Vicky and Jun Bantug of Canton, GA sat down with Jack Baldwin or Reynard Custom Homes (http://reynarddesign.com) to discuss their recent custom home design/build project. Their home has been approved for a building permit and ground has been broken to begin construction. ___________________Jack Baldwin: Welcome to By Design, the Reynard Custom Homes Podcast. Today, we're joined by Jun and Vicky, who are building their dream home in Canton, Georgia. Welcome, Jun and Vicky!Reynard Custom Homes Podcast: Unveiling the Journey of Jun & VickyVicky and Jun Bantug are Reynard Custom Home clients designing and building their dream home in Canton, GAJun & Vicky: Thank you!Jack Baldwin: It's great to have you here. Let's dive right into it. What inspired you to embark on the journey of building your own dream home?Jun & Vicky: Currently, we live in a townhouse, and the motivation for us was the desire for more space. We didn't want to feel trapped anymore and envisioned a place with a yard. The decision to build stemmed from our wish to create a home tailored to our preferences and the excitement of working with an architect.Jack Baldwin: Interesting. What motivated you to start this project, considering the investment and the time it takes?Jun & Vicky: The motivation came from our current living situation and the anticipation of leaving our townhouse in a few years. We saw it as an opportunity to build a house that truly reflects our tastes and preferences. The investment aspect was also appealing, especially considering the potential return on investment from buying and selling land.Jack Baldwin: That's a unique perspective. Please share your background and what led you to this point.Jun & Vicky: It all began when we attended a land auction without a clear plan. We purchased a piece of land, and as we explored the surrounding lots, we met other builders who encouraged us to pursue our dream. This initial step set the stage for our journey, and here we are, three and a half years later, with the land graded and construction underway. The home was designed by Vicky and Jun in collaboration with Reynard's custom home design team. The home was designed by Vicky and Jun in collaboration with Reynard's custom home design team.

I to think we (Reynard Custom Homes) are pretty good at starting with the end in mind.
Taking on a custom home design/build project can be pretty complex, and there is no shortage of opinions, methods, approaches, and "hacks" to get your home built.
While there are many legitimate ways to skin this custom home cat, every single custom home built will need plans, specs, and a budget.
We've found the process that works for us is to:
Partner with a client - What are your goals?
Understand their vision - What does success look like? Define it.
Set parameters - What can we do/not do? What's our budget to work with?
Discover requirements - What is needed to make this happen?
Document - How will it get done? Specifications, building instructions, cost?
Deliver - Get the permit, develop the property, and build the house.
I've noticed our team works efficiently when we keep asking these questions and getting serious about finding answers. Sometimes, the answers are frustrating, but this staged approach allows us to bite off only what we can chew, so neither our clients nor our team are over-leveraged as we find answers.
November 1, 2023, I had the privilege of meeting with three visionary homeowners, each embarking on their own custom home journey.
Linda is in the process of discovering how to transform a historical 1920's residence into her dream home. This journey involves navigating through permitting intricacies, meticulous budgetary planning, and addressing the challenges posed by the existing structure. Linda's story showcases the delicate balance required when modernizing a historic home while preserving its timeless charm.
In Canton, GA, Vicky and her husband have completed the design phase and are entering the initial stages of building their dream home. They partnered with Reynard Custom Homes to bring their vision to life within their budget. Vicky's experience exemplifies the collaboration and seamless execution that defines our approach to turning dreams into reality.
Meanwhile, Susan, in North Georgia, is at the inception of her custom home design process with Reynard Custom Homes. Collaborating closely with renowned architect James Knight, she has developed a unique architectural concept. Susan is now delving into the final details of her construction set, navigating through the intricacies of permitting and construction budgeting. Her journey underscores the importance of meticulous planning and attention to detail from the project's outset.
As I conversed with Linda, Vicky, and Susan, their unique stories highlighted the diverse challenges at different stages of the custom home design process. From preserving historical charm to executing a well-defined vision and navigating the complexities of initial design phases, each homeowner's journey is a testament to the dedication and expertise we bring to the table at Reynard Custom Homes.
At Reynard Custom Homes, we understand that the path to a dream home is not a one-size-fits-all journey. Our commitment to guiding clients through every stage, from concept to completion, ensures that each project is a true reflection of our clients' dreams and aspirations.
In the world of custom home design, every story is unique, and we are honored to be a part of the narrative, turning dreams into architectural masterpieces. If you're considering a custom home project, let Reynard Custom Homes be your partner in crafting the home you've always envisioned.

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a webinar featuring Meg Riley and Jack Baldwin of Reynard Custom Homes. The topic of discussion was the importance of interior design in custom home design and building. As someone who has always been fascinated by interior design, I was eager to hear what these experts had to say on the subject.

Meg Riley, the lead interior designer at Reynard Custom Homes, started the webinar by highlighting the significance of interior design in the overall home design process. She emphasized that interior design is about aesthetics, functionality, and practicality. A well-designed interior can enhance a home's overall livability and comfort, making it more enjoyable for homeowners.

Jack Baldwin, the owner of Reynard Custom Homes, added that interior design is integral to the custom home building process. In fact, interior design should be considered suitable from the start, even before the construction phase begins. This ensures that the creation of the home is cohesive and all elements work together seamlessly.

Throughout the webinar, Meg and Jack shared various tips and tricks for incorporating interior design into custom home builds. One key piece of advice was to consider the specific needs and lifestyles of the homeowners. This could include factors such as the number of bedrooms, the type of flooring, and the home's overall color scheme.

They also discussed the importance of selecting quality materials and finishes. Meg explained that choosing high-quality materials improves the look and feel of a home and increases its resale value. This is particularly important for custom home builds, which are often a significant investment for homeowners.

Another interesting point that Meg and Jack made was the significance of lighting in interior design. They stressed that lighting can make or break a room and can significantly affect the mood and atmosphere of a home. They recommended incorporating various lighting sources, including natural, task, and ambient lighting.

The webinar with Meg Riley and Jack Baldwin of Reynard Custom Homes was incredibly insightful and informative. It was clear that these experts have a deep understanding of the importance of interior design in custom home builds. Their advice and tips will undoubtedly be helpful for anyone embarking on a custom home build or considering redesigning their living space.

Kayln Kight and I recently interviewed architect Dimitrius Lynch for our latest episode of By Design. His firm, based out of California, is House of Lynes.

I reached out to Dimitrius after listening to several of his podcast episodes. He hosts an architectural podcast called "Spaces," and he and his guests have covered topics ranging from multi-generational housing, the "State of Architecture," to streamlining the ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) building process.

What I like the most about Dimitrius' show is how in-depth he goes into the topics he covers around architecture and the built environment. He aims to guide meaningful and thoughtful discussions about how and why we "do architecture" in the world.

Every time we have a guest on our podcast, I look for a moment that captures our guests' "why" or their inspiration. I like hearing the stories about what drives people to do what they do and gives them vision, purpose, and excitement.

Dimitrius shares that he went out on his own as an architect because he has been allowed to connect directly with clients and guide them into a value-driven process rather than a cost-saving commodity experience.

I love that.

The reason we (Reynard Architectural Designs) love working with people to design their homes is very similar.

We love connecting with our clients in such a way that something as personal as their home will be a product of the genuine care and attention it received in the design process. We love knowing that the team our clients entrusted with bringing their home to life didn't design in a cheap way and didn't cut corners but brought value to the architectural design experience.

Dimitrius is the Principal Architect of LYNES, licensed in the state of California and certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Board, creator and host of SPACES Podcast, and Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Gābl Media.
