Beautiful PlacesMay 21, 2023INTRODUCTIONThink about some of the most beautiful places you have been?Think not just about what you saw, but how it made you feel?KEY POINT: Beautiful places encourage human flourishingFlourishing: for people to experience the fullness of lifeRooted in relationship with Jesus: John 10:10—life to the full!TEXT: Genesis 1:1-3, 2:8-15 The Spirit of God is hovering over the chaos to create something beautiful (Gen. 1:1-2)Description of the state of the earth before God acts upon it:Formless and empty: unexpressed potentialDarkness was over the surface of the deep: Uncertain and unsettlingYET…the Spirit of God is hovering over the waters…ready to move and act…so that his creation may flourish Order helps create the optimal conditions for flourishing (Gen. 1:3)As Genesis 1 unfolds, God acts upon a formless and empty world to form it (days 1-3) and fill it (days 4-6)The Word of God is an ordering element: It assembles, it organizesTemptation of Chapter 3: Make humanity think that God uses his word to withhold good rather than to enable good Beauty helps bring out our best (Gen. 2:8-15)Eden: A walled garden—orchard, beauty, a place of delightIt was the place God placed humanity for their flourishingCreating Beautiful Places Inviting the Spirit to transform our homesHe still hovers over the chaos, ready to bring beauty to our homes Picking a room to ‘order’Starting small—pick a room Doing something rather than nothingSmall disciplines lived out through time make a big difference Working together This is our home! A Reason to HopeApril 9, 2023INTRODUCTIONWHAT MOVES YOU?A Reason to Hope: to believe that there is a better future that is available to each of us and all of usKEY POINT: The resurrection of Jesus gives everyone a reason to hopeTEXT: John 19:1-18 Jesus came to disrupt the darkness (vv. 1-2)Darkness is more than just the absence of light, it is the absence of good: it’s not just a physical reality but a moral and spiritual reality as wellSIN: humanity’s rejection of God’s way, choosing rather their own way; the sense that we know better than God how to experience the good lifeThough his death, Jesus bore the penalty for sin and with his resurrection demonstrated his power over sin and death Jesus is closer to you than you think (vv. 11-14)Sometimes, when we are in midst of daily struggles that we fail to notice what is around us—our struggles become so big that it is hard to see anything elseGod has not given up on us…but he comes and meets us right where we are at Jesus cares more than you realize (v. 15)Often people view God as merely demanding: the God of commandments, but he is also the God of questions—inviting us to wrestle with where we are atThose moments where you wrestle deeply, searching for answers and processing loss invite his presence Jesus wants to transform your life with his life (vv. 16-18)When he spoke her name, everything changed!His life was for her life—a life not limited by earthly scarcity but empowered by heaven’s abundanceWhat do we do? Follow Him: Believe that He is THE one!2. Align with Him: Believe that He knows best!3. Interact with Him: Believe He wants to connect with us!4. Trust Him: Believe He is working for our good5. Experiencing the Promise
Begins with Surrender
Yielding our hearts to him
Repentance: a need for change
Being his witness by being in his way/purpose
Involves purposeful Seeking
Pursuing something truly needed (Luke 11:9-13)
Desire something greater
Requires learning to Stay until
Luke 24:29
Jesus knew that if we were going to serve his purpose, we needed the empowering of the Holy Spirit
