The poem is a sort of mourning poem for the poet’s wife, the photographer, Alix-Cléo Roubaud, who died suddenly and young, in an accident — it is about the hotel that they used to, and he continues to, stay at in London … and also about a photograph she took of him from the balcony, walking below in the street, so you keep shifting between the viewpoint of where the photograph was taken from and the person walking in the photograph itself — as well as the memories between the two viewpoints …. the repetitions, of one, two three four etc like a beat are I think based on Japanese walking meditations. Japanese poetry has been a constant formal model for his work..(His second book was called Mono no aware and “reflected the desire to make poetry a spontaneous emanation of ambient reality” (Michael Sheringham, Everyday Life, 2006, p. 350). "Just to clarify, the piece is actually a song usually sung in Japanese by my friend Tamio Shiraishi. He often sings during very intense cathartic performances. These songs are kinda legendary among people who follow Tamio’s music but very few non Japanese speaking people know what they are. Rumors float around that he sings kamikaze, yakuza and prison songs. In 2009 when he was here in Glasgow performing with our trio Ki. I took the opportunity to ask him about the songs and he happily provided translation of his entire repertoire.
