Welcome to The Path to COP (26) Podcast by Nordea Asset Management and in association with the Global Ethical Finance Initiative. Produced and Hosted by New Fund Order.

Episode 2 - Gender agenda: "Full and Meaningful Participation of Women and Girls in Climate Change".

The UNFCC had already specifically noted how climate change was impacting women globally, more than men, whilst at the same time the tone within our own industry… with respect to the social agenda, worker inequality and diversity… had been rising in recent years. So there is plenty for COP to talk about today.

Join me, JB Beckett, your host and guests Bev from CityHive and Katarina from Nordea for the second Path to COP podcast, covering;

We look at % representation of women fund managers, the number is way too low.. why hasn’t the industry evolved in over two decades?

Attracting women into Asset Management, what are we getting right, what are we getting wrong?

Education; how do we use Education to attract and promote women into key professions?

Why does better gender equality help cognitive diversity and EQ in the investment process? Is the ESG debate becoming too focussed on Net Zero at the risk of the social agenda?

Equality and diversity on boards and Exec level, why is it important for better ESG?

Are Quotas necessary or do they confuse the mission?

How can investors deploy capital better to support gender equality and sustainable and social aims more generally?

• *What can fund allocators do to address equality and diversity?

Covering;

How important are Climate-related strategies to becoming ‘Net Zero’?

What progress are you hoping to see at COP?

Net Zero pledges, powerful or platitude?

Is divestment the answer?

What challenges must organisations overcome to develop a net zero strategy?

What’s driving the large number of net zero commitments?

What tools and frameworks can help investors on their net zero journey?

What role does the government play in delivering net zero?

Is Carbon Unit Pricing, is it key to climate change?

Is carbon offsetting a necessary evil or a useful tool?

How can investors ensure that their performance on various carbon metrics isn’t disconnected from what’s happening in the real world?

As well as; circularity, data and greenwashing.

Welcome to Fight Club! For Season Two of the NFO podcast, step beneath the surface to debate the difficult issues facing asset management. Time to take this underground!

Each round is a panel debate of two teams, one captain per team plus 2 team members.

Active versus Passive 🥊 💥 Round 1

Active captain Simon Evan-Cook will be joined by Lucy Walker, CFA and Ben Conway 💥
Passive captain Mark Northway will be joined by Robin Powell and Larry Swedroe 👊

Equal time allocated, rapid debate. Each team will be allocated circa 25 minutes total time, monitored by JB. When each team is talking then time will automatically count down. If the team runs out of time then the remaining time is handed to the opposing team.

Audience: Fund selectors, family offices, multi-managers, advisers, allocators, gatekeepers and distributors. We appreciate that there is already a high volume of podcasts and that fund selectors are heavily marketed to, however we believe that within this niche there is little competition and significant demand for content of this type. Given this gap I believe that it is the time to use the format of a podcast to bring together the community to discuss hot topics that are all too often led by partisan echo chambers and only discussed in opposing vacuums!

1) Can anyone truly be a passive investor? Aren’t we all different shades of active? Few buy a naive portfolio, whether it is market cap, factor investing, systematic strategies, SmartBETA?

2) Have we reached or will we reach “peak passive”? Did passive just get lucky with Big Tech or is the success of index investing just common sense?

3) Thinking the behavioural biases at play, is the concentration of assets around Star Managers the best argument for Active or Passive?

Fighter Bios

Captain Team Passive: Mark Northway, investment manager at Sparrows Capital, NED and consultant.

Larry Swedroe, Principal and Director of Research at Buckingham Family of Financial Services.

Robin Powell, Journalist, investor advocate, financial educator & content consultant. Head of client education at RockWealth, Editor for 'The Evidence Based Investor' blog, Executive Director of Regis Media and Ember Television.

Captain Team Active: Simon Evan-Cook, Manager of Multi-Asset, Multi-Manager Funds & Citywire Columnist. Blogs at nevermindthesilverbullets.com. Fund Manager, Downing Fund Managers.

Lucy Walker, Giving fund research teams the tools they need to succeed | Founder at AM Insights | Deputy Chair at Aurora | NED at HINT | Co-CEO at Changing Digital.

Ben Conway, Head of Fund Management at Hawksmoor Investment Management.

Welcome to the Darkside of Fund Management and Research... the New Fund Order.
Episode 20: Into the Mind

The sky arcs obsidian, as thunderous clouds roll in and heavy rain pours down. We are forced to open an iron door and take refuge inside an old hospital only to be greeted by the wails of its patients within. What dark horrors await us in this place?

Step into our asylum of cognitive discourse to explore the dark corners of the mind of the fund selector. Everything from cognitive bias to heuristics, star mangers, monsters and criminality. We walk down the chilling corridors, with Mind Equity's Nuala Walsh, as we ask the taboo, the frightening and the controversial. This season finale then offers the culmination of a series of behavioural episodes in Season 1. We ask;

Are Monsters and Villains the psychological flip side of star manager culture and ideology?
How can overweighting IQ over EQ hurt outcomes, our desire to be cleverer then the next person?
What does it mean to observe irrationality?
How can understanding the peak-end rule help in decision making?
Should selectors be more like FBI agents when researching fund managers or attending a blow up?

About Nuala: A global strategic adviser, Non-Executive Director, behavioural scientist, and award-winning marketeer, with decades of experience in asset management, investment banking, and consulting.

Founder of MindEquity - a business, brand, and behavioural science consultancy.

Founder and Director of the world's first Global Association of Applied Behavioural Scientists.

Welcome to the New Fund Order. An Orwellian journey into the Darkside, the Frontier and the Fringe of Finance.

In our ever ending journey to tackle the tough topics in our industry, I talk to Justin Onuekwusi about his ‘I am’ campaign and ‘Talk about Black’.

We discuss why there is a lack of diversity, why there is not enough black representation in finance and asset management… and indeed fund selection. What are the industry biases, what are the structural barriers to progression, are monikers like ‘BAME’ helpful, what can fund selectors do to become allies?

Welcome to the New Fund Order. An Orwellian journey into the Darkside, the Frontier and the Fringe of Finance.

We speak with SharingAlpha.com co-founder Oren Kaplan on creating his innovative global platform, the wisdom of the crowd, building community and insights against the backdrop of a global pandemic. In a more distanced world, is SharingAlpha.com the real ‘new normal’?

"SharingAlpha went live in April 2016 and has already become the world's largest community of professional fund buyers.

Mission

  • Sharing Insight on the Many not the Few
  • No single research team can cover the wide range of funds available and thus typically focusing their efforts on a very limited number of funds, those with excellent track record have become blockbuster or 'mega funds'. Consequently, over 95% of the funds lack independent qualitative analysis and don't receive significant flows.
  • Using the power of the internet we are able to scale and offer forward-looking ratings on funds, from our community of professional fund investors, to share insight, to share alpha.
  • Recognising top fund allocators"

Welcome to the New Fund Order. An Orwellian journey into the Darkside, the Frontier and the Fringe of Finance.

Our first New Fund Order debate, about 'that manager'...

We debate the ins and outs, the ups and downs of that 'Oracle of Oxford' and the whole sad and sorry affair which rocked fund allocators, distributors and the divinity of the star manager.

Helping guide us through the detail are the two prominent writers David Ricketts of 'When the Fund Stops' and Owen Walker 'Built on a Lie'.

When the Fund Stops by David Ricketts | Harriman House (harriman-house.com)
Built on a Lie (penguin.co.uk)

Check out the trailer here: https://youtu.be/M9nhgC64rCI

We explore the collective culpability by the; regulator, the regulations, authorised corporate directors, depositaries, buy list providers, pension schemes, media, even the fund structure and all who had a hand in the rise and fall of the UK's most famous fund manager.

We explore whether there was a duality of culture, was/is there an inherent flaw in the open-ended fund model? Is the desire to build book ultimately a recipe to create "supertanker funds" and undermine outcomes for investors, how can we stop the worst of investor herding out of funds? Do fund allocators get too close to their fund managers? Was there simply a lack of due diligence by fund allocators? Was it a tale of misogyny, risk raking, and greed? Was there too much hubris? What did the manager get right, what wrong? What could allocators do better? How do we inflect, reflect and reconcile?

Will selectors make the same mistake again? Probably. What lessons can we learn? Hopefully a few...

Episode #15

The water ripples as the air chirps to the sound of bicycles. It could only be Copenhagen! I sit down and discuss what makes fund selection different in Denmark and the wider Scandi-fication of wealth management across Europe and beyond. We tackle ESG, diversity, quantification and the introduction of ETF products. A fascinating and insightful discussion, framed by the unexpected Russian tones of Leon Trotsky, during his stay in Copenhagen, on the future of Europe and balance of global power.

With Anders Bertramsen, Head of External Products NAM

"I have the privilege of managing a small group of highly skilled investment professionals based in both Copenhagen and Stockholm." Previously Anders was with Handelsbanken, Lærernes Pension, Kirstein Finansrådgivning. Currently with Nordea Asset Management (NAM), part of the Nordea Group, the largest financial services group in the Nordic region.

'In Defence Of October'A speech delivered in Copenhagen, Denmark in November 1932Leon Trotsky: In Defence Of October (1932)

His views will surprise many. See the film on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/WiK_8YD6ob8

"In 1935 Trotsky was compelled to move to Norway, and in 1936, under Soviet pressure, he was forced to seek asylum in Mexico, where he settled at Coyoacán. He was represented as the principal conspirator, in absentia, in the treason trials of former communist opposition leaders held in Moscow (1936–38). The evidence of treasonable plotting, however, was later proved to be fictitious. Leon Trotsky - Exile and assassination | Britannica

**Welcome to the New Fund Order. An Orwellian journey into the Darkside, the Frontier and the Fringe of Finance.

Normal service resumed, as we catch up with Hong Kong veteran and Welshman Richard Harris of Port Shelter as to expand our appreciation for noise and narratives in markets. We cover;**
Words: Truth, Bias, Noise and Narrative.. How do words and media change how investors think and react?

Asia: Philosophically and practically.. in the breakdown are there key differences in the way wealth is managed in Hong Kong and Asia to Europe? How does that impact the selection of fund managers?

Fiscal policy: G7, taxation. What trickle down effects do you see it having on markets and in turn funds? Inflation: Global inflation and regional variance. Are we facing into a new cycle of higher inflation and will central banks freeze from raising rates leading to a collapse in real yields? Are Bond markets a bust? How should fund allocators hedge their portfolios from inflation scenarios?

Trade: Global free trade, is it in danger? How important is the Trans Pacific trade agreement and bringing U.K. into that trading scrum? How does US and China best play U.K. and Europe?

Macro: Capital flows into and out of China, is China ascending US as the global leader economically, and from there in Financial markets? Is the world now chasing the tail of the Dragon?

Equities: Has the question in global equities become too narrow and binary on the fortunes of Big US Tech, should fund allocators be going wide and looking to the wings to run the ball...

Excerpt;

"How noise affects the decisions we make

Truth, bias, noise and narrative. by Richard Harris

It is now a truth universally accepted that opinions and decisions are made both intuitively fast and analytically slow. Daniel Kahneman’s book “Thinking Fast and Slow” revolutionised how we think about how we think. For those looking to wade through Kahneman’s small-print, 500-page life’s work, I recommend starting with Michael Lewis’ book “The Undoing Project”, which explains the relationship between “Danny” and his friend and collaborator Amos Tversky. Amos sadly died before he could receive the Nobel Prize that he would have won with Kahneman in 2002.

..The good news is that most of our decisions are close enough right. Armed with Kahneman’s ideas, we can better optimise them if we are aware of those narratives which are so noisy that they are (from Macbeth), “a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”

Richard Harris is Chief Executive of Port Shelter Investment and is a veteran investment manager, banker, writer and broadcaster and financial expert witness.

**Welcome to the New Fund Order. An Orwellian journey into the Darkside, the Frontier and the Fringe of Finance.

Bombarding your airwaves, this episode explores the implications of behavioural finance and Daniel Kahneman's latest book 'Noise'. How is 24/7 media impacting investing decisions? We go overwatch with our guide, and experienced asset allocator and behavioural observer, Joe Wiggins (ex ASI).

Together we examine 'noise' versus investor and fund selector biases and; variability and inconsistency, which is even more difficult to manage compared to consistent biases, how base rates and other tools can be used to cut through that noise and ultimately explore some of the behavioural trappings common to wealth management and fund research.

Welcome to the New Fund Order. An Orwellian journey into the Darkside, the Frontier and the Fringe of Finance.

In another special extended episode where we talk diversity and 'Women'.. and exactly what is 'their place' in asset management and how has that changed in 50 years of discussing gender equality? Is it all talk and ALL trousers?

How do fund selectors address the duality of ‘woman’ from the gender Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) point of view? We contrast the old and new in this gender-charged episode. I try to get beneath the corporate platitudes and diversity glitter, with City Hive's Bhavini 'Bev' Shah, as we explore the biases in fund selection towards women, discuss education in context to EQ v IQ, neural diversity, touch on 'Woodford' and debunk notions of key MAN misnomer or ‘MANager’ syndrome!

Welcome to the New Fund Order. An Orwellian journey into the Darkside, the Frontier and the Fringe of Finance.

**In a feature-length Radiocast we venture into the Science and Science Fiction of Asset Management as luminaire and writer Tom Chatfield explores our 'MetaCognition' and the wars in our world between people, and between humans and technology. Framed with original clips from the famous Mercury Theatre ‘War of the Worlds’ production by non other than Orson Wells.

How do we reconcile protest in Finance? Why are people revolting against established structures? How is data being used by us and against us? What is ‘surveillance capitalism’? Are markets efficient or manipulated? Do we collectively face a war of the worlds, in social media, data and society?**

Bio:

  • Dr Tom Chatfield (@TomChatfield) is a British author, tech philosopher and educator. His books exploring digital culture are published in over two dozen languages. His latest non-fiction book, Critical Thinking, is a bestselling textbook in its field; and his debut novel, This Is Gomorrah, was a Sunday Times thriller of the month. He’s interested in improving our experiences and understanding of technology. Welcome to the New Fund Order. An Orwellian journey into the Darkside, the Frontier and the Fringe of Finance.

In a special extended feature we go all Zen master with one of Europe's most experienced fund allocators, Clive Hale (aka 'Bear'). Explore his 'unique' philosophy since entering the industry in 1979.Robert Pirsig sets the scene through his book 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance'. Join two bikers on a journey of the mind. Is Finance a human construct, what of the laws of nature? What does mindfulness actually mean when it comes to deciding on a fund manager? Has ESG approached fanaticism and how do we internalise ESG? Have we gone the wrong way on due diligence? Do we confuse size with quality? How do we respond when a fund goes wrong? Is there room for contrary opinion, today, what about the esoteric like Bitcoin and Non Fungible Tokens?

Bio: Clive has been involved with the investment industry for over 40 years as a fund manager, funds researcher, non-exec director, investment committee chairman, event speaker and consultant. He is a consultant to, amongst others, a company he co-founded in 2012 – Albemarle Street Partners – a boutique investment consultancy and discretionary fund manager, and is co-manager of the Atlantic House Total Return fund.

Welcome to the New Fund Order. An Orwellian journey into the Darkside, the Frontier and the Fringe of Finance.

**Somewhere a metronome begins ticking, he clicks his fingers then begins to tap dance across the room, then up the walls and finally onto the ceiling! He sets the beat for how he has developed funds over the years and dances to his own tune.

I am joined by veteran fund strategist Jean-Francois Hautemulle. Join us as we share experiences from the buy AND sell side. Is M&A a game of musical chairs? What are the little tricks Distribution doesn't want buyers to know? We debate changes to the product; lifecycle, positioning, asset concentration, organic versus inorganic growth, innovation and evolution. The Scale game: why do supertanker funds exist; why do so few new funds reach 100 million in size? Why should fund development be seen by ExCos as strategic not tactical? Is ESG here to stay and how should we develop products to better meet investor needs? What then is value?**

Fund selectors are unwittingly curated by unseen product managers and strategists into; new funds, sectors, fashions and vogues. How funds are then developed have a huge impact on the end outcomes for investors. So what does responsible and sustainable fund development look like?

Welcome to the New Fund Order. An Orwellian journey into the Darkside, the Frontier and the Fringe of Finance.

**On the air you can hear the strings begin to play, as clouds roll off the Swiss Alps and Lake Geneva ripples on a gentle breeze.. The sun shines on Switzerland in a way rarely paralleled by any other market and there is much to be thankful for. European fund selection more broadly, as it is inextricably linked with the growth of asset management, too has enjoyed a beautiful renaissance over the last 20 years but is that Belle Epoch about to darken, will reflection give way to requiem?

I am joined by arguably Europe's most famous fund allocator, Mussie Kidane of Pictet. Join us, as two old soldiers of fund selection, as we reflect; on our careers, how fund selection and asset allocation has changed, the impact of ROBO and whether professional fund investing has a future. One retired; the other very much active. How then to keep tempo in an ever changing world?**

Time is ever-unrelenting yet, 13 years on from the Great Financial Crash (GFC) and the awful realisation of the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme, many things continue to haunt us as fund allocators. Our history is littered with blow-ups, crashes and poor risk management. On the news of Madoff's passing; and as the fall-out of the Archegos scandal continues, is today's generation of fund allocators equipped to appreciate the risks in the system? Many of whom had no first hand recollection of the GFC let alone the dotcom bubble. In an age of complex social media, Crypto, asset bubbles, momentum, indexation, digitalisation, automation and tokenisation, Mussie and I debate the implications for asset allocation in this very special episode of New Fund Order.

**A cold wind is blowing.. As night falls on Europe, in the City a bearded stranger checks his watch under street lamp, beneath his trilby and overtly 60s square glasses he checks the time. As he waits he grasps onto his Russian 8mm cine, in the shadows lurk all the secrets of the European fund distribution industry. His contact, a Frenchman, has the dossier he needs but will he talk?

Join us in the noir of fund costs and governance, just how well do fund selectors understand the costs of the funds they are paying for and does the industry offer good value?**

Many things change yet some things remain the same. Our industry is nearly 8 times larger than 2 decades ago but does it offer investors eight times the experience? Our contact is Hugues Gillibert, co-founder of Fitz Partners, our de facto 'man on the inside' and keeper of the industry secrets. We go all espionage with Hugues to discuss value for money.

**Picture a dark night.. rain pours down the ramparts as a storm thunders in the distance.. the light picks up the horde; an army of wannabe fund managers and eager asset-deprived boutiques descend upon the fortress walls. Yet before them stands a warrior, a knight, a paladin, a Gatekeeper to test them.. who proclaims 'Thou Shall.. Not.... Pass!!!!'

Join us into the mud, the murk, this gothica come rock opera.. the world of Fund and investment Gatekeepers. Who are they, what do they do and... are they any good?**

Billions of assets are being managed and influenced by powerful fund gatekeepers. If you are not on their list then you are definitely not getting in. So many have fallen in this distribution blood-soaked field.. yet who governs the Gatekeepers? With ever centralised investment propositions and the rise of model portfolio services, as an industry we face regulatory arbitrage, asset concentration, a climate crisis, momentum markets, group think and star manager biases.

Our safe pathfinder through this battlefield is Bella Caridade-Ferreira, founder of Fundscape as we discuss the revelations of her Gatekeeper study... a most gory affair where more than one poor soul might lose their head..

**Is it 'High Noon' for existential risk, what does it mean to be an existential fund selector in a world of pandemics, cyber risk, climate crisis and digitalisation?

With a classic spaghetti western as a stage, we draw our six-shooters, with Jerome Tagger, and aim our sights on 'preventable surprises' and the forms of risk fund selectors face in an ever complex world. What risks should fund selectors worry about, what do we mean by black swans versus grey rhinos?**

Fund selectors, advisers and investors have struggled to analyse fund risk in its many forms. It has a profound effect on asset allocation and assigning a risk budget for investors. Yet the industry remains stuck, as if on rail road tracks, in past risk, ex post, regression, volatility and past loss.. are fund selectors being rustled and herded like cattle by the industry?

Join me and Marshall Tagger as we take fire.. Revolvers loaded.. to the sounds of the West and the howls of the coyote! Once Upon a Time in the West..

**Are funds flying in formation when it comes to fund costs? On episode 003 we go all supersonic with ex Allfunds selector Chetan Modi, of 360FundInsight, on; fund transparency, jurisdiction wars and whether size really does matter.

We lock on target, on whether where you buy your fund manager is as important as who**? Why not all shareholders in a fund are treated equally. How is technology changing the fund supply chain? Why do CEOs struggle to embrace it? Who are the Disrupters? Why is there a cost war between huge 'supertankers' and small boutiques? Do ETFs add value in the long run? What is stopping Google or Amazon coming in and taking over?

Fund selectors, advisers and investors have struggled to analyse fund costs accurately. Better tools and due diligence are needed. Chet explains why he co-created the Eagle Eye tool and the problem he sought to fix. Educating and supporting fund buyers on cost analysis.

Join me and Top Gun Chet as we dare to fly into the fund costs danger zone. Missiles locked.. framed by the chilling words of President Spiro Agnew on education, the visceral versus the intellectual..
