This podcast features interviews with social workers in Sydney, Australia, showcasing diverse areas of practice, social work stories, successes, and challenges, and providing information on media and other resources that can be accessed to help inform and educate people who are curious about the profession or wanting a career change.
In this episode I speak with Thanh, an accredited mental health social worker with intensive experience working with people who have a history of complex trauma and addiction. She has recently developed her own private practice and is passionate about addressing stigma and improving access and engagement in mental health services for Vietnamese and Asian populations more generally.

In this episode I speak with Su, a care manager at The CareSide, assisting and manage clients in accessing support through their home care packages. Originally from Shanghai, Su spent three years as a corporate banker before moving to Adelaide to complete her Master's degree at Flinders University in 2019, chasing her desire to make a meaningful difference in people's lives through social work.

In this episode I speak with Shahil, who has worked across the areas of youth homelessness, disability and suicide prevention and aftercare and now works in policy, advocacy and social campaigning. Shahil believes in social justice and advocating for the rights of people experiencing challenges in life, finding that focusing on intervention at a micro-level is just as critical as issues on a macro-level.

In this episode I speak with Carolyn, who has worked in the trauma, child protection, domestic violence and mental health sectors in Australia and the UK. In addition to her Bachelor and Masters's degrees in Social Work, Carolyn has a Masters in Adult Education and is undertaking a Masters in Applied Neuroscience. She has published more than 20 peer reviewed articles in the areas of supervision, clinical practice and management and received a Creswick Fellowship in 2012 to study attachment theory and group supervision models at the Tavistock and Portman Clinic in London. Carolyn provides individual and group supervision to professionals in a range of fields and, is an article reviewer for a number of UK journals and provides training around topics such as Vicarious Trauma and Resilience, Leadership and Management, as well as Emotional Intelligence for a range of government and non-government organisations.

In this episode I speak with Rebecca, who has 25 years of social work experience in child protection, legal aid and more recently in private practice. Rebecca has extensive skills in risk assessments and complex case management for young people, and has worked also for the physical abuse and neglect of children counselling service. The majority of her career has been as a criminal consultant for legal aid, and supporting high risk young offenders. More recently Rebecca has moved into part-time private practice, where she continues to specialise in family group conferencing.

In this episode I speak with Jazmin, who came to social work after completing diplomas in community service and community development and is passionate about working with children and adolescents with co-occurring disability and mental health issues. In this episode I speak with Richa, who came to Australia as an International Student in 2017 and completed a Masters of Social Work (Qualifying) from Western Sydney University in 2019. After completing her final social work placement, Richa began working at Settlement Services International as a Community Hub leader. She moved into the NSW Department of Education as a Community Liaison Officer in Westmead Public School, working with newly arrived culturally and linguistically diverse families to adjust to a new country through a wide range of programs. She provides casual tutoring at Western Sydney University and supervises social work students during their placements as well. Currently Richa works at Feros Care as a Community Development Coordinator leading community capacity building projects in partnership with local stakeholders, NDIS, and people with disabilities.

Haylee has spent most of her career working with survivors of sexual assault for both NSW Health and a non-government organisation. Tony has worked in generalist and gambling rehabilitation counselling services, was a founding member of the Confronting Violence and Abuse Group which provided a team of group facilitators to work with men who have been violent and abusive. Tony also worked as a facilitator with the Northern Violence and Intervention Program, has presented the “What to do about anger” program at Relationships Australia, and has written many programs including, Moving On from Separation and Divorce, Step-parenting, Raising Boys, How to Handle Anxiety and Stress, the Game Perspective, Workplace Bullying. He has had an article published in the AASW Social Work Journal entitled, “The Reverse Role Play – An innovative way to work with violent men”.

In this episode, I speak with Scarlett, who started her career in the drug and alcohol field before moving into acute hospital work. She currently works in the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department of a busy Sydney hospital. Scarlett has previously worked as the General Manager of two homelessness/drug and alcohol NGOs in Sydney and in the juvenile justice field. She is a child protection trainer and has experience in and a passion for disaster work.

In this episode I speak with Lauren who has had over 10 years experience in social work with a diverse career history, including working in remote Aboriginal communities, and in one of Australia's largest children's hospitals. Currently she practices as a school counsellor in Western Sydney. Lauren has a lifelong interest in social justice and advocacy which has led her to an interesting personal and professional life.

In this episode, I speak with Stephanie who has worked as a clinical social worker in both the homelessness and drug and alcohol sectors over the last 10 years. During this period she has developed a strong interest in challenging systemic and structural barriers, identifying solutions, and championing diversity. She completed a Masters of Public and Social Policy in 2020 and currently holds the role of Homelessness Health Program Manager for South Eastern Sydney Local Health District.

In this episode, I speak with Ben, a Ph.D. candidate at Western Sydney University with a social work practice background in community mental health, group work with men and boys, and community development (with the Penrith Panthers Rugby League Club). He is the founder of two social work-focused podcasts (Social Work Stories and Social Work Discoveries), and has been tutoring across various social work subjects for the Masters and Bachelors of Social Work at WSU since 2017. He has just submitted his Ph.D. which investigates the complexities of relationships between men and boys in a dynamic group mentoring program at the Penrith Panthers called Building Young Men. Ben is embedded in the Building Young Men project as a mentor, researcher, and program developer, which he loves.

In this episode, I speak with Lachlan, an early career Social Worker whose final placement saw him working in a youth drug and alcohol NGO providing specialist homelessness services. This piqued Lachlan's interest in the social complexities of this client group and saw him working as a new grad Social Worker in an Opiate Treatment Program based in the inner city, where he has found a passion for domestic violence, mental health, institutionalisation, and homelessness.

In this episode, I speak with Eileen, a Senior Social Worker who started her career in child protection before transferring to health. She worked for 10 years in the spinal and rehabilitation field across acute, subacute and community areas and was a Social Work Team Leader at Royal North Shore Hospital Cancer Services Team working in medical oncology. Currently, she works as a Case Manager at The National Centre for Veterans’ Healthcare, an outpatient clinic at Concord Hospital.

In this episode I speak with Madison, currently undertaking her third year of a Bachelor of Social Work at The University of Sydney. In this episode I speak with Shiri, a Clinical Social Worker and Art Therapist. She has spent over 25 years working with children and adults who have experienced trauma, and mental health professionals who work with them. Her work spans private practice, public facilitation and research. Throughout her work, Shiri has found that art is a wonderful tool in which children (and adults) can communicate a vast variety of feelings in a non-threatening way. In addition to individual therapy and running therapeutic groups for women and children, Shiri has spent the last few years refining a model for preschools, using creative groups.

In this episode I speak with Lucia, a social worker and rehab case manager, specialising in acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury, and mental health. Lucia worked for many years in the disability and social services in England and Spain before arriving in Australia in 2012 and commencing work as a Case Manager. She provides a person-centred approach to assist individuals to achieve their goals, and enable them to live independently in the community whilst adjusting to their new circumstances.

In this episode I speak with Jon, whose life has been dedicated to living and serving amongst Australia’s most disadvantaged. His work has seen him sharing his home with people seeking asylum, refugees, people in recovery, and ex-prisoners. Born in Malaysia and migrating to Australia in the 1970s, Jon’s life is testament to the power of hospitality. Jon heads up Wayside Chapel and continues Wayside’s mission of creating community with no “us and them”.

In this episode I speak with Gabriela, a student in her final year of Social Work at the Australian Catholic University. Originally from Brazil, she has lived in Italy and London, and has been involved in charitable work from an early age. During her degree she has had the opportunity to work within a number of different organisations advocating for various social issues, including child protection, refugees, international students and the Brazilian community in Australia. In this episode I have two guests joining me for the first time. I speak with Robina and Belinda about their work in the Disability and Sexual Violence Team at the NSW Health Education Centre Against Violence. This portfolio funding has come out of the Royal Commission into responses to abuse in institutionalised settings to improve responses to people with disability who have experienced sexual violence, as well as for children and young people who are using problematic and harmful sexualised behaviours. They have both had incredible careers demonstrating an ongoing commitment to furthering an intersectional understanding of structural and interpersonal forms of violence and inequalities while trying to cultivate reflective, trauma-informed and socially just responses in direct practice and advocacy. They believe providing education and training is a crucial part of social work practice, as well as social work clinicians being involved in lobbying for structural change.

In this episode I speak with Lara, whose interest in Social Work began with volunteering for the Dublin AIDS Helpline in 1990, working with non-Government organisations in an administration role, training in welfare in the late '90s and commencing as a case manager for a women's refuge. In this episode I speak with Vanessa, who works for The Blue Knot Foundation’s National Counselling & Referral Service supporting The Disability Royal Commission & COVID19 Disability Information Support Line. Vanessa has practised as a social worker in the disability, employment, aged care and organisational psychology fields, as well as for Centrelink offices in Darwin and Alice Springs, which serve a largely Indigenous population. In this episode I speak with Ashton, an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, Supervisor, Trainer, Consultant and Private Practice Owner, having completed both a Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Criminology and Criminal Justice degrees. She has many years of experience working with children and families and is passionate about working with people who have experienced trauma, collaborating with each client to create a safe and positive therapeutic experience. Ashton is also a clinical supervisor and leadership coach who uses a trauma-informed approach to support supervisees and leaders in their roles as well as helping them to achieve their career goals.

In this episode I speak with Alexis Stonebridge, NSW/ACT Manager of Social Work Services at Slater and Gordon Lawyers, with previous experience in the fields of out of home care, homelessness, drug and alcohol, family counselling and mediation. Slater and Gordon was the first private law firm in Australia to employ social workers to provide free clinical support to its legal clients. In this role for the past 9 years, Alexis provides telephone-based counselling, case work and referral to significantly injured and ill clients, as well as coordinating Slater and Gordon’s AASW endorsed Legal Education Program for Social Workers in NSW and the ACT, and is co-editor of the ‘Social Work and the Law’ e-newsletter.

In this episode, Maegan and I discuss her work as a perinatal social worker providing services to pregnant women receiving care through a general obstetrics clinic and a hospital Women and Newborn Drug and Alcohol Service. Maegan enrolled in a PhD at UWA in 2020 where she will use qualitative methods to conceptualise the phenomenon of hospital-based infant removals by child protection grounded in the perspectives of the practitioners involved. She has a strong interest in research which focuses on interdisciplinary knowing and practice that can be applied to improving outcomes for vulnerable and marginalised consumers of maternity health services.

She has published widely on the topic of hope and ambiguous loss for families of missing people and has taught in the disability space, with a research interest in missing persons, mental health and disability. Sarah also teaches undergraduate and post-graduate Social Work university students, focusing on social justice, human rights and cross-cultural social work. She has studied and worked both domestically and internationally, and has a particular interest in the intersection between social work, mental health, and forced migration. Sarah won the "Caseworker of the Year" award within the Australian Migrant and Settlement Awards in 2014 and was also selected as a Top Three Finalist in the area of Migration for the European Development Days Future Leaders Program in 2015.

In this episode, Rosanna and I discuss her work experience in the disability, health and welfare sectors with a strong commitment in human rights, and current position as a Coordinator at Lifetime Care and Support at icare. She has worked in a number of agencies providing either direct client work (for Royal Rehabilitation Centre Sydney), adult guardianship (for the Office of the Public Guardian), disability-related advice (for the NSW Trustee and Guardian), and as a branch manager (for the NSW Home Care Service).
Rosanna enjoys working closely with people with a disability who have high support needs and their families, allied health and medical professionals, government and non-government organisations, legal professionals, peak organisations and service providers.

In this episode, Barbara and I discuss her work initially as a high school music appreciation teacher and managing a second-hand bookshop, further strengthened her resolve to pursue a Social Work degree at UNSW. In the course of 15 years as a hospital Social Worker, she was an integral part of a respiratory ward team and worked in a psychiatric unit, before working as the sole Social Worker in an inner-city private hospital.

In this episode, Chad and I discuss his background in forensic social work, how his strong value base and overcoming Stage IV cancer have led him to develop his own practice to support cancer survivors and those experiencing mental illness and addiction and founding a tech company with a mobile application assisting patients with scheduling, encouraging self-care and reflection and to legitimise medical cannabis as part of a holistic approach to their healthcare.

In this episode, Dana and I discuss her experience working both in Australia and the USA in a variety of settings, but particularly her strong interest in rehabilitation medicine. We discuss her passion for supporting adjustment to disability and finding that new ‘normal’ with clients. In this episode, Damien and I talk about the importance of reflection in Social Work practice and his experience leading a multifunctional team to support people severely injured in motor vehicle accidents. We discuss clinical supervision and reflective practice and resources he draws on in the course of his work. We also touch on the positive moves within some government departments to bring new life, experience and enthusiasm to our roles and organisation culture, and how this can support him to develop creative solutions to address barriers for people with a disability.

Hi and welcome to Social Work Spotlight, a podcast created to showcase the wonderful and valuable work being done by Social Workers in Sydney, Australia.
I’m your host, Yasmine McKee-Wright, and each episode I will interview a local social worker to showcase diverse areas of the profession and what kinds of fields we specialise in. We will touch a little on social work education and foundations, although this podcast is aimed at non social workers who may just be interested in what we do, or for those who might be looking for a career change.
This is Episode 0 - the podcast introduction, with the first episode scheduled for release on April 18 2020. For each episode I will post a transcript as well as links and show notes in this description section, for you to continue reading on a particular topic if you wish.
My first three guests are at different stages in their careers, and come from diverse areas of motor vehicle accidents, traumatic brain injury rehabilitation, and inpatient hospital work and education.
