The House of Representatives is made up of 435 members, each representing a congressional district. The Senate, on the other hand, is made up of 100 members, two from each state. This difference in size gives the House a more direct connection to the people, while the Senate gives each state equal representation.
Another key difference between the House and the Senate is the way they are elected. Members of the House are elected for two-year terms, while members of the Senate are elected for six-year terms. This means that the House is more responsive to the changing will of the people, while the Senate is more stable and long-term oriented.
These differences in size, election terms, and composition have a significant impact on the way the House and the Senate function. The House is more likely to be the chamber of innovation, while the Senate is more likely to be the chamber of deliberation. The House is also more likely to be the chamber of conflict, while the Senate is more likely to be the chamber of compromise.

Mr. Hill is a 3-time prostate cancer survivor and is here to tell his story so that others may benefit from his knowledge. Prostate cancer is a silent killer, particularly in the African-American community. However, it is also a disease that if caught early, men can survive. With early testing, diagnosis and treatment, men can live a normal life. So why is it not talked about more? Especially amongst the black community? Perhaps the reluctance to visit the doctor comes from the fear of being sick, having ED issues or being told to abstain from sexual activity, is what holds people back. But these are temporary issues when your life is on the line. Catching prostate cancer in its early stages is the key to survival. But it can’t be done until it becomes a more mainstream conversation within the community. Tests such as the PSA test are the key to survival. This can begin as early as age 38 or 40 and it saves lives. When prostate cancer is talked about openly amongst families, at church and in the community, more men will feel comfortable taking action. Health issues should never be taboo. It is our right and duty to ourselves and our loved ones to take the steps needed to ensure survival rates. There are two types of diabetes; Type 1 which is genetic and Type 2 which is often a later in life onset and is more closely linked to lifestyle choices. Although each are different in terms of onset, both greatly affect daily life. Being mindful of nutrition, avoiding alcohol and checking one’s blood sugar either manually or via a continuous glucose pump all play a big part. If not taken care of properly, the body can deteriorate very quickly. Problems such as kidney and pancreas failure and constant pain are just some of the issues that arise. Ultimately, if not taken care of, diabetes can send the patient into a coma. This is a serious issue that makes it worth understanding the preventative steps. Regular health check-ups, avoiding a diet that is high in saturated fats and regular gentle exercise are all important measures to avoid diabetes. Now, millions of people use Amazon for the convenience, ease and often better pricing than their local stores. So many advantages for the consumer but what about the other side of the coin? Merchants who sell on Amazon, cannot house their goods in the warehouse and many brick and mortar stores have gone under because it’s impossible to compete with Amazon. And most recently, there have been allegations of horrible working conditions for the employees during the Covid-19 pandemic. So how does all this reflect on Jeff Bezos as a global leader?

After coming home from Italy with grand ideas about unique ways to sell coffee, Schultz was knocked down by the powers that be. He left to start his own company but in the end was approached to buy Starbucks just a few years later. After buying it in 1987 for 3.8 million, Schultz grew the company to an international heavyweight across 75 countries. Starbucks fans tend to be hardcore super fans while those who aren’t, are often at the other end of the spectrum. As a company, they are known for their incredible commitment to healthcare for their employees. However, they aren’t always up front about everything. Starbucks has been known to use stale coffee beans and hide the taste behind sugar and other sweeteners. Even more disturbing, Starbucks has recently been accused of standing on the wrong side of racial issues, both on an employee level and on a grand scale company level. With this in mind, how does Starbucks really measure up as a leader?
Today on episode twenty-three of the Doneson podcast, an in-depth study into Fred Smith of the FedX empire! FedX changed the course of the transportation and logistics on a world-wide scale when it was founded by Mr. Smith in 1971. The idea for an overnight delivery service stemmed from a disagreement with a professor at Yale. After that, Smith developed the business model that ended up being a game changer for the delivery industry. He continued aiming high by buying up Kinkos in order to compete with UPS and instituting overnight delivery between Asia and the US. But things weren’t always easy for Fred Smith and sometimes he resorted to outlandish methods to keep his business afloat. The most notorious being taking the company’s last $5000 to Vegas and betting it all on a blackjack game. Fortunately, it turned out in his favor and he won $27,000 and thereby saved his company. However, not everyone would agree that risks like that are worth it. A known member of the Yale secret society, Smith had his hand in a lot of powerful pockets, but is that the best approach to leadership and success?

P.T Barnum was a showman and a politician but was perhaps most well-known for his world-famous Barnum & Bailey Circus. His motto was that no one got ahead by being the same as everyone else, and with that in mind, he definitely was an original. Known for creating outlandish events that entertained the masses-his most famous being that of the 161-year-old blind slave who supposedly was the nurse to George Washington. Although obviously false, it was a success nonetheless.
Barnum made his mark by selling tickets to scandalous shows featuring the bearded lady, the human caterpillar and Jumbo the elephant, just to name a few. He also proved the safety of the Brooklyn bridge by walking elephants and camels across it and introduced American society to higher culture by bringing over a European opera singer. If ever there was an opportunity to be in the spotlight, P.T Barnum took it and made it his own. However, in doing so he also created large scale hoaxes that duped the public. It raises the question-Is entertainment at the price of truth, acceptable? Was P.T Barnum just an upscale con artist or a true entertainer?

And now for Madam CJ Walker, a true entrepreneurial pioneer for African-American women in the early part of the 20th century. Recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the first female self-made millionaire, Madam CJ Walker invented a line of hair products specifically designed for African-American hair. An early feminist and women’s liberation activist, Madam Walker ‘s goal was to help black women from all over the country improve their own financial well-being by selling her products. In fact, years later, her door-to-door sales system was actually appropriated by cosmetics giant Avon.
However, there’s a flip side to everything and Madam CJ Walker’s story is no exception. She was also accused of stealing the recipe blueprint for her hair care products. As well, some say that her products were the original source of imposing white beauty standards on black women. So, this brings us to an important question; is CJ Walker a leader to follow? Does her success negate her alleged methods?

Known as the first American billionaire and the founder of Standard Oil company in 1870, he once controlled 90% of oil in the United States. His wealth grew along with the importance of gasoline during the early part of the twentieth century. However, he was not just an oil tycoon, but also an important philanthropist. He donated money to educational, religious and scientific developments. His efforts helped to eradicate disease through the developments of vaccines that saved millions of lives in America. He also gave millions to Spellman College which was a college founded to educate black women in Atlanta. The college bears the name of his wife Laura Spellman-a well-known abolitionist. However, J.D Rockefeller was also involved in various scandals. One being that his company was court ordered to be dismantled after it was in violation of anti-trust laws. Tax evasion, engaging in predatory pricing, using his charity’s money for his own gain and many other financial issues were often brought to public attention. But none of these as much as the Ludlow massacre. J.D Rockefeller was known for cheating the miners. He eventually forced them out of their shacks and orchestrated the murder of 21 people including women and children from the miner’s families, in order to control them and force them to bide by his rules. How do these actions reflect his leadership?

With over 2.7 billion dollars of net worth, Oprah is the first female, African-American, billionaire the country has ever seen. Although she started early in her career with journalism, she took over the airwaves as a talk show host whose show eventually was syndicated. Oprah is also known as an actress, producer and philanthropist. Famous for giving away extravagant gifts to her viewers such as cars and other life changing gifts-Oprah has been loved by many. Her mass appeal and influence allowed her to create “no-names” into massive brand names. People such as Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz just to name a few, became household names due to their start on Oprah’s show. She has had iconic interviews with celebrities and world leaders and turns any book in her book club into a bestseller. However, it hasn’t always been easy street for Oprah. She struggled with her weight publicly for the majority of her life and was most notably criticized for her portrayal of black men in the media. Some think that she has favored white men and casts a continual shadow of doubt over African-American males. She was also blamed and sued after a young man killed himself after watching her show on autoerotic asphyxiation. These incidents raise particular questions about her leadership and the causes that she supports. How much is she responsible for?

With a net worth of 250 million and 21 Grammy awards, success has definitely been on his side. However, the majority of his fortune comes from his 2016 partnership between his brand Yeezy and with Adidas. Perhaps his choices and success are because he is a great leader or maybe they just are a result of a sensory condition that he was diagnosed called synesthesia-a condition where the senses mix signals in the brain and produce things such as colors when sound is heard. But despite these successes, there is also the other side of the coin. Kanye is a college dropout and has a history of being outspoken in a way that does not endear him to the public. He infamously interrupted and insulted Taylor Swift at the VMA awards and called out George Bush for “not caring about black people” during Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. His public behaviour is often erratic and void of reason. Are these the signs of a true leader?

He owns sports teams, restaurants and is a known philanthropist, environmentalist and conservative supporter who donates time and money to his preferred causes. Despite all this, he is also a known womanizer who was caught by his then-wife Jane Fonda, cheating only one month into their marriage. Ted Turner has also made some questionable public remarks about the Chinese culture, which is perhaps a reason to pause and consider his ethics? As well, since Time Warner merger disaster, the Turner brand has definitely taken a downturn. So, is Ted Turner still the leader he once was?

Warren Buffet is universally known as the most successful investor and because of that, he is the 4th wealthiest man in the world. The question is -how did he obtain that status? As the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway – a massive holding company that owns a multitude of private and public companies, Mr. Buffett has amassed a fortune by buying entire companies and controlling the dividends. Mr. Buffett has been a workaholic his entire life and still works to this day at 89 years of age. He credits much of his success with spending 80% of his day reading and keeping up with current events. But his commitment to work didn’t come without consequences. Although he was married for 52 years, the last years were spent separated from his wife. He has been known to say that leaving his marriage for another woman was his biggest mistake. And then, there was the insider trading issue at Wells Fargo which prompted Buffett to sell many of his shares of the company. Despite his company Berkshire Hathaway owning Wells Fargo-Mr. Buffett did acknowledge that that when there’s a problem, there’s never just one. The only thing to decide on is this -is Warren Buffett’s overall financial success the only thing that matters as a leader?

Many modern-day directors and film writers still use his techniques such as the MacGuffin, to ensure a swift moving suspenseful plot. With films like Rear Window, The Birds and Psycho under his belt, Hitchcock made a name for himself in suspense and ultimately thrilling terror. He also was the reason that theatres switched from showing films on a loop to official start times. For Hitchcock this was done for artistic reasons but it proved to be a sound business choice all around. He did however battle with Hollywood censors and often had to distract them with controversial shots in order to keep others that were more important to him. He did what needed to be done in order to have his vision completed. Despite his accomplishments and innovations in film, Hitchcock never won an Oscar. What does this say about him as a leader?

Despite being the winner of five Academy Awards for directing by the age of thirty-six, Coppola’s directing methods were not always appreciated by the studios. So much so that he was nearly fired from The Godfather on multiple occasions. The studios wanted a more typical gangster movie and Coppola’s style was taking it down a darker road. Despite the tension and unorthodox methods that he used -such as a real horse’s head; his work finally prevailed and brought everyone involved, much success. On a personal level though his open critiques for the Marvel series and other comic books adaptations, often puts a damper on his image. Is it his way or the highway? He insisted in his Congressional speech that this was the destruction and defamation of art but then proceeded to do the same thing that he advocated against. Where does this leave his integrity?

From concertos to operas, Mozart left a legacy of music to the world, that is still revered to this day. However, his personal life was the complete opposite of his successful career. He suffered from borderline personality disorder that left him prone to fits of anger and uncontrolled behavior. With a drinking problem and the tendency to overspend, he had to lean on extended family for financial support. An original from Mississippi, Waters took the delta blues and added the sounds of the electric guitar thus putting his own unique spin on the music of the time. As the first record label to be owned by African-Americans, Gordy opened the door for many artists and broke through the previously existing glass ceilings. But it wasn’t all roses. Gordy was sued by his production team for failing to pay them royalties and his reputation for shady deals and scamming his musicians and writers, was common knowledge. The reality was, that although he launched the careers of many, his methods were often not on the up and up. So, the question is, do his accomplishments outweigh his shady methods?

Welcome to our last episode of the season! We’re signing off with a leader that much of the American public felt was one of the most captivating leaders of all time: President Barack Obama. Obama changed the face of our country by instilling programs that had as a mandate to help those who needed it most. With the introduction of Obamacare, health care became accessible to almost 95% of the country. President Obama also saved millions of jobs in the automotive industry with his economic stimulus package. And finally, his secret military operation was the one who finally found and destroyed Bin laden, the world’s most wanted terrorist. However, there are two sides to every coin…President Barack Obama’s programs were intended to be affordable. Once in place though, unintended results began to pile up. The notion of affordable health care seemed impossible as the costs of Medicare skyrocketed. Income assistance programs were overwhelmed with more applicants than expected. So, this begs the question…when solutions seem great on paper but do not perform the same way in reality, are they still worthwhile? Join the gang for episode #20 and find out!

He is mostly known for being the founder of Ford Motors and changing the entire concept of transportation for the 20th century. However, there was another side to Ford. One that was in direct conflict with how he changed the world by revolutionizing moving assembly lines and his desire to ensure that all his workers received fair compensation. That other side was his anti-Semitic views and ties to Nazi Germany. Although opposed to the war initially, Ford seized the opportunity to make a profit on it and share his prevalent anti-Semitism with the world.

Reagan was Republican president who initiated a space military system nicknamed Star Wars, appointed the first woman to the Supreme Court and yet was an FBI informant contracted to spy on Hollywood’s elite. Reagan also turned a blind eye to cocaine smuggling into the U.S and was opposed to civil rights, voting rights and fair housing rights and even supported apartheid in South Africa. Although being known as a people’s person, Reagan also had direct links to Sewergate -which was a known to cause more environmental damage than it was supposed to help. A leader that has a conflicting past despite a few honorable moments.

From securing more land for the country from Napoleon, to selling his personal library to Congress-his motives seemed to be directed towards the greater good of the country. However, despite the beliefs he claimed to have; he was still a slave owner, said disparaging comments about slaves and was known to have fathered six children with one of his slaves. So, the question is…was his behavior a sign of the times or something more? Which side was he really on?

It’s Harriet Tubman- one of the most famous of all the Underground Railroad conductors. Freeing slaves was her job but it wasn’t an easy one. Tubman used surprising methods like her singing voice as well as more unorthodox ones like a pistol, to ensure that her plans were carried out. Despite being the first and only woman to hold this position, the amount of people she freed, is still up for debate. Tubman makes for an intriguing and enlightening leader that is more than worth discussing.

The man who was the inspiration for the blockbuster film-Iron Man. Musk is only the second man in Silicon Valley to bring three companies to a billion dollars. All this while creating a new venture to bring transportation underground and solve the issue of traffic in our cities. However, for everything positive there’s always a negative and Elon Musk’s OCD tendencies often keep him focused more on one than the other. Operations under him tend to be disastrous, not to mention his idea of implanting all humans with a microchip so we can keep up with technology.

This was a president who established two of the most important facets of modern life that offer protection to our citizens. He instituted the Welfare Act and established Social Security. He was also known for a particularly famous speech he gave at Pearl Harbor. It wasn’t all good though, FDR also opposed anti-lynching legislation, denied European Jews refuge- ultimately sending them back to their death during the Holocaust. Last but certainly not least, FDR was also the reason for redlining in the Homeowners Loan Corporation which denied credit to many Americans on the basis of complete and utter racism.

This was a huge acknowledgment that healed the wounds of many. He was also known for creating the Department of Education, which created loans and allowed all children access to schooling through free bussing despite their family’s economic stature. Another interesting fact was Jimmy Carter’s conviction that he had been witness to a passing UFO. On the flip side, he admitted to committing adultery in his heart despite being in a 76-year marriage and had family members who made his political image challenging at times. He also gave away the Panama Canal which brought up conflicting points of contention for many.
Today on episode eleven of the Doneson podcast! We examine the inner workings of Ulysses S. Grant -the “S” in his name being a mistake that stuck with him his entire career. Grant was a Republican President back 1867 who succeed in dismantling the first era of the KKK. He brought positive changes to voters by prohibiting discrimination towards them by state officials with the Force Act of 1870. Despite these advancements, Grant was also known to be a drunk and have no political experience before becoming president. Sadly, he was also the cause of one of the bloodiest wars between Native Americans and the government. The Great Sioux War, also known as the Black Hills War -left yet another huge scar on American history.

In opposition, his idea as the first leader to incorporate women as soldiers failed during his time but has proven successful in the years since. Du Bois was an interesting leader both on account of his work as a historian and author, as well as a civil rights activist and Pan-Africanist. This was a man who co-founded the NAACP, was the first African-American man to earn a PHD from Harvard and even coined the term “The Talented Tenth”. We will discuss his beliefs about how patience was all that was needed to turn things around. Due to this belief, he was never recorded as an active participant in any of the civil rights movement marches or protests. Despite his non-violent and incredible passive approach, it’s worth noting that DuBois actually joined the communist party -which makes for some dynamic debates about his true intentions.
