Quarantine.....there are varying magnitudes of lock down. Each state has different interpretations of what their citizens are not to do.

My brother, Daniel McCarthy makes his Primer debut to talk about what is going on in his state of Michigan. He is leading an initiative at his law firm to address Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer with assistance from his clients on a proposal to re-open the State following April 30, 2020. A group of his clients voluntarily joined together and retained a reliable Expert who prepared an accurate modeling report. They’re asking the Governor to consider this report, as opposed to the U of M modeling, which is based on non-public data and methodologies.

If you would like more information about how to do this in your state, contact Dan at mccarthyd@butzel.com. www.butzel.com

A few days and 100+ comments later, people are still commenting. In any dark time, it always helps to be grateful for what you have, identify the good things that are still and always have been there and keep pushing forward.

Sometimes it helps to hear the good in other people's lives so you can identify it in yours...so I read each one of the comments in this episode.

It's good.

Get up. Persist.

The economy is good and unemployment is very low. That doesn’t mean that you can rest on your laurels when it comes to company loyalty.

The largest radio station operator in the US, iHeartMedia recently “displaced” over 1100 of their Programming, On-Air, and Production staff.

The cuts came without warning, though the company in its various forms over the years wasn’t exactly a stranger to doling out pink slips on occasion en mass.

Matt Dubiel owns a radio station in Chicago and he published a video shortly after the iHeartMedia bloodbath that empathized with those affected, but also placed blame squarely on their shoulders.

You see, if you’re still on the air in any capacity, you could be building a social media presence that rivals the audience of your entire station.

Actually, if you’re in a myriad of sales positions, you could be doing the same. This way, if your company decides to pull the rug out from under you, you simply plant your flag elsewhere and your audience won’t skip a beat.

If one day you get pulled into your boss' office and they begin talking about "moving in a different direction", how "it's nothing you did" or "we wish you well in your future endeavors", you can look them square in the face and ask, "Okay, fine! But are you sure you've thought this through?"

But you need to build that audience, which will eventually give you LEVERAGE.

Yep...I thought myself as a failure for many years...this is about as real as I've been in a long time.

****LISTEN to this episode and subscribe at

https://youtu.be/1f-0yWb4sTc

Thanks to various elements of conditioning I've had early in life, I've felt the stigma of a hopeless future embrace me.

I honestly don't think of myself as a successful voice over dude. I know what I am capable of pulling off...I also know there are many other talents much better than me. Their talent is to be emulated and admired. They have a true gift from God.

I can imagine that this might be the case for quite a number of you, especially now when everyone's "best life" is being pushed out there these days.

But take heart...

Failing is a good thing.

Without failure:

-You'll never fully appreciate a win

  • The mental toughness is unparraleled to those who "seem" to win

  • Everyone fails...it's those who will eventually win who embrace it and manage to keep pushing forward

  • Failure helps you to see clearly what you DO have

There is a ton of rate shaming that goes on in VO land these days especially when it comes to prospect who lowball. I have dubbed them "Hamburger Clients". If treated properly, they may become some of your biggest fans.

A few takeaways:

  • NEVER balk at an opportunity

  • This new economy in the creative space will be powered by relationships

  • Sharpen your selling process - Learn how to pivot during the dance

  • They get a chance to see what it's like to work with you, so smile and put on a show

  • No one wants to stay where they are and typically would like to move up. if they're your fan, they'll probably take you along

  • More Hamburger Clients = more referrals

  • It's economically smart

Teacher/parent nights have become a part of our world these past few years and they seem to get more interesting as the grades ascend.

****Watch this episode and subscribe to the podcast: https://youtu.be/3RgBZWLgHI8

I always am eager to hear about the state-run curriculum handed down to the schools while measuring each of my kid's teacher's enthusiasm for what they're told to teach for that year.

This year was a bit different....

As my wife and I went from classroom to classroom meeting my daughter's teachers, there was one that really stood out. Mr. Svihlik aka "Mr.S" will be handling the History and Social Studies portion of my little girl's 8 grade experience. His philosophy wasn't about making sure that she came away with all the correct dates and who was involved with what battle. Instead he was more about her learning time management skills, strategically arguing grades, and even to a certain extent, salesmanship.

As one might imagine, I was quite pleased. After all, it's not often that I seek out teachers to be on the show.

Some of the things discussed:

  • failure is okay, the earlier you know how to do it and bounce back from it, the better

  • the problem with labeling kids as "gifted"

  • hiring a kid who strives diligently for a "B" over the kid who effortlessly earns an "A"

  • the immensely growing importance of trade schools

Yes, Spence is one of those one-word artists. Deservedly so.

****Watch this episode and subscribe/rate at https://youtu.be/yXIBzvPcrBs

I met Spence in 2001 when I took the big radio career leap to what was then CBS/Las Vegas. I had been toiling away at i95 WRKI for several years and received an opportunity to work alongside greats like Gavin Spittle, Peter Sorensen, Thom Kaufold, Cat Thomas, Jb-kluc John Bernard, @John David Wells as well as Spence, who easily became a mentor of sorts and certainly a creative inspiration for me.

Okay. That's it for the gushy platitudes for Spence. He needs only so much adjulation per day.

In this episode, Spence and I breakdown his process for creating engaging and entertaining content on a weekly, if not daily basis for his role on Chet Buchanan's Morning Show on 98.5 KLUC.

If you're someone getting into or has been podcasting for a short time, this episode is for you.

Little did I know was that I became familiar with Spence's work way before I met him when he produced a parody song centered around a feud happening between pop princess Christina Aguilera and rap god Eminem. Hey...it was the year 2000 and people threw shade in song form. Spence wrote, composed and produced a "rebuttal" to Eminem from Christina that went viral. Well, viral for that time was going international on a multitude of radio stations.

I read about it from my comfy studio in Brookfield, Connecticut with little suspicion that I would someday stand up as Spence's Best Man at his wedding.

Creatives are great at being immersed in their art. I know a ton of videographers, photographers, songwriters, musicians and graphic artists who are great at their craft.

The one thing most of them share?

The inability to emotionally remove themselves enough from their art to effectively sell it.

The cannabis and CBD oil industry is in it's infancy. I think it's always fascinating to see how an industry that once was in prohibition gets marketed when it becomes legal.

Julian and I also discuss the somewhat negative perception of cannabis along with some of the names which don't exactly help the situation! His marketing techniques include his own methods of growth hacking which are on par to help get the industry to a point beyond the old and unfair stereotypes.

If you were to start a business tomorrow, what questions would you have?

That’s the question I asked on my Facebook page a few days before I recorded this podcast. The answers ranged from marketing to funding.

Watch this episode!

Todd Jackson is a business Attorney and broker. Over the past 27 years, his superpower has been setting up business owners for their exit.

You see, what a lot of us who venture out to start a business don’t realize is that there may come a day where we may want to get out of it and cash in. It’s at that point we find out the difference between what we think it’s worth versus the what an interested buyer thinks it’s worth.

Todd gets to have those hard conversations all the time. That’s why it’d be best for your business to get someone like Todd involved early!

I voice and produce a lot of intros and outros for various podcasts. When Syndicated Radio Talk Host Phil Valentine came to me to ask about producing one for his new podcast, I felt quite honored.

Phil and I have similar backgrounds as I spent a majority of my professional life in radio. I know that he knows a smorgasbord of people better qualified to voice a special project for him. His new venture was going to be something called the PodGoats that he was going to host with his son Campbell.

I typically listen to all of the podcasts for which I produce imaging (intros, outros, promos, etc), so when theirs debuted, I took in an episode.

I have never been so hooked on something right out of the gate. I predict that The PodGoats Podcast will be one of the greats if they keep it up.

As much as I keep my podcast about marinating your mind in good stuff, I also do it to talk with people I find interesting. Phil and Campbell are very interesting people and their show....is just FUN.

If Paul Harvey and Mike Rowe had a child, it'd be the PodGoats.

FEAR plays a huge part in things NOT happening.

Plus...could you imagine a platform where the heavyweights of the business influencer world like Grant, Gary Vaynerchuk, Dave Ramsey, etc., all came together? I would moderate, of course.

"All you're doing is talking. How hard can it be?" I've heard that comment countless times when I worked in radio. Today pretty much anyone with a mic and computer can start their own show. They're finding that it's not as easy as they thought.

In this episode, longtime pal, former boss of mine and nationally renowned Talk Radio Program Director Gavin Spittle give his take on what you need to know if you're wanting to start or have started a podcast.

Gavin and I worked together in Las Vegas, Nevada at KXNT Newsradio. It turned out to be one of the greatest times of my life. We can go years without talking, but when we do, it's like no time has passed. He's a great friend and certainly someone who helped make me into who I am today.

In this episode:

  • hits aren't just for music

  • radio isn't dead

  • you better know your prospects and guests

  • being your own producer

  • entertainment comes first

Gavin is also an entrepreneur is his own right with www.awesomesportslogos.com

Once upon a time, labeling yourself as an entrepreneur didn't have the glamorous appeal that it does today. To label yourself as such would elicit raised-eyebrow responses and thoughts of living in your parent's basement. But hey, now it's sexy!

While for the majority of us, it still isn't all massive cash flows, Lambos and McMansions that happen to fall in your lap in 6 months despite what is being permeated on social media. The reality is that entrepreneurship never lost it's grip on grit.

When you embark on this course, you have to take into account that it could be 5-10 years of grind, heartbreak, losing, being behind on bills, wondering if you made a mistake....it wil beat the hell out of you. The key is in the bounceback.

RyBack Reeves knows about bounceback quite well....and he's no stranger to getting beat up too. He is known as The Big Guy in the Pro Wrestling circles. He owns the successful line of nutrional supplements, www.feedmemore.com.

He is the host of the Conversation With The Big Guy podcast!

Ryback is also a published author with his book, "Wake Up, It's Feeding Time."

In this episode, Ryback and I delve into...

  • getting signed and being released from the WWE

  • podcast interviews

  • cutting your own hair

How many strangers do you come across everyday? Do you ever get that little cosmic nudge to acknowledge some of them? Do you use people's names when you're able, maybe when they're wearing a nametag?

One of my biggest philosophies is you never know who you're talking to or what their aspirations are. Just because they may seem lowly at the time doesn't mean they're not destined for much bigger things or know bigger people. Take the time to meet and listen to them. My pal Rich Redmond made a great point in our documentary project, "Working The Dream":

"I make it a point to use and remember everyone's name when I'm on a recording session. It's music to their ears. Plus everyone wants to move up. Today's receptionist may become tomorrow's second engineer. Give them the best impression you can and they might champion you down the road!" -Rich Redmond

There couldn't be a better point made of this concept than with Sandy Gennaro.

Sandy aptly calls himself the "grateful drumma" for a myriad of reasons. His illustrious career allowed him to be behind a set of drums backing some of the most iconic artists of our generation. Here's a brief rundown:

Joan Jett and The Blackhearts Cyndi Lauper The Monkees Pat Travers Robin Gibb and much more....

Sandy was with Cyndi Lauper when she was ruling the 80s...and that gig happened because he took the time to talk to someone backstage a few years prior.

If I knew at age 26 what I know now, I would likely still not be in Jerry Fetta's shoes.

I met Jerry around this time last year at a networking event in Nashville.

What surprised me wasn't that he had been driving nice cars, rubbing elbows with high rollers and accumulating wealth since he was 18.

What surprised me was that he lived and worked in freaking Anchorage, Alaska!

Jerry has accomplished financially more in the past 8 years than most people twice his age have ever dreamed. He owns a wealth consulting firm called Wealth DynamX, has contributed to the local homeless community with Operation R3Born and he has a massive desire to help people change the way they think about money.

On with the topic:

What if you could know ahead of time and money spent, how your advertising will perform for your business?

What if the particular medium you're looking into had a credit score of sorts?

Peter has been working on a new company that has a technology that extracts and assesses exactly that.

Kristin Benton is a Mindset Coach who has been through tremendous adversity in her life that surely gives her the air cover to be a true leader and encourager within the community of women that she is building.

In this episode, Kristin and I talk about how you can either choose to lean on bad circumstances that you've had in life or take action to begin healing and nurturing your mind for the better.

It's been my opinion that people generally tend to marinate their minds in stuff that is out of their control and does not provide sustenance. I know because I used to do the same thing. I would get riled up when it came to politics and whatever hot topic of the day was further dividing people. What I discovered was that I never changed anyone's mind, especially on Facebook. Plus my life wasn't any better for it. In fact, I felt stuck and hopeless.

Kristin and I discuss the small shifts you can begin to make in order to bring about good change in your life. Just remember that while the summit seems far away, you get closer with every small step you make.

I may or may not have gone deep into some of my issues which prompted Kristin to offer the Boundary Ninja e-course to you: https://coursecraft.net/c/boundaryninja/splash

Hey, why not? It seems like everyone has the title of CEO in their personal social descriptions these days!

Similar to entrepreneurs, there has also been a plethora of business coaches and gurus that have sprung up to help all the self-titled CEOs and entrepreneurs that have have sprung up!

I first heard of Rondi Lambeth on one of my client's shows. Brad Lea had Rondi on The Dropping Bombs Podcast and I swear it was the one of the most fascinating interviews I've ever heard because...

....because, well...it had to do with the mysteries of credit. There are so many opinions out there as to what to do with your credit and how to build it the right way. Should I rid myself completely of credit cards? Pay off the car? Be absolutely debt free?

Rondi Lambeth is the CEO of Fortress Credit Pro in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is also no stranger to public speaking and being a show host in his own right.

Like it or not, credit plays a huge part in our daily lives. Not just from the standpoint of getting financed for a sizable purchase, but also for being a potential hire for a company. You future employer wants to see how you pay your bills.

In this episode, we break down the fastest and most effective ways to boost your FICO score into the 800 range, what the scoring system actually means and how to think about your credit history.

This is a video I've been wanting to for a while. The idea of it started when I regrettably got involved in a discussion about rate integrity on a voice over Facebook page.

This discussion about rate integrity has been going on for about 15 years now.

Here's the reality in which we live:

  1. The market ultimately decides if you're good enough to charge the rate you want.

  2. The market doesn't care about how much you spent on equipment or education and training.

  3. Thanks to inexpensive technology and people looking to expand their incomes, they onboard into creative industries as the barrier to entry has come down drastically. They think that making $25-$50 in 20 minutes is pretty freaking cool.

  4. You, as a creative, need to rely less on other sources to get and close new business for you.

  5. You need to double down on selling skills.

I believe EVERY new opportunity, low-ball offer or not, is to be treated like gold. The economy won't stay the way it is forever and if you think it's hard now, just wait.

In this video, I go over the 5 equity components that you need to rethink when entertaining new clients:

  1. UPSELL - It's new potential money that can be upsold if you know what you're doing. This is where selling skills come into play.

  2. EXPERIENCE - They get to experience what it's like to work with you if you get the job. Mercedes-Benz has been driving home the notion of being Driven To Delight. This is something that has to come through for your new clients, EVERY TIME.

  3. UPWARD MOMENTUM - The person with whom you're dealing is likely not wanting to stay where they are. As they move up, so do you....IF you made a slam-dunk impression on them.

  4. NETWORK - Your new client has a network of friends, colleagues and other industry peers who need to hear about how great you are.

  5. REVIEW - If you've provided a 5 star service, then you should be asking for a 5-star review.

It may seem like that's the case, but the truth is that it's more important than ever to build a trusting personal relationship.

Dr. Misner started BNI in 1985 when he lost one of his bigger consulting client. So he decided to use his own consulting practices in what became the first ever BNI chapters, then known simply as "The Network".

That was the first time I cracked the mic on a 50,000 watt stick. Matt and I have also been very good friends ever since.

If you're like me, you may not have achieved what you thought you might have achieved by age 30. Or 35. Or 40.

When I was 18, I thought I'd have a few hundred grand in the bank. As it turns out, this line of thinking is a lot more common than I thought.

Tommy and I met through a coaching program called Monster Producer run by Super Coach Micheal Burt.

We hit it off immediately, and quite honestly, I think it has a lot to do with the title of this video. Tommy and I are similar in the sense that we both are late bloomers when it comes to doubling down on our talents and drive for a successful life. We both have made a slew of mistakes and our priorities have certainly been out of whack a time or two.

Tommy has quickly become one of the most influential Real Estate Pros in Middle Tennessee. 5 years ago, Tommy decided to sell 100 homes in one year. In 2017 he and his team did it. Now they've set their sights on 200 homes for 2018.

If you're thinking that your 18 year old self might wonder what happened with all the plans you made, as long as you're still breathing, you still have a chance.

Go for it.

"I wanted people to be able to dig through their couches, car seats and junk drawers to be able to buy a cupcake for themselves, someone's birthday or anniversary in order to bring joy into life."

Mignon and her family surely understood necessity. As someone who could not bake a cake that came from a box, she needed to provide income for her family. Dave Ramsey preached having a bake sale if you needed extra money.

Now Mignon's bake sale has blossomed into one of Nashville's most amazing business success stories. The Cupcake Collection in historic Germantown typically has lines out the door and sells out well before closing time.

Some would even say it was ordained and anointed by God.

In episode 9 of the JMVO Weekly Primer, longtime Nashville Visionary, Company Culture Builder and Multi-preneur Arnie Malham and I discuss the challenges of getting your people to row in the same direction with passion and self-guided-ness.

Culture is one of the major key components to what will build your business and Arnie is no stranger to the trials of doing so.

“We've done it wrong enough to figure out how to do it right.”

Arnie started CJ Advertising in 1994 and for the next 15 years discovered that "if it's worth doing, it's worth doign wrong". He and his team hustled until he realized that a strong culture comes from it's leadership.

"It took 20 years to become an overnight success". Arnie is one of the most well-versed business leaders in Nashville and the Middle Tennessee region. His companies are regularly toured by other business leaders to see how he's forged cultures that "gradually, then all of a sudden" propelled his business to astronomical levels.

He contributes much of his success to continuous learning and reading, which revealed another business that he's currently building, www.betterbookclub.com

Louisville's Mike Davenport isn't your everyday Chevy salesman.

With over 24k YouTube subscribers and over 6 million views, 13k Instagram followers plus thousands of others on Facebook/Twitter, and 43 units a month sold on average, he's one of those car business anomalies...a dealership within a dealership.

And it all started with an intrinsic understanding of the virtue of relationships with his customers, killer followup and staying as positive as possible everyday.

Plus Mike knows a thing or two about Corvettes. He's the Universe's leading authority on them. Just ask Grant Cardone.

In this episode we talk about:

  • The misled notion that "buyers are liars"

  • How Real Estate people are typically okay at prospecting but not okay at selling

  • How Car Salespeople are typically okay at selling but not okay at prospecting

  • Finding the value in every client opportunity, even if you don't sell to them

Watching this, I really talk about Howard Stern. A LOT. Wow.

I recently had the honor of being a guest on Tommy Davidson's Facebook morning show out in Murfreesboro, TN. To those who know him, he is "Good Time Tommy", #GTT, and because of his tenacity, valuable content and hustle, he is one of the most successful realtors in the area. I believe his willingness to be as real as he can in front of a camera will certainly earn him more customers, but more importantly....FANS.

Some of the takeaways from this episode:

-When you put out content, always watch/listen back to it as much as you can. Self-coach or have someone (like moi) coach you on how to constantly improve.

-Planting a flag in the soil of your beliefs, AKA the Howard Stern Effect.

-The 3 main ingredients to a group show, similar to a successful radio morning show.

If you have had a meeting with me in the past year, the book "Pendulum" by Roy H. Williams and Michael Drew has undoubtedly come up in conversation. It's one of the most impactful books on marketing, business, human relations and culture that I have ever read.

Find out more about it at www.penduluminaction.com and buy it here.

In this episode, Michael Drew unpacks how the Pendulum is lining up with current trends in our culture. We talk about going from a "Me" centered culture at it's zenith in 1983 to 2023 where we will be at the zenith of a "We" society. The last time we were here, was 1943...80 years ago when the pendulum was in the exact same spot.

You can follow Michael at @PromoteABook and he welcomes your emails at michael@smartervoice.com

Politics, manners, humor, sexuality, wealth and even our definitions of success…they’re always shifting. But have you ever stopped to wonder why, or more specifically how, this happens? On the surface it seems simple - these things are periodically renegotiated by whatever new values are deemed as ‘en vogue' by society. And we all know that social values are used as a lens to judge what is acceptable and what is not, at any moment in time.

But here's the deeper question - do these new values randomly emerge or is there a pattern?

Pendulum chronicles the stuttering history of western society, that endless tick-tock between one excess and another, always regretting what was left behind. Based on in-depth research of trends over last 3,000 years, we can see there IS a pattern. It's 40 years from one extreme to the other, with a complete cycle taking 80 years from start to finish.

Risk Exposure. If you're going into a pitch meeting/proposal/employment scenario this coming week, there no better person than Peter Sorensen to explain the awareness of your risk exposure to the situation in which you're navigating. It's a topic with which I have been fascinated and give my most intense focus whenever Peter and I talk.

Peter and I go back to 2001 when I was creating the marketing ideas and imaging for AM840 KXNT/Las Vegas and it's clients. I consider him to be in a fraternity of about 3-4 people who are the most intelligent I know.
