Chandra Orrill is a first-generation college graduate who has earned an M.S. and Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University and a B.A. in Computer Applications in Music from the University of Alabama. She worked as faculty in higher education for 24 years before stepping out to lead Rethink Learning Labs. Her work for most of those years has been driven by her own observation that even as an honors student in K-12, her educational experiences were not particularly engaging or enriching. She is driven by a desire to support students in learning to think critically, to feel capable of success, and to be able to succeed in any field(s) they want. To this end, her research has focused on middle grades mathematics. She is particularly interested in how teachers understand the math they teach and how to support teachers in becoming more expert in their content. More recently, she has expanded these efforts to include more problem-solving approaches and content areas. Specifically, she has worked in computational, cybersecurity, and design thinking in elementary and middle grades. Chandra's goals for Rethink Learning Labs are to transform education through research, to partner with schools and teachers who want to rethink education for the 21st century, and to mentor new researchers into applied research efforts that are driven by data and theory, but that also have a clear impact on teachers, students, and schools.

Only 29% of people employed in STEM careers are women, and less than 5% of those women are Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, and Latina.š™„š™©ā€™š™Ø š™¢š™® š™¢š™žš™Øš™Øš™žš™¤š™£ š™©š™¤ š™˜š™š™–š™£š™œš™š š™©š™š™žš™Ø.Hi, I’m YamilĆ©e šŸ‘‹šŸ½ – a mechanical engineer with a degree from MIT who took a literal leap of faith ten years ago to launch a STEM-focused dance organization.š˜¼š™£ š™¤š™™š™™ š™˜š™¤š™¢š™—š™žš™£š™–š™©š™žš™¤š™£, š™„ š™ š™£š™¤š™¬. But it’s far from your traditional dance program. At STEM From Dance, we get girls of color excited about careers in technology through dance. Through engaging programs, our girls:šŸ’ƒšŸ½ Choreograph dancesšŸ’ƒšŸ½ Conceptualize technology elements to complement their choreographyšŸ’ƒšŸ½ Code and build that technology and incorporate it into their dancesYou’re probably asking yourself how I came up with this idea. As I sat in my first mechanical engineering class, I looked around and saw š™«š™šš™§š™® few women of color. That’s when I dug into the research and learned how underrepresented women and women of color are in STEM-related careers. Following college, I knew I wanted to combine my passion for dance with my desire to change the representation of women of color in STEM careers at a systemic level. I was uniquely positioned to create something new and innovative that could change those stats. That’s when STEM From Dance was born. My idea became a mission, that mission became an organization, and ten years later, we’re expanding nationally. STEM jobs play a significant role in society, and these careers are missing the insight, intellect, and creativity that black and brown women offer. They need to claim their rightful place in society among the computer scientists, engineers, and mathematicians who are innovating and reinventing how we live, work, and play. We’re encouraging girls of color to enter tech careers by building knowledge along with:āœ… Cultureāœ… Confidenceāœ… Communityāœ… CreativityIf you’re intrigued, reach out to learn how you can help us expand STEM From Dance to the national stage. We want to establish meaningful partnerships with investors, schools, and local community organizations to bring this valuable tech-infused dance program to new regions. Brett KopfI live outside Boulder šŸ”Ā Colorado, and am buildingšŸ’°Omella. I previously started šŸ’¬ Remind in San Francisco. šŸ“šĀ Improving education: Omella.com and Remind.com are how I’m trying to do this. I’m generally interested in the intersection of FinTech and education and am obsessed with helping customers. As one friend said, ā€œI go unreasonably deep trying to understand their problems.ā€šŸ“ˆĀ I started Remind.com with my brother David in 2011. It’s used by 30M active users and 80% of U.S. teachers, who send billions of messages. The vision is to allow every student to succeed, but it all started with one: Mrs. Whitefield. We raised $60M from John Doerr, Chamath Palihapitiya, Naval Ravikant, + a few more. Remind is growing, and I’m on the board. 🧾 We started Omella in 2019 after seeing thousands of educators struggling with collecting money. It’s still early days, but we have a small set of customers who love it; we’re growing and are well-funded. More here soon...ā¤ļøĀ  When I’m not building Omella, I’m either with my family or on the basketball court (C- center at best, but I’ll outwork everyone šŸ’ŖšŸ¼). Winston has also worked in the nonprofit space on youth employment, environmental justice and community empowerment. Winston stepped into the startup world with Agogos after seeing his daughter’s school administrators’ struggle to find educators of color and watching the passive hiring practices of school districts. He believed he could create a solution to make hiring easier. Agogos’ goal is to create a hiring platform and community of practice dedicated to the recruitment, development, education and support of educators of color. Matt Barnes Co-Founder and Parent Coach of The Education Game

Matt believes that ā€œnormalā€ is broken in traditionally structured schools and wants to make ā€œweirdā€ the new normal.

Over 25 years, Matt has distributed $500m in philanthropy, led an education reform nonprofit, served on nine educational boards from pre-K to university, and coached thousands of parents on education system navigation.

In 2020, Matt launched ā€œThe Education Game,ā€ a platform that inspires parents to embrace a Future-Ready learning model that shamelessly deemphasizes grades and academic compliance while radically emphasizing learning, problem-solving, and student engagement.

He is the father of three amazing teens who were educated in traditional, hybrid, micro, and self-directed learning models.

COVID has exposed a hidden -- in my view foundational -- problem within education: a lack of self-directed learners. Having served on two college boards, multiple PreK-12 school boards, led an education reform nonprofit and coached thousands of parents over the years, there is no doubt that the system needs a reboot. The "old game" is top-down, standardized, emphasizes grades instead of learning, etc, etc, etc. Our work introduces a "new game" that places learners at the center, replace "teachers" with "facilitators/coaches," and embraces 21st-century tools. Our work focuses exclusively on the parent and learner side and coaches them on building 21st-century learning paths outside of traditional school. Learning has changed forever... it's time for parents and learners to realize this fact. How to connect with Matt Barnes www.linkedin.com/in/matthewcbarnes

This is one of my favorite conversations! I have found another radical, maverick in education! We are about to take over the world, dismantling the layers of education!!!

HI! I'm your unconventional math consultant, Rosalba.

I create a space for busy elementary teachers who WANT to love math and are looking for a place to support them on their learning journey.

Everyone has the same end goal for our students. We want them to be critical thinkers and not parroting clones. So how do we get there? We have to reframe our mindsets in order to reframe our lessons. I believe we have to be active participants in our learning. And not just our learning when it comes to math topics.

To me, we are more than just math teachers. I've always been a renegade teacher/coach. I make noise about math. But I also make noise about diversity and inclusion. One is not isolated from the other. It's all connected.

I often get asked why it's called "Zenned Math". You see it's not really so Zen. Not at first. I encourage teachers to lean into the discomfort. That's where we learn and grow. When we lean into that discomfort, do the work, then we get to a place of Zen. That's the end goal in everything we do. But we have to muddle through the tough stuff to get there.

But no worries, I'll be here every step of the way...helping you reduce math anxiety, make math lessons more engaging, work on effective teaching practices, and most importantly help you put diversity and inclusion at the forefront.

Kevin Celiscais a first-generation Haitian American, who was the first person in his family to go to and graduate from college. Growing up Kevin struggled in education because he grew up in an underprivileged community that provided little help to students falling behind; and like many first-generation Americans, he had little help from his parents with school work. Eventually, Kevin's parents and the principal decided he should be held back. If it was not for his fourth-grade teacher who saw something special in him, Kevin would not be where he is today. She told Kevin's parents that all he needed was a little extra attention after school to get him on track. Kevin's parents said they did not have the finances to pay for a tutor, but his fourth-grade teacher insisted on helping for free. She taught Kevin his learning style, time management, and organization. It was because of that teacher that Kevin went to a Fairleigh Dickinson University almost entirely for free, studied abroad three times all expenses paid to London, Italy, and China, and went on to work at one of the big four accounting firms, EY. Not quite feeling satisfied with his work as an auditor, Kevin decided that he wanted to give back to his community so he got involved with a non-profit called CollegeLingual that was focused on helping first-generation Americans go to and graduate from college. Eventually, Kevin was pitched the idea for Integrate, which immediately resonated with him because Integrate provided an opportunity for all kids to have that same help that Kevin had from his teacher, though software. In December of 2015, Kevin went full time on Integrate with the dream of transforming the education system, by helping students become the best versions of themselves through cutting edge tech.

Evan grew his sales and management skills while working in direct sales and studying business books. Rather than learning new techniques to convince people to make purchases, these experiences taught him the value of offering people something they really needed and then helping them find it.

Evan’s commitment to helping people extends not only to business but also to years spent mentoring youth in his spare time. He is deeply committed to mentoring, and passing on the lessons he’s learned about financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and turning dreams into reality.

When Evan looks to the future, he is energized to keep growing his current ventures and even to create new businesses. He’s particularly excited when he thinks about the opportunities presented by the city of Miami itself. "In Miami,ā€ he says "you can create entirely new sectors that will provide tremendous economic opportunity and job growth.ā€ With his passion for entrepreneurship, it’s certain that Evan has quite a few ideas on how to make that happen.

ā€œEntrepreneurs spend some of their lives doing what most people won’t so can spend most of their lives doing what most people can’t.ā€

Shaun Glazer, Chief Consulting Officer of Inclusive Data Solutions What happens when you mix a data nerd with someone passionate about social justice and reaching diverse communities? Me. I'm Shaun Glaze and I’m the Chief Consulting Officer for Inclusive Data, LLC. With over 10 years of research experience, I have a proven track record of helping people reach their target audience on the government and private-sector levels.

I work with small and mid-size teams for public agencies, non-profits, and private clients. I particularly enjoy multidisciplinary collaborations where people are used to speaking multiple languages or relying on different jargon. Basically, I like to mix it up. There is no one-size-fits-all magic to a stellar collaboration. Technology can help, though. I include tech experts as well as folks who are less familiar in discussions about how to set up databases, project management, and online tools to facilitate effective and accessible communication. Together, we can come up with a solution that works best for each context.

One of the things I love about consulting is how it allows us to try something new-to push ourselves to provide more accessible services and to deepen relationships that improve our quality of life. When I'm working with transportation agencies or health departments on racial equity analyses, we're talking about how to ensure investments are supporting historically marginalized people and communities. We're talking about how to connect people to the places and communities they value.

This is Benita G and I am proud to say I am entering my 23rd year in education! Ā I have never started a school year like this before! Ā We are at times used to flying the plane as we build it. Ā Yet, this year seems we are flying it as we build it and we have no tools and no flight plan to follow. I started Tips and Tools Tuesday and Thursday on my IG Live as a way to connect with other parents, educators, and administrators about educational topics. To offer advice, suggestions, and eliminate roadblocks in education together. Ā From the IG Lives, I created a checklist. Ā

ā€œI Help Students Get Paid to Go to Collegeā€ is not just a slogan but a lifestyle for me. I was blessed to earn enough financial aid and scholarships to be paid to go to school. I could do this while being a non-traditional student, father of 4 sons in High School, and an active member of my church.

Now I am helping other students and parents learn how to choose a career, find the right school, find funding, and how to use tools to be more successful while in school. It is my passion to teach others that student debt is not a necessary evil while attaining a degree. Let me help you with what I did to earn more than one degree with other people’s money!

The road to his college success began in 2013 when he competed in an international business competition. The team he led earned a third-place ranking out of eighteen teams representing twenty-three countries. As a result of that achievement, many years of speaking engagements, mentoring, teaching, and counseling students and parents gave him a platform to develop his work. This led Naphtali to start Spark-ED University" www.spark-eduniversity.org. Ironically, Spark-ED University was created after he was awarded a scholarship in 2018. Naphtali is an alumnus of both Palo Alto and St. Philip's College.

Currently, he works at St. Philip's College as a Specialist in Student Success, helping students in Admissions and Records. The specialist position allows him to learn another aspect of higher education from a back-office environment. Naphtali intends to continue helping students and parents with insights living his mantra, "Bridging the Gap between Education and Career Success." Naphtali believes assisting the next generation with quelling student loan debt, building networks, and developing mastery will impact generations to come.

K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple for our Scholars

Use the same online modules you were already using! Ā We know have to come out of our eggshell cartoon way of thinking and now collaborate, share, engage with other educators to ensure we are giving our scholars the best while they are away from us physically, not in our classrooms. Ā

This virus has shown the outsiders of the education arena what we already knew that the gap in Education Equity is real, it is wide and it is deep. Ā Why now are we giving out laptops? They needed them all year. Ā Why now are we having companies say you can get free wi-fi? Ā They needed that all year also! Ā

Keep the main thing the main thing!

Stay healthy and safe!

Ā Although these women are still amazing to me, to us, they are not attainable on to me on a daily basis, so today I discuss women who possess these qualities who are a part of my daily life. Ā My Mother, out mother Brenda Jean Scott Gordon, is my Lead like Harriett Tubman, although she passed in May 2010; she is still leading me! Each Sunday we will discuss another woman from the shirt and also a real to me woman that fits that category
