The most prominent origin in my story that led me to do what I do now, began in 2011 when I had the greatest epiphany three hours after I gave birth to my son. I knew in that moment that I would resign from my company that I built from ground up in to a seven figure per annum business, give up the lifestyle I was living and start a journey within.
In January 2012, I resigned from my own company and embarked on a 12 month sabbatical to find out who I am.
I was fortunate to have two mentors to guide me on this inner journey. One of my mentors was a Professor in Philosophy from Oxford University, the other an expert in the emotional body.
During the twelve month sabbatical, I came face to face with my TrueSelf realising that I had gifts, talents, skills and traits that were unique to me. I fully accepted that I could do specific things with ease and grace and for the first time in my life I felt a deep sense of freedom.
I always had a unique approach to turning job titles into brands, I knew how to digitise business systems that were designed for the end user and I knew sales. When I merged these together, I could solve a complex problem in the world and that is when I transitioned into a coach and never looked back.
It took me three years to carefully craft my frameworks and design a system that delivers outcomes because my ultimate driver was to ensure that my clients got results in the shortest time possible.

I started my adventures in education as a high school band director after graduating with a music education degree from Louisiana State University and moving to Texas. After six years, I changed lanes to explore elementary education and taught kindergarten or first grade for the next 10 years, earning English as a Second Language and Bilingual Education certifications along the way. In Spring 2022, I graduated with a master's degree in educational leadership from Texas A&M University with a specialization in bilingual education.
Last fall, I made the decision, with the encouragement of my supportive partner, to take a break from the classroom to build my business helping Texas bilingual teachers prepare for and pass the 5 difficult certification exams required to hold a fully certified teacher position. It brings me so much joy to be a part of these teachers' journeys and celebrate with them as they enter their classroom for the first year of teaching! I am taking this opportunity to focus on my health and wellness as I consider the many possible future paths ahead. For now, I have more time to enjoy the things that I truly love - hiking, training my dogs, traveling, learning, and making the world a better place.

Since creating this thriving and ever growing network for Virtual Assistants, Rosie Shilo has become one dedicated business woman. Currently Rosie owns and runs ‘Virtually Yours’, a network for over 190 Australian Virtual Assistants which she founded in 2004.

Leslie Huffer was a Special Education teacher for 8.5 years. In that time, she got married and had a need for an additional income stream and creative outlet so she started blogging for businesses. She quickly realized how much more help business owners needed with their online to-do list so she started learning how to manage social media accounts, run digital ads, and much more, adding additional value to business owners and bringing in a significant income. Her husband even jumped in when he saw the financial and time freedom potential of this industry!
After juggling teaching and running a business, she decided to take the leap to full-time self-employment and hasn't looked back! She currently runs her digital agency and has also started teaching others how to do the same- even those with no prior experience, through an online course and mentorships!
In both her business and mentoring, she has found that her teaching background has helped tremendously. Too many teachers put themselves in a box thinking their skill sets can only be used in a traditional classroom, which couldn't be further from the truth! She loves helping people discover their true potential and create income from anywhere, whether they just want a profitable side hustle or they want to replace their income entirely!

Becky Boudreau was raised on the coast of Maine, USA. Her family instilled in her a strong sense of community and commitment at a young age. From the moment that Becky entered her first preschool classroom, she knew she wanted to be a teacher. However, it was not until she graduated from the University of Maine in 2000 with a degree in English Language and Literature and Secondary Education that her dream came into fruition.
Becky has worked in many facets of education. She taught students in every grade level from 2 to 12. Becky valued the importance of relationship building, authentic learning, and doing what was right for the students in her classroom. This often caused conflict with administration or other teachers, because she rewrote the given curriculum to inject interest based learning, project based learning, and usually did not follow a pacing guide. However, Becky used the relationships that she created with the students to drive the classroom and materials used. There was laughter, smiles, and a warm climate for all.
When the COVID Pandemic hit the world, it was difficult for Becky to return to her classroom. Becky was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2019. The adjustments of having to wear a mask, teaching in a hybrid classroom, and juggling the responsibilities of the classroom were not stressor that Becky was willing to undertake. She left the traditional classroom and worked for an online teaching company in the 2020-21 school year. Becky missed the face to face interactions with the students. In 2021, Becky opened a learning center in her hometown.
Becky’s learning center, Learning for Success, works towards helping parents homeschool their children. Becky has small cohorts of students in similar age groupings. She creates the curriculum for the students for the whole week. Becky invites the groups to the center two days a week for instruction, social time, and collaborative learning opportunities. Erin O’Donoghue is a proud Kamilaroi woman, who grew up in Rural Darling Downs in Queensland. She was adopted to her family in 1987 and is of Torres Strait Islander decent (her biologi[1]cal parents were white and TI). Her father, Phil Pinkney, is a Kamilaroi/Gamillaraay man who raised Erin through these Aboriginal values and customs. She identifies as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.
Erin’s employment started in 2009 where she worked as an Indigenous Sports and Recreation Officer in Mackay. Here she developed crime prevention and sporting based rehabilitation systems for the disengaged youth on Yuibera/Yuwi Country. In 2011, she started her study in Law and Education (specialising in Business and Literature), working for various law firms around Mackay and for the Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Legal Aid Service alongside their resident Barrister who is a Gubbi Gubbi man. She graduated in 2016, and decided to pursue high school teaching and has been working in the public and private sectors for the past 5 years. Erin is currently working at the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre as a Literacy Teacher working predominately within the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector.
“Working with so many Aboriginal children has always been a great experience; but it is upsetting that so many are incarcerated.”
To improve her and other colleagues’ practice, she has developed an Aboriginal Pedagogy for teaching and learning. “I’ve named the system ‘Winanga-Li’, which is a Kamilaroi word meaning ‘to hear’ and I’m hoping that by teaching this system to other teachers we can finally merge the “Murri World” with the “Western World” and achieve true reconciliation in our schools and communities.
From the creation of this program, Erin now offers Educational Consulting services to teachers, faculties and also schools and is currently working with the QCAA to embed Aboriginal Perspectives into the state-wide curriculum.

"I found myself digging in the bottom of my console of my car one dark night to put gas in my car. Struggling financially, frustrated and mad at the world, I decided this was no way to celebrate the gift of life. I was tired of killing myself for a community that could care less. I made a change and did something to help myself.
I concentrated on getting my student loans forgiven and I worked hard for my real estate business to build as fast and strong as possible.
On the last day of school, I was able to complete several sales and hire more agents to supplement my school salary. I may work a small part-time job as I continue to grow. But being a teacher is not one of those options anymore!!!"

However, a continual struggle for me, was not having belief in myself and my abilities. Consequently, I often ended up sabotaging my best ideas, in spite of being a seemingly competent woman.
Following a painful divorce, I was led to complete my studies in Psychotherapy and it was during this period, much of the personal growth work I did was through my art practice. Here, I experienced first hand the healing power of connection to my creative source.

Willpower is based on the scientific concept of "activation energy" which explains the amt of effort/energy required to transform the current stable conditions. Willpower and social accountability and encouragement can definitely help us if our resistance is mild.

About Karen:
Karen Thompson Anderson is a wellbeing and communication coach in Melbourne Australia. Karen grew up in a religious and military family where she learned a lot about the punishment and reward system of goal setting. Karen studied professional communication to post graduate level but stlll really struggled with her personal communication as a partner and a parent, raising two children and also caring for a family member with a serious substance addiction, plus navigating her Dad's palliative care.
From Karen's experience of those difficult years of social isolation, powerlessness, struggle, anger & worry, she committed herself to researching recovery and wellbeing. She says she was pushing herself so hard in every way to try to reclaim her life for her family, her kids, but nothing she tried was sustainable.
Karen's defining moment came after reading a school newsletter and deciding to attend a Nonviolent Communication (NVC) workshop, imagining some compassionate communication might help with achieving the understanding and support she really needed. She's since been on a dedicated journey learning NVC over 10 years now......combined with her wellbeing and recovery story she created her Wellbeing Model in 2016.
In 2020 Karen hosted her first Activate Wellbeing workshop online with www.WiseWomenRising.com.au, and then in 2021 she presented a session at the Australian & NZ Addiction Conference, where she shared the latest understandings from neuroscience about the power of empathy, nonviolent communication and recovery from trauma through stories of her own experiences.

I got tired of being a hard working, over achiever 🤷🏿♀️
I was overworked and overwhelmed. I was working multiple jobs so when I did have time for my family I was tired and frustrated.
I was an accountant, college instructor, and not where I wanted to be financially. I had experience designing courses so I used that skill to create a course on avoiding student loan debt.
Once it sold there was no looking back!
Not only have I successfully monetized that experience but I've become a stay at home mom raising two toddlers (one of which is autistic).

Kylie Zeal is a Book Coach. She wrote her first book in 2013, and wishes she knew then what she knows now about how to plan, draft, edit and publish a book, not to mention how to manage her time so the writing happens faster. That knowledge would have saved her more than two years of meandering, confusion and self-doubt.
Fortunately, Kylie persevered, driven by the experience of how much books had helped her transform her life and a desire to have the same impact on others, and eventually published her book. It became a valuable asset in her business, coaching industry leaders and entrepreneurs.
Kylie continued to write and publish books and discovered that she wanted to spend more of her time immersed in the world of writing and publishing. Scott Johnson is the proud Co-founder of Get Mentally Fit with his psychologist wife Emily.
Scott taught at secondary school level, on the Gold Coast in Queensland, for 13 years. A series of conspicuous signposts eventually led to Scott leaving the teaching profession.
Like many education stakeholders, he experienced the negative effects of increasing academic demands and assessment pressures on students. Attending the 2018 PESA (Positive Education Schools Association) conference, at Geelong Grammar School, evidently ignited his passion for finding a personal solution to this troubling issue.
With the luxury of Emily’s professional support and guidance, Scott was able to respond mindfully and effectively to increasing feelings of personal discontent with teaching. This transition facilitated Scott’s shift from teaching at a supportive, high performing school to now thoroughly enjoying the demands of creating, designing and facilitating Get Mentally Fit’s unique brand of pro-active mental health education.
Scott and Emily are passionate about actively researching and developing evidence-based approaches for enhancing student wellbeing. This translated into the Student Mental Fitness program.
Whilst it took a considerable period of time to get out of the groove of teaching life, including coming out in cold sweats at the thought of bells, Scott is reminded daily of the satisfying benefits of having the courage to follow his intuition and values into his new and exciting professional chapter.
Scott re-energises by surfing the beautiful Gold Coast breaks, reading books during the day (especially mid-week), contorting at yoga, and being trained by his Labrador Retriever Ellie.

Fly-on-the -wall coaching session with Tricia, who, has a bachelor's in math education.
Tricia graduated in 1999. She has balanced a career, family, and returning to Education after an absence and home relocation.
Her desire to teach was driven by her own struggle as a young student. She experienced teachers that didn't have the strategies for her to be successful.
In 2011 she expanded to teach students in special education. It brought her back to that purpose of giving strategies to those with greatest need.
Tricia began exploring careers 2 years ago. She realized teaching is becoming more and more civic responsibility. It was apparent to her when the pandemic hit and the news focused on students being out of school with a lack of food, abusive houses, strain on mental well being during extended at home times. Little was said about the content of education.
She realized her degree in education was outdated. Her experience was all in teaching. It would have meant a massive pay cut to transition into entry level.
So now with a Masters Degree on the horizon, can she manage her time?

Alicia entered the world of international school teaching in 2010, straight out of university and never looked back. She loves the challenges of living in and getting to know new cultures.
Teaching students from all over the world with different experiences and perspectives has been a wonderful experience. Unfortunately, after being unappreciated and worn down by poor, uncaring administration and the stressful and difficult situation she is in because of COVID-19, Alicia is taking the opportunity to exit teaching and pursue a new career.
She is exploring opportunities that allow her to continue to work with children and families who live abroad outside of their home cultures, before, during and after the transition to a new place.
Alicia supports "Expat Families" to leave well, arrive well and live well in their new cultures through 1:1, family, and small group coaching programs, debriefs, and workshops.

This is a recording of a 10 min triage call with Shelley, who generously allowed me to record our conversation.
Shelley is a teacher from the USA who got into teaching to help students and to give underprivileged students opportunities. She taught a year abroad in Spain on a Fulbright grant, and has taught here in the US for one year.
She began to consider leaving teaching after the Covid pandemic hit. She felt that teachers are highly educated, yet overworked and sorely underpaid. She also knew that teaching was detrimental to her mental health.
She is still currently teaching and is considering a transition out of teaching. However, she has not yet been able to teach history full time yet—one major push for her becoming a teacher.
She hopes to continue teaching in the meantime until she has given that dream job a go. Hopefully it works out, but she’s open to all kinds of career possibilities.

Leisa is a casual teacher living her best life on the beach on the south coast of NSW, Australia
Leisa trained as a teacher as it seemed the right thing to do at the time. Both her parents were teachers. She’s still teaching 30 years on, but has never really loved it, staying in Education due to a strong sense of duty, financial reasons and hoping things would change.
The only thing she truly loved was exercise and got far more fulfillment from that. She trained as a gym instructor and became a Personal Trainer, but it wasn’t enough to pay the bills when she was a single mum. So back to teaching she went.
These days she prefers a life of ease which casual teaching allows without the responsibilities and pressures of permanent work.
She prefers a happy and peaceful life by the beach with her dog Ruby and loves exercise and working on self-improvement daily, but Leisa is still looking for the ‘dream job’.

Sally completed a Bachelor of Science and needed a secure career path, so a natural fit was to complete a Diploma of Education. Her mother, aunt, uncle and great grandparents were all teachers so education as a career pathway was always an option.
Sally is in a transition phase. She hasn't left teaching but has dropped to part time employment. With her spare time, she redirected her energy and retrained as a Life and Health Coach, Hypnotherapist, Soul Regression Therapist and Forensic Healer.

After completing a degree in Environmental Science, Mary worked in a variety of jobs. Her love of travelling took her to South Korea where she worked as an English teacher. When she came back, she studied and became a primary school teacher. For the last fifteen years Mary has been teaching and in particular loved working with students from a refugee background where she felt, she truly made a difference.
Mary decided to get out of teaching because she felt the nature of teaching was changing from a community environment to a competitive one. As a teacher she felt devalued, deflated, defeated, demoralised, ‘de –everything’.
In January, Mary discovered Elizabeth’s podcasts and was inspired by listening to teacher’s stories and their journey into other careers. She is at the beginning of her coaching with Elizabeth and is working as a casual teacher while she discovers a world of other opportunities.

Vonnie began her dream job, teaching in a small primary school in 1981. This job finished with the birth of her first child. After years of raising her seven children and voluntarily organising school fundraisers, she began casual teaching at a high school.
This quickly led to a permanent teaching position. Over fifteen years, Vonnie honed her event preparation skills, fundraising for school charities and producing school musicals even after she had resigned to become a casual supply teacher.
Her third son’s passion for metal music saw Vonnie, her husband and her son organise many live music shows over the years.
By 2016, Vonnie realised she needed to work towards her newly realised dream of teaching others to plan and run amazing events. The plan is still coming to fruition. Vonnie is expanding her studies and has spent 2021 to date as a wedding planner extraordinaire for three of her children.

Lyn McLennan grew up in the NZ South Island town Oamaru. Lyn's desire to become a teacher was apparent from an early age. Her mother was a Primary School teacher, her sister became an Early Childhood Teacher and each of her two brothers married school teachers.
After completing her degree in the early 80's and teaching for three years, Lyn travelled abroad. Over 15 years she worked in a variety of different roles including chefing in Germany and working as a Children's Entertainer in Tokyo. After teaching in International Schools in Thailand, Lyn returned to NZ to be close to family.
She thoroughly enjoyed her role as Food and Fabric Specialist Teacher at Twizel Area School for 7 years, returning to Oamaru after the loss of her mother.
After suffering a SCAD heart attack, Lyn was advised to change her work environment. An opportunity arose to follow another passion, and Lyn set up her own Dog Daycare Business.

On leaving teaching: After 7 years of teaching I wanted to reduce my hours to 3 days per week to have more time to pursue my personal development as an artist. When this was refused, I took stock of my financial situation, and realised that if I retired (at 57) I could take my Superannuation and pay out our mortgage.
After discussions with my partner we both agreed that this would be a good decision, freeing me from an increasingly stressful work situation and giving me a chance at a full-time creative life while I still have the motivation and energy to pursue it.
What I do now: I have a small fencing business, which I started up 6 months after leaving teaching. I do all the bookkeeping and paperwork associated with the business and have some input to commercial decisions that need to be made, working approximately 10 hours a week.
The rest of the time I am a sole trader as a Contemporary Jeweller. I share a studio space with 4 other women, and am represented by 6 commercial galleries, and while I’m never going to earn anything like I did as a teacher, I have never been happier in my work.

After teaching primary school Physical Education and some upper primary for 9 years Dale Ringin headed into the world of small business. Initially using his education networks to develop business via after school programs for younger children, he also grew a fitness based event for schools that went across the entire state of Victoria, Australia.
While growing his business, Dale also became qualified as a personal trainer and began operating group fitness based training, akin to his Physical Education teaching days. Dale decided with a young family that it was time to focus on staying local with his fitness business and ceased to work with schools.
He discovered that training people was simply not enough to get long term health results which lead him to now having ten years experience with his weight loss coaching business. He still does a small amount of personal training but has far greater time leverage via his Australia wide weight loss coaching to spend with his wife Jodie and their three children.
Former art teacher, Michelle Wasserman, has left teaching and now helps coaches and course creators by writing high impact words (AKA copy) for their websites, email sequences, and newsletters.
Ross is a former secondary maths and drama teacher.
Although he really enjoyed teaching for several years, he is thrilled to be working in his new role in Christian ministry with the Australian Fellowship of Evangelical Students (AFES).
He is married with no children and on the weekend enjoys building in his backyard and buying slighter nicer coffees than on weekdays. He really is quite a normal person (so he says!)

All I ever wanted to do 'when I grew up' was to be a teacher and luckily for me, I reached that goal.
I spent 9yrs as a physical education and health teacher in the some of the best and worst secondary schools in Sydney, London and Vanuatu. I loved teaching but the money did not support my lifestyle, nor did the massive out-of-hours work support what I considered to be a fair return of my skills and enthusiasm.
So I started a health, fitness and education business outside of my teaching hours from my stinky garage with $200 of second-hand equipment. I grew it, quit my ‘day-job’, hired fabulous people, won awards, moved to bigger and better premises three times, became president of the industry body and sold it seventeen years later for the price and terms that I had asked for.
It was a dream come true."

I taught high school English for 4 years at a public school in the Washington DC metro area. While I enjoyed the act of teaching, the unrealistic demands of the position and lack of compensation made me realize that it was not sustainable for a well-balanced life.
2 years in, I decided to go back to school to earn my master’s degree in Higher Education Administration. In the spring of my 4th year in the classroom, I finished my degree and was offered a job in graduate admissions for a university. I took that position and haven’t looked back.
College admissions is my day job. The extra free time I’ve gained has allowed me to start a business that helps other people make career transitions through tailored resume and cover letter writing. I’ve found such peace and clarity since getting out of teaching, and I hope to help others do the same.

David Wright grew up on a small farm in central Queensland and after completing high school, spent five years training and working in a Metal Trade before deciding in 1980 to change careers.
He trained to become a Secondary School Teacher specialising in Manual Arts /Industrial Technology and Design and took up his first teaching position in 1982. Realising very early on in his teaching career that this was definitely NOT the profession he thought it would be, he began looking for opportunities to get out of teaching, but with a young family to support and a mortgage over his head he felt stuck.
After reaching the top of the pay-scale as a classroom teacher David became frustrated over difficulties managing his day to day finances. He realized that nothing was going to improve financially unless he found a new and more effective way to plan his cash flow. Driven by a desire to do better, David spent thousands of hours developing and fine-tuning a system to overcome the difficulties he had experienced. The system he developed worked so well he became very passionate about sharing it with other people.
He began by going into people’s homes at night and on the weekends and then with the help of a software developer, he created the ‘Simply Budgets’ software.
David left teaching in 2002 after an incident with a student that was 'the straw that broke the camel’s back’, and in the first year after leaving teaching he earned more money than in his entire 20 years as a teacher.
Simply Budgets was featured on A Current Affair, Today Tonight, Money Magazine, PC Authority (and more) and has produced amazing results in people’s lives with close to 30,000 customers around the world.
David has gone on to speak on stage in the UK, the USA, New Zealand and right around Australia on the topic of personal money management. He has also been interviewed on TV and radio many times in the USA and Australia.
In 2015 David created the Spending Planners Institute.
Having identified a huge gap in the financial services industry between Financial Counselling and Financial Planning, the Institute has trained almost 100 Spending Planners and in doing so has now created a new industry called Spending Planning that fills that gap.
The Institute is dedicated to training and supporting Spending Planners who in turn are dedicated to changing people’s financial direction, by providing them with education and accountability, whilst leading them through simple steps to set up their own personal Spending Plan based on David’s software system which is now web-based.

With the due date of his son fast approaching, Dustin knew he needed to change both his income and lifestyle.
His wife, Anna, was quitting her job as a nurse and Dustin was not making enough money to pay for the family's expenses. He describes himself as the clichéd, underpaid teacher scrambling to pay rent. Much of his workweek was spent away from his family in one long commute and two disempowering jobs. However, he began to dream.
He spent his commutes envisioning a new career: one that would empower his family and students. He made plans to work with students independently, as an online writing coach. He began creating a unique curriculum that would help students master writing skills and develop empowering mindsets. Through focusing on providing each student with as much value as possible, he began receiving excellent feedback from his clients: soon, his side-hustle became the family's main source of income.
Despite his success, he kept one of his jobs as a failsafe until in 2019 Dustin moved with his family to Chile. This forced him to fully commit to his business. He lived in Chile until making an emergency return home during the pandemic of 2020. Now, Dustin works as a full-time writing coach and content editor (with a soft spot for Latin America).

Shawna Gann hails from Anchorage, Alaska but has lived and traveled around the world. Her nearly 15 years living abroad has contributed to her cultural awareness and passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Shawna taught elementary school for most of these years abroad, but her contributions to administration and educator growth eventually led to her doctoral studies in Business Psychology.

While I always knew I wouldn’t be in the classroom forever, I didn’t know it would only take 17 short years to come to the conclusion that I needed to get out of teaching. I thought maybe 20 years and then transition to an administrative role- it was a solid plan until the stress of the classroom started to cash in on my health and personal life.
The journey out of teaching took much longer than I thought. How would I make enough money to support my family? How would I honor all the time and resources I had put in to mastering my craft? How would I do not being with the middle school aged kids I had grown to love? I was lost and frustrated. That was when I found the Get out of Teaching Facebook group. It didn’t take me long to sign up for a clarity call with Elizabeth. During the call, she helped me to see that there were ways that I could stretch my wings while still teaching - exactly what I needed to make all my ends meet. After some time, and some trial and error, I landed my non-teaching role.
Currently I am working on education, though not in the classroom. Instead I provide consultation to schools in the State of Maine on how to maximize their resources for student supports. This new role is my “day job” and now at night I have time to work on my side gig, Learn Lead Exceed - helping school leaders thrive in the waters of school administration. I am so thankful that I found Get out of Teaching group, and for Elizabeth’s coaching and insight.

I started teaching instrumental music fresh out of college at the age of 22. I knew I loved music, loved kids, and was good at teaching, but I had no idea exactly what being a teacher would require. I would often put in 60-70 hour work weeks, staying at school until 10:00 pm some nights. I had no life outside of teaching at all.
My physical and mental health suffered, and I ended up having to go on medication because of that. After 4 1/2 years at two different schools, I decided that I was never going to be able to live any sort of healthy, balanced life while being a teacher, and despite many obstacles, I left.
Months later, I am now in a new job as a supervisor for a behavioural health company that provides support to students in schools. I work with a wonderful team and am able to utilise many of the strengths and skills I developed as a teacher in this new position. My mental and physical health have exponentially improved, and I am no longer on any medication at all! I am so blessed to have been able to transition out of teaching and into a life that I am learning to love. I want to express my gratitude to Elizabeth for having me on her podcast and giving me a platform to share my story! It was a pleasure!

Gabbie Stroud is a freelance writer, novelist and recovering teacher. After years of jjuggling the demands of the primary classroom, she became disenchanted and
disillusioned, eventually making the painful decision to leave the profession she had loved.
In 2016, her critical commentary of Australia's education system was published
in Griffith Review's Edition 51 Fixing the System, which went on to be shortlisted for a Walkley Award.
Off the back of that recognition, Gabbie wrote her smash-hit memoir Teacher which was not only shortlisted for Biography Book of the Year at the 2018 ABIA Awards but also significantly contributed to the national dialogue on Education.
Gabbie lives on the far south coast of New South Wales, where she co-parents her totally awesome girls - Olivia and Sophie.
Anna is a kiwi, who's spent 10 years living and working around the world. Starting out in Television as a Camera Operator and Floor manager, then travelling extensively. She worked on Superyachts for 8 years in the deck department as a Bosun.
When she went to leave the Superyacht industry she struggled to know where to go or what to do, and had a bit of an internal crisis 'Do I work as a professional varnisher' or 'Should I be going back to what I did before?', 'What do I do, and where do I go?'
Working 1:1 with a coach she got clear on what she loved in life - helping others grow and develop, doing things that were different and exciting, exploration and being creative. She could see these things tied into all the best aspects of her previous careers and life. So she decided to step into a space where there was a desperate need for help.
'The industry always had so many people helping you to get in, helping you along the way, then when you go to leave, as in Education, it's like jumping off a cliff into the unknown...'
She said 'I saw so many others failing in their attempts to exit because they didn't truly know who they were or where they wanted to go, so they tried to replicate their current jobs on the outside world, and in turn finding it didn't work, and they came back to yachting. So I really wanted to stop this cycle'.
She now runs APetchell Coaching where she is the Yachting Exit Strategy Coach, helping yacht crew to get clear on who they are, and where they 'actually want to go' with their futures.
Anna works with people who are struggling with finding out how to use their skills in a different industry and marketplace. She loves helping people get really clear on their internal compass and discovering who they are, alongside exploring options and possibilities, and then putting these into practice.

"I decided to take my biggest passion of education and combine it with my #1 hobby in skincare. I knew that because I had no qualifications that no one would be interested in me, so while in Emergency Teaching I started an Instagram page called @the.girl.who.loves.cosmetics. I got rejected, rejected and rejected from beauty positions, even though my page did well from day 1.
Then I got offered an interview for one of the biggest cosmetic retails worldwide and excitedly the night before the interview my Instagram trended from one post - yay. I went for the interview and explained I was self taught, with no prior experience in the cosmetic retail industry, had no beauty qualifications but a successful and now trending Instagram page. I also exaggerated that teachers have so many skills that other professions don't: negotiation, strong communication, ability to talk in front of crowds, can cater to all learning styles, speak clearly, explain things easily to others etc.
They obviously took that on board and the lady who pushed for me to work in her store as her full timer was a previous teacher too who knew how capable teachers are to a business and asked me for to be placed with her. I have never had such an incredibly positive, supportive and insightful boss. We understand each other due to our teaching background that no one else in our business or store can relate to in the same way.
I had too much skincare knowledge for this job, more than required and so within 3 months I became the Skincare Expert at my store. I educated my staff, the state and the customers I serve on a daily basis through education, training, providing resources and providing feedback.
I have now been in this position for 3 years, I love it but like any jobs there are things I would like to alter and change. I was at home one day when a friend of mine of 15 years inspired me on Facebook, I reached out, asked questions and within days I signed up to a program that has helped me start my online skincare business. I analysed the positives and opportunities of my current situation - life and profession and thought "if I could make my dream life, what would it be and how can I get it to come true?"
Now it is happening every single day in front of my very eyes. I joined the program and have been working with the same highly capable and incredible team since. I waited until the isolation period began and haven't stopped work on this venture since. I am loving every single second of what I have created so far. I wanted a promotion, I didn't want what was available to me and so I created my own bigger and better dream."

This is what I was thinking the day I decided to leave the teaching profession. My knees were shaking. My heart was pounding. I thought about all there was to lose- the best pension in the country. The benefit package. The job security. Then I thought about what there was to gain.
Freedom to create a life I love to live.
Freedom to choose my destiny.
Freedom to change lives in a huge way.
I knew my purpose was greater.
And I jumped. I dove into coaching and my life has never been the same.

Kim’s undergrad degree was in Education- (Primary teaching) , which led to over 20 years teaching in schools both in Australia and abroad. Her teaching experience was across the general classroom, though primarily in the performing and visual arts disciplines. Inspired in childhood by a documentary about The Battle of the Alamo, Caleb went on to study history and continues to have an abiding interest in the San Antonio area.

After a career spanning more than 20 years in education, Tracey finally decided enough was enough and departed from her teaching career nearly three years ago. The decision to take the leap took a very long time though! She remembers her husband asking her to leave about 5 years prior to finally pulling the pin. She believes making the decision is the hardest part, following that, the journey gets exciting.
For the last 3 years, Tracey has worked with her husband in their Electrical and Air Conditioning business based in Sydney. The road was initially a little bumpy because Tracey thought she knew nothing about business and didn’t feel that she had an important role to play. Three years on though, and it turns out that so many of the skills she developed throughout her teaching career have been invaluable in the growth of their business. When it comes to communication and organisation, especially in the area of trades, Tracey is a whizz.
Life is great now! She is so grateful for her teaching career but even more grateful for the simple pleasures and balance that life provides her today.

From Shaun: In 2016, I was a broken and defeated young teacher who had fallen victim to the impact of burnout and mental illness. My relationships with those around me were compromised, but more importantly my relationship with myself was killing me. My soul was crushed and I was a shell of the inspirational teacher I aspired to be.
The self-doubt, pity, worry and anxiety that had manifested was draining me of all my energy resulted in a lost sense of purpose and direction. I lacked courage, perspective and resilience and this left me feeling empty, isolated and with no sense of fulfilment.

"I am so excited to share my story and how Douglas Dwellings got started. As former Assistant Principal in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. I have over 16 years of education. I recently decided to transition out of the education and into real estate full time. Over the years, I have had the opportunity of meeting so many different families, and I was able to get a glimpse of the disparities regarding housing in so many of my students. I had students that lived in very affluent areas as well as students that lived in low-income areas with limited resources. I remember having a student that told me he lived in a one bed apartment with his mom, two siblings, aunt, and three cousins. He would complain about having back pains all throughout the semester, as I formed a relationship with him, he shared that his back pain was from sleeping on the floor every night. In that moment, I knew that I had to do something to help in my communities- Douglas Dwellings was formed. We have a realtor on staff to help with all real estate needs. We also purchase, rehab, and rent out houses to support our local communities. We send quarterly flyers to inform our residents about things going on in our neighborhood. We are here to make a difference one house at a time."

In Episode 2 of Get out of Teaching, Elizabeth Diacos interviews Robyn Hawke, founder of Inspired Spaces. Robyn shares her story of her journey out of Education, the training she needed to do to work in her current role and the fears she faced about whether or not to stay or go.
At age 43, with a severely disabled teenage daughter, a 6-year-old daughter and a husband who frequently travelled, Robyn took the bold decision to go back to full time study.
Giving up a solid 20-year career in high school, teaching design, she chose to follow her passion. Despite all her in-depth knowledge, she still felt it was imperative to become fully qualified so she could confidently offer clients professional, knowledgeable and quantitative skills to give them comfort that her designs would be both structurally and aesthetically robust.
After graduating from the 3-year design course at Nepean Design Centre, she worked for Clarendon Homes to gain invaluable experience, learning how to design everything including the kitchen sink. This knowledge allowed her to understand contracts, builder’s inclusions and anything associated with building.
