Two Southall school children have visited the West Side Radio studios to professionally record a radio commercial promoting energy efficiency after winning a regional competition.
Redrow Homes invited schoolchildren across West London to create a 60 second audio commercial to explain to other young people how important energy saving measures are in the home and raise awareness of how new homes are built with energy efficiency in mind.
The Southall primary school won a public vote via Redrow’s social media channel against one other shortlisted school, chosen from a total of 45 commercials entered.

One of the year 5 winners said: “We took a taxi to Westside Radio Station. As soon as we arrived, the station manager escorted us into studio one where we were interviewed live on air. It was so exciting for us. After the interview we then recorded our Redrow commercial professionally. After we completed recording our commercial, we took a taxi back to school just in time for our hockey and dodgeball practice!”
Year 5 learning mentor Fidel Channer added: “The visit to West Side Radio has been a great media outlook for the pupils at the school.

“This has been a phenomenal opportunity and learning experience for our pupils. As individuals we live and breathe creativity. It’s up to us as adults to embrace and channel that concept, talent or gift and distribute it among the younger generation. I thought this would be a great opportunity for our students to challenge their inner journalistic prowess and get a head start in the media world and learn how a small part of it works behind the scenes.”
Nicola Johansen, sustainability manager at Redrow Homes, said, “We’d like to congratulate the winning pupils on their well-deserved win and we’re delighted with the final commercial. This is the second time we have run such a competition with schools and it’s wonderful to hear from the younger generation about how they value their environment and saving energy in the home."

“Our aim was to raise awareness of how energy efficient new homes can be, helping reduce carbon emissions and our customer’s energy bills. It was a great opportunity to engage pupils on this important subject.”
Redrow has over 120 developments across the UK and several in North West London, including plans for 2,900 new homes in Colindale as part of a £1bn housing scheme with a primary school, shops and restaurants on the former Peel Centre site.
Redrow is one of the UK’s leading housebuilders and aims to be one of the most sustainable and socially responsible construction businesses by 2018. In 2015 the company’s developments continued to reduce their impact upon the environment, with carbon emissions down and more recycling facilities included. Brownfield sites accounted for 57% of developments and 95% were within 500m of a public transport node. For more information on the ‘UCreate’ Energy Efficiency Schools Project visit
