As a podcast that started talking about the Third Horizon in Coriolis, new GMs often ask us “where do I start?” But Coriolis is the youngest setting in this discussion. Runequest’s Glorantha, by contrast, is over four decades old. So we have brought together experts in four much loved settings, to talk about how to break down any barriers and start having fun.

Recorded at UKGE Virtually Expo 2020, the panel is chaired by co-host Matthew and features:

B. Dave Walters is a revolutionary content creator and storyteller. Known for playing Victor Temple on Vampire the Masquerade: LA by Night, he is the writer of Dungeons & Dragons: A Darkened Wish for IDW comics.

Jeff Richard is Vice President and Creative Director for Chaosium. He is the lead author of the Guide to Glorantha, HeroQuest Glorantha, and RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha, as well as numerous other supplements and articles. Jeff has been the creative director and editor-in-chief of all things Glorantha since 2008.

Mattias Johnsson Haake, director of two of Free League’s settings: Symbaroum’s Davokar and Coriolis’ Third Horizon

Anjuli Smith, by day marketeer for Aconyte’s range of game-related novels, by night the streamer known only as GeekGirlBookworm

There a a couple of strange moments, the first when B.Dave mouths a silent denial and then confirmation about the existence of the supernatural. Then, at the end only B.Dave appears to plug anything. The others got their chance too, but plugged what as going on at UKGE which is long gone now.

Its been a whole year since we last heard from our prisoners, Salem, Salah and Yaphet, on the mysterious prison planet. So, we start off this episode reminding ourselves what happened back then as much for our benefit as for our listeners. Then the first half of this episode consists of the last half hour of the previous session last year, which wasn't included in the 'cast, then we move on to with the first half hour of the latest session. There is lots of in character discussion in the episode, with perhaps just one dice roll...

If you want to go back and listen to the original recordings of the last session, you will find them here.

Its a bit like the finals of Strictly Come Dancing (Dancing with the Stars in the US), but with fewer professional dancers, and considerably less Paso Doble.

Hmmm I wonder if they could so a Paso Doble on their Hollywood special episode, but a woman as Ripley and the guy in a Xeno suit?

Listen in horror as Tony ... ugh ... “Ovomorphs” someone, turning them into an egg with a facehugger inside. Which is surely kind of, you know ... having sex with a paralysed body? I only turned it into an MP3, and I have this uncomfortable taste in my mouth. Where’s that Monte Cooke consent book when you need it? The last part of this game plays out until:

00:55:50 When Dave and the players discuss the obscenity they have wrought. Personally I think we should never speak of it again.

With their band of hired muscle at their backs, Gormer sneaks into the Rust Brother Toll station to reconnoiter.

Lets be honest here - combat does not make the most thrilling listening, even if at the table, its exciting for the players (and sometimes it isn't even exciting for them), but with Forbidden Lands the combat is, at least, short.

Then comes divvying the loot - such as it is.

We might have edited the action, maybe added some sound effects, but it has always been our philosophy to present the game as played, to reveal the pauses while we look up rules, and decisions we make, as players and GM, as well as characters. We don't want to be Critical Role - we are sharing our home games, inviting you as listener to sit with us round the table.

Our friends meet the sexless and hairless Elf, Mergolene, who recites a poem which (they claim) will allow access to the Fortress where the Ruby is currently kept. Reminded of their mission, the friends never-the-less decide to complete it only after they have taught the Rust Brothers of the Toll Boom a lesson. They recruit Vincent's band of soldiers.

Dangerous journeys! Epic battles! Fearsome monsters! NONE of these feature in this episode, as our heroes turn a gryphon's roost into a home.

No, we don't make you endure the cleaning out of gryphon sh-... manure, but you will THRILL as they argue about money! SMILE as they decide upon a name for their stonghold! TREMBLE as they risk a blister, chopping wood! be INSPIRED, as they build a boat! COWER in fear as they give somebody called Vincent a Hard Stare!

Dave and Matthew are sitting down even as this goes live to start running taster sessions of the Alien RPG on the Free League stand at UK Games Expo. Not everyone who wants to at UKGE will be able to play, and of course most of our listeners probably can't get to Birmingham, so here is a special gift.

In preparation for the taster sessions Dave and I ran Alien for our home groups. I ran Chariot of the Gods and didn't record that (spoilers), but Dave ran a couple of the sessions that we are going to be running at UKGE. Its only on a single omni-mic and in a pub, but I have cleaned up the audio and it sounds pretty good. Listen to this and it will be just like* being there!

Isembold, Gormer and Tengrail search the bodies of the slavers they defeated for some meagre pickings, then continue their journey. They get caught in the rain, and seeing a Gryphon about to attack, seek shelter in a ruined tower. They meet the Roka Orcs that they had been trying to avoid there, and realise that the tower is actually the Gryphon's nest.
