This is a review, and summary of some key ideas, of Rutger Bregman's Human Kind. The bold idea this book tries to convert you to is: Humans are actually pretty decent. I sat on the other side of this debate for a long time and have been convinced to change my mind. This outlook on life seems to have made a really positive change. Hopefully, it'll do the same for some others!

The psychology of personality is a complicated topic. This book argues that the idea of the authentic self is a lie. There are far more contributing factors to personality than we're led to believe, and in this episode, I chat about; the 3 factors that determine who you are, how you can make changes to the fundamental 'you', and how we can finally cut ourselves some slack when we change as people.

We live in a very me-centric society. In the West, our philosophical influences have been focused on the 'I' for the last few thousand years and now, with the age of social media, we are paying the price. This is a review/summary of Will Storr's Selfie- a book that explores the concept of the 'self' and how we can navigate life without becoming totally self-obsessed.
This is one of my favorite books of all time and has completely changed the way I look at my 'self'.

In this episode, I review Johann Hari's new book: Stolen Focus. A book that looks at the ways modern life steals our focus and attention. Modern life seems to cater only to speed and efficiency, and this does not bode well for our ability to pay attention to what matters. From that increase in speed and tech that is designed to manipulate us, to cruel optimism and the death of sustained reading Johann Hari takes us on an explorative journey of what's really messing with our ability to focus.

Tessa Dunlop is a presenter, best selling author and she has a doctorate in History. She joins me to chat about her new book ‘Army Girls’, a book that tells the stories of 17 women who served in WW2. Throughout the pandemic, Tessa made friends with and interviewed these women to shine a light on the forgotten involvement of women, who were just girls at the time, in the war.
We answer the questions of; what the conscription of women actually means, whether or not it ‘offensive’ that women couldn’t fire weapons in the war, how many women really contributed to Britain's war efforts, and much more.
I loved chatting with Tessa about a topic I was truly ignorant of before reading her book. You can find all you need for Tessa here: http://tessadunlop.com/

Discussing Ryan Holidays latest book Courage Is Calling. A book that draws on ancient Stoic wisdom and examples across history and around the world, Ryan Holiday shows why courage is so important, and how to cultivate it in our own lives. Courage is not simply physical bravery but also doing the right thing and standing up for what you believe; it's creativity, generosity, and perseverance. And it is the only way to live an extraordinary, fulfilled, and effective life.
I also introduce A Need To Know, a new feature where I tell you something cool, that I think you should know. Cool name, I know.
Thanks for listening, you legends.

'The Go-Giver' by Bob Burg & John David Mann is a business parable about how the secret to success is giving. Paradoxically the more you give in life, the more you get. I cannot tell you how it works but I am living proof of this, the more I've been giving to the world the more I've been getting. This book sums this up very well and is a great way to understand the concept.
Try out some of what is said in this podcast and see how you get on! I'd love to hear any success stories, give me a DM on Instagram or send me an email.

We also discuss; politics, moving away from your hometown, returning to your true self in your 20’s, people’s capacity for change, psychedelics, alcohol, meditation, journalling, a LOT of books and how mad it is that I now apparently have ‘fans’.

Trigger warning and a note from Maeve: We’re going to be talking about Trauma in this podcast, in-particular ‘sexual trauma’ I just want any trauma survivors to make sure that you’re in a really safe environment whilst you’re listening to this and you have some kind of self regulating soothing objects on hand such as a warm drink or a blanket. A gentle reminder that any triggering topic will begin to affect you at 12 words in. The sympathetic branch of the nervous system will engage and you may move into the fight or flight response. The second half is a chat about what it takes to be content with yourself, why we care what people think, how manage judgement of yourself and from others and If its possible to 'not care'.

A review of Rutger Bregman's 'Utopia For Realists'. Almost every key step forward for civilisation - from the end of slavery to machine's playing chess better than people - was once considered a utopian dream. But Rutger Bregman argues that there are better things on the horizon for the world and they're not just a fantasy.

In this Milestone 60th Episode, I talk about Awareness by Anthony De Mello. Probably the most hardcore spiritual book I've ever read. Definitely, a book for those that are questioning what it is they could/should be doing with their lives. Not in a sense of guidance in careers, but pretty much every other aspect of life. Love, attachment, selfishness, spirituality, charity, righteousness and so much more! You'll also find out what I think about everyone in the world.

Paul Mort's 'F*cking Unstoppable' presented itself to me when I really needed it. This book gives actionable steps to becoming unstoppable in life. You may not need a men's mental health/self-help book but you'll certainly know someone who does.
Please share this episode with anyone you feel may need to hear about the book.

I delved into Mark Mansons' Audible exclusive 'Love Is Not Enough'. He's one of my favourite authors and in this book, he follows 5 real people over the course of 6 months and tries to work out their relationship issues. This was informative and engaging and, as always with Manson, honest.
