Kurtron lands a great bourbon from a friend of a friend of a friend. We travel to Steamboat Springs, Colorado to catch-up with John and Ann for an hour of innovation and creativity, celebrating the artistic spirit of American women. This is a very unique story about a new way of making a really tasty bourbon with a purpose to keep the arts flowing. Featuring a high-corn mashbill, American Woman Bourbon has a smooth, sweet taste but the story behind how this came together is unlike anything we have heard. Did you know all bottles need to pass a 92 point test to ensure the bottle wont crack under pressure? But the pressure of putting a new bourbon in the bottle is even higher. We'll hear about a new craft barreling and bottling process that makes American Woman bourbon an award winner. If you see it in your local bar or restaurant, ask for a pour. If you can't find it, check out www.AWSpirits.com to find a bottle near you.

What does an $1800 bottle of Bourbon taste like?

The Bourbon Boys settle in for their first tasting of a $1800 bottle they blended. The 2023 Infinity Bottle. After recording each episode in 2023, we poured a shot of what we tasted into a gifted, crystal decanter with our names engraved on it. This became the 2023 Infinity Bottle. Hear about how this became an $1800 bottle, how Kratt was able to pull fast math on it, how Kurt's neighbors gifted this bottle, what we reflect on in 2023, the year in review, great tastes from our favorite episodes. You be the judge on the existance of an Infinity bottle. Our team is split 50/50, pour the last bit of bourbon into an Infinity bottle or just finish the bottle.

If you bottle it, they will drink it… and love it.

While not exactly as well-known as #ShoelessJoe whispering “if you build it, he will come” to Ray in the #FieldOfDreams classic, we’re pretty sure someone was whispering this to #DrewStoren and #TylerClippard as they worked to create the Field of Dreams bourbon. Or maybe Drew was just hearing things.

Regardless, these two former major leaguers set an audacious goal to bring together two of America’s greatest heirlooms – baseball and bourbon. After sharing a bottle and some laughs, we are living proof (93, to be exact) that the baseball and bourbon communities should be excited about @drinkfieldofdreams and Field of Dreams bourbon. Listen in as these former bullpen mates and friends talk about where it started, the journey, and what’s next. And don’t miss the last call where they share who they would like one shot to face in the batter’s box.

“This field, this game: it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good and what it could be again. Oh… people will come, Ray, people will most definitely come.” Encouraging, wise, prophetic words from Terence Mann. And, if they are lucky enough to get their hands on a bottle of Field of Dreams bourbon, they will be very happy. Whiskey from the most famous cornfield in the world - play ball and #BourbonOn!

What does the luck of the draw mean to you? Listen as the boys try two really lucky finds. First up is the Weller black label that Kurton secured through some connections after he tried it at a spirits conference in NYC last year. This is smooooother than the backside of a spoon. Next up is Kratt's lottery winner in the NC ABC allocation lottery - the Woodford Reserve Masters Collection coming in at a hot 124+ proof. This lottery is a little different, you don't win the bottle, you win the right to BUY the bottle. I know, it's different down here. What are the luckiest moments in the BourbonBoys lives? Listen to find out.

This is just a week after Episode 062 - Room 206, so we are feeling loose. There's a very thin thread of a storyline in this episode, but we do cover Kentucky Owl from Kentucky of course, Monk's Road also from Kentucky and David E. from Hershey PA. Alton and Kratt did their homework, while Kurton and DEW just interrupted the entire time. We sample a great range of flavors mixed together with plenty of sharp banter between Kurt and Kratt. Shocker. Grab a bottle and a glass, sit back, enjoy the episode and ask yourself, whoooooo would you want to share a bourbon with at a concert of a lifetime.

What happens when you bury a bottle of bourbon upside down, in the middle of the summer, behind a church, at night? Find out and hear about what tasty bottles were hidden behind the door of Room 206. This episode talks about newlyweds, drink packages, boot legging bourbon, The Spire, deep friendships, meeting Bourbon Tom and toasting to a bright future.

If you can find a bottle of Horse Soldier, Blue Run (it's a rye this time) and Fugitive, pour a glass and enjoy!

Where have you fellas been?

We have put on thousands of miles of travel over the past three months. We did our homework and tasted, collected, reviewed some great bourbons and other whisky and whiskey. From Berkshires in western Massachusetts to the red corn fields of Wisconsin to the shores of southern Alaska. Plus there was always time to taste Canadian, Irish, Scottish whiskies.

Southern Alaska is where we find Boatwright, a young bourbon blend featuring a bourbon from Kentucky and their own Alaskan mashbill. Its bright, young, full of wood. Then we move to the Berkshires and taste a 5 year old craft bourbon from a Real Housewife of NYC, Blue Manor. Great color, even greater taste. Get one if you can find one, they are now impossible to track down. Finally, we taste the special release bourbon from Wisconsin, J.Henry Anniversary blend. This hot as hell, cask strength bourbon is so unique with its heirloom Red Corn and special mashbill.

Plus, Kratt and Kurt actually agree on something! Maybe 3 months apart does make realize how much they are alike. Pour a glass, sit back, listen to the guys catch up after a short break and enjoy.

What Daufuskie?

That’s what we all said when Kratt got pulled away for a company dinner last minute and couldn’t join us tonight. So Alton picked up Kratt's role and gave Kurt are hard time. We learned a lot in this eposide about starting businesses, ladders and frat houses, stealing second and living on an island, this is one worth a listen.

Everybody, meet Tony. What started as a conversation about what retirement looks like with his wife led to a beach house on a remote island off the shore of SC and, oh yeah…a distillery.

And if you don’t know about Daufuskie (pronounce Dah-fuss-key) you need to. This little remote island has so much to offer and only accessible via ferry. But don’t be fooled, while remote, it’s an amazing place.

Tony takes us through his journey from chemist to CEO to producing rum to now producing what we think is some pretty damn good bourbon. Ever hear of Breakfast Bourbon – well it’s a real thing at 80 proof. From there we tried the Daufuskie Three Year Straight Bourbon at 92 proof and lastly and amazing 117.8 proof Single Barrel Cask Strength.

Great stories to be heard from days gone by, Tony takes us back to where it all started for him and how he came to the great place of Daufuskie. So join us for the journey and listen in.

Staring Down The Barrel - Rotten Little Bastard

The irony in the name Rotten Little Bastard wasn’t lost on us. In this episode of Staring Down The Barrel, we chat with the owner and founders of Rotten Little Bastard Distillery. Hailing from the low country Beaufort, SC, this young distillery is hiding its age in some pretty amazing tasting bourbon for a soon to be three year old distillery. The brain child of Master Distiller Brian Fackrell, the idea came to him during his Distilling Masterclass. When he and his wife, Brigid, decided to go for it, the world through a pandemic at them. Despite all of the challenges that came with the lock-down, these two pushed on and finally opened their dream to the public. What was once the automotive bays of a K-Mart department story, RLB sits on Boundary Street in a refurbished K-Mart. The space is open, facing the marshes of the low-country intracoastal and has unlimited access to the humidity and Beaufort seasons. This episode we hear all about what it takes to start a distillery, what they hope their legacy becomes, what goes into the–incredibly mature for a two-year–bourbon and what’s next for the Rotten Little Bastard. Give it a listen, give them a visit, show your support for the craft distillery near you. And as Alton says, the best way to enjoy bourbon is low and slow. #RLB, #RottenLittleBastard #LowCountry #LowandSlow #BourbonOn

Sometimes you just have to stretch those legs, get out of town… change up the scenery.   Jump in to hear Alton talk about his adventure out west and new love for automotive cow tipping.  Then Kurt shares the deets on his amazing trip across the pond – including a very professorial commentary on Ballooning – yes, plenty of hot air.  And lastly, we take a moment to introduce a new bottle and pay tribute to losing a very special lady.

This episode’s lineup includes a few good bottles - Belfour, 3 Chord, and Heaven’s Door Cask Strength.  Listen in to hear how they are connected to Flintstone Vitamins, Pecans, Hockey Players… and Pat Benatar??!!   Maybe DEW and Kratt will be next to hit the road… in the meantime – we’ll clean the studio, polish the lowballs, and keep hunting for new bottles to taste.   Bourbon On!

Three bourbons hit the list - The Wiseman, Blue Note Crossroads and cask strength Heavens Door.  It’s all about the journey we take in life.

Curiosity, courage and being comfortable with going somewhere you’re not really sure is the right way. Who do you lean on?

And we’ve all lost people in our lives this past year, we talk about what they meant to us, how we take learning from them and how that moves us forward.

So come along with us for some new discoveries in the bourbon world. Same crew, same lack of snobbery and of course same banter.

With the excitement of recording in Kratt’s barn shot because he can’t seem to finish a project, we find ourselves again at Sandowne Estates.   In this episode we explore four craft distiller bourbons that DEW picked up on a recent road trip to New England. (Who doesn’t love a good road trip?) Making bourbon started as a local effort and while we enjoy the consistent flavors and availability large distilleries offer, exploring craft spirits is chock full of surprises – some good, some not so good. With proofs ranging from 90-118 (yes, 118!) you can imagine where the preferences land (Kurt is sweating just reading this).  I believe consensus was the 118 proof was a winner… but after drinking a couple of pours of it, I honestly can’t remember.

Episode 026

The Old Fashioned is a deep part of America’s cocktail history. With a simple base ingredient list, it begs for experimentation. In this episode we explore the history of the Old Fashioned (Kurt insisted) and each of us put our spin on the bourbon classic. Not surprising to those who have played with the recipes, we find four distinct tastes with each playing into personal taste preferences - sweetness, citrus, smoky flavor and spice. Bourbon neat is still the drink of choice but a good Old Fashioned cocktail is a great change of pace. #bourbonon #oldfashioned #cocktails #oldtub

Episode 025.  No…wait, is it actually 26? I'm confused. Listen in as Kurtron commits to channel his inner Wisconsin brethren…@SeanHayes host of @SmartLess.  DEW quotes Spinal Tap, Alton offers to give Kurtron a hug, and Kratt talks about hammers. In this 2nd Family Tree session we’ll work through 3 of Wild Turkey’s finest: Wild Turkey 101, Russell’s Reserve 10 yr., and Rare Breed. Hope y'all get a chance to sample these on your own – all great pours from the mighty Kickin’ Chicken!!

P.S. If anyone can get in touch with @SeanHayes, Kurtron appreciates the help.

Who doesn’t love a blind bourbon tasting? We know the Bourbon Boys do! In this episode there are 4 new flavors ... the only guard rail was “bring something we haven’t tasted together.” Part of the fun was seeing the camouflaging techniques- plastic bags, a fancy burlap bag, a neoprene sleeve, and a good ole’ brown bag. Guess who brought out the fancy burplap...?  Best news is that none were dogs, all 4 had some interesting elements. Kurt is REALLY GOOD at guessing what’s in the bag, at one point in the game he was (somehow) 4-for-3! Join us for a good bourbon game. #BourbonOn #blindtasting #pegleg #revivalbourbon

Bourbon Boys or Rye Rascals? There is no question where DEW stands on the debate. Come along the tasting journey for three spirits - two grand bourbons and a rye whiskey that somehow snuck in the mix. Exploring Whiskey Advocates 2020 Top 20, the guys find a Knob Creek 12 gem (that we hope to see again soon) and revisit the delicious and hard-hitting Wild Turkey Rare Breed. In between, we meet Old Overholt for the first time. Like a good spirit-filled family reunion, some of the best banters comes as tensions mount around this episodes lineup.  #bourbonon #notryerascals #Top20 #whiskeyadvocate #oldoverholt #knobcreek #rarebreed #wildturkey @wildturkey @knobcreek @Old_Overholt_Official

Shoutout to the wives for bringing the Ghost Coast name to life! In this 3rd episode of Staring Down the Barrel, we meet Chris Sywassink, co-founder of the Ghost Coast distillery in historic Savannah, Georgia. The story of how the first legal distillery in Savannah since Prohibition came into being includes everything from moonshiners to General Oglethorpe’s affinity for oranges to a lesson about the impact of storms on barrel aging.  Ghost Coast’s Master Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a cozy bourbon with a lot of taste – created with a wonderful blend of four barrel-aged unique bourbons that include some not-so-traditional ingredients, like Saison yeast - which happens to provide just a hint of an apricot flavor.  This bourbon is a must try when you find it (available online) and the Ghost Coast distillery is a must visit when in the Savannah area. With a motto like “in the good times people drink, in the bad times people drink more”… you can’t go wrong exploring the many spirit flavors they offer.  @ghostcoastdistillery #BourbonOn

Episode 021 - Oh the places you’ll go

This is Episode 021. Each time we travel out of state, we all bring back a souvenir from a local distillery. Hard to believe we haven’t recorded since November in The Whiskey Prison. Did Kurtron lose a tooth in a prison fight? You be the judge. But since then, we have traveled to Utah to ski, The White Mountains of New Hampshire for Christmas and a weekend getaway to historic Savannah, Georgia. That’s a lot of ground covered and a lot of bourbon sampled. We share our thoughts on Sugar House Distillery out of Utah, Old Man of the Mountain from Tamworth Distilling in New Hampshire and Savannah Distilling from Georgia. There’s a lot of country to see and even more bourbon to sample. Plus, Kratt takes us back to college professors who left lasting impression on us with Last Call. Pour yourself a dram, put on the headphones and laugh your ass off as shots are fired and the banter continues. Kratt can't quit Kurt.

Our visit to Whisky Prison uncovered a two-grain mash bill, a haunted rickhouse, a bourbon premier, and a wedding toast. What a great fall day. We went looking to hear about the Life Lore and Libation threads that make Conviction bourbon whiskey, and we were not disappointed.

The distillery is actually in a former prison in use from the 1920’s until 2010. It houses 1 of 2 remaining isolation boxes in North Carolina. Fortunately for bourbon fans, it’s current residents are some select barrels aging toward a 4-year release.

The Bourbon Boys sat down with Master Distiller Sebastian Correa to taste the sweet flavors derived from Southern Grace’s high corn blend. Sebastian shared highlights from his journey from App State’s Fermentation Science program to his first role at Southern Grace. And, as a special treat, we raised a whiskey pour to his fiancée, Hailey, for letting him spend time with us only a week before their wedding.

Sampling three versions of Conviction’s new Double-Oaked bourbon release, the flavor profile did not disappoint. Notes of banana bread, vanilla and caramel left us wanting more...so we each bought bottles in the gift shop!

For spirit enthusiasts this distillery tour in Mount Pleasant, NC is a must see. Enjoy terrific bourbon and Sun Dog cocktails poured by the friendly staff.

In the bourbon world, Boehm doesn’t carry as much weight as Beam… but that’s where it started 225 years ago. With a rich family of spirits under the Beam family tree, we took a tour of a wide range of bourbons – Old Tub, Basil Hayden, Knob Creek, Bakers and Bookers. We were all a bit surprised at our rankings at the end of this tasting. Listen in to hear our scores and let us know your thoughts...and your opinion on country ham. #BourbonOn @jimbeamdistillery

Episode 018 is all about crimes, punishment, redemption and the biggest question never asked..."who in your family would go to prison?" We sample them in order starting with Larceny - a wheated bourbon who's taste was made famous by an infamous act, then followed by North Carolina's own Conviction by Southern Grace Distillery, the first bourbon legally made behind bars in a former prison and wrap up the cycle with Redemption - not quite the Green Mile, but man this is a good bourbon. Hear our recommendations for Last Call as we send Kurt to prison, not sure what he did to deserve it, but this was a fun episode.

Oh, and Amanda has Kurt's back. Nice to know someone is looking out for him.

Welcome to our first edition of Staring Down The Barrel: Blue Note Bourbon. We have a conversation with the founder about what it's like to start and grow a young spirits brand.

When a bourbon’s brand, heritage, and flavor come together to tell a full story, there is reason to take note. And take note we did, with 3 great pours out of Memphis, Tennessee - two amazing bourbon whiskey’s and a rye that will change how you think about ryes… “Smoother than smooth” are the words they chose, and we kind of agree.

We had the pleasure of spending some time getting a peek behind the scenes of some great flavors coming out of BR Distilling – Blue Note bourbon and Riverset Rye – with co-founder McCauley Williams. Distribution is expanding (as early as September for some) and you’ll hope that your state is on the short list.

Enjoy! BourbonOn

Talk about a wicked episode, kid! We take a trip up to New England and make our own Bourbon Trail. Which BTW is much more interesting than the Freedom Trail field trip in 7th grade, just sayin'. Aggressively, we tackle 5 bourbons in one episode. We don't recommend that. But we start with Berkshire Mountain Distillery in western Mass - The Bay State, then head 30 miles off the coast to Nantucket for Triple 8 Distillery's Nor' Easter. After that we head up to Vermont - the Green Mountain State - and try both Mad River bourbon and Snuggler's Notch (purchased in NH - Live Free or Die) and wrap it up with the Wiggly Bridge from Maine - the Vacation State. Early appologies to fans in CT and RI, step it up and send us bourbon if you got it. There is so much good bourbon out there and some of it is coming from a few New England states. I tellya kid, theyas some tasty bourbon up theya.

In this episode we sample our first shipment from Flaviar. These three vials of small, craft bourbons do not disappoint and the presentation from Flaviar adds some flair to the experience. We taste Alamo from San Antonio, TX; Koval from Chicago, the first distillery to open following prohibition; Journeyman from Michigan. Then something happened and Kurt's rage against HOA rules and signs in his yard came out. Here where it goes and how you can bribe your HOA president in a pinch.

This is our third attempt at episode 014. We really suck at Zoom, so attempts 1 and 2 turned in to catching up, drinking bourbon, losing wifi, timing out at 40 minutes because we are too cheap to buy a real Zoom account. But hey, it was great to get back together as the country is opening back up. We tasted three really great bourbons, didn't have a ton to argue about, still found ways to poke at Kurt and caught up on how we made it through the quarantine. Tonight we sampled two Weller wheated bourbons (red and green label - none of us are willing spend $10 on Zoom upgrade so do you think we'd spend $800+ on the Weller blue label?) and as a bonus, Kurt threw in Willett Pot Still edition. Really cool taste, not your typical bourbon, but a real cool gift idea too. Join us, let us know what you think and #BourbonOn!

Whether it be in life or with bourbon, getting old is all relative. And depending on who you ask, we BourbonBoys are older and dare we say, better. So we took the challenge to see if Old is Better. We're sampling three bourbons all starting with "old" in their brand name - Old Forester 1870 Original Batch, Old Elk, Old Nick Williams. In this episode, we learn about cutting and heat, some top female blenders, what contributions rye makes versus wheat. These Old brands harking back to the 1800’s -- the first ever batch processing, to a 200 year-old recipe resurrected right here in NC. The exploration takes us across rye and wheat based bourbons with some very opinionated viewpoints on tastes and whether we’d put it on the shelf.  Embracing old is our motto - facing it straight on like bourbon served neat. For last call, we talk about what we’d ask our grandpa’s if given the opportunity again. What would you ask him if you could today? I bet we'd all learn what life was like when time moved just a little slower. Let’s take a ride on the slow train and venture in to life of the OLD.

The Three Jeffersons

Bringing back the Jefferson’s from the Reserve long ago talked about, we are putting our tasters to the test – using the Rule of 3’s. Literally and Figuratively. Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness – very well three of the most important words in American history from Mr. Jefferson himself (that's Thomas, not George). Inspiring countries around the world, visionaries of technology and how we process information.  Let’s take a journey in the Jefferson’s world and see how good we are. Rubber Duckies to voyages crossing the equator explore the innovation of The Jefferson’s family of bourbon. A line up of Ocean Aged At Sea, Rum Cask and Pitchard Hill Cabernet Cask – can we decipher the uptick on the tradition of Jefferson’s Reserve. From the Chappallet Winery of the vast lands of France to the American heritage of real bourbon, we can say oak is oak, but let’s just see.  It’s the Rules of Three.

There are stars in the southern sky, and if ever you decide you should go, there is a taste of time sweetened honey, down the Seven Bridges Road (and at Southern Distilling!)

Our first foray into an episode exploring a single distillery’s offering, the Bourbon Boys play the local card and sample 4 pours from North Carolina’s own Southern Distilling.  Big question – can their “slightly sophisticated” bourbon palates detect a distinct difference between the tastes of two single barrel offerings (41 & 61, to be exact)? The evening is capped off with tasting a delicious dessert-like bourbon drink that is sure to be an instant favorite for all who try it - you’ll want to write this one down!

Gifting Bourbon!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! What better way to celebrate than with a nice bottle of bourbon. Going to a Festivus party? Have a great boss you need to keep in good graces? Want to surprise that aficionado with something special? We’ve got your line up and we're samplingThe Three Wisemen of Bourbon.

And it’s not just about the bourbon. Pair any of these up with some whiskey glasses, some aromatic bitters, and a little splash of somethin’ somethin’ and voila, you’ve got a great gift for the season. Maybe even an Old Fashioned for yourself.

Bring them in low & slow, hit them hard & high proof or right down the middle for a smooth landing, we present The Three Wisemen of Bourbon, George, Hayden and Mark with three very different tastes and gift spending levels. George T Stagg (116.9 proof will make you jingle all the way), Basil Hayden's and Makers Mark (a wee little 350ml bottle). Yeah it’s a little bottle and the guys busted Kurtron for the small investment, but his thought process was dead on – they just didn’t see it. Plus, Dave wins lottery at ABC that he actually has to pay for…go figure.

What would you like to find under the Christmas Tree this year?

Episode 006

We take the “Under $20 Bottle Challenge”.  Can a bottom shelf bourbon, under $20 be worth it? How do they taste? What is sour mash? Are these all the same bourbon from Bardstown but with different labels? Can the Bourbon Boys guess which is Ezra Brooks, Henry McKenna or Evan Williams 1783? Will there be a winner? Will they get poured out on the grass? So many questions, only one answer. Listen to hear how the challenge plays out and how far we used to make $20 go when we were just starting out ourselves.
