Read the Bible, and you will see a list of Punishments for all different sins. You will see people being punished for misdeeds. When something bad happens in life, is that a clear indication of sin? If it's not, then what is it for, and how would we respond? And what do we make of all the verses pointing to Punishment?

Ever wonder why the prayer services are so long. Was it always this way? And if it changed, why?

When G-d punished the Jews in the desert for complaining (again), Moses made a copper snake on a pole, and the Jews were saved. This symbol later became the medical symbol worldwide ( the Caduceus). But how did it work? Why the need for a snake on a pole?

When things go wrong in life, what does Judaism say is the best way to deal with it?

Believe it or not, these three questions have a single answer. Enjoy a taste of Jewish mysticism that will be sure to enhance your life.

We explored Judaism’s perspective on true freedom: living the life we were born to live.

We discussed the age-old practice of forcing people into slavery for failing to repay their debts, and the modern-day phenomenon of prisoners being compelled to work. We learned that Jewish law perspective.

Finally, we discussed brought it all home by exploring how the Jewish view of freedom informs the Jewish legal position regarding employees.

Judaism’s vision of our mutual responsibility. We first discussed some case studies regarding our responsibility toward others.  We then explored the issue from a Jewish value, legal & mystical perspective.

We discovered that Jewish law considers it a crime to remain silent when someone’s life is at stake. Even when it comes to saving someone else’s money, we’re required to go the extra mile.

Finally, we covered the spiritual responsibility we have for one another—that none of us can be complete so long as one of us isn’t.

Every society has its system for dealing with a person who has violated the laws of the country. Judaism as well has the concept of Teshuva, returning from one's wrong ways. What are the differences in the underlying principles and how are they reflected in the legal system?

Can I use someone's property without their permission? Can I not let my neighbor's washing machine through my apartment, even though they have no other way to get it into theirs?

While secular law views its purpose as maintaining social order by protecting individual rights, Jewish law sees its purpose as shaping society by guiding individuals to do what is right.

This leads to some surprising laws, and more importantly, studying Jewish civil law will help you live life in a more moral and just way.

What is of greater importance, deed, or faith? Action or meditation? Well, we really need both.

As acts of service to G-d, we learned that mitzvot bridge the divide between finite human beings and the infinite G-d. Mitzvot help us establish a relationship with G-d, and the meditative intent that motivates mitzvah performance is what makes it a meaningful connection.

On top of that, we discovered that performing mitzvot benefits us personally. Our actions and behaviors shape our mindsets and attitudes. This means that each mitzvah we do serves a meditative function to shape our moral and spiritual perspectives and develop positive attitudes.

We learned that an essential axiom of the Jewish value system is, “Know G-d in all you do.” It speaks to the notion that everything we do—not only the overtly spiritual and religious—can express G-dliness. To this end, we explored the three most basic activities of daily living and how we can infuse them with meaning.

Eat. Sleep. Work.

We gave ideas that can infuse meaning into each one of those activities. The most crucial step is to ask yourself before starting any of those activities: Why did G-d create me so that I need to do this? What was the purpose?

In this lesson, we uncovered the Jewish secret to overcoming the scattered and unfocused feelings that we often experience.

We explored the idea that the world is re-created by G-d every moment, with a fresh and unique creative energy. This means that every moment is invested with a unique purpose and is valuable in its own right, not only as a lead-up to some future moment.

At the same time, being fully invested in the present moment doesn’t negate our responsibilities to the past and future. We learned that whatever impact the present can have on the past and future is part of the purpose of the present and is relevant to this current moment.

We then discovered that the very units that we use to divide time actually reflect a change in the Divine flow of creative energy. This led us to reveal a depth behind our need to breathe continuously: it is because we have to continuously take in life from the new creative energy that is animating the world at that moment. Because of this, each breath we take is an opportunity to become aware of the sacred purpose that G-d is investing in every moment.

What does it mean, just as a soul fills a body, so does G-d fill the world? In this class, we learned ideas we can meditate on, changing how we look at the world, ourselves, and the purpose of everything around us and in our lives. This has numerous positive effects on our day-to-day life. But it requires hard work, as we are seeking not just a spiritual experience. We are seeking a mindset change.

Every person is comprised of a body and a soul, each of which has its unique character and drive: the body is driven by material gain and the soul by spirituality. This means that we all possess an innate spiritual drive that we can come to feel and experience. The problem is that our material drive overpowers our soul. We explored two Jewish meditation practices that aim to help us overcome this hurdle.

1 Hitbodedut meditation, which focuses on transcending the material drive. It helps us perceive the spiritual drive of the soul by distancing ourselves from the immediate distractions of materialism.

2 Hitbonenut, which focuses on amplifying the spiritual drive. This practice allows us to develop our spiritual calling through learning about it and contemplating the spiritual ideas.
