The Hunting Dog Podcast is a series of interviews with friends, family and industry professionals all related to the world of hunting with dogs. Expect minimal good information, lots of stories of past hunts and opinions that are not necessarily those of the management.
Dove hunting is the traditional kickoff for wingshooters everywhere. This year, I'm swinging west of the Mississippi to keep the dogs happy and the barrels hot.
If you have hunted the ruffed grouse or woodcock, or if you ever plan to, this episode is for you! RGS and AWS are swinging the axe of conservation. Ben Jones and Mark Hatfield give us some updates and news from the front lines of habitat.

It's been awhile since I have had Ed on the show. He is the CEO of The Wildlife Society and as a Certified Wildlife Biologist he knows stuff that usually scares me a bit, but we can find an Upland silver lining if we try!
Gabe and Zach from RGS AWS jump on this episode to talk about a first of it's kind event, and a first of a kind hunt. Conservation doesn't sleep, and neither does the Ruffed Grouse and American Woodcock Society when it comes to fighting for every acre to produce great Habitat

This old episode was the start of many that introduced you to Michigan's best known dog trainer. It was in hindsight the jumping off point of what would become The Upland Institute. In the following weeks I will be sprinkling in some of best episodes that we recorded.
Alberto and Adrian fill us in on the growing pack and the growing family! Training, testing, planning trips and learning to change diapers.
Everybody has a Dad, and everyone owes them a little something. Here is a story about my Dad.
Everybody has a Dad, and everyone owes them a little something. Here is a story about my Dad.
Lynndee Galey of Firelight Setters joins me in a great conversation about a breed that wears many hats. She has a long history in the Setter world. Starting with Irish Setters, then Gordon Setters and now for the past thirty years, English Setters. Lynndee shares her knowledge, experience and wisdom on this episode.
Fritz Heller stopped into the Studio/ kennel to give me updates on acquiring two dogs that are 3 weeks apart in age and miles apart in style. Definitely a challenge, but doable! We also review last season in the Michigan grouse woods and the future of it.
Larry Ressler grew up in North Dakota about the same time I grew up in Illinois. We both had parents that did not hunt, but still found the path to the Uplands. We chat about the many dogs Larry has had, and the next one he is looking for.
I went the the Second Chance Bird fun trial and it lived up to the title.....FUN. What do you get when you have a kitchen table, a microphone and some time to kill before a banquet? You rekindle old friendships and make new ones!!!
Holly Heyser had almost twenty years of hunting under her belt before she got her first dog. She did the research, and pulled a winning ticket out of the whelping box!
Karen and I go way back.... really way back. We cover the basics of K9 health, advise in the field and why we still love Wirehairs.
Karl Gunzer joins me to talk about the many facets of what it takes to fuel our dogs and support our lifestyle. We chat about everything from labs to pointing dogs and even a segment on sheep dog trials.
Mike Mapes started Second Chance Bird Dogs a few years back. His passion for bird dogs, especially those that get turned into shelters or rehomed over and over, was the catalyst for starting this. Mike has a full kennel year round, of dogs finding new homes and a waiting list of people looking for their next dog.
Jennifer jumped in to talk dogs, training, trialing and her newest passion project. Gnaw and Order. along with her last three months in GA/FL working her dogs.
Carroll Kemp and Pete Aplikowski join us to talk about the History, Talents and Temperament of one of the country's most popular bird dogs-the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. Korthals Griffon is the historic name of this breed, and Korthals Griffon United States is a conservation society for Griffons in the USA and their UKC National Breed Club.
Casey Ressler is a fifth generation North Dakotan. He has noticed Cultural/Ecological/Economical impacts that have changed over the last 10-15 years in ND. We talk access, permission and policy along with dogs and my favorite bird.
I have followed Charlie Thorburn for quite some time. His You Tube Channel is Mordor Gundogs. His style is straightforward and he is not afraid to ruffle some feathers. But the proof as they say is in the pudding, or possibly in the United Kingdom.
Andy Blumberg introduces CHOWIE! The next generation of hunters will thank him for years to come. Living and hunting out west, Andy made sure his Wirehaired Griffon was avoidance trained for snakes, skunks and porkies, but his dog Ada added one more critter to the list. A Big critter!!
Brent Pike came over to talk about what's new and whats needed to make the next trip just a bit more successful. Sometimes it's the place, sometimes it's the people and sometimes it's the gear.
Kate Ahnstrom joins me to tell about her journey. Most people get the dog first and then figure it out. Kate reversed engineered the process. She is an incredible women who just can't say no......

Jared Wickland of PF&QF joins me to recap the season and celebrate the event we all look forward to.
I first met Ben at my place in Virginia. We shared a drink, a bunch of stories and stayed in touch over many years. Ben and a few friends have figured out that Virginia is a true mixed bag of opportunities for anyone wanting to chase upland birds. As long as you don't mind going up hill both ways. This episode brings me back to the reason love this lifestyle.
My buddy Dave Utzinger came over to show me some late season videos of his young lab. We talk and brag a bit about "not doing much training" and relying on natural instincts and cooperation. Or maybe were just getting luckier when we get new dogs??? Who knows?
Within 24 hours, two people I consider friends, passed away. Larry Lawton and Glen Blackwood were as different as night and day, yet cut out of the same cloth. Sadly I never recorded Larry's voice over the years. Glen on the other hand has been on a few episodes. I picked this one to re broadcast.
Ohio Highway Patrolman Jake Lawrence joins me to discuss the similarities between police dogs and our dogs. As it turns out, there is not much difference when it come right down to it.
On a Antarctic expedition in 1958 a team of sled dogs were left behind. It is a sad tale, but it says what dogs can really do to survive in spite of odds.
Laura Reeves is a fellow podcaster who can walk the walk and talk the talk on breeding dogs. If you ever thought of breeding your dog, or already have a few litters under your name, you will glean something for this episode. If you are looking for your first or next dog, this will educate you on what separates breeding programs from breeders.
It, seems every year that goes by, Gunner launches a new product that only your dog can appreciate. But thats OK your dog deserves the best! Addison Edmonds has a vision of quality for anything with his name on it. In some cases it takes years and years to refine. The new vest is finally out and it was worth the wait.
If it were not for these dedicated organizations, we would have fewer birds and fewer places to chase them. From the eastern forests to the western prairies, RGS PF and NAGP work together on our behalf. Listen, learn and join up!!!
Everyone one of us knows we need to start a dog with solid commands that the pup understands. It does not matter what breed or type of dog you own, love, and hunt with. They need a solid education and a solid plan to learn how to learn. Pat Burns has a lifetime of teaching dogs and their owners what this should look like.
Kenton Bryant spent years living in Nashville as a songwriter and singer. The music he makes now sounds a bit different, it's the music of the Bobwhite whistling in the fields at dawn and giving us a place to enjoy with our friends and our dogs.
Brandon Cerecke joins me to give us the low down on the newest shells from Boss. Copper shot that delivers everything you have expected from them in the past, and everything you will need in the future!
For over three decades, I have chased longtails in South Dakota. The places change, but the experience never fails to deliver. Friends, dogs and the sneakiest bird the was ever created, make for memories that never fade.

I've never directed you to listen to another podcast to hear about something that for all intent and purpose sounds like a bigfoot sighting or an alien visit. Trust me when I say its true, it's true. Go to the Meateater Podcast and listen to me tell a story that you will be shocked by
My season starts 1128 miles from home. With room to roam, friends to visit with and birds to be found. This year four of my regulars could not make the trip. Others stepped in to fill the beds and the fields

I catch up with some buddies and we talk doves from Virginia to South Dakota. Then we get excited about the bird reports from my favorite place. It sounds like we are in for a doozie!!
Nate Akey stopped over to the kennel to catch up on everything from soup to nuts. Nate has hunted with his shorthairs from Michigan to the Pacific Ocean. Since grad school he has been working in the outdoor industry, training and testing his dogs and recently started working for ONX. We talk about that and a whole bunch more!
For fifty years the Carters have been the OG couple in NAVHDA. We share some stories and some history of the "Why" we do what we do with our friends and our dogs. The past can help guide us into the future. The future is now!
I am always glad to talk with other podcaster who loves to talk dogs, hunting and in general, loves the people as much as the dogs!

Yes Jake is running for president of NAVHDA but that's not why he is here. When I found out his hunt testing track record, I had to get him on to give us the backstory. And it's a good story. The EB or Epagneul Breton is a lot of dog in a little package. Jake has shown the testing world that a good dog can do!!

I went to talk with some old friends last week. These are the conversations that encompass our life with dogs
Karl Gunzer and Dr RuthAnn Lobos join the podcast to catch up on whats new, clear up what's old and straight us out on what it takes to put the best food in your dogs bowl.
I invited Will to come back on the show to get a deeper understanding of his past, current and future thoughts on what we all hold so dearly. And of course some fun stories of favorite places and the people that made them special.
Ronnie Cowan has the best job on campus, and maybe the most important one. He is the Outdoor Recreation Specialist at the University of Tennessee. We talk about his vision for the program, his new found love of waterfowl hunting, his young Labrador and his first non pointing, pointing dog..... We also cover wild hogs, bears and getting the quail back!
Terry Wilson was NAVHDA's Vice President. His recent passing left a hole that will be hard to fill. Personally I only knew him from a few conversations and judging with him once. His passion for the dogs and friends he made along the way, was evident in his actions, support and philanthropy.
I took a road trip to North Dakota with the dogs to see some friends and work the dogs. Then I dropped to South Dakota to lock up my plans for the fall. For the first time I feel like I am packed and ready to go, even though its 5 plus months away. This season will be another bumper year. Not because of the birds, but because of the friends I have made, and the ones I hope to meet
Laura Reeves joins me to share her four plus decades of breeding, testing, and showing her German Wirehair Pointers. Along with some breeds you dont see to often in the field. Laura has been podcasting almost as long as me. So heres what two OG podcasters do, we talk DOG..
Jennifer Broome just launched another book to help folks sort through the puppy mind and what we humans need to know, before, during and forever!! And in the intro we get an update from my grandson's first successful turkey hunt.
Land Tawney joins us to catch up on the the latest circus balancing act. Using our land to balance the budget?? Not on his watch!

I went down to get a barrel of beer from Watermark Brewery, and it turned into one of my favorite conversations. Like many of us, the idea to jump into the world of hunting with dogs can get us a little over our skis. It's no different than anyone who has the passion to start something that they know nothing about. Yet they have the desire and passion to stick it out and make the best of it!!
I asked listeners if there was anything they would like to ask me about...anything. So I sorted out all the ones that would giver this podcast an R rating, and heres whats left!
One of the few podcasts that I have ever done solo. I went down memory lane to cap off a few of my firsts in the world of birds, dogs, guns and friends, that have known, loved and miss.

My friends Cam and Paul were invited to Morocco to hunt quail. What could go wrong?? This was an adventure of a lifetime that proves wingshooters are all the same. No matter where we go, who we hunt with or what dogs are on the ground. This is part one of their adventure.

Chris Ingram is the editor of a new publication that has roots older than your great grandfather. American Field has been publishing stories of the best dogs, places and events since 1874. When the United Kennel Club picked up the reigns, it was to preserve that heritage. Look for this new Journal to bring all dog people togethe.

On my way home from SD I stopped into the Boss headquarters. While my dog Vee ran from office to office, I brought the recorder into Brandon Cerecke's office and went on a deep dive on all things BOSS from their legecy brand to the new Warchief and a couple others you may not have heard about. It's easy to see why this company has taken over the marshes and the prairies by storm ( no pun intended ;)
Our annual trip to White Lake Hunting Lodge was a blast! Seeing old friends, making new friends and sharing the field with our dogs and the state bird of South Dakota.
Welcoming back Jennifer Broome for a second round on the podcast. We cover a lot of ground so this is a long one you don't want to miss.

A little recap of last week in Michigan and a episode that normally are only sent to my Patreon Patrons. Uncut, Unfiltered and honest stories of the many dogs I have owned and loved.
As promised, Jordan returns to the show to give us a 360 degree view of hunting birds in Alaska. From the interior to the coast, access is everywhere and so are the birds, but the logistics of hunting, training and just owning bird dogs in Alaska are the real tests of how dedicated one needs to be a wingshooter in The Last Frontier!
Danielle Prewett joins me and my daughter Jessi to talk cooking, hunting, calories and birds dogs. Something I never thought about when I started hunting. Celebrating a hunt with a recipe that adds to the memories, is worth the effort. Her new book will give you a guide to make wild game into the meal it deserves.
Amelia operates Bad Habit Kennels. It may sound like she works with rescue dogs, but it is quite the opposite. She trains and campaigns Field trial Springers and Cockers. In a relatively short time, Amelia has put her mark on the Flushing dog trials.
Next year, The Hunting Dog Film festival will premier in Kansas City. While 30,000 plus hunters converge at Pheasant Fest. This event will feature the best short films about hunting with our dogs.
Matt Frank took a path with his pup that most folks never attempt. He signed his pup up with three different hunting test organizations. We go over the results and compare his notes on how his pup did.
My buddy and favorite returning guest, Dave Utzinger came over to talk "next dog" So we broke out Koshyk's epic book Pointing Dogs volume one and went thru all of them for their versatility rating. With stories of our dogs mixed in. If you don't love this episode, you don't love dogs!!
A celebration in the woods! Its the kickoff for Michigan grouse season. If you want to learn what it takes to hunt grouse, or just want to hang out with a bunch like minded folks, this ones for you!
Ben Jones and Jon Steigerwalt join me to talk about expansion of RGS, healthy forests and their bird dogs!
Experienced dog handlers, Trent and Heather Hardy, Ted Bienemann, and Scott Goldman talk with Ron Boehme about their experiences raising puppies in their first year. The panel covers a variety of questions and each answer based on their own experiences and education. Want to watch instead? Click below! https://youtu.be/pwrwt5s6514

After attending a memorial service for a long time friend, who was an incredible upland hunter and top shelf friend, I reconnected with a bunch of friends that I haven't seen in quite sometime. So of course we hung out and turned on the recorder!
More than the dogs, more than the birds. It's the friends we make along the way that put the icing on the cake!!

Jennifer joins me to talk about her new book and why she wrote it. Helping people to understand and communicate with their dogs is why "Trained dogs live better lives"
Ben from OnX joins me to chat about what we all love, finding new places to chase birds is something we can do anytime with OnX Hunt at our fingertips. We catch up on new dogs, and new hunts from last year. And I reveal my upcoming plan to hunt Sharpies way late into the season.
I am sharing some answers and thoughts from questions that my Patrons asked about testing their dogs in a versatile dog test.
After a three day judging assignment, we had a roundtable discussion about hunt testing and how it helps us, our dogs and most importantly the data it give back to breeders to keep improving their breeding programs.
Jon Steigerwaldt from RGS gives us the latest and greatest from the progress made managing our woodlands. We talk logging we talk burning and we talk about what it takes to keep our forests healthy. We also talk a bit about.... our dogs!!
Dr. Joe Spoo took his decades of K9 care and gave us Online vet care that you can have access to anywhere anytime. The Gun Dog Doc, has an online course that covers just about anything you may encounter in the field. From tailgate exams to emergency first aid. This program will give you the the feeling of having your dogs doctor with you on every hunt!
Durrell and I have had hours of conversation over the phone and at events, but we never recorded any of them until now. His journey in the dog world doesn't cover decades, but his location help him by living near and meeting with some of the best Dogmen in the country. With mentors like that, you get an education, and knowledge.
Jack Butler is back in the boot business ! Well he never really was out, It just took some digging to bring another quality product to the good old USA.
Pat Durkin joins me to talk about media, hunting, growing up in the 60s and a whole bunch more!!
I stopped by a friends place last week, and came home with a 10 month old........ ?????? Just listen. Apparently I needed just one more.
Mike Amman invited me to watch a sharptail lek from a ground blind, and to help set up live traps, with the hope of getting a radio collar on a bird that will help The Wisconsin Sharptail Grouse Society to keep this remnant population on the path to flourishing and expand their range. This is true conservation work, in real time!!
Glen Blackwood stops over to the kennel to catch up on our season and the Woodcock Society's Birthday.
Cole Cushman doesn't sell outdoor gear, but he does sell something that most of us tend to forget. Gun & Trophy insurance may be the last thing on our minds before a trip. Cole walks us through the simple and inexpensive process. And of course we dig into his English Setter that he will never forget.

I brought Alberto on the podcast after meeting him last spring. Hunting brought him to testing his dog. testing his dog at the highest level, took him and his brother to Montana. After passing two dogs last September at the Invitational, he drove with his brother and friends straight to Montana. What a year he has had!!

If I asked who is the winningest NASCAR driver, you might say Richard Petty. If I asked who is the winningest National Rertriever Championship trainer, everyone knows that Mike Lardy holds that title. I met up with Mike and his friend Jennifer Broome at grouse camp this week. We dig into his history and his more recent journey with his German Wirehair.

While filling up my gas tank, I spotted another hunter at the pump. When I asked Bobbe how her trip was shaping up, she shared that info and a whole lot more! Her history with the Munsterlander is so interesting, that I invited Bobbe to come to our camp and share some of her journey with us about the Kleine Munsterlander

Ben Randall is a dog trainer from the United Kingdom. He teaches dogs in a manner that will surprise you. The method is proven out, from the Trial circuit, to the hunting fields. People all around the globe are using his Gun Dog App and getting the same results. In fact it is so simple...... well, just listen!
Happy Labor Day from the HDP world headquarters
Melissa Stagnaro joins us to talk about the ARSA. We know dogs are incredible, but this episode takes that statement and blows it up! From tracking people in the concrete jungles, to wilderness searches for lost hikers, rubble piles, avalanches and water rescues. Then take them to a versatile hunt test! All with the same dog...
"If Pat Burns were one of the dogs he trains, he would have put in 261 years on the job by now. If you’re doing the math that equates to more than three decades of coaxing canines into champions and helping handlers handle those canine champions. Pat Burns Elite Retriever Training, serving clients both nationally and abroad, was inspired by Burns’ love of dogs and hunting from an early age." Read more about Pat here! Brent pike and I sit down for our semi-annual chat. New gear, new dogs and new places. personally I love all three!
Addison and I catch up whats new and what's coming up.
Gunner products are made to perform, last, and enhance everything for you and your dog!
This is a short intro to projects that I have been working on for the past two years. We are going to knock the doors off the bus and enter the world of video content. Love your support, check out our first HMF video that's up!
https://youtube.com/@thehuntingdogpodcast
Matt Frank from O.F. Mossberg and Sons joins me to tell the story of his first versatile dog and the history of a versatile gun company. We met over a decade ago, but it wasnt until the last Pheasant Fest, that we re-connected. Great conversations have ensued!!
Well, this is the place to go if you want to increase your odds and increase your knowledge about hunting the king of the uplands. The Roger Moore Chapter of RGS/AWS puts on a one day camp in the heart of the best habitat that Michigan has to offer. I cant think of better time spent, before the season, to get ready for the season.
Justin comes back to the kennel to talk about the things we wonder about, worry about and how we can all develop that dog we can be proud of.
Every good dog has probably had to make a water retrieve. At least they should have what it takes if that situation comes up. We chat about the second, "Behind the Dog Flim" coming out with Trent Hardy. And we go behind the scenes in what it took and why it was important to get his young Pudelpointer into the water.
it's been a long time time since Justin and I sat down to talk training. We cover topics that you will find so helpful, you might just be ready for this upcoming season. if you follow some basic rules. It's not rocket science, it's Dog Training broke down!!!
This is a salvaged episode from eight years ago. Ed Bailey is no long sharing his wisdom in print, but luckily I captured a moment with a legendary dog man.
Jeff Hancock and his entire family, strive to breed the the best Llewellins that they can. It's all about teamwork. These dogs are all about teamwork in the field and in the home.
The Sportsmens Alliance is a powerful and unified voice for sportsmen, fighting the fight (our fight) every day across this country. If you love hunting, training and testing your dogs, you have this group to thank!
I asked my friend Dave to review a new flim series that I have been working on. I knew Dave was the right fella to help me breakdown this subject. He does alot of research when he decides to add another hunting dog into his family. So who better to help me kick off the introduction of Behind The Dog Films. If you want to watch this 56 minute film, head here and follow us on Instagram and Facebook!
We do a deep dive into what makes a great training collar. That is no easy thing to do in an hours time. Garmin producuts around your dogs neck and your wrist, make you and your dog, safe and successful.
Josh Miller from Riverstone Kennels, joins us this week to talk all things Labrador! As a professional trainer, and breeder, Josh has to make tough descions when it comes to what dogs make the team. Listen and learn. This information can apply to any breeding program.
I was with the Colonel dove hunting when he was 94. I could only hope to have a life as full as this American hero. Jack passed recently and it brought a flood of memories, one of them was that I interviewed him eight years ago. Enjoy and remember!
This picks up where we left off. Alberto is bringing two dogs to the big dance this year!
I just had the pleasure of meeting Alberto and Adrian while I was in Pennsylvania. Not only are these two the next generation of upland hunters, they are taking it to the next level. Emigrating to the United States was the start of their journey. From learning the language to learning how to train dogs. Everything was new to them. This year Alberto will be taking two dogs to the Invitational test. And if I was a betting man........
OnX hunt invited me to be on a panel of folks that have vast years of experiance with many breeds. We go round robin, answering some tough questions on what we think is, and has been or favorite breeds. What they excell and what they dont...
Mark Peterson grew up in Michigan, working the orchards and chasing birds when he finished his chores. That work ethic formed both of his career paths. Mark and his Dad took their upland hunting to a level most will only dream about. Together in one season the traversed North America with their dogs and hunted every species of upland game. The people, places, dogs and birds made this the trip of a lifetime.
I was invited to attend the Canadian Valley QF banquet. True to form, I made some new friends, found some new places to hunt and learned a lot about the oldest game bird in the United States!
Mike Mapes started helping a few friends with re-homing their dogs. it turns out, there are lots of good dogs that need a second chance. When people found out what Mike could do for them, the word spread. There are alot of dogs that are more, or sometimes less than their owners bargained for. Mike takes those dogs and turns the corner for them. It just shows that there is always a path for potential!!
This episode is a plea, to get more advocacy from hunters to think about what the birds need, not what we need.
If you shoot a wild bird in this country, you need to support the habitat organization that support those birds. Period!!!
Phil Francone from Meindl USA set me up with a pair of boots last summer. They were everything I could hope for. If "miles equals birds" then "Meindl's equals miles"
Jeff Funke joins me to talk about the VHDF. Building a better mouse trap can be difficult, but a few dedicated people found that it was possible. The Versatile Hunting Dog Federation wanted to bring better clarity to the judgement of the versatile hunting dog. For breeders and buyers, the more details in test scores will be invaluable when making decisions. The better the test. The better the dog!!
Andrew Wayment likes to write about his beloved dogs and his beloved family. So when I scheduled this interview, I also invited his brother Shawn,"The Bird Dog Doc" to join in the conversation. These two brothers share their Upland hunting and Fly fishing passion, to a point that few ever do.
I will be attending the Canadian Valley ( in Oklahoma) Quail Forever chapter banquet at the end of this month. This is a little primer to the event. If you are anywhere near and want to see why we get together, why we have banquets and why we love quail, then put March 31st on your schedule!
This episode is a to-fer We visit with Mark from Norse Retrievers and Blue Picardy's. Say that again?? In the first half we talk Labs and training, trialing and breeding. Then we switch up to learn about a very rare breed in North America. The Blue Picardy Spaniel (it's a pointing breed) and quite versatile too.
Mike Ammand joins us from Pheasant Fest to talk about an exciting habitat project that is helping one of our favorite game birds. Sharptails have been in the Dairy state forever, but they needed some help. The Wisconsin Sharptail Grouse Society is working to ensure they will be on the landscape forever. Ryan Callahan joins us in the conversation, to help spread the word.
Listen and play with a few of my Patrons form our last Zoom room. No fact checking or cheating! See if you know anything about dogs, guns, alcohol or just general hunting knowledge. if you come to Pheasant Fest and show me at least 5 of your correct answers, I will give you an assortment of bling for the show.
Ed Arnett has been on this show a few times. This one will will cover everything from Habitat to Hunting and why Ed is NOT renewing his NAVHDA membership! And I am not going to try and change his mind!!!
Travis Frank joins me to talk all about his journey with his own dog. Filming hunts for a decade without the pressure of bring your own dog, gave Travis a new perspective on what we all go through. His first hunting dog proved to be a challenge that he took on, and succeeded! We also touch on a lot of training tips, as well as a deep dive into what we'll both be doing at Pheasant Fest and next season. Your gunna love this one!!!!
Glen Goldthorpe is introducing a website that will assist the gun dog community. After a very successful launch in the UK. Glenn brings his passion to hunting dogs, to help hunters connect with breeders and visa versa. We talk about everything dog, dog training and hunting. comparing notes and finding the common ground between two continents.
www.gundogsusa.com
Jared Wicklund joins me to talk P Fest, his season, my season and your season and whats in store for habitat across the country.
From Mountian grouse to Minnesota woodcock, we get a season recap from two fellas that hit it hard all year. And they just happen to work for the company that helps us all find places to hunt. Andrew and Ben are the traveling wingshooters from OnX hunt.
Heather and Trent Hardy have become close friends of mine in a few short years. They tag team the fields, water and birds, as much as any young couple does. traveling wingshooting is probably their favorite adventure. Making friends and memories all along the way!
Thomas Appel joins us to talk versatility and performance of his favorite breed. The German Wachtelhund has been around a long time, but I'll bet most of you have never seen one, let alone hunted over one. This will give you an insight to a medium size dog with a large dog heart! Thomas is also the first person in North America to go through the process of becoming the first DWNA certified judge for the club.
Play along and try to get yourself on a future episode. If you get 5 or more correct. write me at ronb@thehuntingdogpodcast.com
Have a great Holiday! Thanks for all your support Jan will start the ninth year of this podcast!!
Glenn Blackwood stopped in the kennel to share some news, some stories and share a holiday drink. We answer all the questions that a bird hunter thinks about. Should I get another dog? Should I travel more to wing shoot or stay home? and what is the perfect way to enjoy rye whiskey and still support conservation?
Play along with the whole gang, and see if you know more about the five pillars of Upland hunters. Which are Dogs, Birds, Guns, Tobacco and Alcohol......
After four days of sub zero wind chill weather. The Gang from White Lake Lodge warm up with some drinks and stories from and epic trip in South Dakota.
John Wade is a professional dog trainer, sometimes dog fixer. The one thing that does'nt vary, is how dogs learn. Listen up and apply some of John's tip and tricks.
Ruf and I get to take a trip together. We're took off from Wisconsin early Wednesday morning this week and well, laughs, hunts and a few beers in between ensue. Enjoy!
I invited Boss Ammo, Gunner Kennels and Garmin to test their Dog related knowledge. Turns out I needed to make them all multiple choice!!! Play along and let me know if you got more than 5 correct. You may be on the next one!!
I stopped by Pyke Gear to pick up a few new items, and brought the microphone and beer to catch up with Brent. A few updates on gear followed by a run down of our season so-far with our young pups. never enough time, never enough birds, should be the title of this episode.
I hit a milestone Bday today. So while I was feeling nostalgic, I found an old photo album and it had my first hunting license in it. That brought back a flood of memories, and I wanted to share one with you!
Terry Wilson is running for VP of The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association. It doesn't happen very often, but occasionally one of the rank and file members steps up to throw their name in the hat. Terry lays out his platform and vision for the future of NAVHDA. Listen up and be able to say "I VOTED"
Two first time bird hunter, drove from Florida to Michigan's UP. why would some try the impossible? Well there is an old saying about something being wasted on the young.... Evan and Amanda had alot of firsts on this trip. Listen up and count the first for yourself!
Trevor Hubbs joins me to talk recruitment. No not,"you" joining the Military, the Military joining you in the fields, woods and lakes of this country that they protect, even after they fight a war!!
Rachel Willard decided to jump into the dog world with both feet! her husband Andrew became her cheering section. It all paid off for the opening season in Montana. So much so, that they just got another pup to add to the family.
Last trip to ND, I kept the recorder on the picnic table. That way those short stories that never make an episode can be saved. This is what we all do and wish we could do again, or forget....
We did this around the kitchen table, while we were on the great plains in search of Sharptails.
Congrats to you if your score is higher than Trents???

Greg Blair from Purina joins me in Wisconsin to talk about all the different venues there are for bird dog lovers like us! This was the day that I ran Tagus in his NA test. Greg got to watch us in the field and water portions then we took a break and chatted about how all the styles of testing and trialing come together.

Our second episode of HDP Trivia. Play along and see if you beat the pros. Chances are you can!!
I invited Justin McGrail back to the microphone to help with some of your training questions and issues. You will want to listen though this one a couple of times!!
Justin, is without question, one of only a small handfull of trainer that focuses on training dogs to handle wild birds in wild places. His methods are proven and backed up with 30 plus years of helping you get the most out of your dog.
Nick Green from MUCC (Michigan United Conservation Club) joins me to talk policy, advocacy, the possible expansion of Fort Grayling and what we can and should be doing. And of course updates on our dogs!!!
It's been a few years since Todd was on the show. I always learn a few new tricks when I talk with him. We talk about everything from when to start training, to when to stop, (the answer is never!) Molding a pup early is a key factor. The proof comes in the hunting season.
Land Tawney joins me to catch up on the latest news.
From losing conservation dollars to losing 50 million acres of grass. But, its not all doom and gloom. We can do something about, and as hunters we do have a VOICE so use yours!!!!
This is the first installment of HDP Trivia. Once a month (maybe more down the road) I will replay these trivia nights for all you to test your knowledge. And who knows, maybe one day you will be on the show!!
James and Luke Jubran started Smile Outdoors. it is a series of books aimed towards kids reading about the wild world we love. Lets be honest ( I helped raise three kidos) getting kids into the outdoors can be at a minimum, complicated. So how about reading to to them, and teaching them the alphabet, using books written and designed by hunters. It's like imprinting a love of the natural world to them without a backpack or car seat!
Paul and Chad from Brays Island Plantation, joined me last winter to describe what it takes to build a paradise for upland hunters. A little history, a little tour and a lot of desire on my part to return.
Brett Walton hunted in between morning and evening milking on his Grandfathers dairy farm. Now he hunts between Thursday and Monday in the great state of Kansas. Building Walton's Inc. wasn't easy, but with great family and employees, anything can be accomplished.
Kevin Guillen from Wilderness Athlete and K9 Athlete joins me to talk about the products they produce that can give both us and our dogs the edge they need to preform. Get your dog ready for this coming season.
Camille Rice and Claire Tricky join us to talk about Breeders and the support that they give to first time owner/handlers.
Cam is a decades long and renowned breeder of Weimaraners, and Claire is a brand spickity new owner of a talented young pup.
We get to hear from both of them and their experiences. If all breeders helped new owners like Camille and all new pup owners followed up with training like Claire, the dog world would be all the better!!
Tana Kradolfer of True Grit Britt's joins us to talk American Brittanys and why she has picked this breed to hunt over for a lifetime. Tana is a dedicated breeder, trainer, mentor and hunter. The American Brittany truly has GRIT! And so does Tana.
There is so much good advise in this episode, that you will listen to it TWICE!! Justin, Ben and myself did a webinar for ONX Elite members. Get your pad and pencil out and take notes. Major things to avoid in your pups first year should be turned into a book.

Adam Thomas joins us to talk about his new venture. That will translate to an ADVENTURE that you and your dog will not forget. Sharptail Ridge is a one of a kind dog and hunter service. Save driving time to the West or simply stay and hunt one of the most beautiful parts of the lower 48 states. Listen up and plan your next adventure!!
Matt Rinella started a podcast to voice his opinions on a problem that many of us experience, but not many talk about. Matt started Hunt Quietly to be a voice, and to give a voice to those who think its getting harder to find hunting spots. But that's not all he is concerned about. Listen to an opinion that you may, or may not agree with!
Dr Sarah Love is a Sports medicine Veterinarian. We talk about all the things we (you and I) don't do with our K9 athletes. Warm-ups cool-downs and stretching. That's right! maybe we could develop a simple per hunt routine that could help get a little more out of the creatures that we ask so much of!
We also talk about the onset and maintenance of Osteoarthritis, and what we can do about it.

My friend Jill was in the Valley this week. We took our dogs on a walk and swim and the conversation that developed was worthy of hitting the record button. Jill spends half of her year traveling to learn from some of the best trainers in the country. Then she applies it to her string of bird dogs while she guides hunts at otter Creek Farm and Distillery in Georgia. Just a great conversation that only dog people can enjoy!

It took some selective breeding about 60 years ago, but they got what they were looking for in Hungary. We just wrapped up a weekend in Wisconsin, learning some training methods that were new to me. But in the end, there are many roads that lead to success.

Tom Davis has being writing about wing shooting for over three decades. But his history of hunting started out long before. Growing up in rural Iowa in the 1960's the need for Plot books or permission, was rarely needed. Pheasants and Quail were literally at the bird feeder of his boyhood home. It was only natural that they became is first quarry. Along with his Irish Setter, Tom lived a life in the uplands, like Huck Finn lived on the Mississippi.

Hands down, my trip to North Dakota goes into my top 5 all time hunting trips. What was different about this trip was, I came home with 2 birds and one of them was given to me! The real limits are the memories that I brought home. Taking an old dog out for what may be his last season. A young dog that showed me her stuff. And a inexperienced dog that showed me she is ready to step up to the plate and hit some home runs in the future. And new friends that will become old friends.

The North American model of conservation is a bragging point of hunters here in the States. Although, we could learn a little from our fellow hunters in Germany. When hunters step into the woods over there, the one rule that cant be overlooked is, you must have a trained dog to help recover a wounded animal. It doesnt matter if its a rabbit or a roe deer, woodcock or wild boar. You have to make every effort to recover that resource!! Thats conservation!

His girl Elhew Hustler took home top dog at the 1998 Woodcock Championship and earned a seat at the head of the table (at the Paradise resturant) !!!
Hold onto your seats. My buddy "The Ruf" joins me with his usual, wet sense of humor. The crowd tends to laugh so hard they......yeah you know. Enjoy and hope your shots are true and your dogs are making you proud.
This is a fun/silly recording I did last October with some new friends and some great dogs. Sit back and grab a drink (make it a stiff one) because we over-served ourselves, so you might as well feel like your with us!
Ryan has been a Labrador lover his whole life. And he includes them in every adventure he pursues. From elk guiding to duck blinds, his dogs have adapted to whatever the season brings. His training methods are different... but in the end, they learned what he needed out of them, and gave 100%
I am joined by Rehan Nanna. He is Garmins field representative for all things we do. Training our dogs, hunting our dogs, and thanks to Garmin we no longer spend time looking for our dogs. We throw in some dog stories and even just how bad some guns shoot (can't be our fault) even if we have lusted after that gun for years.
Sit back and learn the how and the why in the world of shotshell ballistics. If it takes ten thousand hours to master a trade, then LP Brezney is the Obi Wan Kenobi of the firearms world.
Recap of my bear hunt/grouse hunt in the rain forests of Upper Michigan.and some rambling on about how things are always better around a campfire!
I stop by Krystal Creek Kennels for a visit/ free night of lodging, and the next thing ya know, I dig out the recorder after dinner and drinks. Al &Tracey Harmeyer are always fun to visit with. I only wish I lived closer to them. When you join their, Wisconsin NAVHDA chapter, you get real help, even during a pandemic!!
Dr. Seth Bynum goes over some of the most common questions in K9 health and goes down a few rabbit holes with me. be ready for the season, arm yourself with knowledge. You don't have to be a Rocket Scientist to own a dog, but some tip from Seth and some common sense will go a long way!!
Mark Cushing's book Pet Nation hits the store this week. It is a book that will open your eyes to the impact dogs have had on our lives, health, and society! From the backyard to the bedroom and ever the boardroom in some cases. Full of great info for the new or lifelong dog owner.
Brent Pike joins me to talk about Pyke Gear's addition to their website. PGs website has added a PDF file for the traveling wingshooter. Unless you only hunt in your backyard? this will give you some tips and tricks to find more places and birds. then we talk about some of our worst trips and companions that make or break a hunting trip. Finally we hear whats new and next in the Pyke Gear line up!
This is the first time that I have ever interviewed two fellow judges and two apprentice judges after a very long day of following dogs. You will get a feel for how and why we spend our free time evaluating dogs.
Whatever you think you know about bird dogs. May have a bit of truth but listen to the common sense of Justin, to round out your knowledge.
Sean Curran of RGS/AWS helps kick off the largest membership drive of the year. You cant put it off any longer. If you shoot a wild bird in this country, you owe it to the habitat organization that supports that bird. if it's your bird, then it's your duty.
Ever think I could shorten up my intros? This one turned into the entire recording. Actually a listener sent me a list of training myths. So I dove into them with my usual finesse!! enjoy August is almost here...
CZ-USA invited me to attend the SCTP Championship. What an eye-opening experience. 1800 kids competing from around the country. This is the other side of the shotgunning world!!
Austin Choate joins me to introduce the newest product for waterfowlers, from Redneck. Me being a comfort-based hunter in my golden years, I see way more possibilities. Dove, Turkey, and Pigeons. This blind is so well constructed and roomy that I am adding a satellite dish, stove, and frig.
I get asked almost weekly if this breed is all they are cracked up to be. So I called George Decosta, to find out the why. And while we're at it we dig deep into the pro's and the con's Yes popularity can be a con. listen and learn.
The levy is breeching and we need your help with the sandbags. This is a really important episode that requires your thoughts, your input, and your support.
Diver ducks are in a league all their own. Water nesting birds can have all the same struggles that ground-nesting birds face, and a few more. Mike (almost a doctor) Johnson, shares his research with us. Mike has spent more hours in chest waders than most people do in a lifetime. I learned a lot and so will you!!!
What was going to be an update on Taffy's training, turned into one of the best episodes in the last year. Jordan's methods and explanations of training bird dogs hit a home run with me. and it will with you.
Re-release of episode #6 John (Jack) Mercer Patton. Being raised by one of the Greatest Generation, I can't pass on an opportunity to become all ears when they speak.
Morgan Mason just hired into BHA. His passion for veterans combined with his passion for all things hunting made him the best choice to head up the new wing of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers The Armed Forces Initiative. Listen and learn
Jess Johnson is one of the founding members of Artemis. And like the Goddess of the hunt, she slings arrows with the best of them. In mythology, Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and was said to have perfect aim with the bow and arrow. I'm not saying Jess is the daughter of a Greek God... but her parents might have miss named her....
A listener asked if I have ever had an episode on the subject of, what is a Versatile Dog??? So I had my friend and fellow NAVHDA judge (Jeff Jalbert) join me for a long chat on the subject. We start out with a trip down memory lane and bring it around to what we feel about the word versatile. Sit back this is a long one.
Another oldie from the archives. My interview with Rick Smith from his home in Crozier VA. circa 2015 !!
Anna Artz joins me today to share her experience with the Cesky Fousek. Anna is a veterinarian and a wingshooter as well as a senior judge for what may be the smallest breed club in the country. If what I learned from this interview is true, I might own a dog with facial hair again!!
Well even on TV we get more reruns during the COVID 19 era. One of my listeners asked if I could re-release this classic interview. So I thought, what the heck, yes!! If you have any other old favorites, write me a note and we'll see if they can be dug out of the archives.
Kirby and I catch up on all things double barrel. There is just something special about a good gun that has passed through a few hands over a hundred years. It's like shaking hands with the last owner, even if you never met him.
Steve Rinella jumps on the phone to catch up with me and his home town memories. I shoot a couple of listener's questions at him and a canine quiz at the end. The rest is just two friends rambling on about "life"
Mike Hook from the SC Dept. of Natural Resources joins me to update hunters on the latest news and progress of the Bobwhite Quail Initiative. South Carolina might not be a destination for traveling wingshooters yet... The plan is in place and working. Quail are responding to the habitat improvements. I might just sneak down there next year to chase northern woodcock and southern quail.
Joe is a listener that took me to task. After asking folks to write to me about their story/ journey into the uplands, He was one of the first to share his path and passion, and how the dog got him into on the ground habitat work for Pheasants Forever. Enjoy, we'll all be at it again soon.
It was a tall order but Mark and his Dad started out last Sept and hunted through Feb. Together they successfully took every upland gamebird flying in the North American Continent. It wasn't easy, but the Peterson's have no regrets. Not to mention a freezer full of feathered trophies for the dinner table.
Glen is the most well-read hunter and fisherman that I have ever know. His passion was spurred at an early age, and his life has truly revolved around those early experiences. he has also chased a lot of birds across the country with his Spaniels and now Cocker.
