Allen Sussman was a board-certified endocrinologist in private practice for 34 years and clinical assistant professor at the University of Washington. As cofounder and president of Rainier Clinical Research Center, Dr. Sussman was involved in hundreds of evidence-based studies and the development of ground-breaking technology for the treatment of diabetes. Dr. Sussman is the author of Saving the Art of Medicine, which shares his evolution as a physician—what he calls his “progression from bookish to mindful to heartfelt.” He insists physicians are becoming too focused on clinical studies and pharmaceuticals and forgetting how to practice humility, collaborate with patients, listen with compassion, and heed inner wisdom. Dr. Sussman has learned from experience that connecting with patients is as integral to healing as science.

Did you know your dry skin could be from something you’re eating? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young America Medical Minute. People don’t usually think food allergies when it comes to skin irritations. Unfortunately, they can go through life with dry skin or pesky itching and figure that’s just a fact of life, but it doesn’t have to be. Common foods like dairy, corn, wheat, or nuts could be the culprit. Food allergies don’t always cause the fatal reactions that we most commonly associate an allergy with. Chronic exposure to foods you are allergic to or sensitive to can cause long term inflammation. While there are tests for food allergies, you can also try simply eliminating things from your diet. Take food items out one at a time, but be sure to read labels so you aren’t getting trace amounts. Then reintroduce them slowly, one by one. Eventually, you may just find your answer and get relief from those skin issues. This Stay Young America! Do you skip the egg yolks and prefer just the whites? If so, you may be missing out on a number of health benefits. This is Judy Gaman and this your Stay Young America Medical Minute. Egg yolks used to get a bad rap. For a while, doctors told patients to limit egg yolks because of the fat and the cholesterol. Now, we have a better understanding of how the benefits of yokes far outweigh the any negatives. Egg yolks contain important properties, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-cancer. As for being bad for your heart – not true – research shows that they actually help protect the heart and help maintain a healthy blood pressure. Even if you don’t have time to make scrambled eggs for breakfast, you can keep boiled and peeled eggs in the fridge for breakfast or a snack on the run. This Stay Young America! Endo—what? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young America medical minute. It is estimated that around 1 in 10 women in the US suffer from endometriosis. Endometriosis occurs when uterine lining grows outside of the uterus and into other parts of the body. Symptoms of endometriosis include: excessive bleeding, pain during intercourse, painful periods, pain with bowel movements or urination, and infertility. A definitive diagnosis can be made by laparoscopy. If you suffer from this disease, try using a heating pad, over the counter pain relievers, light exercise, and a pelvic massage to help with the pain. Studies have also shown that changing your diet can also help with symptom control. Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of endometriosis. This Stay Young America! Want to live longer? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young America medical minute. In today’s world it is convenient to stop at a drive through on your way to work or during the lunch hour, but you may want to rethink your meal. Turns out, cutting back on salt intake may help you live longer. Fast food chains and restaurants are notorious for putting extra salt in their food. Our bodies really only need about 500mg of sodium per day. That is half of the amount of sodium found in a can of chicken broth! A study published in the American Heart Association Journal states that eating less than 1500mg of sodium per day can lower your chances of cardiovascular disease. Pay attention to the labels on your food and watch your sodium intake. Your health depends on it. This Stay Young America! Did you know that sunscreen may actually inhibit your production of Vitamin D? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. People who suffer from auto-immune diseases like Lupus and Celiac disease are already at a disadvantage when it comes to keeping their vitamin D levels at adequate levels. New research from College of Osteopathic Medicine at Touro University California suggests that sunscreen use on patients as well as those with diabetes, contributes to nearly 1 million cases of vitamin D deficiency internationally. According to the research, sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher can reduce the body's vitamin D-3 production by 99 percent. But we all know we need sunscreen to prevent skin cancer, so their recommendation is to spending 5 to 30 minutes in midday sun twice each week, without sunscreen. This Stay Young America! Are you getting enough Vitamin D? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young America medical minute. Vitamin D is absorbed through sunlight and certain foods and is necessary for bone and heart health. Without it, the body can’t absorb calcium. Due to a lack of sunlight, Vitamin D deficiency peaks during Fall and Winter. Being deficient can cause symptoms like fatigue, back pain, depression, and hair loss. Having a deficiency can even increase the chance of developing Rickets, childhood asthma, and certain types of cancers. Talk to your doctor if you’re experiencing symptoms of a Vitamin D deficiency. A simple blood test can help your doctor determine if supplements are needed.

Is the grass really greener on the other side? It may be if you played on it more! This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young America medical minute. Nature can be a powerful thing. It has a way of calming our minds in a stressful world. With depression on the rise in the US, it may be exactly what the population needs. New research out of Aarhus University in Denmark found that people who grew up in close contact with nature were less likely to develop mental health problems in the future. It actually lowered their risk by fifty five percent! So, what are you waiting for? Go for a jog, play in the pool, or break out that dusty tent. Get off of your phone and computer. Get close to nature again! It’s just what the doctor ordered.

Do you suffer from IBD? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young America medical minute. IBD, also known as irritable bowel disease, is caused by inflammation of the digestive tract and affects nearly 1.6 million people in the US. It’s an umbrella term used for a variety of different intestinal problems. IBD can cause diarrhea, bloody stool, reduced appetite, weight loss, and fatigue. A new study out University of Southern California found that a fasting-mimicking diet can help with IBD symptoms. The diet in the study lasted for four days and it included lowering caloric intake to 50% of what the person would normally eat on the first day and then down to 10% on days two through four. Talk to your doctor if you are struggling with symptoms of IBD.

Do you suffer from psoriasis? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young America medical minute. A new study out of Paracelsus Medical University suggests that a ketogenic, or keto diet, may not be a good idea for people suffering from psoriasis. Most people follow a keto diet for weight loss, but research has that it can also help in protecting against cognitive decline and improving type 2 diabetes symptoms. However, in the study, they found that a keto diet with high amounts of coconut oil can increase skin inflammation. But this only happens when it’s combined with other healthy fats like avocados, olive oil, fish, and nuts. So, if you have psoriasis and are planning on jumping on the keto bandwagon, be sure to limit your coconut intake.

Did you know that craving food and craving human interaction may be linked? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young America Medical Minute. It’s no secret that social distancing and isolation can have an impact on mental health. A new study out of MIT showed that loneliness and hunger may come from the same part of the brain. The study included 40 participants, most of whom were college students. Functional MRIs were taken of the brain after 10 hours of fasting and after 10 hours of social isolation. Surprisingly, researchers found a small region in the middle of the brain called the substantia nigra reacted the same way during both circumstances. Now this is where it gets interesting, for people who already considered themselves socially isolating- that part of the brain didn’t react as much as it did for those who were more social. It’ll definitely be interesting to see the effects of social isolation and distancing in future studies. Are your eyes telling you it’s time to take a break? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young America medical minute. Eye strain can occur after looking at a screen for prolonged periods of time. It can lead to blurred vision, dry eyes, and headaches. The American Optometric Association and the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends the 20-20-20 rule. Take a 20 second break every 20 minutes. During those 20 seconds, focus on an object that is at least 20 feet away. Nothing to focus on? Try closing your eyes for 20 seconds. Doing either of these gives your eye muscles a break. You can also try changing your computer’s lighting settings or reducing the glare on screen. Have you or a loved one been diagnosed with breast cancer? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young America medical minute. A close second to skin cancer, breast cancer is one of the most common types diagnosed in women. In fact, roughly 1 in 8 women will be suffer from breast cancer during their lifetime and that number doubles if you have a first-degree relative who has been diagnosed. So, how can you reduce your chances? 85% of diagnosed women don’t have a family history of breast cancer. The cancer is caused by new genetic mutations. Diet and exercise can help reduce the risk of these. It’s important to maintain a healthy weight by eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Exercise can be tricky if you have a sedentary job but try to aim for at least 10,000 steps a day. Early detection is key so don’t dodge your mammograms or monthly self-exams. “Pressing Health”- Health news that’s fresh off the press. A new research study coordinated out of the Lund University in Sweeden and in conjunction with American and Columbian centers has found new hope for the early detection of Alzheimer’s Disease. Measuring blood levels of phospho-tau217 (p-tau217), one of the tau proteins found in tangles, could prove to be a relatively sensitive and accurate indicator of both plaques and tangles. These are the hallmarks of Alzheimer's. This blood test could allow us to detect it with great accuracy in living people. P-tau217 biomarkers in those who have a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s may help identify the disease 20 years before symptoms. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/07/200729114404.htm

Mental illness in America is at an all-time high. The isolation and changes that came with the pandemic have lonely and sometime devastating consequences for those not even infected with Covid. Over one-third of U.S. adults self-identified as clinically anxious or depressed; and experts have predicted that 75,000 additional deaths may be caused by the associated despair.
Our guest today, Terri Cheney is the author of the New York Times bestseller Manic: A Memoir, which has been translated into eight foreign languages. Terri’s writings and commentary about mental health have also been featured in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post, and NPR. Her ongoing blog for Psychology Today has received over one million views. BOOK – Modern Madness: An Owner’s Manual:

21:22 “Pressing Health”- Health news that’s fresh off the press. Could your divorce affect your children’s hormones later in life? Turns out that it can. A new study fromBaylor university found that children whose parents divorce during childhood have lower oxytocin levels later in life and may have trouble forming bonds and building relationships. Here’s the details of the study: 128 people enrolled in the study ages 18 to 62, all from two colleges in the Southeast United States. 27.3% of those indicated their parents were divorced. Participants were asked to empty their bladders and then they were given a 16-ounce bottle of water to drink. Next, they filled out questionnaires about their childhood, as well as their current social functioning. The questions asked things about their parents' style, including affection, protection, indifference, over-control and abuse; and their own levels of confidence, discomfort with closeness, need for approval and their styles of relationships and caregiving. When they were done with the questionnaires, they had to give a urine sample, which researchers analyzed for oxytocin concentrations. Those whose childhood experience included their parents' divorce, had substantially lower oxytocin levels. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/09/200909100230.htm

Guest: Mike Schade
We’ve done several shows about how chemicals in your environment may be contributing to your poor health, but nothing got me more than a recent study that shows the wrappers in fast food restaurants are just as bad.
Mike Schade is the Mind the Store Campaign Director for Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families where he coordinates a national U.S. campaign challenging the nation’s leading retailers to transform the marketplace away from hazardous chemicals and towards safer alternatives. He has been working for nearly twenty years to safeguard American families from dangerous chemicals and polluting facilities.

Title: Why the Affordable Care Act Did Not Make Insurance More Affordable
Guest: Jim Vollmer, MHA, GBA & Employer Benefit Solutions President
On March 23, 2010, the signing of the Affordable Care Act (often referred to as ACA or Obamacare) rules were established for employers and insurance carriers. Why is it that those rules did everything BUT make insurance more affordable? To answer that 1question, we’ve asked Jim Vollmer the President of Employer Benefit Solutions to come in the studio and walk us through this.
1:00 Jim- What attracted you to work in insurance?
1:50 Jim- How has insurance changed over the past 18 years ago?
2:20 From a doctors perspective, how has practicing medicine under insurance changed over the past 20 years.
5:17 Quality of care- not boxes being checked, but decisions by the providers
8:00 Socialized Medicine, what it was like for Dr. Gaman to practice medicine in Canada
12:25 Preventative care is included in insurance plans, people not using them
13:15 Affordable Care Act- originated to help people with insurance, but it's not very affordable unless partially subsidized by government
14:55 Insurance companies making record profits, why do rates continue to go up?
15:55 Shut down of economy caused utilization of insurance to go down, so for over 50 employees- rates not rising
17:47 Unwrapping the Affordable Care Act
21:53 High risk pools
23:30 Guaranteed Coverage
25:53 Price increases correlate with government coverage mandates
27:23 What should insurance actually cover? Groceries, massages, etc?
31:11 Insurance companies making large, over-projected profits- should they divide excess and rebate it back?

33:47 “Pressing Health”- Health news that’s fresh off the press. We’ve talked before about the differences between brown fat and white fat, but as a refresher, brown fat burns calories and helps fight obesity. The problem is that brown fat is no longer in abundance as we age. But thanks to some genetic modification of white fat, through CRISPR, researchers at the Joslin Diabetes Center have found that potentially transplanting these fat cells, patients may be able to reverse diabetes. The cells (human brown-like) fat cells have been given the acronym, HUMBLE. Mice given the HUMBLE transplants displayed much greater sensitivity to insulin and ability to clear glucose from the blood, the two things that type two diabetics have trouble doing. The pre-clinical trials are promising, so this is the research to watch! https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/08/200826141413.htm

22:20 “Pressing Health”- Health news that’s fresh off the press. Researchers at the University of Bonn have discovered a receptor in mice that regulates both the size of our abdomen and the size of our muscles, two things that change as we age. It looks like this may also exist in humans. The study, which also involved researchers from Spain, Finland, Belgium, Denmark and the USA, was published in the journal Cell Metabolism. There’s an A2B receptors in brown adipose tissue. And you may remember from our previous shows that brown fat is the good fat, the kind we need. Tt turns out that the more A2B a mouse produces, the more heat it generates because these antennas increase brown fat activity, which burns the bad fat. Despite their increased fat burning, the animals weigh hardly less than mice with fewer receptors, but they appear slimmer because they have less overall fat and more lean muscle. If indeed this research holds true in humans it could mean a major breakthrough in prolonging our youth. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/06/200625115916.htm

Even people who may be sheltering at home with little exposure, can have increased anxiety because they don’t have outlets, such as their usual rituals to help tame the stress.
