I overheard some teachers talking in a coffee shop a while ago...and I while I sat listening to them...offended...I also thought about how we (meaning you...and me!) can persuade them to think a little deeper.
So today on the podcast, it's a bit different-because it's story telling time! Both in how staff learns behavior management (-or not-), and my own story of creating some change with a kiddo with "behaviors."

Other Health Impairment, otherwise known as OHI, is a difficult category to explain, especially because it tends to be a “catch all” category for any student experiencing lack of endurance (aka fatigue) or attention concerns (aka ADHD like symptoms).

You would think that if your child has an IEP, you wouldn't need to know what a 504 is, but that belief is false! If you are new to this entire process, then you need to listen, too! And did you know...your child can have a 504 and an IEP at the same time for different reasons??
This is an incredibly frequent question-because teams, just like the IEP process, don't clearly explain 504's in a clear, parent-friendly way. 504's are used as "consolation prizes" sometimes-but there is a whole lotta value in getting one for your child.

OK-so you have an "eval" coming up. Initial eligibility, re-evaluation, or a triannual review. If that sounds confusing already you need this episode! Who is this case manager person, and what do they actually do? Do I have any control over who I get, and what happens if they aren't helping me advocate for my kid?
Case managers are super important in the IEP process, as they can make your job as a parent advocate so much easier, or so much harder.
Don't know if you have a "good" case manager or a "bad" one? We go through that as well. You'll have to listen to find out!
Before I get into these amazing tips and stories from parents and parent-friendly professionals alike, we need to back up a sec.
We need to talk about how the IEP (Individualized Education Plan) came to be and why it's the best vehicle to advocate for your child with a disability. We need to go over what IDEA is and what the intention was, the update in 2004 and how it raised the inclusion bar, and why it's the best way to advocate from a legal and timing perspective!
