Frustrated, confused or irritated by bicyclist behaviors on the streets of Colorado Springs? Why did they just blow the stop sign? How do I pass on a single lane road with a bicyclist on one side and a double line on the other? Why do they ride in the streets when they have perfectly good trails to use?

We talk with a Colorado Springs Police Officer and local cycling advocates to understand the rules and rights of motorists and cyclists on the roads in Colorado. It’s all in the interest of safety for bicyclists, motorists and pedestrians alike.

Host: Torie Giffin, Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort Owner https://www.bicycleresort.com/

Additional Notes:

1) The Safety Stop (SS) is an option for bicyclists---not a requirement. It's about safety and allowing cyclists to get through an intersection faster so that crash risk is minimized, since intersections are the most dangerous road infrastructure for people on bicycles. Young riders under the age of 15 may perform the SS but MUST have a parent or legal guardian accompany them.

2) Sharrows simply indicate and remind motorists to expect bicyclists on the roadway. They do not delineate where the bicyclist should ride but merely communicate with motorists to expect bicyclists taking the lane. As Allen mentioned, sharrows have been shown to not be effective Source: https://www.peopleforbikes.org/news/we-were-wrong-about-sharrows

3) CDOT and Bicycle Colorado both tell us that bicyclists in Colorado have all the rights and responsibilities applicable to the driver of any other vehicle. This means that bicyclists are treated as motor vehicles in Colorado. https://www.codot.gov/programs/bikeped/information-for-bicyclists/bicycling-manual

Passion, perseverance and a genuine heart for people drive this locally owned bike shop in the downtown Ivywild neighborhood. It’s the only veteran owned bike shop in Colorado Springs. Todd Hood, a retired, 20-year Army combat veteran has owned the shop since 2013 and when you come to his shop you feel like family. You can even sit at the bar over a Bristol beer and watch their top-notch and friendly mechanics work on your bike.

It’s also home to Carl the Cat and he even has his own branded merch. While they sell and service a variety of bikes and cater to all types of cyclists from hardcore mountain bikers to families, they’re primarily a mountain bike shop carrying brands including Yeti Cycles, Specialized, Norco and Intense. This winter they’re also getting into ski bike & board rentals and sales.

They call themselves a drinking club with a cycling problem, and while they may enjoy gathering for beers post ride, the Manitou Spokes is a club full of heart and a passion for their Manitou Springs community and fellow cyclists.

The club began in 2009 and meets Tuesdays at 5pm from the start of daylight savings in May to the end in October, the Manitou Spokes offers 3 ride options each week: a Flat & Friendly Road Ride, a Hot & Hilly Road Ride and a Mountain Bike Ride, the Trail Trekkers. Following the rides, they rejoin to drink and dine together and support a different local brewery or bar.

While you might find photos on Facebook, this group is only social in person, there is no website. The main way to connect with the Manitou Spokes is by showing up and getting on their email list. They meet from the back of the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month and an alternate location (disclosed in the club email) on 1st and 5th Tuesdays.

It was a lively multi-generational gathering of guests for our interview and very representative of the variety of ages and abilities in the club. We enjoyed sipping some great Colorado local beer during the show as is fitting with the club, although one rider pointed out you don’t have to drink to fit in. Find out more about the Manitou Spokes Cycling Club in this, our 30th Pedal the Springs Podcast.

Colorado Springs is a bucket list destination for mountain biking, most especially due to the variety of trails, terrains, views, and accessibility, but it has been community support through local trail building non-profits that has been key to maintaining and growing it and making it so great. But there was still a need for more advanced trail advocacy and building and now thanks to the Colorado Springs Mountain Biking Association, it's getting even better.

The organization, formed just two years ago, has fast become a force in helping to speed up the process for creating and improving trails and connections - not just for advanced mountain bikers but all levels of users. In this podcast, host Torie Giffin talks with the Executive Director, board and members of COSMBA about the exciting work they've been doing and what's coming up next.

It’s the oldest independently-owned bike shop in Colorado Springs, with a history of not just providing great service, sales and rider support for over 52 years, but of contributing to the community with impacts that reach far beyond the cycling world, to make this city a better place to live for everyone.

In this edition of Pedal the Springs, meet Tony, the owner of Ted’s Bicycles, and find out more about the shop’s history and the many activities and events he has initiated and supported throughout the years, from repairing bicycles for an annual Christmas giveaway to those less fortunate, to helping launch one of the most iconic area events, the Starlight Spectacular, that funds our local trails and open spaces, to providing more than 300 bike racks throughout our entire community. It’s a special heartfelt show and tribute that highlights how much one shop and man can make a difference.

At the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort you can ride for free with locals, get to know local trails and have the camaraderie of joining our team for a post ride gathering and drinks at the lodge after. Our first ride is free, then, just $20 a year gets you membership for unlimited rides throughout the year. They call it “The Course that Cannot Be Defeated,” an “Elevation Celebration” and a “Festival of Never-ending Ascending.” Learn all about it in this episode.

If you’re looking for a true Colorado challenge to test yourself against the climbs and altitude of Colorado look no further. The 719 Ride, in its 7th year of operation, has something for everyone. You can ride all or part of the route, fat, skinny, mtb, ebike or even a penny farthing. It’s also a great event for spectators like our own “Giro d’Italia” or “Tour de France.” The route is 5 laps, each lap covering about 14 miles of neighborhood roads.

The full 719 Ride or “l Cinque Giri” is 71.9 miles and one of the toughest single-day climbing challenges in the state. The 719 comes from our area code and takes place on July 16, 2022. There is a choice of distances from a 14-mile challenge to the full 71.9 and even further. The course has one timed section with monetary prizes. There are three tiers of registration from an economy option to a community minded option to donate to local charities. For lowest pricing register by June 1st at 719Ride.com. To volunteer email: 719@719ride.com

SRAM and RockShox. Chances are you know these names because you’ve seen them on your bike. But SRAM, the parent company for brands like RockShox, Truvativ, Zipp, Quarq, Time and Hammerhead, is much more than a company that builds bike parts; they’re community builders. Find out more about their efforts to build up the cycling community in Colorado Springs and around the world through their SRAM Field Guide program, in this conversation.

Global bike part manufacturing company SRAM began in 1987 and was named after founders Scott King, Stan Ray Day & Sam Patterson. Their Vision Statement is “We believe in the power of bicycles in expanding the potential of cycling. We create manufactured components and inspire cyclists.” The position of SRAM Field Guide was created to provide community representatives to help them fulfill their mission and to make an impact for cycling in the communities where they reside. There are currently 13 of 31 of the SRAM Field Guide positions filled, with opportunities open in the midwest, northeast and across the globe.

Host: Torie Giffin, owner of the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort, ride leader and ambassador for cycling in Colorado Springs

Guests:
