In this episode of the HR in Review podcast, we take a pulse of the current labour market and try to predict what the UK and EU economies can expect in the year ahead.

Guest: Julius Probst
Bill Banham's guest is Julius Probst, PhD, European Labor Economist at Appcast, and speaker at DisruptHR Cambridge on Oct 24.

Julius was born in Germany but has mostly studied abroad. He did his High School in France and his Bachelors in the Netherlands. He graduated with a Masters in economics and a PhD in economic history from Lund University in Sweden. During the final year of his PhD, Julius worked for half a year for the European Central Bank.

After graduation, he worked for Macrobond Financial for three years, a macroeconomic and financial data provider. Since January 2020, Julius has worked as Appcast’s European labo(u)r economist. In that role, he is a regular contributor at https://recruitonomics.com/ where he writes about the UK’s and Europe’s labor market and economic outlooks.

Questions for Julius include:

  • How is the UK economy doing right now? There were a lot of recession calls last year, why haven’t they happened yet?
  • How is the labour market doing currently compared to last year? What is happening to vacancies? Why is the unemployment rate so low even if there is zero growth?
  • The falling number of job vacancies in UK: How many jobs has AI replaced?
  • Unlike the falling populations of Japan and Germany, the UK population will rise from 67 million in 2020 to 74 million by 2060. How has Brexit affected the labour market and the economy? Is the record net migration the U.K. had last year compensating for missing workers? Why not?
  • What are the key structural problems that are holding back the U.K. economy?
  • What is the outlook for the rest of the year and 2024? Is the Bank of England risking a recession?
  • If you could pass on one crucial lesson you have learned in your career - in one minute or less - what would be your top tip for HR professionals and leaders?
  • What is the single biggest change you think will happen in HR and leadership over the next 5-10 years?

It's also one of the most common reasons people seek coaching, as people look for support in building their stress tolerance. But is there a point at which resilience can become toxic? I explore this in a new article for HR magazine." Tell us more about how resilience can become toxic.
  • In a post on the Hult EF blog, you discuss suggest there's a lack of clarity as to what makes for exceptional coaching. You go on to offer some key metrics to ensure one chooses a coach or coaching team that will make a genuine difference to their performance. Can you share some of these measures with us?
  • You're speaking at DisruptHR London on Sept 25. Your session is called 'Unleash Your Talent Through Coaching'. Tell us about the talk and what attendees can expect to learn.

Guest: Scott Lane

Compliance is a critical function of the HR department. HR is tasked with making sure that hiring practices, workplace rules, treatment of employees, and a variety of other factors all comply with the relevant laws.

Bill Banham's guest this time is Scott Lane, Founder and CEO of Speeki, a group focused on transforming compliance hotlines and other compliance areas using AI technologies.

Speeki is also a player in compliance certifications and compliance auditing and one of the few bodies accredited by ISO for certifications under the ISO 37001 Anti-Bribery Standard.

Questions For Scott Include:

  • Your focus is on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives, can you talk us through the landscape of ESG and what it means to the layperson?
  • How can we begin to build companies and workforces rich in integrity and with a common set of shared values?
  • How can leaders get employee buy-in for ESG initiatives?
  • Last year, Speeki surveyed global compliance officers to assess what their thoughts were on the ‘value’ of compliance to a business. The survey found that only around 20% of participants effectively map against business goals, with the remaining 80% attempting to align their goals with the business but doing so poorly. What can happen to performance when goals are not mapped against the business correctly or even at all?
  • How can companies build an ecosystem where people feel comfortable raising issues without fear of retaliation?
  • What are some of your top tips for using a compliance reporting platform to drive value?

Guest: Roger Thorpe

Bill Banham is joined on the show by Roger Thorpe, President at Toronto-based integrated benefits and wellness consulting company, Thorpe Benefits and Host of the Benefits and Wellness Superhero Podcast.

More About Roger
As a 25-year specialist in employee benefits consulting and the owner of Thorpe Benefits, Roger helps HR and Finance professionals measure the success of their benefits plan on factors that go way beyond rates and renewals.

Roger takes his business seriously because his name is on its door and he believes it is important to “own client relationships” directly, which is why he is actively involved in Thorpe Benefits’ day-to-day operation. He also believes that energy and effort are the differentiators in life and business. In addition to a love for employee benefits, he has a passion for the study of health and high performance. His ultimate test is whether he can put in a ten-hour day and still have energy left over. He is still – and will forever be – “in training“.

Questions For Roger Include:

  • What benefits trends are you talking about with your clients right now? What are clients struggling with and what are some of the solutions?
  • What kind of expectations do most HR people have in dealing with a group benefits broker or consultant? What services and products do they expect to get?
  • How often do HR Directors evaluate their benefits programs? If they wanted to – how might they do that to determine if it is as effective as it can be? Do you agree with this approach?
  • The term ROI is used a lot in terms of evaluating the benefits of a company’s group benefits plan. How do most people define this? Why do you define it differently?
  • If you could pass on one crucial lesson you have learned in your career - in one minute or less - what would be your top tip for HR professionals?
  • What is the single biggest change you think will happen in HR over the next 5-10 years?

Guest: Torin Ellis, Principal at The Torin Ellis Brand

Many leaders today talk the talk when it comes to making a concerted and collective effort to improve DEI efforts throughout the employee lifecycle - from sourcing and hiring all the way through to succession planning and change management efforts.

But how much has really changed in the past two years? How much time and money is actually being allocated to improving inclusivity and empathy in the workplace? Are we really any closer to equitable hiring practices and a more inclusive world of work?

In this HR in Review episode, host Bill Banham talks with Torin Ellis, Principal at The Torin Ellis Brand.

Torin is a Human Capital Strategist, focused on the art of recruiting diverse talent using various creative methods.

Torin will also be a speaker at DisruptHR London at the Royal Institution in Mayfair on July 6th.

Key Topics

  • How has diversity played a critical role in your career?
  • You and I recorded an interview for the HRchat podcast back in July 2020 - about six weeks after the murder of George Floyd. What's changed since then? Both in wider society and in the ways we recruit?
  • Why do you believe leaders in the US and elsewhere are not delivering on DEI commitments and investments?
  • Any tips to help candidates stand out when looking for a job? How can candidates push recruiters to work harder for them?
  • What about employers? During this Great Resignation, what can recruiters do to help companies project their employer brand in the right places and attract high-quality talent?
  • Now let's chat about your session at DisruptHR London. Take a couple of minutes and offer a preview of what to expect.

Guest: Philippa Bonay, Director of People and Business Services at the Office for National Statistics

Philippa has extensive international corporate experience across the whole HR remit in both the private and public sectors. As People & Business Services Director for the ONS (5,500 people), she is responsible for human resources, estates, facilities management, H&S, business services and the customer contact centre.

In addition, Philippa is the HR Director for the Government Analysis Function (17,000 people) and the Government Statistical Service, and a member of the Civil Service HR FunctionBoard. She extends her work and research voluntarily to charities and global organisations notably focused on teamworking, leadership, values and behaviours. She is co-founder of a global thought leadership club that includes virtual conferences and a podcast series where she interviews a range of fascinating global senior execs who stand out in their fields.

Philippa is also a Fellow of the CIPD, one of UK 50 Leading Lights in Kindness & Leadership, HR Magazine’s most influential practitioners and 40 People leaders in the UK building workplaces of tomorrow in 2022.

Key TopicsThe podcast disussed the following questions:

  • As an HR pro, what are you most passionate about?
  • To help build an inclusive culture, the ONS offers sponsorships, mentoring and championing, and everybody within the organisation has an inclusion and diversity objective. How has mentoring / coaching made a difference in your life and career?
  • You are a big proponent of being kind and respectful to one another. How have the collective lessons in empathy over the past couple of years changed the ways leaders communicate with employees?
  • Like most organisations, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) still has work to do when it comes to diversity in leadership. In a recent post on govx.digital, you shared your take on using data to identify barriers. You said that although the department has good levels of disability and LGBTQ+ representation among the most senior positions, improvement is still needed for women and ethnic minorities. To improve this situation, your team has recently launched an inclusion, culture and wellbeing app that gives all ONS directorates the ability to look at all of their information by a protected characteristic across the employee lifecycle. Tell me about the app and how this helps leaders to identify where the problems are and set objectives against them.
  • Levelling up: What can be achieved through local talent recruitment and how does hiring locally mesh with the shift we've seen over the past couple of years in the private sector towards hybrid work and embracing wider, more disparate talent pools?
  • You are also HR Director for the Government Analysis Function. Talk about that role and how it has contributed to your knowledge and skills as an HR leader.
  • What is the single biggest change you think will happen in HR over the next 5-10 years?
  • If you could pass on one crucial lesson you have learned in your HR carrier - in one minute or less - what would be your top tip for other HR professionals?
