holds a second Master’s Degree in Online Teaching and Learning from Wilkes University. Drue serves on the executive board as secretary for the American Center for Elemental Music and Movement (ACEMM). He is a Teacher Educator in a number of AOSA Orff Schulwerk Levels around the country.

This has been one of my favorite interviews so far because I was able to talk with the Head of Good Shepherd Episcopal School, Dr. Julie McLeod. Dr. McLeod is my administrator and I value her insight. I enjoyed hearing all that she had to share. We talk about music education advocacy, how we can build a strong relationship with our administration, and other areas that make a difference in our school.
Dr. Julie McLeod earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Oklahoma State University, her Master of Arts in Educational Technology Leadership from George Washington University, and her Doctor of Philosophy from The University of North Texas. Her experience in schools includes time as a 6th grade math teacher, technology partner, and Director of technology in public and private schools, as well as adjunct professor positions at George Washington University, Texas A&M Commerce, and the University of North Texas. She is the Head of School at Good Shepherd Episcopal School in Dallas, Texas. She is married to her husband Malcolm and has two sons, Thomas and Kirby.

Georgia Newlin shares a wealth of information about the Kodály approach and developing part-singing skills with your students. I loved getting to hear her thoughts on the part-singing modules and how we can continue to keep ourselves curious and challenged as educators.
Georgia A Newlin is an independent Music Education Consultant. She has taught in early childhood and public school music positions for fifteen years and at the collegiate level for sixteen. Currently, Georgia is called upon as a conductor for choral festivals, as a clinician for choral workshops, reading sessions, and intermediate grade methodology, as well as a consultant for curriculum planning. She teaches musicianship, conducting, and ensemble in Kodály programs at Indiana University, University of Hawai’i, and James Madison University.
Georgia is Past President of the Organization of American Kodály Educators and is a member of The VoiceCare Network. She has been a presenter for numerous music associations and conferences at local, state, national and international levels. She has had articles published in the Choral Journal, Orff Echo, Kodály Envoy, and Southwestern Musician, among others. She served for three years on the Music Educators Journal Advisory Committee for the National Association for Music Education.
Music Is Elementary has published her book, One Accord: Developing Part-Singing Skills in School-Age Musicians, as well as her lesson plans for teaching music literacy through choral singing in The Crooked River Choral Project. Georgia is also published with the Ruth Dwyer Choral Series from Colla Voce. Georgia holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Pedagogy from the Hartt School at the University of Hartford, a Master of Music in Music Education with Kodály Emphasis from Holy Names University, and a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from West Chester University. She considers herself most fortunate in that, through her vocation, she has spent her life making music with others.

Becca Buck began collecting authentic folk song material used in the homes of her students and has seen a huge impact in the way that her classroom has grown into a place of relevance, meaning and music making. You'll hear why she began the project, the difference it has made, and what she has learned as an educator.
Becca Buck is the K-5th grade music teacher at M.W. Savage and Gideon Pond Elementary Schools in the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School district in Minnesota. She is in her 7th year teaching and just finished up her Master’s degree work this past summer at the University of St. Thomas, which is where she also did her undergrad work. She recently presented at the Minnesota Music Educator’s Association conference on her Master’s project: “A Culturally Relevant Kodaly Inspired Classroom” with her friend Qorsho Hassan. The project she presented about is what she would love to share about today.
