This episode we dive into the time honored tradition of the Spur Ride and how CSM Brian Robert from 8th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment organized a memorable experience for his soldiers as they went down to Camp Rilea Oregon to join the Order of the Spur.
Joining him today is Pfc Joshua Nugent who earned his spurs at Camp Rilea. Nugent discusses his mindset as he and his squad were pushed mentally and physically on the beaches of Oregon.
The tradition of earning your spurs was introduced during the formation of the American Cavalry. New troopers were given extra space to ride and training spurs so as not to cause accidents in formations. Only when these troopers were able to prove their ability to perform with their horse and saber were they awarded their real spurs.

Brigade Commander Col. Roehrman sits down with Lancer Brigade's own Staff Sgt. Kaipo Heath, assigned to 1st Battalion, 17th Infanty Regiment "Buffaloes", and Cpl. Brian Hubler, assigned to 14th Brigade Engineer Battalion "Rugged", to discuss their roles and achievements at the National Training Center at Ft. Irwin.
Heath responded to an enemy ambush by using his gun teams to establish a base of fire, then he and another soldier maneuvered onto an enemy tank and tossed a simulated grenade inside.
Hubler and his team broke a NTC record by flying Unmanned Aircraft Systems for a total of 274 hours of flight. Through these efforts the brigade was able to locate, identify, and destroy enemy heavy armor using artillery and Apache helicopters.
Sgt. Amro Elgeziry, a unit supply specialist, and his wife Sgt. Isabella Isaksen, are both Olympians that compete in the modern pentathlon in the Army’s World Class Athlete program (WCAP).
At age 34, Elgeziry will make his fourth appearance at the Olympics and his first time representing Team U.S.A. Elgeziry’s previous appearances has been for his native country of Egypt in 2008, 2012, and 2016.
Isaksen is a Multiple Launch Rocket System Crewmember for the Army and became an Olympian in 2016 competing in the modern pentathlon along with her sister Margaux in Rio de Janeiro.
During this conversation, they reveal how they utilize principles from the Army's Holistic Health and Fitness H2F program to keep their minds and bodies ready for high level competition and training that both the Olympics and the Army demand.

Col Chung sits down with COL (R) Ostlund. COL Ostlund is the former battalion commander of Task Force Rock, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade. The most decorated unit in the war on terror. Six hours into a 425-day tour in an area partially dubbed both the Valley of Death and the Valley of Fire, the battalion lost its first Soldier.
Ostlund started his career as an 18 year old Soldier in the Ranger Regiment and finished as the director of military instruction at Westpoint.
Following a successful 26 year Army career that included both officer and enlisted time. Col. Ostlund now works as the Global Security Manager for YouTube and Google.
Karl Marlantes is a critically acclaimed author of Matterhorn, What It Is Like To Go To War, and Deep River. All of his works were inspired by his service in the Vietnam War as the platoon commander of 1st Battalion, 4th Marines where he heroically lead an assault on a hilltop bunker complex, earning the Navy Cross.
Dr. Colleen Hacker is currently a professor of Kinesiology at Pacific Lutheran University right here in Tacoma, WA. She has had a long professional career, to include being a six time member of the Olympic Games Coaching Staff.
In addition to this list of accomplishments, she has received numerous recognition for her research in sports psychology and mental training. Dr. Hacker has conducted extensive research in the field of sports psychology with particular emphasis on peak performance, team building, leadership mental toughness and psychological skills.
Lieutenant General Michael S. Tucker is a retired United States Army general who served Commanding General of the First United States Army from 2013 until 2016. He formerly served as the Commanding General of the 2nd Infantry Division.
General Tucker enlisted in the Army and eventually served at the highest level as a General Officer. He served in the Gulf War, the Iraq War and the War in Afghanistan. General Tucker's wisdom and commitment to the troops is without question.

Mr. Lutz has served in a variety of Law Enforcement capacities for over 20 years, but takes great pride in his time with New York's premier Emergency Service unit. Mr. Lutz recounts his first hand accounts of bravery, loss, and acceptance in the face of overwhelming tragedy on September 11th 2001.

Lancer Brigade Commander Col. Chung sits down with Medal of Honor Recipient MSG (R) Leroy Petry. Chung and Petry take some time to reminisce about their time in Ranger Regiment, the importance of proper inventory accountability and the mission that Leroy Petry has now in supporting his fellow Soldiers. He may describe himself as a common man who did an uncommon thing, but at Lancer Brigade we believe he is far from Common. Petry became the second recent living recipient of the medal for the war in Afghanistan in 2011 when he received the award from U.S. President Barack Obama.
