Philip Treleaven has consistently created companies, encouraged entrepreneurs, taught entrepreneurship, practised entrepreneurship, in short been one of the key drivers in bringing UCL to be an entrepreneurial place.
Philip Treleaven is a director of 3 companies and serves on the Advisory Board of a Venture Capital company. Philip is director of the Financial Computing Centre and is responsible for the UK PhD Centre for Financial Computing, a joint doctoral training centre involving UCL, LBS, LSE and 15 major financial institutions. Philip also carries out a lot of consultancy work with UCL Consultants.
Previously Philip was Pro-Provost, responsible for UCL’s Internal Relations with Asia, specifically South East and East Asia.
Delwar Hossain UCL alumnus (MSc Architecture, 1991). Managing Director, Adrem Group (a leading International architecture and design careers agency) Gallery Director, dreamspace gallery (an independent gallery that aims to promote cutting edge Architecture, Design and art)
While at UCL as a student, he started and sold off a few restaurants in the UK, and went on to practise as an architect for over 15 years with firms such as Foster and partners. Is more involved with boards and mentoring now with an interest in applied positive psychology behaviour for organisations.
He's mentoring Kidz4Mation. He's given them a lot of his time and has helped them increase their profile, refine their product, and drive their business forward. He has been a perfect example of a supportive mentor with the experience and know-how to take a small company further. The company has been really happy with him and really appreciates all that he's doing for them.
The winner this year (which was for KTPs completing in 2009) is a KTP between the Bartlett (Ian Ridley) and Max Fordham - a company whose business is Building Services Engineering, specialising in low energy building design. The project was to develop in-house expertise in the application of building simulation tools that model the interaction of moisture in the building and building fabric, leading to better service provision for clients, hence increased turnover and profit.
Bright Club tests an innovative model for public engagement through comedy. Every month in a Clerkenwell pub different UCL staff and students perform short sets about aspects of their research, always around a theme (‘Lust’, Heroes’, ‘Metal’), to growing audiences, mainly 20-40 year-olds outside HE. To date there have been 21 Bright Clubs, 70+ performers, and there are now always queues around the block. The £5 ticket price covers all costs of production, professional comperes and musicians; UCL staff and students perform free. Other universities (Manchester, Cardiff) are now experimenting with this as a sustainable form of public engagement
Literary Kitchen wishes to create “a social space for writers to get together and interact”. The space will also cater for beginners and more experienced writers who wish to be professional writers, with classes and support up to publication.
A social enterprise dedicated to providing the best possible care for diabetes patients by offering diabetes education and management programmes.
An online platform which gives film producers, publishers and agents access to the best screenplays, novels and plays from all over the world. Circalit has pioneered a core innovation known as Tracktivity Technology, which reliably finds projects likely to have mass appeal.
TagChats is a new 1 to 1 chatroom service which allows people to share interests and make new friends. It works by using tag matching to pair up 2 strangers with similar interests so that they can talk with each other. It also matches people based on a score which is determined by the votes of their previous chat partners, and is effectively like a “personality rating”. Therefore interesting and friendly people will be matched with similar people and trolls will be matched with other trolls.
Provides a new way of learning: combining multimedia and audio in an innovative and effective way that engages and educates.
Provides a technology based solution that improves the tracking, analysis and security capabilities of government defence and public service providers by enabling administrators to easily identify the number of active mobile phones or devices within the system’s vicinity.
Over the last four years EDF have become a key partner with the UCL Energy Institute. With help from Anna Clark of UCL Business, a strong relationship between EDF Energy in the UK, EDF R&D across Europe, and the UCL Energy Institute has evolved. EDF is chairing the UCL Doctoral Training Centre Advisory Board, is co-funding with EPSRC the People, Energy and Buildings consortium, and is part of two consortia funded by the Energy Technology Institute on distributed energy in the built environment, and on the thermal efficiency of homes. The total project value is approximately £4m.
UCL's partnership with Arius 3D dates back to 2006, with the installation of a state-of-the-art 3D colour laser scanner at UCL and a shared-use agreement. The facility, unique in Europe, maintains its world-leading position through generous hardware and software upgrades from Arius 3D. To date it has generated over £2.5m in research funding proposals and partnerships with many cultural organisations including the British Museum, the Science Museum and English Heritage. In 2009 the agreement was renewed, leading to a new partnership with Irish company IET, to create 3D image libraries and virtual touring exhibitions based on the Petrie Museum collections.
Few have done as much as Dave Chapman to develop enterprise and entrepreneurship at UCL. He spun out his own company then worked in UCL Business supporting other academics to do likewise. He launched the MSc Technology Entrepreneurship, one of the first of its type, and continues to pioneer programmes bringing the likes of Arup, Orange and numerous small businesses into classes. As the interim director of CEMI he sowed the seeds that grew into both the department of Management Science and Innovation and UCL Advances. His students have gone on to form numerous businesses and it is sign of his effect on them that many have come back to help with teaching or engage with student projects.
An inter-university team consisting of members of UCL and the London Business School that has put together a balanced team of technical and business skills to develop a disruptive technology that allows them to screen future potential medicines much more quickly, allowing them to come to market faster.
A concept for a mobile application guiding partygoers to the hottest local events, as reviewed by fellow users of the app
A platform that allows potential medicine students to be mentored and guided directly by a lecturer from their Universities during the complex application process. It is worth mentioning that Rob currently has 37 people signed up for his potential workforce, by far the largest workforce seen in the E-Challenge!
A marketing mobile application that allows users to share marketing promotions using their social networks in order to receive discounts for spreading the message. Tipgain also won Phase One of the competition.
Professor Pepys is the Head of the Division of Medicine at the Royal Free Campus of UCL’s Medical School and the Director for the Centre for Amyloidosis and Acute Phase Protein.
Prof Pepys is the recipient of the UCLB Award for 2011 for his determination and perseverance in pursuing the development of three novel small molecule targets, securing significant translational research grant funding and securing two licence transactions with GSK.
