The problem I had with God is that I wasn't talking to the right one. Once I figured out what I needed from God, I was able to find the God of my understanding. It was then a 12 Step Program started to work for me.
Religious Trauma Syndrome is the condition experienced by people who are struggling with leaving an authoritarian, dogmatic religion and coping with the damage of indoctrination. They may be going through the shattering of a personally meaningful faith and/or breaking away from a controlling community and lifestyle. RTS is a function of both the chronic abuses of harmful religion and the impact of severing one’s connection with one’s faith. It can be compared to a combination of PTSD and Complex PTSD (C-PTSD).
Today, 15.8 million American men are survivors of childhood sexual assault... that's 1 in 6 men you see every day. Like women, men who experience sexual assault may suffer from depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other emotional problems. But because guys generally have different life experiences than women, their emotional symptoms can appear different from women.
Our culture minimizes the impact of sexual abuse and sexual assault. When individuals disclose an assault or abuse, they’re often accused of lying or told that the crime is in some way their own fault. People will tend to fault a male victim instead of a perpetrator. Male survivors often have to confront unsympathetic attitudes, especially if they choose to report the crime, and they may lack support from family and friends for doing so. This is my story...
