https://nosweatpublicspeaking.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/How-to-Become-a-Really-Good-Presenter.mp3Effective communication is a valuable skill in both our personal and professional lives.Whether you’re delivering a presentation, engaging in a conversation, or addressing a large audience, the ability to speak confidently and persuasively is a key asset. Becoming a really good speaker is a goal that many aspire to achieve. It’s a skill that can be developed over time with practice and dedication.

Here are tips to help you become a really good speaker and enhance your communication abilities. Know Your Audience: + One of the fundamental principles of effective communication is understanding your audience. Before you speak, take time to research and consider the needs, interests, and expectations of your audience. Customizing your message to your listeners will make it more relevant and engaging. * Organize Your Thoughts: + Good speakers are organized speakers. Structure your speech or presentation in a logical and coherent manner. Start with a clear introduction, followed by the main points, and conclude with a summary or call to action. Use transitions to guide your audience through your content smoothly. * Practice, Practice, Practice: + Practice is key to becoming a good speaker. Rehearse your speech multiple times. Do this in front of a mirror, with a trusted friend, and/or through video recordings. Practice helps you refine your delivery, gain confidence, and identify areas for improvement. + For TEDTalk speakers I’ve coached the rule of thumb for practice is: “One hour of preparation for every minute of presentation.” * Work on Your Voice: + Your voice is your primary tool as a speaker. Pay attention to your tone, pitch, volume, and pace. * Master Nonverbal Communication: + Nonverbal communication, including body language, facial expressions, and gestures, surpasses verbal communication. People believe what they see. + Be mindful your nonverbal cues are in sync with your words and intentions. * Control Nervousness: + Many people feel nervous before speaking in public. Take that nervous energy and put it into your presentation. A presentation without energy is B-o-r-i-n-g. * Use Visual Aids Wisely: + If your presentation involves visual aids, such as slides or props, use them to enhance your message, not distract from it. Keep visuals simple. Use few bullet points because no come to read your presentation. * Engage Your Audience:* + An engaged audience is more likely to remember your message. Encourage interaction through questions, anecdotes, or open-ended statements.

Becoming a really good speaker is a journey that requires dedication and practice. By understanding your audience, organizing your thoughts, practicing, working on your voice and nonverbal communication, controlling nervousness, using visual aids wisely, engaging your audience, you can develop the skills needed to communicate effectively and leave a lasting impact.

Utilize these tips and I guarantee your presentations will be absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT!

http://nosweatpublicspeaking.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/THREE-Things-to-do-in-your-OPENING.mp3That will make a HUGE difference! Those Three Things Are:1. Tell your audience how Questions will be handled. In your Opening tell them when questions will be taken.

Telling your audience from the get-go when you’ll be taking questions lets them know not to interrupt your talk because you told them when you’ll have Q&A.

A question about something in a different section of your presentation can throw off your talk and confuse your audience. You eliminate that by telling when you’ll take questions.

If someone asks a question on material you’ve not yet covered, say, “Do me a favor and write that question down. If I haven’t answered it, when it’s time for questions on that topic, be sure to ask. Thank you!

For longer presentations, take questions after each section, only on that section, and before your Closing.

Important: Take questions Before you Close your presentation.

This is because of the Law of Primacy and Recency. Your audience best remembers the first and last things you say and do.

This is why you want a Strong Opening and a STRONGER Closing.

Example:
“I’m going to discuss the components, parts, and elements of a presentation.
I have time set aside after each section for questions just on that section.
I have time set aside at the end for questions.
Then I’ll deliver my closing.”

2. Issue a Disclaimer.A DISCLAIMER, early in your Presentation will Help Your Audience GET IT!

If you deliver information an attendee doesn’t agree with they may start to view you with a bit of disbelief. If this occurs several times, they might tune you, and your message, out completely.

Example:
I’m going to talk about my way to develop and deliver a great Elevator Speech. It works really well for me and many who follow my advice.

However, there are some who teach it differently and their format works well, also.

My advice is to “Be a Sponge!” Absorb everything, squeeze out what you don’t need, and do it your own way.

The reason to do that is threefold.

Number OneIt gets their attention.
They weren’t expecting that.
Some speakers want to be seen as the ultimate authority on their topic.

Number Two
It gives me more credibility

By saying, “My way is not the only way” I’m acknowledging I’m like most in the audience because I don’t know everything and accept the views of others.

Number ThreeIt opens up their mind to taking in everything and actually squeezing out what they don’t agree with.

3. Tell them you’ll be asking for “Lessons Learned.”Asking early for “Lessons Learned” will help Your Audience GET IT!

Getting attendees to share something they thought has value is an important part of many presentations.

The research shows:Audiences have very short attention spans. It is unusual for someone to give the speaker their undivided attention for the entire presentation. Information considered new and important by some can easily be missed by other attendees.

Example:
Before I close my talk, I’m going to ask for “Lessons Learned.”
So if your hear something of value, please write it down and be prepared to share it with others when I ask.

Do these things three things in your Openings and I guarantee they will be absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT!

http://nosweatpublicspeaking.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Use-STORIES-in-you-presentations.mp3###### The formula for the Body of a Presentation is:Make a Point – Tell a STORY!(Preferably, a personal one.)

Here are some reasons WHY to use Stories in your presentations:

Stories are relatable:
When we hear a story, it activates the parts of our brain that process language and the parts that process experiences. This dual processing makes stories more memorable and easier to understand because we are able to connect the story to our own experiences and emotions. By using stories in presentations, you can tap into this natural human tendency to connect with and relate to the information being presented.

Stories are memorable:
Our brains are wired to remember stories. In fact, studies have shown that we are 22 times more likely to remember a story than a series of facts or statistics. This is because stories activate different parts of our brain, including the areas responsible for memory and emotion. By using stories in presentations, you can create a mental picture in the minds of your audience that they are more likely to remember long after the presentation is over.

Stories add depth:
Stories can help to add depth and meaning to the message being presented. By providing context and illustrating the impact of the message in a way that statistics and data cannot, stories can help to make the message more meaningful and relatable. Stories can also help to make complex or abstract ideas more understandable by breaking them down into relatable, real-world examples.

Stories create emotion:
Emotion is a powerful tool for persuasion. When we feel an emotional connection to something, we are more likely to remember it and take action based on it. Stories have the ability to create emotion in the audience by tapping into their own experiences and emotions. By using stories that evoke emotion, you can create a more powerful connection with the audience and make the message more persuasive.

Personal Stores are preferred.
NO ONE, unless you’ve given permission, can tell your story but YOU!
YOU have many stories of overcoming adversity, doing something that went against the majority, failing and lessons learned from those experiences. Those are the stories that will connect emotionally with your audience.
Use them!

Overall, using stories in presentations is an effective way to engage the audience, make the message more memorable and meaningful, and create an emotional connection that can lead to action. By incorporating stories into your presentations, you can help to ensure that your message is not only heard, but remembered and acted upon.

Use personal stories in your presentations and I guarantee they will be absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT!———————————————————————————————————————————————————-

http://nosweatpublicspeaking.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/The-WORST-Ways-to-Open-Your-Presentation.mp3A presentation is a crucial tool for any speaker to convey their message effectively to the audience. It is a platform to showcase your ideas, passion, or products to a group of people.

However, the way you start your presentation can make or break the entire event.

A Poor Opening can lead to a loss of interest and quickly lose an audience.

Here are some of the WORST ways to open a presentation:
  1. Being Late:
Starting a presentation late is one of the most unprofessional things a speaker can do. It shows a lack of respect for the audience’s time and creates a negative impression. The audience will disengage themselves from your presentation as they may have already lost faith in your ability to manage time effectively.
  2. Starting with a Joke or Story that has nothing to do with the topic of the speech.
It might be a great story or joke, but if it isn’t relevant to your topic it throws the audience a curve ball from the get-go.
  3. Reading from Notes:
Your audience will quickly become annoyed and lose interest if you just read from a set of notes without any emotion or engagement. This can lead to a lack of energy in the room and an overall lack of attention from them.
  4. Overusing Jargons:
Using too many technical terms or jargons in the beginning of the presentation can confuse and overwhelm the audience. People are not impressed with words and phrases they don’t know. They feel stupid and may lose interest in the presentation if they are unable to follow the content.
  5. Starting with a Sales Pitch:
The audience may feel put off if you start with a sales pitch. This is especially true if the presentation was marketed as informative or educational. An audience wants to be informed and engaged, not sold to.
  6. Starting with an Overly Complex or Boring Introduction:
The audience will quickly become disinterested if the opening of the presentation is overly complex or boring. The opening should be simple, concise, and engaging, providing the audience with a clear understanding of what your talk will be about.

In conclusion, a poor opening can lead to a disastrous presentation. It is essential to start a presentation with a clear and concise introduction that engages the audience. By avoiding the worst ways to open a presentation, a speaker can set the stage for a successful and memorable event.

Don’t use any of the above in your presentation openings and they will be absolutely, positively –
NO SWEAT!

http://nosweatpublicspeaking.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/ZOOM-to-New-Heights.mp3ZOOM TIPS that Make a Difference –A BIG Difference!TranscriptFred Miller, NO SWEAT Public Speaking.

This video’s about ZOOM. What an amazing application!

We can meet with anyone virtually. For a presenter, our audiences can be all over the world. But it does present some challenges, doesn’t it?

Let me tell you my story.

When Covid broke out, I was in another country and the world I came back to is not the world I left.

I didn’t do anything for a few days. Then I got on Zoom meetings. Oh my gosh!

I’ve looked up more noses than an ear, nose, and throat doctor. I’ve seen things in people’s backgrounds, inappropriate doesn’t begin to tell a story. I’ve seen people eating, drinking, playing games, not even on the meeting.

You’ve been to those meetings, right? You recognize some of those people!

And then the leader of the meeting would get on and say, “Can you see my screen? What are you looking at?”

Well, I want to give you three things to do for yourself if you’re attending a Zoom Meeting.

Number One:
You look good, right? Well, have a good light on you so the others can see you. A nice ring light.

Number Two:Good microphone. People will watch bad video – they won’t listen to bad audio.

And Number Three:The camera on your computer may be old. Get a nice webcam.

Here’s what I’m doing now, you may want to do the same. I’m using my phone as my webcam, and there’s an app called Camo, which allows you to do amazing things. You probably already have a great camera on your phone, use it.

Before you start any meeting:
  • Update your ZOOM. They’re always doing updates.
  • Turn off VPNs and anything else that might interfere with the system, that could allow you to crash.
  • The speakers on your computer, or if you have an external one, could provide feedback through your microphone.
    • Maybe get a headset. Maybe get some EarPods that have a microphone built into them.
  • Adjust the camera so it’s not looking up your nose or at the ring lights.
    Look straight at that camera.
Check all these things out before the meeting starts.
  • Test your audio
  • Test your video.
  • If you’re the presenter, after people have introduced themselves, have them mute their audio and blank their video.
    • Those are all distractions.
We cannot multitask!Because I’m looking at Joe or I’m looking at Mary, and I don’t know who that is over there, I’m not paying attention to you, the speaker. Have them do that.
If you want a better presentation, get a Green Screen.
  • Have good lighting on it.
  • If you’re going to have a artificial background, don’t have it clear like this. Have it blurred.
    • If you watch professional broadcasts, the presenter is always crystal clear. The background is blurred so it doesn’t distract.
    • Don’t wear a yellow shirt like this guy did in a video. You’ll look like the invisible man.
  • Get this application.
It is incredible! mmhm Studio. I want to demonstrate to you how cool this software is:
    • Look where I am.
      • “Joey, practice, practice, practice! I’ll be right back.”
        I don’t know.
    • Now, this is a great background. I speak about public speaking and I’ve got it blurred. It’s a microphone, but it’s very subtle.
    • Now, oh! This is embarrassing.
      • This is my garage. I’m sorry. I should have cleaned it up.
    • Now I really like this one.
      • Black and white. I’ve got black shirt on, but I’m in color. Good contrast.
    • And what’s nice about this is that when giving presentations, especially over Zoom. We’ve got the attention span of a gnat, so anything that can break it up to get people’s attention back helps. Something like this does.
    • This is a little dark.
    • Now if I’m talking about elevator speeches, this is perfect.
      • NO SWEAT Elevator Speech!
    • Whoa now,!
      • Some people have a background like this. Totally distracting! Get dizzy looking at it, right?
    • Well, there’s another messy garage. I’m sorry.
    • I could be talking about the goals in your life.
      • A background can enhance your presentation.
    • Here we are back at the White House.
    • Oh, look, they put me on one of those old television sets.
    • Whoa, there’s a storm coming. I love something like this.
    • And here I am up in heaven.
      • I’m sorry, I don’t see any of your names here.
    • Whoa! Looks like I’m amongst friends.
    • And here’s just a really nice plain background.
      • Got a little highlight to myself.
    • This is the one I use a lot of times, you don’t want a background to be distracting. This is perfect!

Those are some really cool things that we can do with the background with the right software.

There are also things I can do with the presenter.

For instance, if I had a slide up here over my shoulder and I was in the way, I could get out of the way by going into the corner, coming back or, just disappearing and come back this way.

Here are a few other things I could do.
    • I could go in the Witness Protection Program. - That always gets people’s attention.
    • I could be really, really weird.
      • That would get the audience’s attention off whatever they were thinking about, wouldn’t it? Whoa!
    • And say, I want to get off a call. I can do this.
      • “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’ve got some interference with my connection.”
      • I’ll say, “Whoa!”
        • I even went to a different room.
        • And another one.
        • Oh, this thing is messing me all up. Sorry, everyone. See you tomorrow’.
    • ‘It’s raining. I’ve got to go inside. See y’all later’.
    • I really like this one!
      • I’m in an old film.
    • I’ve started presentations with this.
      • It draws in the audience.
    • Now, I know you’re jealous and you want to get software like this, too.
      • I have no connection with this company at all. I just love what they have.

So I’ve shown you a few ways to enhance your presentation with the right software.

    • You want to have a good camera, good lighting, and a green screen.

Do those things and your presentations will be absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT!

Okay, consider this.

Consider doing some pre-recording so you can show a video because you’re not going to show your first video. You’re going to take it over and over and over again. That can be part of your presentation.

That can work really, really well. A lot of hard work, but then it’s as they say, “In the can.”

All right! I’ve got a Zoom Checklist for everyone. All kinds of things to do before you go on Zoom, and if you’re the presenter. Email me, Fred@NoSweatPublicSpeaking.com. * Put ZOOM CHECKLIST in the Subject Line and I’ll send it to you.*

I’m always looking for presentations, speaking opportunities.

This is my contact information. Till next time, this is Fred Miller, NO SWEAT Public Speaking!

http://nosweatpublicspeaking.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/I-asked-Chat-GPT.mp3THIS is One Smart App!###### * ChatGPT has been in the news recently – a lot!

This app and others are dramatically changing many things.

Here is the unedited summary it did on my book,NO SWEAT Public Speaking!” I think it did a great job!

NO SWEAT Public Speaking!” is a comprehensive guide to public speaking, designed to help readers overcome their fear of public speaking and become confident and effective speakers. The book is written by Fred E. Miller, a public speaking coach with over 30 years of experience.

The book covers all aspects of public speaking, from developing content to delivering a powerful presentation. It includes practical tips on how to organize your thoughts, engage your audience, use visual aids effectively, and handle nervousness. The book also provides advice on how to handle difficult audience members and how to handle unexpected situations during a presentation.

One of the key messages of the book is that effective public speaking is not just about talent, but also about preparation and practice. Miller emphasizes that anyone can become a great speaker with the right mindset and approach.

The book is filled with real-life examples, personal stories, and quotes from famous speakers, making it an engaging and entertaining read. It also includes exercises and checklists to help readers apply the concepts to their own speaking engagements.

Overall, “NO SWEAT Public Speaking!” is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to improve their public speaking skills, whether they are a beginner or an experienced speaker looking to take their skills to the next level.

My Thoughts on ChatGPT and other AI apps like this.###### We have three choices.

  1. Ignore them.
    • Good Luck with that!
      • It’s not going away and that attitude will get you nowhere.
  2. Fight them.
    • Really?
      • The odds of you winning are slim, very slim.
  3. Embrace this amazing technology and use it for the many benefits it offers.
    • Your time can be allocated to other interests and make you more productive!
Number 3 is my choice and this post is an example.

Thank you, Lois Creamer, Book more business,
for influencing me to ask ChatGPT for this book summary.

  • ChatGPT is a natural language processing tool driven by AI technology that allows a person to have human-like conversations and much more with a chatbot. The language model can answer questions, and assist with tasks such as composing emails, essays, and code.

SPEAKING!###### We perceive really good speakers as EXPERTS!We like to work with EXPERTS.EXPERTS command more money for their products and services.

Stand out from your peers by being an EXCELLENT presenter. Most people have a fear of public speaking and are poor presenters. This often puts a cap on their business, career, and leadership opportunities.

Many of the coaching calls I receive go something like this:

“I’m sick and tired of people who don’t work as hard as I do and don’t contribute as much to the company getting recognition, bonuses, and sometimes promotions. They’re receiving these benefits because they are speaking. However, most are not very good at it. But, they’re doing it and I’m not. Can you help me?”

Good News!:

It’s a skill you can learn!
No one is born a Public Speaker.
You also weren’t born with the skills to drive a bicycle, use a computer, or bake a cake. You learned them!
Presentation Skills can be acquired by studying, practicing, and being trained by EXPERTS.
Just like a recipe for a great cake: speeches have components, parts, and elements that when combined in the correct amounts and the right time produce an exceptional product.

BONUS for being a great speaker:

Even if you never speak in front of a group, the ability to do so will improve your one-on-one communication. Everyone does that!

Put in the time and effort to become an accomplished presenterand rewards will be Exceptional!

http://nosweatpublicspeaking.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Benefits-of-NOT-Overcoming-the-Fear-of-Public-Speaking.mp3Are you tired of feeling nervous before giving a presentation? Are you worn out from spending hours preparing and practicing only to feel like your performance falls short? Well, have no fear!

Contrary to what you might think, there are many benefits to not overcoming your fear of public speaking.Let’s look at some.

First and foremost:
You’ll never have to actually give a presentation.

That means you’ll never have to experience the terror of standing in front of a room full of people, trying to make sure your voice doesn’t shake and that you don’t pass out from nerves.

Additionally,
Not overcoming your fear of public speaking means you’ll never have to put in the substantial time and effort to prepare a great presentation.

No more researching and creating slides, no more practicing your delivery, and no more worrying about whether or not you’re coming across as confident and competent.

Another perk of not overcoming your fear of public speaking is that:
You’ll never have to deal with the pressure of being the center of attention. Who wants that!

No more feeling like everyone in the room is judging you or that you’re being scrutinized.

You can happily blend into the background and avoid any uncomfortable spotlight.

Finally:
Not overcoming your fear of public speaking means you’ll never have to worry about the possibility of failure.

If you never try, you can’t fail!In conclusion:
If you’re looking for a way to avoid the stress and effort of public speaking, then don’t overcome your fear.

Just sit back, relax, and watch as others take the stage, while you enjoy your newfound freedom from the pressure of presentation-giving.

Those individuals are creating business, career, and leadership opportunities that, like public speaking, have challenges.
You won’t have to deal with those either!

Really think about this “Tongue-in-Cheek” post, Do The Opposite, and make your next presentation absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT!

https://b2547a.p3cdn1.secureserver.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Common-Mistakes.mp3A “Presentation Without Mistakes” is a speaker’s goal. That rarely happens.###### No speaker is perfect and even the most seasoned ones, who regularly stand before audiences, will make mistakes in their presentations.

Being aware of what to avoid helps. Some of the most common ones are:
  • Not preparing enough:
    • Failing to prepare adequately can lead to a lack of structure that makes it hard for the audience to follow.
      • Their verbal and non-verbal communication expressing confusion can lead to a lack of confidence.
  • Talking too quickly:
    • Speaking fast because of nerves, lack of practice, or both, can make it difficult for listeners to follow along and understand what is being said.
  • Not speaking clearly:
    • Mumbling, talking too softly, or using unclear pronunciation can make understanding the message arduous.
  • Using filler words:
    • Words such as “um,” “ah,” and “like” can distract from the message and make the speaker seem unprepared.
(Toastmaster meetings have a designated “Ah” counter to help members rid their talks of these.)
  • Failing to engage the audience:
    • Not making eye contact or including the the entire audience in the presentation can make the attendees lose interest.
  • On the other hand, being too formal:
    • Using overly formal language or delivery can make the speaker seem distant and unapproachable.
      • The audience might feel like they’re back in school and being lectured.
  • Being too casual:
    • Using overly casual language or delivery can make the speaker seem unprofessional or unprepared.
  • Using jargon, buzz words, and techno-speak:
    • Including technical terms or industry-specific language the audience may not understand can be off-putting and confusing.
    • An audience is not impressed hearing words they don’t understand. They feel stupid and will tune out the speaker.
  • Failing to use visual aids effectively:
    • Visual aids can be a useful tool to help illustrate a point, but they can also be a distraction if poorly designed or used excessively.
      • Many slides with bullet points and hard to read spread sheets should definitely be avoided.
  • Reading from a script:
    • Reading directly from a script can be monotonous and can make the speaker seem disconnected from the audience.
  • Relying too much on notes:
    • While it can be helpful to have notes as a reference, relying too heavily on them can make the speaker seem unprepared or unable to engage with the audience without prompts.
  • Failing to practice:
    • Not practicing the presentation beforehand can lead to mistakes, gaps in the content, or a lack of confidence.
      • TED Talk speakers I coach are encouraged to practice “One hour for every minute of presentation.”
  • Neglecting to tailor the message to the audience:
    • Failing to consider the audience’s knowledge level, interests, or needs can result in a presentation that is not engaging or relevant.
  • Not allowing time for questions:
    • Failing to allow time for questions or not adequately addressing questions can make the audience feel like their concerns are not being heard.

Knowing and trying to avoid these common mistakes will help make your presentations absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT!

https://b2547a.p3cdn1.secureserver.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Vocal-Cues.mp3They can help listeners understand the meaning of words and the intentions behind them.Vocal cues are aspects of speech that convey meaning or convey information about a speaker’s attitudes, emotions, or intentions.

These can include things like tone of voice, pronunciation, enunciation, pausing, volume, pitch, and pace of speaking. They can be very important in communication, as they can help listeners understand the meaning of words and the intentions behind them.

A speaker’s tone of voice may convey sarcasm, anger, or excitement, even if the words themselves do not convey this information. Additionally, vocal cues can help speakers convey emotions and attitudes, and can be used to influence or persuade listeners.

Some examples of vocal cues include:
  • Tone of voice:
The tone of voice refers to the overall quality of a speaker’s voice, which can convey emotions, attitudes, and intentions. For example, a speaker may use a flat, monotone voice to convey boredom or disinterest, or may use a high-pitched, excited voice to convey enthusiasm.
  • Pronunciation:
The extent to which we articulate words clearly and distinctly.
    Example: It’s “Pronunciation” not “Pronounciation.”
  • Enunciation:It’s the way we say words and it’s based upon our upbringing and the part of the country we live in.
It might be a Southern accent or maybe a Boston accent.
  • Pausing:
It’s being silent and it’s tough for many speakers.
    I’m the speaker! Shouldn’t I be speaking?
But pausing can be super, super powerful!
  • Volume:
The volume of a speaker’s voice refers to the loudness or softness of their speech. Speakers may use volume to convey emotion or to emphasize certain words or points. For example, a speaker may raise their voice to convey anger or excitement, or may speak more quietly to convey intimacy or confidentiality.
  • Pitch:
The pitch of a speaker’s voice refers to the highness or lowness of their voice. Speakers may use pitch to convey emotion or to emphasize certain words or points. For example, a speaker may raise the pitch of their voice to convey excitement or enthusiasm, or may lower the pitch of their voice to convey seriousness or authority.
  • Pace:
The pace of a speaker’s voice refers to the speed at which they speak. Speakers may use a faster pace to convey excitement or enthusiasm, or may use a slower pace to convey seriousness or contemplation.
Often, because of nerves, many speakers speak too quickly.

Vocal cues plus facial expressions, gestures and changes in posture can combine to make specific points to an audience.

Overall, vocal cues are an important aspect of communication and can help convey meaning, emotions, and intentions in speech.

Know and use Vocal Cues in your presentations and I guarantee they will be absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT!

https://b2547a.p3cdn1.secureserver.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Everyone-is-NOT.mp3###### No matter how good your material and how well you delivered it, there will be some in the audience who will give your talk a failing grade.

IF . . .1. You researched your topic well and know it enough to have “Confidence in your Competence.” 2. You practiced multiple times.
(My Ultimate Practice Tip is HERE.)

IF you’ve done those two things:GET OVER IT because . . . “All you can do is all you can do but all you can do is enough.”
A.L. Williams.

Use This Self-Talk when negative comments come your way:* “I’VE GOT THIS!”***

However, and this is important, listen to and read those negative comments.
We can always improve our presentations. If someone has taken time to comment, their remarks should be reviewed. It’s little things that can make a BIG difference, and this is an opportunity to improve.

Actually, those, “Love your talk!” comments feel good, but don’t offer the perspective negative ones do.
“The road to perfection never ends.”

In Toastmasters, many consider the most important part of a meeting to be the evaluations of the speakers. If an evaluator fails to give any suggestions for improvement it is called a “white wash.’”
This offers no help to the speaker who knows they can always do better and are looking for suggestions.

Know the “Iceberg Effect” is always there.Just like the largest part of an iceberg is below the surface and can’t be seen, the majority of your audience never comments on whether they enjoyed or didn’t like your presentation.

If you’ve done the work and individuals thank you for your talk, I guarantee there are many more who leave the venue saying nothing.

By the same token, if several diss your presentation, others feel the same way and, perhaps they were being polite, and didn’t say anything.

IF you’ve haven’t* done those two things:Own It!*###### Then promise yourself before your next presentation you will:

  1. Know your topic well.
  2. Review the negative comments and adjust your presentation where appropriate.
  3. Practice – Practice – Practice

Prepare – Prepare – Prepare and I guarantee your next presentation will be absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT!

https://b2547a.p3cdn1.secureserver.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Stand-Out-From-Others-By-SPEAKING.mp3Because Many Won’t!###### Picture this: You’re at a meeting, seminar, or event and the leader asks,“Does anyone have something to say?”

Yes, you do have something important to communicate.
You practiced in your mind’s eye, out loud, and maybe even recorded yourself.

You start to raise your hand, but . . . You don’t.

That has happened to me, more than once, and I’ll bet you’ve had similar experiences.

More often than not, it’s the “Fear of Public Speaking!” that’s held you back from delivering your message.
That’s a problem for many. However, it can be overcome by:

  1. Knowing your topic well.
    • Having that knowledge will give you “Confidence in your Competence” and dramatically help your delivery.
  2. Knowing the structure of a great talk.
    • Just like the recipe for a delicious dessert: specific things are done at specific times.
  3. Practice – Practice – Practice
    • Practicing is not optional!

Here’s My Personal Story
My wife and I recently completed a group tour of Ireland. Our tour director was incredible. I decided when the time was correct, I wanted to recognize his many skills in front of everyone.

There was a dinner the last night of the tour. After the director made a few remarks and said, “The servers will go around the tables and get your orders, “I knew the time was NOW!

As I “dinged” the guests to attention with a spoon striking a glass, I rose to my feet and proclaimed,
“Before we get started, I want to propose a toast to our tour director, Sean Collins!” The audience immediately applauded.

I continued,
“Sean, this is the fifth tour my wife, Beverly, and I have been on with your company. We’ve also traveled with several other firms. Without a doubt, YOU, are the best tour director we have ever had.

Your knowledge, presentation of that knowledge, personal generosity, great sense of humor, and captivating singing made a good tour – SPECTACULAR!”

The ensuing applause from my fellow travelers and ear-to-ear smile on Sean’s face affirmed I had hit a home run with my toast. Priceless!

What do you want to SPEAK about?

Fred Miller, NO SWEAT Public Speaking!

I’ll bet this video’s getting your attention, isn’t it?

Black and white, old movie. That’s why I did it!

Too many times, especially when we’re on zoom we lose the attention of the audience.

We have the attention span of a gnat anyway, so it’s little things like this that will get the

audience’s attention.

Let’s talk about a few more.

Well, you can see who I left to make this video.

I’ll be right back, Joey.

Practice – Practice – Practice!

Getting pretty good.

Uses a teleprompter, but that’s okay.

Now, a background like this got your attention, didn’t it?

It looks like I’m in Washington, like I’m in front of the White House.

Here’s more.

You can see where I am now.

Wow! I’m sorry.

I don’t see your name up here.

But you’re young.

You’ve got plenty of time.

You can still make it up here.

Whoa!

Pretty hot here!

I don’t know why I’m here.

I don’t know why I’m here.

I’m, I’m in the wrong place.

I’m leaving now very quickly!

Whoa!

I’m sure glad to get out of that heat.

That was rough.

This is a cool background.

But maybe it’s too cool.

It’s moving.

You’re distracted.

We should be concentrating on the messenger, the person speaking.

Everything else is a distraction.

And we cannot multitask!

I’ve got a lot more to say about backgrounds and all other elements of communication and presentations online and in person.

Check my site: NoSweatPublic Speaking.com and email me: Fred@NoSweatPublicSpeaking.com with your comments.

Improve Your Presentations!

https://secureservercdn.net/45.40.150.47/b25.47a.myftpupload.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Critiauing-Other-Speakers.mp3 Recently, I attended an event hosted by the St. Louis Speaker Series. Since 1998, the speakers have been some of the world’s most celebrated and influential personalities of our time, a virtual Who’s Who of National and global figures – heads of state, political leaders, newsmakers, innovators and cultural icons, each sharing their unique experiences and perspectives. If there is a similar venue where you live, I strongly advise attending it.

Since I speak, coach, and write about networking, public speaking and presentation skills, I go to these events not only to learn from experts, but also to critically observe and listen to their presentations.

The speaker that night was John Bolton, the former National Security Advisor to President Trump and United States Ambassador to the United Nations. He is known for favoring a strong U.S. foreign and defense policy and his presentation centered on that topic.

A Presentation has Two Components: Content and Delivery. Let’s look at each for this speaker. For all presentations, Delivery surpasses Content, I’ll review his talk in that order.

**Delivery.
  • What I liked:**

  • His talk opened with a statement that grabbed our attention and was timely!(This is an excellent way to open a speech!)

Mr. Bolton opening statement was: “In the news this morning, a Pentagon official said the Islamic State in Afghanistan could be able to attack U.S. in six months.” (That got our attention!) * He customized the talk to his St. Louis audience by saying,

“A powerful international ballistic missile does not have to directly hit the St. Louis Arch to do a lot of damage.”

(Customizing to your audience shows them you did more than present a canned talk.) * Mr. Bolton was easy to understand and used all the elements of verbal communication. including pausing and inflection, to deliver his talk.

(Too many speakers use buzz words, acronyms and techno-speak to, theoretically impress their audience. They do the opposite by making them feel stupid. No one likes that feeling.)

* Opportunity to Improve.
  • He stood behind the lectern for the entire presentation.

    • He would have come across better to the audience had he not used a lectern.

(A lectern forms a physical and emotional barrier between the audience and the speaker.)

Content:

* What I liked:

  • Mr. Bolton’s knowledge of his topic was extensive.
    • He used facts and statistics that reinforced the points of his message.
  • He impressed us with the many countries and leaders, whose names I would struggle to pronounce, he mentioned.
* Opportunity to Improve.
  • Some of his answers during the Q&A session following the presentation left many wondering about his responses, and in tune, his presentation.

    • Specifically, Mr. Bolton seemed to be a climate change denier.

One of his remarks was, “Who wants more cold in the winter?” + For me, denying science, cast a cloud over his entire talk.

Certainly, he is entitled to his opinion and I would not expect him to give answers to questions just to placate attendees. But after expressing that view, I’m inclined to research and get other opinions on US foreign and defense policies and see how they align to Mr. Bolton’s opinions. All speakers should be aware that when delivering remarks others might not agree with, it will likely raise more questions about the their talk. And that’s OK! We should never accept everything we see and hear as gospel fact.

Bottom Line:

Watch, listen, and learn from the presentations of others. Do this, and I guarantee your next presentation will be absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT!

Changing the game for Coaches and Clients. https://secureservercdn.net/45.40.150.47/b25.47a.myftpupload.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/ON-DEMAND__Pre-Recorded_Videos-1.mp3

TRANSCRIPT:Fred Miller, NO SWEAT Public Speaking!

ON-DEMAND, Pre-Recorded Videos are changing the game for Coaches and Clients.

YOU, the client . . . * Can watch and listen to coaching lessons when, where, and on whatever device you choose. * You can Stop – Rewind – Fast Forward – Play it, again. * You can watch and listen at faster or slower speeds. + Research shows we can comprehend quicker than most people speak. - That feature can make learning very time efficient. * You can set the video to read closed captions. + Sometimes the audio isn’t perfect. + You can choose to read the lesson when turning on the sound off.

By far, the BIGGEST BENEFIT is this: The product clients receive is far better than one from a live presentation, whether in person or virtual.

I’ve delivered a lot of presentations. * Occasionally, I’ve left things out of talks. * Other times, I realize I could have presented them better. * Technical glitches occasionally interfere with live presentations.

Pre-recorded videos I put out are my “Best Stuff.” They consist of multiple takes and many edits.

Going forward, I can always add to, delete, and edit the my videos as needed.

My “Best Stuff” can get better and better!

Discussions and Q&A can be facilitated by video, audio, or text through messaging or email.

And, of course, they can also be scheduled in real time.

What applies to one-on-one coaching also applies to group coaching and even delivering presentations to organizations and associations.

Embrace ON-DEMAND, Pre-Recorded Videos for Coaching and I guarantee you’ll learn

a whole lot more in a shorter period of time with – NO SWEAT!

https://secureservercdn.net/45.40.150.47/b25.47a.myftpupload.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/WHAT-Topic.mp3 That question, “WHAT topic should I speak about?” comes up often.

Sometimes, it’s an easy answer:
  • If it’s job-related, the subject matter may have already been chosen by a manager or program director.
    • If that’s the case, have a conversation with them and, together, list bullet points you agree should be covered.
  • Was it solicited by you, the speaker?
    • If so, there were probably several topics the meeting planner could choose from.
      • Hopefully, you’ve sent them “One Sheets.”
        • A “One Sheet” is a PDF you can email with bullet points of information about you and what you speak about.

          • There can be a “Summary One Sheet” or one for each topic. All should contain your contact information.
A link to some of my “One Sheets” is HERE.
                  * **Did the organizer contact you** after visiting your website or seeing you give a presentation?

          • They may have a subject in mind.
          • They might also be unaware of additional presentations you deliver.
          • One Sheets should be available on your website via a Landing Page that captures names and emails for future marketing.

Another possibility, YOU get to pick the topic. What’s Your Passion? Passion for a topic trumps everything! * I’ve seen speakers deliver less than great presentations, but because their passion for the topic was extremely high, the audience loved them and GOT IT! i.e. they understood what the speaker wanted the audience to understand. + A great example of Passion is This Video where a fourteen year old testifies against lessening hours at a library in Toronto, Canada. * Add knowledge and technique and you will own the audience!

To take advantage of every “Speaking Opportunity,”have a Signature Presentation in your hip pocket!

We never know when that opportunity will present itself. It could be a last minute cancellation by a scheduled presenter. It might be more time being allocated for speakers or one choosing to lessen their allotted time. Perhaps, the event planner decides to suddenly schedule some breakout sessions.

Always being prepared to deliver a talk should be one of a speaker’s goals.

To be considered for an unexpected Speaking Opportunity,” let the program director and other decision makers know, in advance, you are ready to present should they need to have another speaker. Tell them your topics and be flexible on time for presenting them. Having slide decks on a flash drive and notes with you and conveying that to those in charge will make you the go-to person should a speaker be needed.

Develop and build a Signature Presentation in Modules.

Those modules can be placed into other presentations, making the next one easier to develop.

Example:

“The Fear of Public Speaking” is a module I use in many presentations, including:

NO SWEAT Public Speaking!” – “NO SWEAT Elevator Speech!” – “We’re All Self-Employed!”

Placing that module into other presentations is relatively easy. Also, because about seventy-five percent of the population has this fear, it’s a topic most will be interested in.

Think about your topics, potential audiences, and modifications you can make in content and length.

Always be ready, and, if needed, that presentation will be absolutely, positively, NO SWEAT!

https://secureservercdn.net/45.40.150.47/b25.47a.myftpupload.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Want-to-Be-Your-BEST.mp3 COACHNG! The 2021 Summer Olympics are scheduled to start in July in Tokyo, Japan. Each individual and every team has been coached by the best trainers in their field. It is a rare athlete who reaches this level of skill on their own.

It’s also true for the top achievers in many professions. There are acting coaches, voice coaches, and personal coaches for a variety of skills. I googled “Coaching,” and found one list of thirty-one types of coaching.

Why do the “Best of the Best” have a Coach?

In 2019, Atul Gawande, a surgeon, gave a TED Talk on this topic.

Here are some of his findings.

  1. There are numerous problems trying to make it on your own.
    • You don’t recognize the issues that are standing in your way, or, if you do you don’t necessarily know how to fix them.
    • And the result is that somewhere along the way, you stop improving.
  2. Great coaches are your external eyes and ears, providing a more accurate picture of your reality.
    • They’re recognizing the fundamentals.
    • They’re breaking your actions down and helping you build them up, again.

Coaches are on to something profoundly important. It’s not just how good you are now. It’s how good you’re going to be that really matters.

Watch and listen to the highlights of this talk here.

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=715679342230048

Coaching, of course, also applies to improving Public Speaking and Presentation Skills.

The greatest investment you can ever make is in yourself.

My mantra is: Speaking Opportunities are Business, Career, and Leadership Opportunities!”

The research shows people who take and make those “Speaking Opportunities,” grow their businesses, advance their Careers, and increase their Leadership Opportunities.

**Hiring a professional presentation coach can help in many ways.

Here are some:**

  1. The Content of your presentations.
    • They can help:
      • Develop great content that includes important points that support your premise, and work with you on stories that reinforce those points.
      • Create a presentation that follows a specific structure that ensures your audience GETS IT!
      • Edit your content. Editing your own work is akin to a doctor operating on himself – dangerous!
      • Advise on visuals, sound effects, and other presentation enhancements. Everyone has blind spots even if we’re watching ourselves in a mirror or viewing a video of our presentation.
  2. The Delivery of your presentations.
    • Delivery trumps Content. We’re all too close to ourselves. Your coach will see what you don’t see, good things and those needing improvement.
  3. The Fear of Public Speaking.
    • Many have this fear, and it affects the delivery of their presentations.
      • A coach will show you many proven ways to lessen that anxiety. You don’t want to lose it completely. That nervous energy should be channeled into your presentation. Ever sit through a presentation not delivered with energy? B-o-r-i-n-g!
  4. Continual reinforcement.
    • Improving oneself is a process, not an event.
      • After football coaching, the quarterback doesn’t work out once.
      • After a voice coach gives advice to a singer, they don’t rehearse one time.
    • Having a presentation coach who will continually help you improve is invaluable.
    • Malcolm Gladwell, in his book, “Outliers: The Story of Success,” said,“Practice isn’t the thing you do once you’re good. It’s the thing you do that makes you good.”
      • The ‘Practicing’ he speaks of goes hand-in-glove with continued good, professional coaching.
Hiring a great professional presentation coach is a solid investment because:
  1. They can greatly cut your learning curve.
    • You can get better by attending classes, watching videos, and reading books. However, a coach, especially one who also speaks, is invaluable!
  2. They have “been there and done that.”
    • They’ve made many mistakes and can dramatically lessen ones you might make.
  3. You have their undivided attention, and are not one of many in a classroom, auditorium, or on a webinar.
    • The feedback and advice from them is specifically for you at each coaching session, and not a “one size fits all,” piece of advice.
  4. They’ll “tell it like it is.”
    • Your coach has no agenda. You are paying them to be honest and they will be; in their praise and critique.
    • Friends and family may not be the best at this, especially if it’s not their area of expertise.
  5. They will hold you accountable and use a structure to get your presentation skills to where you want them to be.
    • This is often tough to do on your own.
  6. The coach can be a sounding board for new ideas for topics and delivery.
    • The whole is greater than the sum of its’ parts when it comes to working on these components of a talk.
    • “Let’s talk through this,” is a phrase used often in coaching.
  7. Once they’ve gained your trust, you can talk to them in confidence. This is important.
    • I’ve had many clients tell me about their fears of facing an audience they’ve told no one else.
    • I’ve also had ideas thrown at me they thought others would find nonsensical and could be ridiculed for even suggesting.
A good coach will listen and ask questions so you hear yourself.

Find yourself a great, experienced, presentation coach and I absolutely Guarantee your next presentation will be – NO SWEAT!

https://secureservercdn.net/45.40.150.47/b25.47a.myftpupload.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Openings.mp3 One of These!

“There’s only one chance to make a

first impression!”

That’s a fair statement and definitely applies to the Opening of your presentation. That component of your talk literally ‘sets the stage’ for what’s to follow.

Quickly, the audience is going to be on the edge of their seats, either breathlessly waiting for more, or, if your opening isn’t a great one, waiting for the moment when they can leave their seat and bolt for the exit!

Your Opening serves two purposes:
  1. Grab your audiences’ attention.
  2. Tell them what you’ll be telling them.

This post deals with the first goal: Grabbing their attention!

Here are some Openings to consider for your next presentation.

Paint a Word Picture
  • No physical pictures equal what our minds can “see.”
    • Example:Picture this. You’ve just taken your seat in English Class, and the professor says, “Class, clear your desks and take out a clean sheet of paper.” What are your thoughts?
Ask a Question
  • This gets people focusing and thinking.

    • Example: “Raise your hand if you know anyone who had Covid.”

Bonus: If you raise your hand while asking a question more people will raise their hands. Depending on the subject, this can make a significant difference.

Start with a Joke
  • It must be relevant to your talk.
  • Laughter gets the endorphins going and makes your audience feel good!

    • Example: “I once joined a Toastmaster club and soon realized I didn’t fit in. They were very smart people who probably belonged to Mensa, the largest and oldest high IQ society in the world.

I graduated in the half of the class that made the top half possible!”

Deliver a Famous Quote
  • The quote, and person quoted, should be germane to your presentation.
  • Quotations make connections and stir emotions.

    • Example: “There’s a sucker born every minute.”— P.T. Barnum

The news recently has been about scams where callers said they were with the IRS and needed to check social security numbers.

Today in History
  • The historical event should be factual and applicable to your subject matter.
  • Using a little creativity with this information can segue into your speech opening.

    • Example: On June 22, 1944, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the G.I. Bill, an unprecedented act of legislation designed to compensate returning members of the armed services –known as G.I.s – for their efforts in World War II.

Think about the efforts today to provide free college education and how that G.I. Bill helped thousands achieve that educational goal and not be overburdened with debt.

In This Morning’s New York Times or other media
  • A current event, if appropriate, can be part of your opening.
  • Make an analogy between the headline and something important to your audience.

    • Example: “Biden and Putin Meet for Difficult Dialogue.”

What if you met face-to-face with one of your fiercest competitors? What outcome could benefit both of you?

Start with a Story that builds suspense then . . .

Surprise them with a contrary statement

  • Example: “In preparing for this presentation over a two-week period of time, I personally took over 200 pictures, picked the 15 best ones, cropped and edited them to get the exact content I needed to make my points today, loaded them into a power point presentation – and my hard drive promptly crashed!”
Use a Physical Prop or a Visual or Audio Effect
  • This will get their attention!
  • Your Opening Statement should tie directly to what your audience just experienced.

    • Example: “The beep – beep – beep sound of a heart monitor.

I knew I had put myself under a lot of pressure. Waking up in a hospital bed and hearing that sound confirmed how bad the work strain had been.

Start with a statistic
  • Stats make us think.

    • Example: “An average user spent 2 hours and 24 minutes per day on social media in 2020.

How much time do you spend on social media and is it well spent?

Bonus Tips * Don’t start talking as soon as you’re introduced.

P-a-u-s-e – and count silently to 5.

The silence signals the audience to give you their attention. * Smile before speaking.

Unless your presentation is a somber one, smiling indicates you are confident, and ready to present! * Never, even if true, tell the audience you are not prepared for your presentation.

Statements like that are self-destructive. The audience will not expect much from you, and you’ll probably meet their low expectations.

Use some of these Openings in your upcoming presentations and I guarantee they will be absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT!
