For almost twenty years, Moya Sayer Jones wrote comedy for TV, print and theatre, too much to mention here, but including Ferals, Bananas in Pyjamas and Petals. She’s also the author of four fiction books.
But it was when she wrote her first non fiction book, a collection of stories about families suffering disadvantage, that her career took another turn and Moya founded Only Human Stories.
We talked about growing up as the youngest of four sisters, her early adventures in writing and cycling through Europe, playing at the Edinborough Fringe, and lots about story and the great power it brings to us as businesses, but also as individuals.

As cofounder of Sound Healing Australia, the heart of her work is healing and as the name suggests, she’s super passionate about sound as a healing tool.
We talked about parenting, her life as a hippy baby from 6 months old

I was excited to chat to today's guest. Susi Muddiman. OAM, is the Director of the Tweed Regional Art Gallery and Margaret Olley Centre just outside Murwillumbah.
She’s a local from Lismore and has worked as the director of three regional galleries in NSW over the last 20 years. She has always worked in this sector for which she is overflowing with passion and I suspect it never feels like work for her.
We talked a lot about art, as you would expect, what it means, what it can do for us, how to buy it. We talked about finding love later in life, and what makes you happy in a relationship. Punctuation, for example, and a great voice. Apart from art, she loves shiny things and doesn’t like to get dirty. She’s fab.

Toni Scanlan is a stage and television actress, singer, dancer, teacher and director, probably best known to TV viewers as Senior Sargent Helen Blakemore on police drama Water Rats.
Her acting credits are too long to list but notably she won Best Actress in a Lead Role, twice, in the Sydney Theatre Awards, once for King Tide and once for All My sONS.
Born a Perth girl to a single mum, Toni trained in London before making Sydney, and then the Northern Rivers of NSW, home. We talked about a lot about acting, and it struck me how much the process mirrors real life. We talked about TV vs stage, farting, fluffing your lines and why Greek wives are the funniest.

It's Easter 2023 (and some of you may not remember this is a Christian festival) so it's timely that I introduce you to the the Poster Girl for God. Stay with me. You won’t regret it.
The Rev Rosie Wynter is a bit of a find. She’s been a model, a successful retail business owner, a musician, worked in natural therapies for 10 years, had a catering company, renovated houses and had bed and breakfasts (currently still does) and now is an Anglican priest.
Our lovely conversation, which included tea and biscuits with the vicar (had to be done) covered a range of topics, including Rosie’s personal experience with domestic violence, how the traditional church has to evolve, how to get back up again when you’re knocked down – physically and metaphorically, and why she is not religious.

Today’s episode is a classic if you’re thinking about jumping off a cliff – metaphorically! and changing your career. Anna Mortimer is co-owner and head chef (the only chef actually) at the unassuming and fabulous little French bistro in Brunswick Heads called Honour. But before cheffing she was a communications and management consultant for big corporations such as Deloitte.
Here she shares that journey between different worlds. We chatted about her time in Paris, from working in a Michelin star restaurant to finding love, her foray into butchery, along with her most embarrassing moments and importantly, tips for a good red lip. This episode should come with a warning. We talk A LOT about food.

Janet Swain is all about the music. She’s had such a diverse and eclectic musical career which has seen her live in Tokyo, Singapore and Kuwait before settling back in Mullumbimby here on Bundjalung country 9 years ago.
She is a big hearted singer/songwriter who plays bassoon, piano and ukulele and shares her passion working with community choirs where she’s had wide ranging success.
We talked about her forthcoming show in late February 2023 at the Adelaide Fringe, Delphi Goes Bassooning, how it came about and the great inter generational connection of women in her family. We also chatter about how this daughter of a Methodist minister became a Catholic, you get to hear her sing a few bars and learn why you should not enter lightly into rebirthing.

Mandaley Perkins was born in Darwin in1960 to a father who’d survived being a prisoner of war on the Burma Siam Railway, enduring horrendous conditions over three years in many of the forced labour camps along the route from what is now southern Thailand to Myanmar. She’d known nothing of this until she broke her neck in the last term of university and, in an effort to encourage his daughter to dig deep into her own resilience reserves, her father finally spoke of it for the first time.
She offered fascinating insights into both her parents, as well as her stepfather. These two men formed the narrative of her two books, Tropic Tide and Hanoi, Adieu. the stories are hard to comprehend from the enjoyment of maggotty rice to the bodies fed to crocodiles.
While Mandy is much more comfortable talking about others, her own story is full of challenges, and you'll hear about how a seed of an idea became a successful business as Husk Distillery, despite devastating floods and plague.
Don't be fooled by her unassuming and modest demeanour; Mandaley Perkins is currently CFO and co founder of Husk Distillery in the Tweed Valley, and as tough as they come.
This episode is a cross between a history lesson, a lesson in making rum and gin, but more than anything it’s a lesson on resilience.

Today’s guest is a cracking good chick. Pauline Menczer is an original Aussie Battler. Born in the Bondi of old where money was skint and life was tough, Pauline has battled rheumatoid arthritis from an early age and now also suffers from a rare and terrible auto immune disease pemphigus vulgaris. And yet. Against all odds and in a time where “girls can’t surf” Pauline became World Surfing Champion in 1993, winning nearly every one of her tournaments in the world that year.
She received no prize money but she did get a broken trophy. Along the way she helped blaze a trail for female surfers everywhere.
It’s a pretty uplifting story. And one you shouldn’t miss. Presenting to you the one and only Pauline Menczer.

Mandy Nolan is a much loved part of the furniture here on Bundjalung Country where she’s lived and been an active member of the community for 30 years. She’s a comedian, author, a journalist, an MC, a speaker, a humour therapist, a comedy instructor, a painter, a regular columnist , a podcast host and social commentator. A staunch feminist, she is also mother to five children.
In the last federal election in 2022, she ran as Greens candidate , losing by a sliver of a margin. Her life is like a great curry, full of colour vibrancy, heat and passion, and you'll enjoy her openness about all of it.

Michael Weir is hard to define by career. He’s kinda anything he wants to be. A businessman, a musician, a mentor, a storyteller, a leader of hip hop workshops, a producer, an artist, a writer. Above all he’s a proud Wiradjuri man and everything he does is designed to honour his heritage, share stories and educate people and inspire the next generation of indigenous creatives.
We talked about his youth and his life, fatherhood and how and why he dedicates so much time to young indigenous people. We talked about his clothing brand, Sacred Era. He shared information on Aboriginal kinship and skin names and even got him to give us a few beats from one of his originals, Black Anzac.

Pip Harrison became MD of Tourism Australia in Sep 2019, realising a lifetime dream. And although all leaders have challenges nothing could have prepared Pip for the 2 years ahead.
Pip found her calling in her love of tourism early. From being a tour guide in India, Turkey and Britain she’s held roles with STA Travel, Contiki and Trailfinders in London, had 6 years with Hamilton Island and prior to taking on the MD role she was Executive General Manager International for Tourism Australia.
We talked about the role and the challenges of the last 2 years. We tried to avoid COVID and focused on the future, on helping other women create ambition, her advice to emerging leaders.
We talked about family and the benefits COVID has delivered, and the experiences that shape our lives. Along the way we got a bit side tracked. We laughed a lot, although I’m not sure how she can still laugh after the years she’s had. Actually, that attitude is why she’s doing a great job.
Nothing can take this girl down.

When you're chatting to Lisa Ronson time flies. The Chief Marketing Officer of Coles has a hugely impressive CV of senior marketing positions across a wide range of industries from Westpac to Telstra to Tourism Australia.
She is highly awarded and in the two years she has been at Coles she has helped transform a bricks and mortar retailer into a digital retailer with a steely focus on both customer and sustainability.
We talked about the challenges of leadership, the courage to be yourself, building trust in a brand and in your people, looking after your team, the current divide between states and a whole bunch more.

Today's guest is someone I've wanted to interview for a while, but the time hasn't been right. She hasn't been well the last 18months and not up to it. Now it's August 2021, half of the Australian population are in lockdown. I'm in northern NSW and my elderly parents are across the border in QLD. So I thought it was the perfect opportunity to interview my mum.
Jean Beech was born Jean Lambie in a little place called Kalimpong, near Darjeeling in India, at the foothills of the Himalayas. Her father was a Scottish tea planter, her mother, Indian, was probably a tea picker. When she was 5 years old her father took her to a school run by Scottish missionaries. She never saw her mother again.

Today’s guest is a real find. Lauren Tischendorf recently became the first woman to swim solo around Lord Howe Island in a single 35 km stretch. And if you think that doesn’t sound too hard, think sharks, a treacherous 2.5 metre swell and a lazy 14 hours in the water.
We talked about fear, the mental and physical strength you need for this sort of endurance sport, her love for championing women and the people who inspire her as she continues to inspire us.

It was a sobering yet uplifting chat I had with Rochelle Courtenay, founder of the charity Share the Dignity. Rochelle started this so every woman and girl could have access to sanitary products, no matter what their situation.
You may be shocked to hear, as I was, when this was originally brought to my attention, that not everyone has access to period products.
We talked about the real issues facing so many women in Australia and what Share the Dignity does about it. These issues are way bigger than just period poverty. We talked about the challenges these women face, and Rochelle’s own challenges. Just a warning for those who may be triggered that we discuss family violence so please take that into account if you choose to listen.
We talked about life lessons and her grand plan to bring period poverty to an end. I get the feeling Rochelle will stop at nothing to reach this goal.

I was going to write an intro for my next guest but her website says it all.

Rear Admiral Robert Plath AM was such a pleasure to chat to. He had some great stories to share and much prudent advice to impart to us civilians from his 38 years in the Australian Navy.
We talked about his story to join the navy, the influence of his dad and what it means to be a father himself. He shared many stories of life in the navy, what it was like in the eighties and what it’s like today, debunking the myth that it is as inflexible as some would have us think, as well as stories and reflections on his life in overseas postings, particularly in Indonesia.
Importantly, he spoke of the lessons learned as a leader and how easily that can translate to those of us in enterprise and small business.
He has travelled the world and lived in many places, and filled many roles, one of which was specialising in in mine warfare, clearance diving and explosive ordnance disposal.
Robert Plath began his career as a midshipman In 1983 and has worked his way through the ranks, from Lieutenant through Commander and Captain to Commodore and as Defence Attaché and Head of Defence Staff Jakarta; the first naval officer to serve in this capacity, and finally on to Deputy Fleet Commander before being promoted to Rear Admiral in 2020.
In January, 2021 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.

So here's a topic of relevance to pretty much everyone. Yep, we're talking about sex.
As my guest today says, we beat ourselves up a bit over our sex lives. It's something we get the least education on, and expect the most.
Isiah McKimmie is a couples therapist, sex therapist and sexologist who has been helping women and couples discover intimacy and connection for over a decade. She’s been featured on loads of media from Mens Health to Mama Mia to Huff Post and currently writes a column for news.com.au.
Amongst her qualifications are a Masters in Relational Psychotherapy and a Masters in Science in Medicine. But as you’ll hear, she has also studied tantra in India and has a distinctly spiritual side.
Of course we didn’t just talk about sex. In the first half of our chat we talked about Isiah's childhood, her journey from public servant to sexologist and from India back to Australia, before covering common questions we ask about intimate lives and what we can do about it.

Tim Houlihan is the guy you want to be seated next to at a dinner party. The sort of man you can talk to for a long time about a lot of things. So when I saw him described as a thirsty explorer with a passion for applying knowledge to improving life, well, I had to have him on the show.
