The Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism (ASEN) is an interdisciplinary student-led research association founded by research students and academics in 1990 at the London School of Economics & Political Science.

ASEN seeks to fulfil two broad objectives:

  1. To facilitate and maintain an interdisciplinary, global network of researchers, academics and other scholars interested in ethnicity and nationalism; and
  2. To stimulate, produce, and diffuse world-class research on ethnicity and nationalism.

In the second episode of the ASEN-CARR’s podcast series, CARR Doctoral Fellow Nicholas James speaks to Dr. Nicky Falkof and Dr. Aaron Winter. Dr. Falkof is an associate professor and cultural studies scholar based at Wits University who writes on race, anxiety, and moral panic in the urban global south. Dr. Winter is a senior lecturer in criminology and criminal justice in the School of Business and Law at the University of East London. He researches right-wing extremism and terrorism, hate groups and hate crimes, and racism, anti-Semitism, and Islamophobia The podcast will be useful for students, practitioners, and researches interested in the intersection of radical right extremism and race.

In ASEN-CARR’s inaugural podcast, CARR Doctoral Fellow Nicholas James speaks to Senior Fellow Dr. Craig McCann, who is an expert on preventing violent extremism. Dr. McCann researches, lectures, and writes on far right extremism, counter terrorism, and preventing and countering violent extremism. In this 45-minute interview, he speaks to Nicholas about recent developments in preventing and countering extremism, the limits and possibilities of the field, and future trajectories for creating and sustaining resilience in empathetic communities. The podcast will be useful for students, practitioners, and researches interested in the intersection of radical right extremism and countering violent extremism/counter terrorism.
