This gripping spoken ballad tells the true story of a defining moment from David Burnell’s childhood—a moment when fear had a face, a name, and a daily routine. As a young boy, David was relentlessly bullied, cornered, and humiliated. Day after day, he endured it… until one conversation with his father changed everything.

Told in David’s own voice, The Bully and the Boy is more than a tale of playground justice. It’s a raw and honest reflection on what it means to confront fear—not with the absence of it, but in spite of it. With cinematic pacing and vivid emotional detail, the ballad captures the tension of a school bathroom turned battlefield, the crack of a first punch, and the moment a young boy reclaimed his power.

This story is pulled directly from a chapter in David Burnell’s memoir Built by Fire, where he shares life-altering lessons forged through service, struggle, and faith. Now adapted as a spoken ballad for the Echo Valor podcast series, this piece resonates with anyone who’s ever felt small, cornered, or powerless—and reminds us all that courage is not born… it is chosen.

This is a true story.
This is a spark that lit a fire.

In this gripping episode of the Echo Valor Podcast, David Burnell shares a raw and personal chapter from his youth, featured in his book Built by Fire. Set in Lawndale, California, “The Boy Named Red” recounts the haunting experience of growing up as the son of an LAPD officer in a neighborhood where that badge made you a target.

Every morning, David walked past a house where a red-haired gang member—ironically named Red—would threaten to kill his father. Red wasn’t just a bully. He was a storm brewing. A ghost-in-the-making. Years later, that threat became real when Red engaged in a fatal shootout with a Torrance police officer just blocks from David’s home.

This is more than a story about fear—it's about vigilance, violence, and the vow of a young boy who learned that the good guys can never truly clock out. Through fire drills and fists, flags and fear, David forged a mindset that would shape a lifetime of service and readiness.

“The bad kids were always ready… so I made myself ready too.”

This episode blends vivid storytelling, emotional reflection, and a lesson that resonates beyond the streets of Lawndale—into the heart of anyone who has ever stood for something in a world that pushes back.

Based on a true story from the book Built by Fire by David Burnell.

For the FIRST TIME EVER I share the true story of my mission to find an abducted 3 year old Haitian American boy who was abducted from primary at church in Haiti and ransomed for $20,000 USD. PLEASE Share this. I hope you find a message inside this story that gives you hope and lifts you.

Gangs, rescue, medical aid, bodyguards, abduction, evil, heartwarming children, angles and demons.  This is a true story that is about two special operations veterans that went to Haiti after the brutal earthquake in 2010 to protect doctors and nurses in what was then the largest natural disaster in recorded history.  On top of protecting the doctors and nurses, they were asked to find an abducted Haitian three year old American boy who had been ransomed after being taken from a church meeting on a Sunday.  This is the gritty real world story of that mission in a first hand account from David Burnell who was the Chief of Security for the largest volunteer Task Force to go to the beleaguered island and help. www.davidburnell.com

Freedom isn't just an American thing, it is an everyone thing.  Sometimes it feels like we in America feel that we are the inventors of freedom and we lay claim to its inherent natural rights as its founder.  Right now in March of 2022 we are witnessing like few times before an entire nation fight to be free from the oppression of another nation that desires to bind them into captivity. They are rejecting this outright and desire to be free and self governing.

THE COLOR CODE OF MENTAL AWARENESS IS THE KEY TO LIVING IN SAFETY OR TO BE READY FOR A THREAT!

CONDITION WHITE - unawareWhite is the lowest level on the escalator. In Condition White one is unaware, not alert, oblivious. This state can be characterized as "daydreaming" or "preoccupied". People in White tend to walk around with their heads down, as if watching their own feet. They do not notice the impending danger until it literally has them by the throat.

CONDITION YELLOW - aware, alert and relaxedThis is a relaxed state of general alertness, with no specific focal point. You are not looking for anything or anyone in particular; you simply have your head up and your eyes open. You are alert and aware of your surroundings. You are difficult to surprise, therefore, you are difficult to harm. You do not expect to be attacked today. You simply recognize the possibility.

CONDITION ORANGE - potential threat - create a planThis is a heightened state of alertness, with a specific focal point. The entire difference between Yellow and Orange is this specific target for your attention. Your focal point is the person who is doing whatever drew your attention to them. It might be the fact that they are wearing a field jacket in August. It might be that they are standing by a column in the parking garage, instead of going into the building, or getting in a car and leaving. It might be that you have been in five stores at the mall, and saw this same person in every one of them. Their actions have caused you to take note, so you must assess them as a potential threat, just as the fighter pilot assessed the blip earlier.

CONDITION RED - Threat verified - implement planIn Red, you are ready to fight! You may not actually be fighting, but you are MENTALLY PREPARED to fight. In many, or perhaps even most, circumstances where you have gone fully to Red, you will not actually physically do anything at all. The entire process of escalating from Yellow, to Orange, to Red, then de-escalating right back down the scale as the situation is resolved, occurs without any actual physical activity on your part. The key is that you were mentally prepared for a conflict, and thus could physically act if the situation demanded.

CONDITION BLACK - in the fight and fight to get awayThe fight is on. Your outcome will depend upon your preparation. Muscle & mental memory from training is recalled. You will fight how you trained

Change is hard, in fact the brain has a real physiological response to change .  Part of the brain—the amygdala—interprets change as a threat and releases the hormones for fear, fight, or flight. Your body is actually protecting you from change. That is why so many people when presented with a new idea—even a good one, with tons of benefits—will resist it.  This podcast identifies three keys to overcoming this response and illustrates how we can learn to win!

All of us fit in the puzzle of life's great picture, even when we don't feel like it.  In a conversation with a very wise person one day, the comment was made that we are not suppose to be like everyone else. We are unique and just like no puzzle has two pieces that are the same, we are also an important piece of the great picture with our size, shape, colors and designs.

Every once in a while, a ewe will give birth to a lamb and reject it. There are many reasons she may do this. If the lamb is returned to the ewe, the mother may even kick the poor animal away. Once a ewe rejects one of her lambs, she will never change her mind.

These little lambs will hang their heads so low that it looks like something is wrong with its neck. Their spirit is broken.

These lambs are called “bummer lambs.” Unless the shepherd intervenes, that lamb will die, rejected and alone. So, do you know what the shepherd does?

He takes that rejected little one into his home, hand-feeds it and keep it warm by the fire. He will wrap it up with blankets and hold it to his chest so the bummer can hear his heartbeat. Once the lamb is strong enough, the shepherd will place it back in the field with the rest of the flock.

But that sheep never forgets how the shepherd cared for him when his mother rejected him. When the shepherd calls for the flock, guess who runs to him first?

That is right, the bummer sheep. He knows his voice intimately.

It is not that the bummer lamb is loved more, it just knows intimately the one who loves it.

It's not that it is loved more, it just believes it because it has experienced that love one on one.

So many of us are bummer lambs, rejected and broken. But He is the good Shepherd. He cares for our every need and holds us close to His heart so we can hear His heart beat.

We may be broken but we are deeply loved by the Shepherd.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

I give thanks to America the beautiful this day.  I love this Republic with my whole soul and have and will continue to defend her against all enemies foreign and domestic. She was founded as a Republic by intention and divine foresight. A Republic is ruled by law (constitution) where a democracy is ruled by a majority. The powerful difference is in the western analogy of a Lynch mob deciding someone is guilty and taking immediate action upon that person with no law to govern, nor protect the person accused. This is a significant reason that this “Nation Shall Endure” as President Ezra Taft Benson stated in that title of his talk given on December 4, 1973 as the presiding member of the quorum of the twelve apostles. I might add that we must also be a righteous and worthy people to retain this land that is choice above all other lands. It must however be protected and endure in order to fulfill its divine destiny to bring about its important purposes.

When I got my DNA test done it said I was 48% Scottish and the rest was British and Northwestern European. There was no “American” DNA to be found. Even the Native American Indians when they get their DNA done they are labeled from the tribe they descend from. When we come to America like millions have for generations, we become trusted with this sacred Republic for which it stands regardless of our previous rank or nationality. We are ALL Americans under the umbrella and protection of our constitution and bill of rights.

Red, white and blue runs through my veins only because I understand this Republic for what it is and what she stands for. So much blood has been spilled on this and other lands to protect this Republic and other places that also desire the same fairness and life under the rule of law and not a potentially evil majority.

God Bless America and God bless all people who are pointed towards heavens light to embrace freedom, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

In 2012 David went to Myanmar (Ancient Burma) with a former Special Forces soldier and Physicians Assistant (PA) named John with a call sign of BACSI (Thai for Medic). This journey would take them through the forbidden rivers and jungles into the heart of the Karen nation. The Karen have been at war since the end of World War II and have a small army of about 5000. They are fighting an army of over 500,000 and have been exterminated by the government for decades. In World War II on a specific mission the Japanese sent over 1000 soldiers into this jungle and because of the danger... NONE returned.

David and BACSI worked with the General of the Karen Army and he will share his personal experiences about this, the people, and what it was like to work with a legend in the Special Forces community.
