Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy
The Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy Degenerative Disease Special Interest Group (DDSIG) is a component of the American Physical Therapy Association. The DDSIG is comprised of physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students in physical therapy programs that have an interest in neurodegenerative disorders including Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, amyotropic lateral sclerosis, Huntington’s disease, and others. The DDSIG provides a forum to discuss advances in practice and the challenges of providing care for individuals with neurodegenerative disease. They are a valuable networking tool to help researchers, educators, and clinicians in the area of neurodegenerative disorders connect, share ideas, and learn from leaders in the field.
In this episode, host Ken Vinacco is joined by CSM 2026 DD SIG Platform Award winner Franchino Porciuncula. They discuss this study on use of RAS for improving gait automaticity in people with PD. In this study, Dr. Porciuncula explored the possible mechanisms by which RAS works. We also learn more about FNIRS technology for mobile brain imaging. In this second installment of our series on rare neurologic diseases, host Katy McGraw talks with Heather Cianci about Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a neurologic disease that can mimic some features of Parkinson Disease (PD) like loss of balance and a tendency to fall backwards, but that also has unique features such as the loss of vertical gaze, and behavioral changes. Heather discusses clinical signs to look for to treat and/or refer out for. She also talks extensively about treating PSP clinically throughout the disease course, palliative care for patients with advanced PSP, working within interdisciplinary teams to support patients with PSP, and so much more.

A Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) for PT management of PD was recently published in the Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Journal in December, 2021. In this episode, Parm talks to Miriam Rafferty, an author of the CPG and co-chair of the CPG knowledge translation task force, about the development of this new guideline. In this special episode, Rebecca interviews Dr. Graham Cochrane about his recent publication in the July 2021 issue of the Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy: “Comprehensive Clinical Assessment of Vestibular Function in Multiple Sclerosis.” They discuss his significant findings in central vestibular integration through variance in response to subjective visual vertical and dynamic visual acuity, as well as its association with disease severity. In addition, Dr. Cochrane describes each vestibular measure used in his study and his recommendation for an efficient battery of clinical vestibular tests.
