This podcast is designed to help people take back control of their mind and body in high-pressure situations. We primarily focus on athletic situations usually spend time talking with athletes and coaches about how to use these tools in an athletic setting. However, we firmly believe that these are tools and skills that you will be able to use for the rest of your life in any situation or setting that causes your mind or body to get off track. Whether that is losing focus to distractions, losing confidence, that little voice in the back of your mind creating doubt, or wondering if you have what it takes, we use tools and strategies backed by cognitive brain research and neuropsychology to help YOU take back control and perform at your best when it matters the most.
Today, I’m joined by Jocelyn Bruch: Indiana individual state champion, Division I golfer at Purdue, national championship competitor, and now a professional who just returned from Q-School.
We dig into the real tools she used in competition — not theory — to calm nerves, trust her preparation, and perform when it counts:
If this helps you, please share it with a teammate, parent, or coach who could use a practical confidence framework.

In this episode of the Coaching Minds Podcast, we continue our Confidence series and dig into three critical building blocks every athlete needs: identity, body language, and self-talk.
You’ll learn why confidence isn’t just earned through practice and reps — it’s also chosen by who you decide to be. Ben shares a powerful example from an NBA player who missed six straight shots but still had the confidence to take — and make — the game-tying shot.
Coaches will discover how to use self-schema theory to shape team culture, why body language impacts performance, focus, and even how opponents view you, and how tools like a Go-To Statement and mental reset phrases can rewire an athlete’s belief system.
Whether you’re a high school athlete, college competitor, coach, or sports parent, this episode provides actionable mental performance strategies that strengthen confidence on and off the field.

Your life moves in the strongest direction of your thoughts – a powerful truth that forms the foundation of this eye-opening conclusion to our Positive Intelligence series. What if all your distress was self-generated? What if you could transform every challenge into an opportunity simply by shifting your perspective?
In this enlightening conversation with mental performance coach Brenna, we explore how to activate your "sage" mindset – that wiser, calmer part of your brain – through practical, science-backed techniques that anyone can implement. Far from passive positivity, the sage perspective requires active mental training and deliberate choice.
We break down the game-changing "three gifts technique" that helps athletes reframe failures as learning opportunities, and dive deep into the five sage powers: empathize, explore, innovate, navigate, and activate. You'll discover why visualizing yourself as a child can instantly shift your self-talk, and how identifying your "true north" values creates an unshakable foundation for decision-making when challenges arise.
The most exciting revelation? You can literally train your brain through simple 10-second "PQ reps" that focus on your five senses. These micro-moments of mindfulness – feeling the breeze on your face during practice, truly tasting your food, or noticing the heartbeat of a loved one during a hug – create new neural pathways that enhance performance and overall wellbeing.
Science confirms that negative self-talk decreases performance in every sport studied, while positive expectation demonstrably improves outcomes. The goal: 100 daily PQ reps to rewire your brain for optimal performance when it matters most. With practical examples and real-world applications, this episode provides a roadmap for taking control of your thoughts – and therefore, your life.
Ready to transform your mental game? Begin with just one PQ rep today. Remember, your performance, happiness, and fulfillment all depend on mastering the inside game.

Ever wondered why that voice in your head keeps sabotaging your performance? In this revealing exploration of Chapters 3 and 4 from "Positive Intelligence," we dive deep into understanding the mental saboteurs that derail even the most talented athletes.
The conversation uncovers how these negative thought patterns—which we all possess—initially formed as protection mechanisms in childhood but now cause more harm than good. Everyone has a primary "judge" saboteur along with accomplice saboteurs like the hyperachiever, pleaser, controller, or stickler. These mental patterns might have helped us survive and even excel (as Brenna shares from her gymnastics career), but they eventually become obstacles to peak performance.
What makes these mental saboteurs particularly dangerous is how they masquerade as helpful. "Without me pushing you, you'll get lazy" or "Without me judging others, you won't protect yourself." These justification lies keep us locked in negative thought patterns that wake us at 3AM with anxiety rather than helping us improve.
The most powerful strategy for breaking free? Simply recognizing and naming these saboteurs. When you can say, "That's my judge talking" rather than identifying with those thoughts as "me," you create separation that allows you to choose a different response. This awareness extends beyond individual performance to team dynamics and family relationships, as understanding different saboteur patterns improves communication and empathy.
Ready to identify your own mental saboteurs and learn how to weaken their grip on your performance? Take the free PQ assessment mentioned in the episode and join us next time as we explore how to strengthen your "sage"—the inner coach that provides constructive guidance without the emotional toll.

What if the biggest obstacle to your performance isn’t physical—but the voice in your head?
In this first episode of our 3-part series on Positive Intelligence, former Division I gymnast Brenna Munson joins us to explore how mastering mental fitness transformed her approach to sports, injuries, and life. Together, we break down key ideas from Chapters 1 and 2 of Positive Intelligence by Shirzad Chamine, introducing the foundational concepts that every athlete, coach, and competitor needs to understand.
You’ll learn:
Brenna shares her powerful story of navigating injury, self-doubt, and the pressure to achieve. “I would’ve been unstoppable,” she reflects, imagining the difference these tools could’ve made earlier in her career. Whether you're an athlete or simply facing your own performance battles, this episode will challenge you to start training the part of you that matters most: your mind.

What does it take to develop a champion—not just on the scoreboard, but in life? Coach Tommy Richardson brings 60+ years of wisdom to this question, revealing a framework that transforms athletes from the inside out.
At 88 years young, Richardson shares the journey that led him from high school football fields to corporate leadership positions at State Farm, and finally to his current work as a mental performance coach. His "three-dimensional approach" to coaching addresses not just physical skills (first dimension), but also mental training (second dimension) and heart development (third dimension). This comprehensive methodology turned losing programs into championship contenders and eventually led to a stadium being named in his honor.
Richardson draws a powerful distinction between success and excellence that challenges conventional thinking about winning. "Success is being number one," he explains, "but excellence is going as far as you can using all that you've got." This philosophy creates athletes who measure themselves against their own potential rather than just the scoreboard.
The conversation explores practical frameworks like the SCORE method (Self-discipline, Concentration, Optimistic mindset, Relaxation/Response, Enjoyment) that helps athletes reach peak performance states. Richardson also shares how implementing "After Action Reviews" following competitions transforms even losses into growth opportunities. "You only lose when you stop learning and growing," he emphasizes.
Whether you're a coach seeking to develop more complete athletes, a parent supporting a young competitor, or someone striving for personal excellence, Richardson's wisdom offers a roadmap to achievement that extends far beyond sports. His message reminds us that while athletic careers eventually end, the mental, emotional, and character foundations built through sport can last a lifetime.

She felt like her mind was wandering too much during her rounds and the distractions were taking away from her game. At some point this will be cleaned up and polished, but sometimes it is helpful to see the behind the scenes of how you can help an athlete when they say, "I don't think my routine is good enough."
If you do not have any sort of pre shot or post shot routine I would encourage you to go back to the bonus season between Seasons 2 & 3 as this episode will assume that you already have a routine in place.
Here is a link to make a copy of the rubric sheet Ben put together to help evaluate whether her routine completed all of the steps necessary to control her mind and body and put her in the best position for success possible if you would like to use it with your own golfers:

Embark on a journey of fortitude with Andy Sweet, the former quarterback and current Marine Corps infantry weapons platoon leader, as we unravel the essence of mental and physical toughness. Andy brings to the table the concept of "callousing the mind"—a powerful practice of facing and overcoming adversity that he has mastered both on the playing field and the battlefield. By delving into the analogy of storing "cookies" in a jar, we reveal a unique method for building resilience and confidence when venturing into the unknown.
The art of mentorship is magnified in our discussion about shaping young leaders within the Marine Corps. We dissect the crucial balance between pushing Marines to their limits and nurturing their potential, debunking the myth that military training is all about breaking people down. Andy and I highlight the transformative power of responsibility and how it can drive performance to new heights. In an amazing story that was featured by both The Big Ten Network and College Gameday (Link: https://youtu.be/WnTQay44OSY), Kamryn fought through the heartache, the adversity, the pain, and the doubts of whether or not it would even be worth it to battle back and not only get cleared to play but also catch a touchdown pass inside Ohio Stadium in front of 100K+ fans. We catch up with Kamryn to discuss everything from injuries and perseverance to leadership and how the Buckeyes will prepare for a second chance at the college football playoff and a look ahead at the Georgia Bulldogs.

Our perception of any given situation is determined by four main factors: the filter through which we see it, how we frame it, how we evaluate it, and how we respond to it. The filter is our individual lens on the world, shaped by our experiences, beliefs, and values. Our frame is how we choose to see the situation, whether we focus on the negative or the positive. Our evaluation is based on our judgment of what is happening, and our response is how we choose to act in the situation. By understanding these four factors, we can begin to control our perception of any given situation. Doing so allows us to see things more clearly and respond more effectively. As a result, we can find greater success and satisfaction in both our personal and professional lives, and also feel more confident moving forward!

Welcome back!! Today Ben and Zeke chat about Ben's book Focus Cycle: a guide to controlling your mind and body in Big Moments. Today's episode takes a look at the science behind controlling your mind and body during high-pressure situations. We all instinctively know that when an athlete begins thinking negatively, acting negatively, and speaking negatively that they start to feel lousy and don't perform at their best. The problem for athletes, coaches, parents, and people in the business world is knowing exactly how to get back on track so that you can avoid choking in pressure situations. There was a time when we thought that high-performing athletes, performers, and business executives just had an "it" factor that helped them perform at their best when it mattered the most. However, modern research in fields like neuropsychology has shown that this "it" factor is not something that some people are just born with, rather it is something that you can learn and improve like any other skill or technique.
This book is designed to help you control your mind and body so that you can perform at a high level. Don't just hope that you will be at your best when the game is on the line, make your plan to be sure of it!

When we heard that school was shutting down for three weeks, the first words I heard out of one adolescent’s mouth were, "oh man this is an extended vacation, I can’t wait!” On the other hand, this afternoon I spoke with a an athlete who’s now looking at the rest of his senior year of baseball (that he was planning on using to help him decide on what college to go to) being completely up in the air & in jeopardy. He’s spent the last 48 hours playing every worst-case scenario over and over in his mind and it is causing him way more anxiety than catching the coronavirus that isn't necessarily a big threat to his age group.
While I have no idea what the future holds, I know that spending the next weeks/months in a constant state of worry or anxiety is not only unhelpful, but also unhealthy. In an attempt to provide a useful tool for those who may need it, we are releasing a bonus podcast & giving free access to Phase 1 of our new online platform (AIQ). While we only have 2 sports ready, the golf version will help any individual sport athletes as the football version will help any team sport athletes. Our interactive program is rooted in cognitive brain research & neuropsychology and will help you process some of the things going on w/ your mind & body and also help you take back control. It is our hope that releasing this "bonus" podcast will provide some immediate relief for anyone who may be struggling to handle the mental toll that this pandemic may cause in any number of areas of your life.

His Ben Davis High School team won a National Championship in 1991 and 7 State titles in 16 years. Coach D is a member of the Indiana Football Hall of Fame and was selected as one of Max Preps greatest 50 all-time high school football coaches. In this episode we talk about:
Coaches - have you ever thought, "I wish my team was a little bit tougher?" Have you taught them how to do that and what that means? Studies show that how we act directly impacts our teammates and opponents. Are players improving teammate confidence, competitiveness, and focus or bringing it down? What about their opponents? This episode looks at tangible ways to improve mental toughness, physical toughness, body language, and character and the reason why it is so important.

Episode 3 is all about confidence. The research is clear that athletes going into competition expecting to be successful will perform at a higher level. Not only does confidence give you a mental edge, but it also gives you a physical edge from a muscular and central nervous system standpoint. Confidence is not something that you either have or do not have, it is something that can be developed through deliberate preparation and directly impacted by how you act, speak, and carry yourself.

Episode 2 is all about helping you perform at your best when it matters the most. During high-pressure situations, athletes have to be in control of their mind and body. Episode 2 is all about managing your focus cycle - what you focus on, how you talk to yourself, your body's physical reaction to stress/pressure, which puts you back in control of your emotions. This cycle will drive your performance and starts with you being aware of what is going on so that you can then be intentional about taking back control.
