Ross Brand with your Livestream Universe Update. YouTube is limiting live-streaming from its native mobile app to channels with a minimum of one thousand subscribers. But that doesn’t mean you can’t go live from mobile to YouTube regardless of your subscriber count.
Let’s talk about your options.
It’s worth noting that the policy changes don’t apply to live-streaming from your desktop or laptop browser or webcam or anyone using an encoder. If you have under 1,000 subscribers, there are 3rd party encoding applications and hardware encoders that will take you from your mobile device to YouTube Live.
Two of the best encoding apps for mobile live-streaming to YouTube are Switcher Studio and Wirecast Go. These enable you to add professional production elements to your mobile broadcast.
If you’d like to livestream from your mobile device to multiple destinations including Youtube Live, pair an encoding app with a cloud account from Switchboard Live and send your streams to any or all of the major social platforms.
Another option for YouTube channels of all sizes is using a hardware encoder. With the LiveU Solo, you can livestream directly from a mobile device, camcorder or DSLR camera from anywhere using LiveU’s cellular bonding technology.

The Sennheiser e835 is dynamic, cardioid vocal microphone that is designed for on-stage use. That means it will reject noise from other speakers or band members in live or recording environments. For hosting a remote livestream or podcast, or conducting interviews at events, the e835 enables the speaker to cut through the background noise.
At $99, the e835 is also a good option as a primary host or guest mic for anyone looking for an affordable solution. While the Shure SM7B remains my studio broadcast mic of choice, I will be taking the e835 with me to events and other broadcasting environments outside the studio. It’s a durable mic that sounds good right of the box on many voices, making the Sennheiser e835 an excellent microphone for remote livestreams, mobile podcasts and on-stage speaking engagements.

Facebook is giving publishers new ways to protect their content. The interactive nature of live streaming adds a more personal touch as viewers can ask questions in the chat and receive answers from hosts. E-commerce and live streaming are enormously popular in China. The LA Times cites the Boston Consulting Group in reporting that Chinese customers in 2016 spent more money online than customers in the US and UK combined.

Tech Crunch is reporting that Instagram will announce the launch of a long-form video hub next week. This looks to be an attempt by Facebook to challenge both YouTube and Snapchat’s Discover feature. Instagram is planning to open the doors for creators to upload 4k, full-screen, vertical videos. Tech Crunch reports Instagram has been working to bring social media stars and content publishers onboard before the announcement on June 20th. Expect the long-form videos to have an external link-out option along with potential monetization.

Facebook is now letting live streamers add recorded music to their personal videos. ‘Lip Sync Live’ is Facebook’s answer to music.ly and a move to become more relevant with younger viewers. Facebook has signed deals with leading music companies and began testing this new feature yesterday in certain markets. Users can select Lip Sync Live at the start of their live videos, while viewers will the see the artist and song highlighted with a button to follow the artist on Facebook. Reports indicate the ability to add music to Facebook Stories will come later this year.

LiveXLive has obtained live streaming rights to the Montreux Jazz Festival, including exclusivity for all livestreams delivered outside of Switzerland. It’s a 5 year deal between the world’s 2nd largest Jazz Festival and a leading digital distributor of live music. CelebrityAccess.com reports LIveXLive will build a production and content studio on the festival grounds. LiveXLive’s coverage of the 52nd Montreal Jazz Festival begins June 29th. It’ll be available on iOS, Android, Roku, Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV. In the US, Select audio livestreams can be heard on Slacker Radio.

There’s a new app for watching TV on your mobile phone. It’s called Dreams and it launched publicly this week with 10 new mobile TV channels. VideoInk reports Dreams TV has raised 5 million in Series A financing. Content partners include Bloomberg Media Distribution, Discovery and the BBC. Those seeking live programming can check out Newsflash featuring live feeds of major world events. There is also a popup channel called Wedding Week that will live stream the Royal Wedding on Saturday.

Dr Angela Mattke writes that live streaming allows “pediatric providers to reach beyond the clinic and engage with patients and caregivers wherever they take a mobile phone.” She says doctors can increase the probability of compliance with recommendations by sharing them consistently on social media. Dr. Mattke also writes about the ability of pediatricians to positively impact people they will never meet.

Viewers are not pleased with what they’re seeing so far from Major League Baseball’s Facebook Live game broadcasts, according to VideoInk.com. Fans are unhappy with the presentation of the broadcast, in particular “clunky graphics, wasted screen space and nonsensical closed captions.” These complaints from viewers differ from the gripes about delays and crashes that have plagued past livestreams of sporting events.

Facebook revealed three new features at Streaming Media East in New York City yesterday that will benefit Facebook Live users:
The one that stands out for audience growth is live cross-posting. That means your live video can appear on multiple pages at the same time while aggregating the views. This is different from sharing videos. Cross-posted videos are treated as posts published by all the pages where they appear.
Another new Facebook Live feature is called Persistent Stream Keys. Only one permanent stream key is needed to use the Facebook Live API, speeding the process for individuals and teams to go live.
And Facebook is testing a live rewind feature that should popular when released. Viewers joining a live video in progress will have the option of going back and watching what they missed or catching a highlight and then jumping back to the live content.

Facebook revealed plans for live streaming sports, comedy shows and concerts in virtual reality at yesterday’s F8 keynote. Oculus Venues is the name of the app and it will feature content from NextVR, which already has streaming partnerships with professional sports Leagues and Live Nation for concerts. Live social engagement will be a big part of the experience as you can watch events in VR with friends and lots of other people. The app will be available at the end of May on Oculus Go and Gear VR.

In Real Life or IRL live streaming too often means streaming while driving. And this is a trend that can have horrible consequences.
A YouTuber was involved in a serious car accident recently while distracted by reading comments on his phone. He failed to see the stop sign or notice the truck approaching him. He was reported to be in moderate to serious condition after being hospitalized with blunt force trauma and airlifted from the scene, according to CBS Philly & CNN Wire Services. The YouTuber said he was streaming to make the 40-minute drive less boring.
This follows a near-incident in which a popular and controversial YouTube IRL vlogger just missed causing an accident while driving and live streaming with other IRL streamers in his car.
Streaming Attorney Mitch Jackson has been a leader in raising awareness about distracted driving.
As a Livestream Universe guest in May 2017, Mitch drew a sharp line in the sand when it comes to streaming while driving.

Melonie Dodaro was a popular live streamer back in the early days of Blab, but she’s better known as one of the world’s top LinkedIn experts. Her new book, "LinkedIn UNLOCKED," dropped yesterday. In it’s first day, the book hit number one on Amazon in 7 countries, including the US, UK, Canada and Brazil and 63 categories.
Speaking of Amazon, the company will retain live streaming rights to NFL Thursday Night Football games for at least two more seasons. Amazon hopes to build on last year’s 310-thousand average viewers per minute. That accounted for 2.2 percent of total viewership.
Last year, Amazon paid more than 50 million dollars for the 11-game package. That’s 5-times more than Twitter shelled out for Thursday Night Football in 2016.
KNEKT TV will be live streaming the Daytime Emmy’s on Sunday, starting with the Red Carpet pre-show. You can watch it on the Daytime Emmys website or social media platforms. It will also be available on KNEKT’s digital network on Apple TV, Roku, iOS and Android.

Are you a video creator who enjoys the livestream experience, but would rather produce pre-recorded videos?
Facebook Premieres will enable you to distribute pre-recorded content as a livestream. This will create what Facebook calls “a live moment” with viewers able to interact and experience the video together.
On Live Stream Insiders, Krishna De said this really isn’t anything new.
Facebook says Premieres will also help video creators and publishers build excitement leading up to the release of a new video.
The feature is currently being tested. Facebook says it will be rolling it out to more users soon.

Technode is reporting China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism shut down 370 live streaming apps after examining nearly 5-thousand of them. There are also some major players in China’s livestream industry that are under investigation, including two that received a combined one billion dollars in funding. Areas being investigated include content that promotes “violence, pornography, gambling, superstition, and other values harmful to public morality.”
Beyonce racked up the highest YouTube livestream viewership of any performance in Coachella’s history. She had 458,000 simultaneous live viewers during her Saturday set.

The Emmy nominees included Newsday.com, MSGNetwork.com and WPIX-TV, but the winner of the NY Emmy for Interactivity goes to Mario Armstrong’s Never Settle Show, co-produced by Roker Media. Cathy Nolan was a cast member and the show’s caricaturist during the Emmy-winning first season. She said an Emmy never crossed her mind when she joined the show.
The Emmy for Interactivity rewards “cutting-edge innovation by actively engaging audience participation over multiple media platforms,” including “(digital and social media elements) to drive engagement before, during and after the broadcast.”
Cathy credits Mario’s hosting talent for the in-show engagement.
Cathy said Mario’s own journey in creating the Never Settle Show embodies what the show is all about.

A portable cinema camera is emerging as the headliner at the NAB Show in Las Vegas. The Blackmagic Design 4k Pocket Cinema Camera is light in weigh and looks similar in design to many mirrorless cameras. It produces full 4k frame resolution at 60 frames per second. For audio, it includes 4 built-in mics plus a mini XLR input with phantom power. it is set to retail at $1295.
Of course there’s lots of live streaming from NAB. In addition to the official event livestream with Jeff Adams, keep an eye out for broadcasts from live video production brands and services.

The debut episode featured Stephen and Carter Sharer, who talked about how they went from zero to 2 million subscribers in just over a year. ESPN has a new streaming service called ESPN Plus expected to launch on April 12th. Subscribers will pay $4.99 per month for access to thousands of live sporting events and original programming. TechCrunch reports the ESPN app will add a special live streaming section with access to the company’s cable channels. What's the best microphone under $75 for #livestreaming and #podcasting? I watched popular podcaster Pat Flynn (of Smart Passive Income with Pat Flynn) test 3 mics and I thought one was clearly the winner, but at the end he equally endorsed 2 of the 3 mics.
