There are some subjects which are felt to be too awkward or embarrassing to ever get talked about in a straightforward and open way.
Instead, we skirt around them because we think we should know all the facts. Or we suppose that someone else has covered the topic – and much better than we ever could.
Subjects like sex, dating, personal care, style, safety, nutrition, periods, starting a family, having ‘that’ conversation with the kids… you get the idea.
Things we might feel are ‘off limits’.
We know from our community that people really want to know more on these so-called off-limits subjects.
As such, Vision Australia is developing ‘Nothing’s Off Limits’: a series of podcasts where experts and people with lived experience will sit down and discuss the topics we love to avoid but absolutely need to talk about.

In 2019, CERA Principal Investigator Dr Raymond Wong led a team of Australian researchers that developed the world’s most detailed retinal gene atlas.
The group examined the complex genetic sequences behind more than 20,000 individual retinal cells.
By creating this genetic map, researchers can better understand what enables cells to function and contribute to healthy vision, and what genetic signals cause a cell to stop functioning and lead to vision loss.

As of 11.59pm Wednesday, July 22, COVID-19 restrictions in the local government areas of Melbourne and Mitchell Shire will require people aged over 12 years-old to wear a face covering when outside their home, with some exemptions.
The Victorian Chief Health Officer also recommends that all Victorians wear a face covering when outside their home if it is difficult for them to remain 1.5m apart from other people.
We understand some people who are blind or have low vision might find wearing and putting on a mask more challenging or confronting than others. We’ve provided this information to try make this change easier for people.

Around 1.7 million Australians have diabetes. On average, one in three of these people have some level of diabetic retinopathy.
Regular eye checks are key to detecting the early stages of diabetic retinopathy. But about half of all Australians with diabetes do not get the eye checks they need.
Associate Professor Lyndell Lim, leads the Clinical Trials Research at CERA. Her main research interests are clinical studies in the field of uveitis and ocular immunology, and diabetic retinopathy.
Her team runs both investigator initiated and sponsored clinical trials that aim to investigate new treatments in a variety of ophthalmic disease.

In a new partnership with Lifeline Australia, Vision Australia Radio (VAR) is airing episodes of the podcast series Holding on to Hope across its radio network.
Holding onto Hope shares the stories of people who have come through the darkness of suicidality and the connection that gave them hope to continue living.
VAR's Jason Gipps discusses how the series aims to help people who are experiencing depression or anxiety and also those who might be supporting someone, such as a loved one or a friend, in similar circumstances.

Dr Lauren Ayton is leading a group of 21 investigators from CERA and the University of Melbourne to identify, assess and track the estimated 16 500 Australians with inherited retinal disease (IRD). This will allow the team to create a database with information about their vision, their genetic profile and whether they’re interested in taking part in clinical trials.
The research will also give the team a better understanding of the sub-types of IRD and how they progress.
Dr Lauren Ayton is a clinician-scientist with research interests in retinal disease, low vision and vision restoration. She is collaborating with Dr Thomas Edwards and Prof Keith Martin (CERA) on exciting new gene therapy programs for inherited retinal degenerations.

Dr Zhichao Wu is a clinical researcher at CERA's macular research unit, whose work is specifically around the development of new treatments to prevent advanced late stage/wet age related macular degeneration (AMD).
AMD occurs when the light-sensitive cells at the back of the eye break down, leading to loss of central vision. This can make it difficult to read, recognise faces, drive, and perform other everyday activities.
AMD is the leading cause of legal blindness and vision loss in Australia.

We speak with Access Technology Advisor for the Vision Shop, David Woodbridge about the educational tool, Cod Jumper, that opens up the world of computer coding to blind children.
Launched recently by Vision Australia, Code Jumper, was originally designed by Microsoft and developed by American Printing House, and assists 7-11 year olds, regardless of their level of vision, to learn the basics of computer coding and programming skills. A tactile system of oversized buttons, knobs and cords, means that students learn by touching and listening, exciting the hands as well as the imagination.

The Holman Prize is a major award from the Lighthouse Foundation worth $25,000, awarded for a project that encompasses a spirit of adventure for those who are blind or have low vision.
Singer, musician and Vision Australia braille music transcriber Jordie Howell is entering the Holman Prize with the aim of recording an album, in collaboration with Australian composers and composers who are blind or have low vision.
She's in conversation with Tess Herbert and talks about the inspiration and her dream of making the album.

Vision Australia responds to Covoid 19
Vision Australia CEO, Ron Hooten, said while these were challenging times for all, the organisation’s response is one of supporting the Australian Government in flattening the curve of Covoid 19.
This involves implementing a number of measures everyone has been asked to do including social distancing.
For now however, as much as possible it is about providing the services for our blindness and low vision community.

In the latest Meet the Expert audio series, Stella chats with braille trainer Mitzi Raaphorst about the Vision Australia braille courses available to adults aged 16 years and over.
Mitzi also says that learning braille as an adult requires time, patience, and a goal.
‘Braille isn’t hard but it requires work. Having a goal motivates people and makes them determined to put in the practice required,’ said Mitzi.
Goals might include being able to use braille in the community such as identifying public toilets, street signs or elevator signs or for independence at home such labelling grocery or medication items.
