On this episode of Pop Music For Smart People I am featuring Indigenous music artists from across the globe. The artists being featured today are Otyken, The Halluci Nation, UUTAi, Olox, Snotty Nose Rez Kids and Electric Fields. All of these Indigenous artists are creating music that infuses the traditional sounds of their tribes and communities with current music sounds and genres such as edm, pop music and house music. These artists are implementing cultural vocal techniques such as throat singing and chanting as well as performing with traditional Indigenous instruments such as animal hide drums, wooden flutes and whistles and the jaw harp. Using these traditional methods and instruments they are creating beats and tracks that sound like current music especially electronic popular music. Along with making music all of the Indigenous people featured on this episode are activists for their communities and are involved in movements addressing climate change, cultural appropriation, Indigenous peoples' human rights, land return to Indigenous communities and raising awareness about missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls(MMIWG). Below are some links to educational resources surrounding these communities and issues. There are also some links to organizations and foundations you can donate to or volunteer for if you can. Come and listen to some of the amazing music being created by Indigenous artists from around the world including the US, Canada, Siberia and APY lands of Australia.

Hey what's your zodiac sign? In part two of Pop Music For Smart People's zodiac music pairing we cover the second set of 6 signs that we didn't discuss last week. I am taking each one of the zodiac signs and picking 3 words or concepts to describe each of those signs and from that i am matching up musical artists to each one based on the mood and vibe of their music and the lyrical content in their tracks. The 6 zodiac signs we are gonna talk about today are Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius. The artists being matched up to each of these signs are (in no particular order) Salt Cathedral, RAAVE TAPES, Anna Shoemaker, Verite, Lafawndah and Little Monarch. So come listen and see if your zodiac's musical pairing feels like its a match or if I was way off (which I 100% was not lol).

In this episode I feature two groups who my husband is always asking me to turn down the volume on because I have to listen to their music very loudly. They are ASL and Haiku Hands. ASL is a group comprised of six pop music songwriters and producers who accidentally formed the pop group during a songwriting session. Haiku Hands is a trio of three Australian ladies who combine pop music, dance and visual content to create truly unique and catchy pop anthems. You are gonna want to turn this episode all the way up because these songs are guaranteed to have you up and dancing!! I also talk about Exit/In a venue I have featured on the show before in Nashville, TN because there is a chance they will be shut down.
