Will Bonney was diagnosed with Type 1 at age 14 and has been living with diabetes for 38 years. In that time, he has seen many improvements in the tools and approaches to managing diabetes and is always open to new developments and regime changes. Will is married with two teenage children, and has a career spanning corporate finance, medical research (including at JDRF) and now is a psychotherapist based in the Sydney CBD. Julie’s PhD explores how apps for diabetes self-management can be adapted for people who have lower health literacy. This body of work will inform the design of an app developed by Western Sydney Diabetes.

Amy’s passion for supporting people with type 1 diabetes began when her brother was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of seven. She wanted him to live the richest life possible. Tammie is an Australian-trained bicultural Chinese dietitian and speaks fluent English, Cantonese and Mandarin. She has been working closely with the Melbournian Chinese community for 10 years. Jan Alford chats to Kerri Viney, author and researcher in this area. Kerri was a Registered Nurse and has additional public health qualifications and a PhD in public health. She has worked on tuberculosis (TB) management in several settings in Asia-Pacific and Europe for the past ten years. Currently she is a public health researcher at Australian National University and the Karolinska Institute (Sweden). She has a special interest in all aspects of TB management including risk factors for TB and the association between TB and diabetes mellitus, which is particularly important in the Asia-Pacific context and which was the subject of her PhD. She continues to undertake research on the association between TB and diabetes.

In this episode, the host Jan Alford will discuss a diabetes education program and service needs of young adults with type 1 diabetes with Ashley Ng, who is undertaking some research in this area as part of her PhD.

Ashley is currently completing her PhD in the field of mHealth use in diabetes education in young adults with diabetes during life transitions at Deakin University. She is also an accredited practising dietitian, a diabetes advocate and blogs about her lived experience with diabetes at bittersweetdiagnosis.com. Through her own experiences and work, she has developed a passion in digital health. Her area of interest revolves around integrating existing social media platforms and mHealth technology in patient-centered care to empower people with diabetes towards better self-management.

Since her diagnosis at the age of 19, Ashley has found herself thrown into diabetes advocacy. To date, her volunteerism has spanned across the International Diabetes Federation, Diabetes Australia and Diabetes Camps Victoria. Recently, she co-founded Beta Change - an organisation with an aim to foster collaboration between diabetes stakeholders towards creating positive change and up-skill future advocates and leaders within the diabetes community.

Professor Greenfield is an Endocrinologist and Clinical researcher. He is Head of the Department of Endocrinology and Director, Diabetes Services, at St Vincent’s Hospital. His current positions and roles include: Professor of Medicine, University of New South Wales; Clinical Associate Dean, St Vincent’s Clinical School, University of New South Wales; Editor-in-Chief, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Case Reports; Editorial Board member, Clinical Obesity; Council Member, Australia and New Zealand Obesity Society.

He previously held an NHMRC Neil Hamilton Fairley Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, which allowed him to study in the Departments of Medicine and Clinical Biochemistry, University of Cambridge, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, UK (2005-6, Supervisors: Prof Stephen O’Rahilly and Dr Sadaf Farooqi). He undertook a PhD at the Garvan Institute from 2001-2004, under the supervision of Prof D Chisholm, Prof L Campbell and Prof K Samaras). He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine with Honours (class 1) from the University of NSW in 1995.
