The Strong by Lee podcast is hosted by David Lee, personal trainer and Registered Dietitian based in White Plains, NY. In this podcast, he will discuss things related to fitness, nutrition, mindset, and accountability to help you look, move, and feel better.

His goal is to help people who struggled like he did: low self-confidence and a poor self-image. As a result, his physical, mental, and emotional health suffered.

Since 'discovering' fitness and working on himself since 2009, he has been able to see and experience the beneficial effects of a sound and effective fitness program. Thus, he became certified as a personal trainer in 2011 and as a licensed dietitian from New York University in 2015. Since 2011, he has helped hundreds of people improve their lives for the better so they can live more confidently and strong.

In this episode, David further discusses the importance and utility of discipline. He addresses a couple of common misconceptions about discipline and a better way we should approach discipline.

A lot of people believe discipline is about punishing yourself or forcing yourself to do something that you don't want to do. While there are some truths to those concepts, there are others, and by ignoring the others, people invariably set themselves up for unnecessary suffering and mental anguish.

"Why aren't I seeing better weight loss results?"

A common question that at the heart can be approached from two main angles, non-compliance and adaptive thermogenesis.

We revisit these two again as a reminder that it's usually one, or both, of these processes that hinder progress.

After all, we have to keep hitting the nail on the head if we want to see progress.

Ah, motivation. We all need it. Many of us don't have enough of it.

If you've listened to my content in the past, you'll know I'm not a huge fan of 'motivation'. At least the way it's conventionally and modernly defined.

"Oh, I need more motivation."
"If I just had more motivation, I'd be able to get off my ass to go work out."
"I'm not motivated to do anything because the weather sucks."
"I hate our President - I think I'm going to stress eat."

In today's segment, I discuss for about 20 minutes my thoughts on 'motivation' and why I believe it's a mistake to rely on it.

Is my answer to the Motivational Problem included? Maybe, maybe not. My goal is not to solve your motivation woes. My goal is to help you develop the mental fortitude and discipline (ability to learn rather than punish) so you can make better decisions in your health and fitness journey, and NOT feel like crap.

Many people are 'resistant' to resistance training, and for good reasons. Firstly, it's uncomfortable. Secondly, there's a learning curve. Thirdly, it's uncomfortable.

Do you really need it? Yes. David makes the argument that to be as healthy as possible, you have to be strong. There's no better way to get strong than to resistance train.

Not all fitness programs are created equal and provide equal results. While any fitness program is better than none, some are better than others, not because of some cool exercises (though this can be important to some), but the way progress is structured and designed.

Programs that throw a bunch of exercises together like a kitchen sink can produce lackluster results and waste your time. In this discussion, we go over the four key factors that all effective training programs will have.

In this 9 minute audio discussion, David explores the concept of simplicity as it relates to training. How simple should your program be? How often should you switch things up?

Variety can be a great way to spur new progress, and for optimal results, it should be used strategically. Many people use variety for variety sake. David believes this is fine... As long as lack of motivation and progress are related to lack of variety. However, David explores the idea that if you want to see optimal results, variety may actually be a hindrance.

For general fitness people, variety can help them stay motivated, and depending on their fitness levels, progressing. However, as one increases in fitness levels, a return back to simplicity may be warranted depending on desire goals.
