Thank you for listening to this track produced by the Art Gallery of South Australia. Join curators Tracey Lock and Elle Freak for a tour of Dangerously Modern, the first major exhibition to focus on the vital role of Australian women in the development of international modernism.Featuring more than 200 works of art, Dangerously Modern invites visitors to embark on a journey of the senses. Artistic explorations of colour, light, form and movement offer moments of contemplation, love, loss and transcendence. Ranging from large public statements to private portrait miniatures, the featured works challenge preexisting notions of ambition and success. They also expand understandings of modern art movements such as realism, impressionism, post-impressionism, cubism and the emergence of abstraction. For more information visit agsa.sa.gov.auImage: Hilda Rix Nicholas, born Ballarat, Victoria 1884, died Delegate, New South Wales 1961, The pink scarf, 1913, Paris, oil on canvas, 80.5 x 65.0 cm; Gift of Mrs Roy Edwards through the Art Gallery of South Australia Foundation 1993, Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide.

Thank you for listening to this talk produced by the Art Gallery of South Australia.Join visiting artist Nell as she shares the stories sewn into her monumental quilt featured in Radical Textiles. The NELL ANNE QUILT includes embroidered patches made by 441 people from across the world, each patch honouring a significant woman by name.Nell's quilt emerged from a residency idea she had for the Colin McCahon House in Aotearoa New Zealand. Although McCahon's paining is often reflected in Nell's work, she wanted to honour his wife, Anne (née Hamblett, 1915–1993), an artist in her own right.Nell explained that ‘each patch and story is a world unto itself, and I felt the responsibility of honouring those stories. The time and love that went into the patches surprised me. It was a beautiful gift cycle, where people donated their mental, emotional and manual energy to something greater than one woman’s story, to form a chorus of female stories’.For more information visit agsa.sa.gov.auPhoto: Alisha Gore

WARDROBE CRISIS with Clare PressTapestry! Embroidery! Quilting! Tailoring! Can Textiles Change the World? You BetSeason 10, Ep. 227Friday, December 6, 2024From Victor & Rolf's "Get Mean" frock through Jordan Gogos's radical upcycling projects to Paul McCann's "Sovereignty Never Ceded" gown, certain items of clothing speak loudly - with intention - about the times we find ourselves in. Let's not forget the long traditions of tapestry-making, quilting, embroidery, and the newer but related concepts of stitch-n-bitch craftivism. Cloth can be a radical medium. You might call it soft power, for its undeniable tactility - but don't mistake soft for weak.

With a career spanning two decades, Mark Valenzuela is an Adelaide-based artist who works between Australia and the Philippines. Hear from Trawlwoolway artist Julie Gough, who will speak about her installation for Tarnanthi titled Psychoscape on display in Gallery 8 at AGSA. In this unsettling body of work, Gough positions colonial works of art from the AGSA collection alongside new moving image works and objects that expose stories she has uncovered through ongoing research into the archives of her ancestors in Tasmania. She challenges the established colonial narrative perpetuated in Australia’s national story and does not shy away from speaking the truth about what she uncovers.

Karla Dickens has brought her own sinister circus to Adelaide, 'A Dickensian Country Show' is a uniquely Australian iteration of the funfair, absorbing and repurposing the trappings of regional country fairs and Easter shows. Dickens looks behind the scenes of carnival life, and beckons us into the side-shows and boxing rings to reframe the ‘greatest show on earth’ as a carnivalesque pastiche of Australian history and politics. Her fortune tellers offer portents of doom and visions of a ravaged planet. In no holds barred fashion, Dickens’ troupe of carnival performers speak to the atrocities of colonization, declaring that ‘True Horror is the massacre of Australia’s first people’.
