Jesus had a lot of teachings that people found hard to understand, but perhaps the hardest to digest for His disciples was His declaration that He would suffer and die at the hands of the chief priests and scribes. Tradition. It's typically a good thing, right? It could help a family or other group retain their identity or their history. But what happens when tradition supersedes what God actually asks us to do? This tension comes to a boiling point when the Pharisees confront Jesus in Mark 7. In many of the miracles we've seen so far in the Gospel of Mark, Jesus displays His mastery over the created order. He shows His deity in how he transcends the natural law proves Himself the Creator. Although they're harder to come by these days, large crowds aren't our favorite things. For us, crowds mean traffic congestion, longer wait lines, and, at their worst, unruly mobs. But when Jesus looked at a particular crowd in the Gospel accounts, He had a different reaction: He had compassion on them. Jesus's reputation as a healer spread so significantly that He was immediately confronted in His travels with new pleadings for healing. We see this in the case of Jairus and his daughter, in Mark 5. But something happens that interrupts the urgency of the moment: another healing.

We make our return to studying the Gospel of Mark this Sunday with a miracle, which though it appears in two other Gospel accounts, is recorded in particularly profound detail by Mark. It's the story of Jesus cleansing a man possessed by innumerable demons; and it's a story that demonstrates the great power and the great mercies of God.
