The United States has experienced unprecedented destruction of reproductive rights in recent years. Perhaps the most jarring example, in 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which guaranteed a constitutional right to abortion. And while not currently restricted like abortion, though it is often conflated with it, many barriers still block access to emergency contraception, or the morning-after pill.

In this episode, Amanda Johnson Morrison, co-founder and president of Julie, a new reproductive health company, explains what so many people get wrong about emergency contraception and why it's so important that the morning-after pill is accessible to everyone who needs it.

Even though our lives don’t magically reset when the clock strikes midnight on January 1st, there’s no doubt that entering a new year gives us a newfound sense of possibility–which can make us resolution-happy. The problem is, when we put too much pressure on ourselves with a lengthy list of “shoulds,” we often end up feeling even worse. That’s why Well+Good’s 2022 ReNew Year Program is focused on refreshing and resetting our habits–not reinventing them. What if we didn’t need to change anything about ourselves to feel our best? In this episode, we sat down with a positive psychiatrist and a joy expert to answer: How can we infuse more joy in our lives this year instead of stressing about resolutions?

HOST:

Ella Dove, Director, Creative Development at Well+Good

GUESTS:

Dr. Samantha Boardman, Positive Psychiatrist, Author of “Everyday Vitality,” Founder of the “Positive Prescription” Blog

Ingrid Fetell Lee, Designer, Author of “Joyful,” and Founder of “The Aesthetics of Joy” Blog

WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT:

Dr. Samantha instructs us to be ‘deliberate about delight,’ and breaks down the best method for blocking out the ‘pings and dings’ around us. Check her out here and Positive Prescription here.

Ingrid explains that the way we’ve been thinking about joy is all wrong–but good news, making one quick mental adjustment can help us to find more of it in our day to day lives. Find her here and check out The Aesthetics of Joy here.

At Well+Good, we know that New Year's Resolutions aren’t always all they’re cracked up to be, but we also know that the start of a new year is still a great time to hit refresh. That’s why we’ve tapped industry experts to help us create our annual ReNew Year Program: a four-week plan to help you along your way to living well in 2022. The best part about our ReNew Year plan? It’s completely optional, because the pressure many of us feel to reinvent ourselves on January 1 is no joke. In today’s episode, we’re pulling the curtain back on the #1 offender when it comes to resolution-related stress: diet culture. How can we say yes to feeling better and no to cleanses, detoxes, and restrictive eating in 2022?

Throw a stone at a wellness expert and they’ll tell you that mindfulness and stress reduction are the keys to living a long and healthy life. Additionally, last year the American Psychological Association reported that 2 in 3 adults described feeling significant stress over the course of the pandemic; a statistic that doesn’t seem to be decreasing any time soon. Despite chronic stress not being taken as seriously as other conditions by some medical practitioners, we are learning more and more how stress impacts the body in a very real way, and no, it’s not “all in your head.” While no one is certain what the next year will look like, one thing is absolutely certain: we need to calm down… but how do we do it?

If asked to DTR with social media, many of us would answer: it’s complicated. When Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp went down on October 4, 2021, it became impossible to ignore how complicated that relationship really is. As we head into the final months of 2021, one thing is abundantly clear: it’s okay to say that we’re not okay. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five adults in the U.S. live with a mental illness; a situation that’s only been made worse by the pandemic. With more people than ever standing up for their mental health and seeking out therapy for the first time, another crack in the system has been revealed–there aren’t enough therapists to match the demand. Enter: the rise of digital talkspaces. While these spaces help to make therapy more affordable and accessible, are we missing out on the benefits of talking to someone in-person? In a world where almost everything else we do is online, what does the future of therapy look like?

HOST: Kate Spies, SVP+General Manager at Well+Good

GUESTS:

Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, Licensed Psychologist, Founder & CEO of Therapy for Black Girls

Dr. Amy Cirbus, Ph.D, LMHC, LPC, Director of Clinical Content at Talkspace

Dr. Amy explains how the flexibility of online therapy can have a positive impact on our overall mental health. Plus, she shares her thoughts on what a hybrid model for therapy could look like. Check out Talkspace here.

When it comes to seeking out fitness information online, there is certainly no shortage of content. It seems that everywhere you look, there are posts promising that “burning,” “toning,” and “shredding” any body part of choice is just a double tap away. While the goal of many ‘fit-fluencers’ is to get people moving, how do we separate what works vs. what sells? Oftentimes, it’s easy to be reeled in by swipe-ups and sweat sets in favor of certifications and qualifications. When it comes to seeking out the best fitness advice for our individual lifestyles and goals, where do we draw the line between expert and influencer?

HOST: Ella Dove, Director, Creative Development at Well+Good

Charlee Atkins, Founder and CEO of Le Sweat, former Soul Cycle Master Instructor

Simone de la Rue, Health and Life Coach, Celebrity Trainer, Creator of Body by Simone

Dr. Rick Richey, Educator for The National Academy for Sports Medicine (NASM), Doctor of Health Science, Masters of Exercise Science

WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT:

Charlee breaks down where the terms “burn,” “tone,” and “lengthen” come from, and how we can learn to make smarter consumer choices when it comes to finding workouts online. Follow Charlee here and check out Le Sweat here.

Simone shares her thoughts on the rise of the ‘fit-fluencer’ as a lifelong fitness professional who has devoted her life and career to getting people moving. Check her out here and Body By Simone here.

Dr. Rick reveals the two things you should be looking out for to determine if an online fitness program is a good fit for you. Find him here and check out NASM here.

After over a year of much of the workforce operating remotely, we are entering a period of time that many experts are calling “The Great Resignation.” According to The US Labor Department, nearly four million people have quit their jobs... some with back-up plans and others without. For many workers, the future is still uncertain: some companies have opted for permanent hybrid models while others continue to push back the return-to-office date month after month. Regardless of their profession, more and more workers are taking stock: Is it possible to finally kick burnout to the curb? Is a work-life balance actually achievable, or just aspirational? As the pandemic continues to shake things up at a rapid clip, it is time to re-evaluate how and why we work.

HOST: Kate Spies, SVP+General Manager at Well+Good

Dr. Krystal Conner, Life and Career Coach

Megan Hellerer, Career Coach for Underfulfulled Overachievers

These days, we speak very openly about topics that were once considered taboo: who we’re sleeping with, what our therapist said in our last session, but when it comes to money… oftentimes, our lips are sealed. In recent years, getting women invested in their financial futures has been on trend with countless female oriented campaigns and FinTech apps on the scene, but given that women couldn’t legally open a bank account until the 1970’s, the playing field is still far from even. It’s 2021, and many women are still being conditioned to feel shame around their spending, to outsource their finances, and told that if we “just stopped buying lattes” then we’d be just as financially competent as the men in our lives. It's time we take control and shift that narrative: How can we turn money from a source of stress to a source of strength?

HOST: Ella Dove, Director, Creative Development at Well+Good

GUESTS:

Lindsay Bryan-Podvin, Financial Therapist and Social Worker

Sallie Krawcheck, CEO & Co-Founder of Ellevest

Bola Sokunbi, CEO & Founder of Clever Girl Finance

WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT:

Lindsay shares her approach to shame-free financial therapy and breaks down how we can remove the stigma around money to take control of our financial futures. You can find her here

Sallie explains why so many women are conditioned to believe that money is tacky, and what mental shifts are required to see that money is power. You can find her here and check out Ellevest here

No matter how far we think we’ve come in terms of acceptance for all body types, we can’t seem to escape workouts that promise “washboard abs in just 10 minutes flat” or friends and family members lamenting that they “just need to lose 5 pounds before vacation.” While we continue to amplify voices who are advocating for body positivity and sizing inclusivity, suffice to say, there's a lot more work to be done. After supporting us through a global pandemic, we should be thanking our bodies for all that they do to keep us alive and well–not stressing about how they look in shorts. How can we continue to bring awareness to how people with different bodies might exist in the world and move the “body conversation” forward?

HOST: Kate Spies, SVP+ General Manager at Well+Good

GUESTS:

Katie Sturino, Entrepreneur, Founder of Megababe, Author of Body Talk

Jessica Vander Leahy, Model, Writer, Content Creator

WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT:

Katie explains that by making small changes in how we speak and act day-to-day, we can make a big difference when it comes to creating a safe and inclusive space for all body types. Check her out here.

Jessica shares her own experience as a plus-sized model, and how we weren’t born to just “lose weight and pay bills.” You can find her here.

By the numbers: 8 glasses of water, 8 hours of sleep, and of course, the notorious 10,000 steps are all ways we quantify what it means to live a long and healthy life. While it’s no secret that hydration, rest, and movement are all key players when it comes to improving our overall sense of well-being and boosting longevity, the prescription for living well is not a one-size-fits-all. When it comes to building healthier habits that last, which expert-backed numbers do we actually need to strive for? How do we use tracking devices to improve our lives without getting too hung up on the stats?

HOST: Ella Dove, Director, Creative Development at Well+Good

Dr. Amanda Paluch, Assistant Professor of Kinesiology at University of Massachusetts Amherst

Dr. Brendon Stubbs, Senior Lecturer at King's College, Exercise and Mental Health Researcher

While millennials were already living at home in record numbers pre-pandemic, an unprecedented number of young people left their independent lives behind to move back into their childhood bedrooms in March of 2020. Many of these homecomings provided parents and children alike with a sense of safety and comfort, but–as always when it comes to family–there were new challenges to face: How do you slip back into the parent-child dynamic without regressing emotionally? Is there a way for both parents and children to re-establish boundaries? How do you know when it’s time to leave the nest again? Most importantly, with the cost of rent, homeownership, and childcare continuing to increase at an alarming rate, is it time to re-examine our definition of what it means to be an independent adult in 2021 and beyond?

HOST: Taylor Camille, Sr. Producer at Well+Good

GUESTS:

Kayleen Schaefer, Author

Melissa Divaris Thompson, LMFT

WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT:

Kayleen explains what the “5 milestones of adulthood” are according to sociologists from the 1950’s… and how we might need to give those milestones a 2021 revamp. Find her here.

During the height of the pandemic, we cared for our loved ones, for our sourdough starters in the fridge, and of course, for our plants. Being told to stay inside exposed the importance of feeling connected to the world around us, and to nature. Additionally, spending so much time at home increased our desire to curate a space for ourselves that felt nurturing and inviting. For many of us, the solution was simple: bring a piece of the outside in. Whether you’re brand-new to the plant game or have had a ‘green thumb’ your whole life, you know that the relationship between a plant parent and their plant is like no other. Do we take care of our plants or do our plants take care of us?

HOST: Taylor Camille, Sr. Producer at Well+Good

Whether it’s from family, friends, or medical professionals, every woman has heard some iteration of the dreaded phrase, “Well, you’re not getting any younger!” While we can all agree that it’s time to retire that phrase, the pressure to tick certain boxes in a certain order (and by a certain age) is universally felt. How do we juggle career ambitions, personal goals, and biological realities, all while feeling like we’re the ones calling the shots? Why are so many of us being told that we are running out of time?

Since the pandemic started, it seems like the ‘rules to live by’ have changed by the week… sometimes even by the day. In the earlier days, we had to decide whether or not we should join someone in the elevator, or who we should (or shouldn’t) allow into our “pod.” Then, came weighing the pros and cons of indoor vs. outdoor dining and asking ourselves, “how much really is six feet apart?” Now, we’re in uncharted territory as we navigate masks on vs. masks off and of course, vaccine politics. How do we (respectfully) balance the changing social landscape with our own comfort levels? What is the best way to bring up awkward conversation topics that didn’t even exist before 2020 and where are we headed next?

HOST: Ella Dove, Director, Creative Development at Well+Good

GUESTS:

Elaine Swann, Lifestyle and Etiquette Expert, Founder of The Swann School of Protocol

Lauren Guss, Executive Vice President of Business Leadership at Superfly

WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT:

Like most habits, applying sunscreen (or not) is one that starts from a young age. You were either slathered with sunscreen every time you stepped out of the house, or believed that you didn't need it. Either way, for most children, the idea of putting on sunscreen is just as exciting as eating your vegetables. Today, we now know that protecting your skin from the sun should be a daily practice, and is just as pertinent to your overall health as washing your hands or wearing a seatbelt. This shift in the conversation surrounding sun protection can largely be attributed to innovators in the space who are making sun care products more inclusive and attractive–especially when it comes to communities of color. On this episode of The Well+Good Podcast, we are speaking to three of them, who have not only forged their own paths in skin care and sun safety, but who are also expanding the conversation and bridging the information gap that exists on the risks that come with not embracing sunscreen in our everyday routines. Now, consider this your reminder to re-apply.

HOST: Taylor Camille, Sr. Producer at Well+Good

GUESTS:

Shontay Lundy, Founder of Black Girl Sunscreen

Dr. Adeline Kikam, Dermatologist and Founder of Brown Skin Derm

Holly Thaggard, Founder of Supergoop!

WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT:

Shontay shares how her experience as a woman of color informed her relationship with sunscreen as a child and young adult; when she couldn’t find a product that didn’t cast a white tint on her skin, she decided to create her own. Check her out here, and check out Black Girl Sunscreen here.

Dr. Kikam breaks down the technical side of why we all need to take sun protection seriously, and how we can use media and marketing to re-shape perceptions when it comes to making the suncare industry more inclusive. Find her here.

Holly walks us through the story behind Supergoop! and actionable steps we can take to stop the skin cancer epidemic. You can find her here, and Supergoop! here.

When the distribution of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was paused after six people experienced rare blood clots, many drew the parallel to birth control–a medication that can also cause blood clots. The double standard was glaring and left us asking, where is this sense of urgency and concern when it comes to women’s health? While it has always been the case, the events over this past year and a half have exposed the harsh reality that our medical system is not built to support or prioritize women or the non binary community. Thankfully, there are many trailblazers in the field who are fighting for a much-needed priority shift. On this episode of The Well+Good Podcast, we sit down with two of them: Dr. Jessica Shepherd and Dr. Shikha Jain, who break down the changes that need to happen both structurally and in our day-to-day lives in order to move women’s health to the forefront.

HOST: Kate Spies, SVP+ General Manager at Well+Good

Whether we like it or not, most of our face-to-face encounters over the past year and a half have been with our own faces. Let’s admit it, most of the time when we’re on a Zoom or FaceTime call, we’re checking out ourselves and wondering if there’s any way to get better lighting… Even though we spent most of the year au naturel, gearing up to reveal the bottom half of our faces to the world again has dramatically increased the demand for Botox, Invisalign, and other ways to click “touch up my appearance” IRL. So what gives? How do we find the middle ground between accepting ourselves as we are, but also wanting to feel confident as we re-emerge after a year of isolation? As we slowly make our way out of the pandemic, it is time to ‘unmask’ our longest-held beliefs about beauty and skincare, and hopefully, nail down a routine that has us feeling our best–inside and out.

HOST: Kate Spies, SVP+ General Manager at Well+Good

GUESTS:

Jessica Defino, Beauty Reporter

Dr. Carolyn Treasure, Co-Founder of Peachy

Dr. Claudia Aguirre, Neuroscientist and Mind-Body Expert

WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT:

Jessica Defino breaks down the psychology of our skincare habits, and explains her own personal strategy: leave your face the f**k alone. You can find her here

Dr. Carolyn Treasure distinguishes how wrinkle prevention and aging can co-exist on our road to self-acceptance, check out Peachy here

Dr. Claudia Aguirre reminds us of the importance of optimizing your skin health, and how it is anything but surface-level. Find her here

Allow us to re-introduce ourselves. Now that it’s been 7 weeks since we launched the Well+Good podcast, we thought we’d tell you a little bit more about who we are, how we got here, and what drew us into the wellness industry in the first place. We hope that you’ll join us every week for new episodes, so let’s get on a first-name basis, we’re your hosts, Taylor, Ella, and Kate.

Also in this episode, we share some behind-the-scenes audio from our conversation with Elizabeth Kott and Stephanie Simbari. During our chat, they hilariously share their first word association for all 12 astrological signs. Ours were… accurate, maybe yours will be too.

From time to time, we’ll be back with an episode just like this one, a tune up on the conversations that really stuck with us, or the hysterical tangents that just didn’t make it into the final cut. Like what you hear or aggressively disagree with your sign’s telltale word? Shoot us an email at podcasts@wellandgood.com.

Prior to 2020, we’ve been shown one very specific version of self care centered around commodities for our comfort and happiness. In 2021, we’re redefining self care, and after a year that forced us to keep our distance from each other, we’re finding new ways to connect and comfort one another—and discovering that these new communities soothe us too. In this episode, we discuss how to get the most out of this new gen community care and expand our understanding of what it means to heal with the help of both commodities and community.

The amount of morality that’s attached to our diets and eating habits is unreal. Some foods are labelled good, while others are bad. The clean food movement implies that some foods are dirty. And we’ve been told that the way we eat has a huge impact on everything from not just our physical health, but our mental health, our long-term health prospect, and even our immunity. Layer on top of that the prevalence and popularity of highly restrictive diets like Keto, F Factor and Paleo, and it’s actually no wonder that so many people are caught up about food and how we should be eating. How did something that’s supposed to be enjoyable get so confusing, hard and strained?

HOST: Kate Spies, SVP+ General Manager at Well+Good

GUESTS:

Christy Harrison, MPH RD CEDRD, author and host of Food Psych Podcast

Shana Minei Spence, MS, RDN, CDN, a self-labeled “eat anything” dietician

Anna Sweeney, MS, RDN, CEDRD-S, Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietician & Supervisor, Intuitive Eating Counselor
