It gives me great pleasure to welcome Andrew Phillips to this week’s Great Australian stories in the Making.
Andrew was destined to have a very promising career in the world of AFL in the 80’s. Sadly a degenerative back condition could not stand the rigors of AFL football and his career was cut short.
The former Carlton footballer turned to the world of business and with the same grit, determination and prowess learnt on the field then applied in the board room.
He has spent a lifetime working to create educational opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, and is now running The Phillips Brothers Foundation.

During one of the strangest and toughest years of our lives, we invited Frank Ponissi, the General Manager – Football at Melbourne Storm,
Frank was at the club during the years when they were heavily punished for salary cap breaches - and the fallout that occurred - and how they had to work through those tough periods, yet were able to rebuild and become the powerhouse club they were before.
In fact, they became even better despite all the challenges.
Frank shares much of the wisdom he gained through that experience. The lessons he emphasises always revolve around the importance of high standards, accountability and plain old hard work.
“Hard work will always beat talent when talent doesn’t work hard"

There’s no point exceeding your customer’s expectations if it’s sending you broke.
Before you think about more things you can do for your customer, first and foremost, you should focus on delivering exactly what you promised. Fulfil everything you said you would do.
It’s surprising how many business owners lose sight of this. This is by far the most important aspect of the relationship.
If you then want to offer even more than what you promised, you need to understand what impact this has on your business and deliver it in a strategic and systematic way, otherwise it could be costing you more than you think.

Marcus Theodor is the owner of C2Films (c2films.com.au) - Australia’s highest rated, most reviewed wedding event videographer.
C2Films has built their reputation by focusing on delivering the highest quality products to their clients. Marcus recognised, though, that the product is not the film they produce, but the amazing experience they deliver for clients on their most special day.

To meet demand, Marcus needed to re-engineer the business to ensure quality didn't suffer - he was committed to delivering the best experience possible for each and every client, no matter how many.
He shares great insight into what it takes to build a benchmark business from scratch, and the importance of building a great reputation.

We all know that keeping your existing clients is easier and cheaper than finding new ones. Every business owner’s goal should be to develop customer loyalty.
Though it’s important to note that there is a distinct difference between loyalty and repeat business.
Developing customer loyalty relies on you consistently exceeding your clients expectations.
If you only meet the minimum standard they expect – that’s hardly going to get them excited about coming back to you next time, or calling their friends and telling them about how awesome your business is.
You need to delight your customers. You need to surprise them, to exceed their expectations, to meet their every need – and then do more!
If you do this, your customers have no reason or desire to go anywhere else, they won’t be swayed by cheaper competition. They know you, trust you and become advocates for your business.
In this short podcast, Stefan explores all this and more.

No matter what business you are in: you will never build a great business all on your own. The bigger and better the business you want to build, the bigger and better the team you will need around you.
But winning teams do not happen by accident, nor are they created overnight. Selecting the right people is just the beginning of building a successful team; to have them perform at a benchmark level, you need to focus on creating an environment that allows them to excel.
In this short episode, Stefan explains the six keys to building a winning team.

Chris was getting busier and his time was in ever more demand - and eventually he realised something needed to change. Although his natural reaction was to be central to everything in the business, with our guidance, he was able to empower his team to take on more responsibility - and to his surprise, they not only met the challenge, they excelled. This led to flow-on benefits for Chris and the business.
Chris shares his own learnings and gives advice that will resonate with anyone leading a team.

Our interview with Matt Spiteri, the owner of ESC Electrical. Matt shares his story of incredible growth of his business, particularly in the past 18 months.
ESC Electrical (http://escelectrical.com.au) offer electrical services to the high-volume domestic and multi-residential markets.
Matt has been working with us at Business Benchmark Group since October 2017. Although a relatively young business, ESC electrical was an up and coming player in the market prior to joining with us. In the 18 months since he began working with us at Business Benchmark Group, ESC Electrical has fully established itself in the market with Matt taking the business to a whole new level.
In this time, Matt has clearly seen his identity shift from being an operator in the business, to spending more of his time on higher hourly rate tasks as an owner and investor in the business. When he started working with us, Matt was still on the tools and working very long hours.
18 months later, Matt no longer works on the tools, works less hours in the business overall, yet the business has grown substantially and continues to grow to new and greater heights.
A key development in the growth of the business was to focus on identifying and serving their ideal target market. This focus has ensured that their work they carry out is more profitable and predictable. This has led to stronger financial returns and continued growth.
It has also allowed the team to continue to grow, with the addition of an administration team and the promotion of 'on-the-tools' staff to estimators.

As a business owner, you need to understand the difference between horizontal and vertical time, and ensure that the work you do is for a high hourly rate.
If you want to build a progressive and growing business, the work you do needs to be at a higher level, and you must have the trust and confidence in your team to delegate your lower hourly rate tasks to. Stefan explores this all in this week's podcast.

Many business owners say they win a lot of their clients through word-of-mouth However, we find that many of these same business owners who claim this actually have no structured process in place – the referrals come randomly and unpredictably.
In this episode, our Senior Strategist Damien Churton shows us how to get more people to recommend us.
• 2:38 – Damien discusses his experience • 4:43 - Where do you get recommendations? o How do you build and leverage your existing network? o How to identify your circle of influence • 8:05 – Get clear on your ideal target market. • 10:55 – What to say when asking for the referral. How clear is your ask? • 15:25 – Dealing with your head trash • 19:20 – You need a structured process
This is just a brief overview of building an effective referral strategy. We encourage you to download our eBook and sign-up to our weekly EDM were we discuss each of these steps in far more detail, and give you activities to put in place which will help you build a successful strategy.

The backbone of the economy is small business - but their contribution is anything but small! There are an estimated two million businesses across Australia, providing nearly half of all employment. It is a crucial sector that underpins the operations of many larger businesses.
But running a small business is not easy! If it were, everyone would be doing it. It’s not for the feint-hearted!
But although it’s not easy, it does not need to be hard. In this episode, recorded from ABC Radio’s Nightlife, Stefan explores the activities that small business owners must do in order to be successful, including planning and understanding your numbers.
After all, finance is the language of business and if you don’t know your numbers, you will be flying blind when it comes to running and growing a successful business.

Many business owners struggle with knowing what to charge for their products and services.
When we first start out in business, it can be tempting to have low, or even discounted, prices as we often are desperate to land new business.
However, this approach will quickly cause problems, including a tight cash flow, needing to more work for less and building a client base who are largely driven by price.
Instead, we need to ensure our whole identity as business owners is about delivering value and setting prices based on this value you provide.
This helps ensure that price is only one factor your customers consider when buying from you, but it isn’t the key factor.
If you want to build a robust business and be able to invest in innovation, as well as build a reputation for high quality and service, your pricing model must allow you to do that.
This week’s podcast is a recording of Stefan Kazakis appearance on ABC Radio’s Nightlife with tony Delroy. Stefan offers valuable, real-world advice to business owners, including taking their calls to the studio.

The current economic environment is causing some business owners to become concerned and unsure about what the future will bring and how their business will fare.
But the fact of the matter is that these are cycles will always occur, and as a business owner, you can ensure that your business not only survives through a challenging economic environment, but thrives.
There are actually 3 distinct cycles that affect business performance: the Economic Cycle, the Business Cycle and your Personal Cycle - and you need to anticipate and be aware of these cycles in order to lead your business to continued growth and success through challenging circumstances.
Stefan gives advice for business owners about how to navigate through difficult cycles to ultimately build a business that can weather any storm.

We interview Robert Krastich, owner of Sharper Facility Services (sharper.com.au) which offers high-end commercial cleaning in Melbourne.
The business was established in 2004 and Robert had done a fantastic job growing it to that point. However, he realised he had reached a crossroads. Although he was making good income and had established a good client base, he also recognised he had lost some focus and commitment to growing the business.
He knew he wanted to take his business to the next level, but he realised he didn’t have the knowledge or experience to successfully do so.
In April 2018, Robert reached out to Business Benchmark Group. Since working with us to re-focus his business strategy and clearly articulating his goals, his business has gone to a whole new level.
Robert imparts valuable advice and experience for all business owners, who will hear first-hand what it takes to break through your glass ceiling and take your business to new and greater heights.

Stefan Kazakis joins ABC Nightlife's Tony Delroy to discuss why it's important for business owners to periodically take a good, hard look at the health of your business and determine what's working, what's not working and what are we doing about it.
It's important that you just don't walk past a low standard in your business, you need to always be reflecting and analysing on what areas you can improve.
Business owners should be investing at least 2 hours per week to think clearly about their business goals and determine how their business is going in the way to achieve them.

Anyone who has ever run a small business can tell stories about the immeasurable value of word-of-mouth referrals by happy customers - some would even argue it is the most powerful form of advertising when someone is singing the praises of your company or product.
Likewise, talk about a bad experience is news that travels far and wide - that's why business owners and their staff should strive to make sure customers are always happy so they will refer your product or service to family and friends.
Stefan Kazakis, CEO of the Business Benchmark Group, joins Tony Delroy on ABC Radio's Nightlife to explains how important it is to build a referral-based business.

We often think about crisis as a negative – but it can also often be considered a positive. In this brain stretch episode, Stefan explores how business owners need to recognise the difference between leadership and management, especially in response to a crisis.
As a leader, it is your responsibility to grow your resources, to understanding what is working, what is not working and to determine what you’re going to do about it.
A manager’s role is to manage those resources in order to get better outcomes, improve output and increase efficiency and effectiveness.
As a small business owner, you’re often required to wear both hats multiple times in a day, or even within an hour. As a leader, you need to recognise that there are two different mindsets you can have: a “cost of growth” mindset where you stay in maintenance mode, versus a “cost of opportunity” mindset where you’re in investment mode and actively looking to take your business forward.
It is up to you as a business owner to ensure you lead your business towards growth.

When it comes to building your competitive advantage, it all comes back to the concept of "Hero or Guide".
This means that when you make the customers the hero of the story - by understanding their wants, needs and motivations and focusing on how to better serve them - this will inevitably mean that you will be able to innovate and serve your customers better than your competitors.
Stefan explores this idea, and gives advice to business owners looking to build a business that is innovative and stands out from the competition.

Chris Galea's story as a business owner is an incredibly interesting and eventful ride. He purchased Polyshine - suppliers of polishing compound for the manufacturing industry - in 2008 and by 2010, he was down to his last $1,000 in the bank and was on his way to Singapore to do a deal that HAD to work, otherwise he and his business were in dire straits.
Unfortunately, that meeting fell through! He was "stood up" and had no other options on the table, and was staring down the failure of his business after years of hard work.
However, without giving away more of his story, through tenacity and persistence, it was this same trip that turned around his fortunes completely.
In the years since, he has built a very strong reputation of the business internationally and taken advantage of some amazing opportunities and his business has flourished ever since.
This is a must-listen to episode for business owners who have ridden all the ups and downs of life as a business owner.
Chris's story shows the power of making the most of any situation, the drive to continue during difficult circumstances and what it takes to come out the other side in a mush stronger and fortunate position.

How do you outplay and outlast in the game of business?
How do you outlast your head trash - your mental fatigue that says that you can't do something?
Stefan explores how to create stamina in today's brain-stretch episode of our podcast.
When you give up on something and never complete it - it's a missed opportunity and helps create a pattern in your life of a person who just never finishes things.
Life is a pattern - the last 5 years are not much different to the 5 years before that. And the next 5 years will be the same unless you create new patterns so you can outlast the mental fatigue that gets in the way of stamina.

Identifying and serving your ideal target market is vital to the long term success of your business. You need to shape your business from the foundations up, and focus on how you can best serve your ideal customer.
If you try to be everything to everyone, you are actually going to be no good to anybody. From a strategic point of view, your desired target market directs the cut of your business.
Stefan gives an example of when he was brought into his parent's struggling textile and manufacturing business - and how important important identifying and serving their ideal customer was in turning around the business.

Our interview with Damian De Vincentis, owner of be0nd plumbing. be0nd plumbing (www.beondplumbing.com.au) is one of Victoria’s leading emergency response and maintenance plumbing companies who offer 24/7 emergency service including storm relief.
Being involved in reactive maintenance and having to work closely with insurance companies requires strict adherence to processes and inevitably a lot of paperwork. This is always a significant challenge to meet, especially in a fast-growing business.
Damian became a client of ours in November 2017. Since then, beOnd plumbing has gone from strength to strength.
• Revenue has more than doubled • Team has grown from four to eight • Huge improvement in process handling • Key achievement has been building a trusted team of A-graders who reliably adopt and follow the procedures put in place.
Damian shares tremendous insight into how beOnd plumbing has been able to grow so successfully, especially over the previous 12 months, and how vital his team, and the processes they have put in place, has been to that growth.

In business, and in your personal life, you make a choice: Are you a dream maker, or a dream taker?
In this brain stretch episode, Stefan explores the concepts of “Mindset, Belief, Identity and Accountability”, and how getting these right is crucial to your business success.
The reality is that to be successful in business, you need to have a curiosity-based mindset and be open to evaluating new information. You need to open-minded about how to consistently do things better.
You need to cultivate an identity of embracing accountability. You need to have stamina, and ensure you always finish things – not just start them.
The journey of business is never a straight line. It’s not easy, which is why only 13% of adults in the world have the belief and mindset to run a business.

Matthew Adams founded Motosign (https://motosign.com.au) in 2004 and has grown a business that is passionate about everything to do with signage - vehicle signage, car wraps, shop front signage, wall graphics, outdoor banners and much more.
Matthew joined our Board of Directors 12 program in 2017, and within one year, the business has achieved phenomenal growth, including doubling their revenue within a year, growing their team from 4 to 7 and doubling their Average Dollar Sale.
Matthew Adams explains the change in his in mindset and identity he's experienced in his first year as part of our Board of Directors 12 Program - and what that has done not only for his business, but also his family and personal life.
As Matthew mentions:
"My mindset has improved 1000% in the last year.”
My wife pointed out that since joining Business Benchmark Group, she could see the change in me. Having things like cashflow under control keeps a lot of pressure off the family. Paying for the kids schooling, paying off the house, paying for holidays... since our crisis point, it has freed things up a lot.
The sky is the limit. We would have never have even thought about a million dollars turnover three years ago!"
MotoSign continues it's exceptional growth, and is progressing and diversifying in all areas of the business. This episode is full of inspiration and advice for business owners at all stages of business.

A "Think Tank" session by Stefan in which he explores how important it is to be able to tell the story of your business, and the identity shift that needs to occur as you progress through the different stages of business.
As your business evolves, you need to be telling new stories - not the same old ones you've been telling for years. Tell new stories, and as you act as a bridge builder for your clients, have them tell your stories for you.

Stefan was fortunate to impart some wisdom to the nominees for the 2018 Manningham Business Excellence Awards Young Achiever.
As we head into a new year, this is a great opportunity to reflect on where you’ve been, and where you want to head in the new year and beyond.
Stefan shares some of his wisom with these up-and-comers in what he calls a “discovery conversation”.
This is an inspirational discussion for everyone at whatever season of life you are in, based around the theme of how do you achieve success in business, and more broadly, in life?
Some of the pearls of wisdom and topics that Stefan explores (in what are fast becoming known as #Stefanisms!):
• Are you a person of integrity? Do you do what you say? Do you finish what you start?
• How to maintain standards – “The standard that you choose to walk by, defines you standard.”
• Will you allow will-payer to move your life forward, or will-not power?
• Say no to the things that will not keep you on the path to mastery.
• You need to have passion – something that you’re good at, and you love doing. You will have incredible energy when you are committed to something, and you have influence on the outcome.
• What’s one way we can be 1% better every day? It’s important that you commit to continually get better each and every day.
• Every day, before you leave home, say to yourself – “Today I will be at personal best”. Feed yourself that vitamin every single day.
• How do you ensure that perfection isn’t getting in the way of your progression?
• The most successful businesses have a 100% inclusive, 100% involvement culture.
• Consistently ask yourself – What is working? What is not working? What are we doing about that?
• Don’t ask for things that don’t have a commercial outcome. Pick your battles, walk in the feet of your leaders and owners, and focus on activities that have a commercial outcome.
• On the importance of prioritization: Less is more. Every individual in an organisation should not be responsible for more than 5 tasks.
• Delegation without a clear understanding of outcome is abdication.
• A leader is responsible for growing resources (people). A manager is responsible for managing the output of resources (people).
• The #1 reason why people join another’s team is because something is going somewhere.

Our interview with Craig and Jessica Abbott - founders and owners of Heavy Haulers / PHIIT Studio (recorded in August 2015).
Craig and Jess offer fantastic insight into what it takes to recognize an opportunity, develop a unique concept and make it successful - and how they overcame all the inevitable obstacles along the way.
Starting out as Heavy Haulers back in 2007, there was nothing like it available in group exercise. It was hugely unique in terms of feedback, measurability, quality, variety and culture of team and members.
They took this unique concept and were able to create an incredibly successful business. Notably, in the highly competitive fitness industry, they've been able to achieve 77% retention rate, so they're definitely doing something right!
The business continues to go from strength to strength. Just recently, they've diversified their business with the launch of PHIIT Studio alongside Heavy Haulers.

Our interview with Gavin Sloan, the founder of LiveChatMonitoring.com. An incredible story of turning around a business on the brink of folding, to becoming a global leader in it's industry.
This interview took place in April 2015, and since then, the business has continued to grow exponentially.
In the 14 months prior to this interview, Live Chat Monitoring was just beginning it's huge explosion. It had grown 2,600% in those 14 months, including growing from 2 staff members to 46 in the same time. Incredible!
Although this promising growth was not always certain. Gavin explains just how precarious the situation was at Live Chat Monitoring - it was losing money each month and it actually reached a point where Gavin could not continue paying staff. He actually wrote a letter to staff that they were closing down, and could not afford to keep going.
After sitting on the letter for 24 hours, he realised he had a great, small team and decided to regroup and have another go for 6-12 months if possible.
And the rest, they say, is history. Hear about the incredible turnaround in this businesses fortunes, how Gavin did it, the challenges he has had to overcome - as well as key advice for business owners everywhere.

Stefan interviews the owners of Traffic Diversions Group – Paul McRedmond, Stefan Shulz and Ross McDonald.
In 2012, Stefan and Ross took a calculated risk to purchase Traffic Diversions Group, with Paul buying into the business just a couple of months later. The had the vision of being the “best traffic control company in Victoria” – a vision which they have achieved and continue to strive for to this day.
All three had been involved in the traffic management industry, but they saw a big opportunity in the industry and gaps in the market that could be better served. Their focus was especially towards the “top end” of the industry where best practise was expected.
Despite significant competition, they saw an opportunities to capture the “top end” of the market.
In the three years after taking over the business (from 2012-2015), TDG has undergone enormous change and growth. • Revenue has doubled every year. • There has been a large staff turnover which has helped to create a motivated and effective team. • More HR and support staff, along with a huge increase in ‘production staff’ (i.e. “boots on the ground”)
They have aligned the team with the vision to be the “best traffic control company in Victoria” which has ensured the team are not just arms and legs in the business, but also hearts and minds.
The co-owners discuss many of the challenges they’ve had to overcome, including the division of responsibilities and decision-making, the challenges in putting together the right team in the right roles, and much more.

In this short "Think Tank" podcast, Stefan explains what it takes to build an A-Grade business.
He explores the 4 key aspects to needed to create a successful business: 1. Be an A-Grade Business Owner 2. Have an A-Grade Team 3. Having A-Grade Suppliers 4. Having A-Grade Customers
Without the first 3 things, you will not attract A-Grade customers.
Stefan then explores just what it takes be 'A-Grade'. In summary, it's about having a mindset about continuous improvement. That means you must measure everything you can, and make strategic decisions to improve all aspects of your business. You can't make those decisions based on gut-feel, they must be based on facts and evidence.

Julie Quinton shares her truly touching and inspiring personal story of her life in business.
Her husband Brian purchased the independent supermarket in January 2000. Sadly, just seven years later in August 2007 at the age of just 49, Brian died from Pancreatic Cancer.
In devastating circumstances and with no prior experience in the business, Julie took on the challenge of taking over the family business to ensure Brian’s legacy continued for the next generation of family members.
The business has not only survived, but has thrived ever since in an industry where independents are under increasing pressure and most struggle.
Quinton’s SUPA IGA is a family owned and operated independent supermarket with a core focus on providing outstanding service, fresh local produce and a passion for supporting the local community in Warrandyte. They are Warrandyte’s biggest employer with around 100 employees, and they also support every sporting club, school, kindergarten and community group in Warrandyte.
Quinton’s SUPA IGA was also the first supermarket in Australia to announce that they were no longer stocking Caged or Barn Laid eggs – only stocking Free Range eggs from ethical farms. They were also awarded the Manningham Business of the Year in 2013.
Listen to Julie share all the challenges she has faced since becoming owner of the business, how she has been able to achieve so much, how she has set up the business for success for many years to come and her plans for the future.

As a business owner, when you’re building a business you need to have a clear idea about where you’re headed and put a structure in place so that when you reach the point of an exit, you’re prepared.
Business owners need to create a strategy for success and build a business that is not just dependent on them – that it is something far bigger than them – they need to create something that builds a legacy. Business owners need to move beyond being an employee and manager in the business, to being an owner and investor in the business.
In this brain stretch discussion about exit strategies and succession planning, Stefan explores all this and more.

In this Think Tank, Stefan explores business partnerships, and how to make them successful in comparison to other alternatives.
There are many good reasons for getting into business partnerships, but in order for a successful outcome – for all parties - there are many issues you must first consider and traps you must avoid.
Partnerships are all about negotiations, so you must take your time to understand each party’s position (which is shown in their behaviour) and their interests (the motivation behind the behaviour).
You must also beware of which party has the most alternatives in a partnership negotiation, because the person with the most alternatives, has the most power in any type of negotiation.
Stefan also shares 3 components of any successful partnerships. 1. There must be a desire. If you’re convincing (hard selling) to get someone into a partnership, it will boomerang on you. Go slow to go fast!
There must be an agreement, in writing, witnessed by someone who is not cheap. Not a handshake deal. In this highly litigious environment we’re in, you must ensure there is a “business prenuptial.”
Know that there are no fixed rules – so you must ensure you have complete clarity and understanding of everyone’s responsibilities.
This episode is full of fantastic learnings for everyone who has considered getting involved in a business partnership. Enjoy!

How do you build the most successful business model in the world?
Generating repeat customers and getting referrals is the most effective and affordable way to build your business.
It costs far less to keep an existing customer, and to get referrals from those customers, compared to any other marketing technique.
Repeat and referral customers also require less work to convert to a sale because they already have some familiarity with you, and reason to trust you.
Stefan shares a three-part formula to business success for any business, and the three aspects of creating your selling propositions to have a ‘difference’ factor that keeps you ahead, or in the minority, of your industry.
Stefan also shares how important it is to leverage other people’s networks in order to grow your own business – and getting your tribe to do your selling for you.

Interview with the owners of family-run plumbing business H2Pro, Tony Welsh and Tristan Wise.
Tony started working on his own business in 2000 with the philosophy that he offered "more than ‘Bum Crack and Blue Heeler’ plumbing" - it was plumbing with professionalism.
Over the years, the business evolved to become H2-Pro plumbing. H2-Pro became a client of Business Benchmark Group in 2014, and since then has gone from strength-to-strength, including winning the Manningham Business Excellence Award back-to-back in 2014 and 2015.
Tony and Tristan discuss their business journey, some of the hurdles they've had to overcome, and more importantly, many of the successes they've had - and what has led to their success.
They discuss the importance of knowing their numbers, the attitude-shift required to spend time working ON the business, not in it, and the importance of building systems, delegating and utilizing technology.

Stefan explores the topic of business diversification. Many business owners look to diversify their business far too early, putting more and more balls in the air before really mastering one yet.
It’s important to build upon your business’s core strengths – don’t diversify your business into new areas where you spread yourself too thin and become mediocre. Instead, focus on your strengths, leverage your assets and deliver more value to your customers.
Be consistent in your excellence, build upon your repeat business and referral business, and focus on value innovation for your target market – especially in the first phases of business. Only diversify into other markets, or other segments once your core business is solid.
In other words, you need to go deep – that’s where the diamonds are found.

This week’s podcast explores the good, the bad and the ugly of business partnerships.
The idea of going into business with a partner can often appear to be a great idea - whether that’s a husband and wife team, a trio of siblings or just a couple of mates who planned their business on the back of a beer coaster!
But as the wise often say ‘all my problems today started out as a good idea’! Every partnership is different and it depends on the business and the personalities involved.
It’s vitally important to do the groundwork first, otherwise not only will the business fail, but any personal relationships will be strained.
Stefan delves into the list of questions you must ask before starting a business partnership, and discusses the strategies you must employ to make sure the partnership works for all stakeholders in the business, and ultimately for the business to succeed.
All this and more in this week’s episode.

In this special episode, Melbourne Storm's Football Manager, Frank Ponissi, shares his views on leadership and crisis management.
Ponissi is certainly no stranger to crisis management. In 2010, Melbourne Storm was found to have breached the NRL's salary cap over a period of 5 years, resulting in punishments including the stripping of Melbourne's 2007 and 2009 premierships, fines of almost $1.7 million and the team being stripped of all premiership points in 2010.
Ponissi shares how this affected all levels of the club, how he and his leadership team dealt with it, and how others at the club also stepped up to lead the club out of crisis.
Ponissi shares how the Melbourne Storm were able to come out the other side a stronger, better club (including winning Premierships in 2012 and 2017).
He discusses how the strong team culture, with a focus on accountability, has set them up for continued and sustained success.

In this episode, Stefan shares more of his famous "Stefanisms" - key advice on how to constantly improve, and ultimately succeed, in achieving and executing your vision for your business.
Key to this is a need to develop outcome-based thinking. Always ask 3 key questions: 1. What's working? 2. What's not working? 3. What will we do about it?
Stefan also discusses the need to always see things from an optimistic perspective, how to prioritize work so that you always get your most valuable tasks done, and how to stay focused on the most important aspects of your business.

If you aren't leading, nobody's following. This short episode explores the need for business owners to schedule time every week, dedicated to thinking strategically about their business.
Stefan delivers key advice about taking advantage of every opportunity in your business and in life.
Be deliberate with your strategy. Leverage your team, your peers, relationships, technology and systems and use them all to your advantage. But it's utterly important to keep your focus local, on your core, on your reputation and on your clients.
Because you can't go global, until you've got local right.
If you don't have something driving you to be your Personal Best, then chances are each day, each week and each month you are going to be spending more time in mediocrity.
But if you are clear about your opportunties, your strategic planning, and your use of time and money, you can make the decision that you can be your Personal Best.
You will be able to make 1% improvements each day. You can revolutionise and transform your business and yourself if you have the attitude of doing whatever it takes.
To ensure you're doing the right things and consistently raising the bar - take ownership, be accountable and be responsible. The data never lies.

In this special episode of our podcast, Brendan Dover from The Drain Man shares the story of his business, it's enormous growth since becoming a client with Business Benchmark Group in 2007, and offers tremendous insight into the decisions he's made on his business journey.
Brendan gives his unique perspective on a number of key topics:
Do you lead or manage for success?
The leader provides direction, encouragement and inspiration to motivate a team to achieve business success. A manager coordinates the efforts of the team and the allocation of resources to maximise efficiency in achieving individual goals.
Both these roles operate hand in hand and both are especially so during times of crisis or a choke point.
As a leader and manager, it is most important that you “walk your talk”. Stay focused on the issues that are most important– the critical few, not the trivial many.
Be brutally honest about what’s working versus what’s not working in your business, in your industry and in the mirror and take action. Again – “walk your talk”
Business isn’t easy, but it doesn’t have to be hard and when you get through a crisis celebrate it! All this and more in this week’s podcast.

Why do we hear the term 'back to basics' so frequently? Because it works!
Regardless of what you are doing, going 'back to basics' is something everyone understands. Being "brilliant at the basics" is where diamonds are found!
In this week’s episode, Stefan Kazakis delivers a key lesson in how to develop a competitive advantage in your business. First and foremost, it is about attitude.
To be able to create a competitive advantage is not about having the cheapest price, or working harder. It’s about being effective and efficient. That’s where the money is.
It’s about having the right business education and understanding to focus on the right things in your business to build better leverage.
Stefan explains the three diamonds needed to create leverage - OPT, OPM and OPN. Other people’s time, other people’s money and other people’s networks.
All this and more in this week’s podcast.

As business owners, we are bridge builders, taking target clients from a point of a problem, frustration and challenge to a place of solutions, problems being solved and freedom.
The bricks with which you build your bridge are all inspired by “re” words: Relationships, results, reputation, reengagement, reactivation, reliability, retention, referrals.
It’s obvious that people will do business with people they like, and most importantly, trust.
So it’s integral that the fusion of traditional and digital is all about having the ability to build high-tech systems that supports high-touch, which is all about being personable and building trust.
There are three vital principles in creating a high-tech system. 1. It must be scalable. 2. It must be growing and relevant 3. Most importantly, it must have saleability today.
All this and more is discussed in this week’s podcast.
As you market your product or service, be sure to share your success stories.
Marketing is something that happens every day, so it’s vital that you get better at telling your story. Genuinely believe in who you are and what you stand for – your core values – and demonstrate trust and genuine authenticity.
Learn how to deliver your “elevator pitch”. The “rule of threes” gives you just 3 seconds to buy the right for 30 seconds. 3 minutes to get 30 minutes. 30 minutes to get 3 hours. How do you make the most of these few moments to stand out from your competitors and establish your unique selling proposition to your chosen target market?
How do you reach a point where your community speaks far louder than you about what you do and what you stand for?
All this and more is discussed in this week’s podcast.

In our first episode we ask can you improve by 220% in one year? If you did improve by 220% in one year, what would that mean for you and your business? 220% may sound a lot but how about if you only had to improve 1% every day. Does that seem manageable?
With 220 working days in a year - indeed it does. Listen in to hear Stefan Kazakis share why it is important to strive for this each day, each week and each month and how being at your personal best should be non-negotiable for both you and your team.
