Hi! We are Kelly McElroy and Jason Schneemann, Co-hosts of sustainabiliME. We love learning about everything related to sustainability and the environment. In this podcast we will do just that. We will showcase a cool story, project, idea, etc. related to this topic as well as discuss at least one thing the average person could consider implementing in their own life related to sustainability.
Today Jason and Kelly will be evaluating their carbon footprint now that they have moved to a new house in a new town. According to the Nature Conservancy, "The average carbon footprint for a person in the United States is 16 tons, one of the highest rates in the world. Globally, the average carbon footprint is closer to 4 tons. To have the best chance of avoiding a 2℃ rise in global temperatures, the average global carbon footprint per year needs to drop to under 2 tons by 2050." In order to make progress, you first need to measure where you are at, so that's exactly what Kelly and Jason are about to do.
This is part of a decarbonization series where Kelly and Jason will evaluate the various ways individuals can reduce their carbon emissions in their own home. Topics that will be covered include heat pumps, induction stove tops, solar, and more!

We're Back! That's right, after taking a break, Kelly and Jason are back in the podcast booth... or at least the living room couch recording the podcast. After moving to the Metro Detroit area, they decided to dive into the topic of home decarbonization from weatherization, HVAC, kitchen appliances and more. In today's episode, they will be introducing the topic for this series. Since this will take some research, episodes will not drop every week as they did in the past, however they will do their best not to have a 4 month drought again anytime soon. Today Jason and Kelly will be providing an overview of the recent COP 28 that took place between November 30th to December 12th in Dubai. This Conference of Parties (COP) gathered to discuss all things climate change related. Specifically, they discussed reducing fossil fuel usage, loss and damage, adaptation, and food. Today I’ll be chatting with Jeff Grasser, Senior Resort Operations & Sustainability Manager for Copper Mountain Ski Resort located in Frisco, Colorado. It’s really exciting to be releasing this episode today, because as of this week, the 2023-2024 ski season at Copper is officially upon us. What’s also exciting is the fact that Copper Mountain is truly serious about their sustainability efforts through their Play Forever campaign. Jeff will be covering all of the pillars of that campaign including energy, waste, land, and community. He will be really diving into the land preservation and enhancement techniques that enhance biodiversity and carbon sequestration on the mountain.

Today I'll be chatting with Geoff Dembicki, author of The Petroleum Papers, Inside the Far-Right Conspiracy to Cover Up Climate Change. In this book, Geoff talks about how he dove into oil industry documents to understand the disinformation campaigns that many of the largest oil companies organized around their industry and climate change. This book was named a Washington Post Best Book of the Year in 2022. This is all very timely as a new study was just released this month in Science showing that Exxon scientists predicted global warming as the company cast doubts. Check out the Petroleum Papers here.

Today I’ll be chatting with Ben Collier, CEO of The Farmlink Project. Farmlink is working to decrease both food waste and hunger by connecting farmers to food banks. I first heard about The Farmlink Project during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic when they were rescuing fresh food from farms, that would have otherwise gone to landfill, to feed hungry people. The work that they do is amazing and I’m excited to learn more!

Today Jason and I will provide a high level overview of COP27. COP aka the Conference of Parties is a United Nations conference on climate change where over 35,000 participants, including over 100 heads of States and Governments, meet to discuss climate change problems and solutions. The goal is to meet the Pair Climate Accord of limiting the increase of global temperatures to 2 degrees C with the hopeful target being 1.5 degrees C. This was a two week event that took place in early November in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

Climate activist Kyle Meyaard-Schaap understands this feeling from personal experience. But in his years of speaking to and equipping Christians to work for climate action, he's seen the trend begin to shift. More and more young Christians are waking up to the realities of climate change. They want to help, but they're not sure how. Through stories from the field, theological and scriptural exploration, and practical advice, Meyaard-Schaap offers hope to Christians paralyzed by the scale of the crisis, helping us turn our paralysis into meaningful action. Today I’ll be chatting with Darraugh Collins, Site Director of Food Rescue US Detroit. Food Rescue US is all about rescuing healthy food that might otherwise go to landfill and instead donate it to organizations helping to feed people. They recuse food from various donors such as restaurants and grocery stores. Also, the majority of their food goes towards tackling food insecurity, which is significantly higher in Detroit compared to the national average. I’m so glad Food Rescue US Detroit is keeping food out of landfills and is instead feeding our community.

Today I will be talking with Dr. Nancy Love, a professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan, about a special project taking place in the peonies gardens at the Nichols Arboretum which is located at the University of Michigan. She and her team are working to create a circular economy by utilizing nutrient rich urine to create fertilizer. They are applying this fertilizer on a few beds within the peonies gardens as part of their study. So, they really are putting the pee in peonies!

Today I will be diving into the world tour that Coldplay is currently on called "Music of the Spheres". A while back, I heard about these kinetic dance floors that they were going to have on their tour that would allow the audience to generate power through dancing, and so I wanted to check out the rest of their sustainability initiatives. Turns out they have a ton! In fact, they are aiming to reduce their emissions by 50% compared to their last world tour back in 2016-2017. Today I will be talking with Luis Chen from Wormies in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Wormies is a composting business that specializes in worm composting.
Wormies uses food scraps from over 300 households in Grand Rapids as well as local businesses, farms and stables to make clean, microbial rich worm castings. Wormies vermicompost has microbiology teaming with fungi and beneficial bacteria that is indigenous to Michigan beneficial for our Michigan farms and gardens. By carefully sourcing all of our raw inputs, we avoid persistent pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics and microplastics, a common problem in most large scale composting operations.
In the last year alone, Wormies has diverted and composted over 290 cubic yards of organics from going into landfills. We sell vermicompost, but have also started to make our own living soil blends, which is a specialty potting soil focused on beneficial microbiology. Living soil is an emerging trend in the cannabis space that has the potential to totally shift growing methods toward more sustainable, cleaner, and ultimately more healthy growing practice.
In addition, Luis is dedicated to community education and partnering with small urban farms and gardens to help them serve the community, which is why he often donates worm compost to these places while offering classes and teaching kids about composting in schools and community groups.

For those of you who don’t know, St. Joseph is located in Southwest Michigan along the shores of Lake Michigan. It is about 90 miles from Chicago and has a population of about 8300 people. St. Joseph is known for its beaches, sand dunes, orchards, and vineyards making it a very important place to focus on sustainability.

For this town hall, I had 8 friends watch 1-2 candidates and provide their opinions on what they liked, didn’t like, and what was confusing. The whole focus was only on what was said during this town hall.
